Psalm 94-96

God judges all people

94 Lord, you are the God
    who punishes guilty people.
God, show your power
to punish people as they deserve![a]
Judge of all people on the earth, do something!
Punish proud people as they deserve!
How long will wicked people continue to be happy?
    Yes, Lord, how long?
Those people who do evil things
    speak many proud words.
They boast about how great they are.
Lord, see how they hurt your own people.
They are cruel to the people that belong to you.
They kill widows
and foreign people who live in our land.
They murder children that have no family.
They say, ‘The Lord does not see us.
Israel's God does not see what we are doing.’
Think again, all you fools among the people!
    Stupid people, become wise!
God made our ears!
    Can he himself not hear?
He made our eyes!
    Does he not see?
10 He teaches the nations what is right.
Will he not punish you,
when you do what is wrong?
He teaches people what they should know.
11 The Lord knows what people think.
He knows that their thoughts are empty.
12 Lord, when you teach people what is right,
    you have really blessed them.
You use your Law to teach them.
13 When those people have troubles,
    you keep them safe.
Then the wicked people fall into a deep hole
that you have dug to catch them.
14 The Lord will not leave his people alone.
He will not forget to help the people that belong to him.
15 Once again, judges will do what is right and fair,
and good, honest people will agree.
16 Who would fight for me
    against the wicked people?[b]
Who would keep me safe
from the people who do evil things?
17 Unless the Lord had helped me,
I would soon have become silent in death.
18 When I think, ‘I am falling down,’
your faithful love keeps me safe, Lord.
19 When I have troubles in my mind,
    so that I am afraid,
you help me to be happy again.
20 You will not become a friend of cruel rulers.
They make laws that only hurt people.
21 They join together to work against good people.
They say that people are guilty
    who have done nothing wrong.
They say that they must die.
22 But the Lord is a strong place for me.
Yes, my God is a rock
where I can hide and be safe.
23 He will punish those wicked leaders.
He will destroy them,
    because they do evil things.
The Lord our God will completely destroy them.

Worship God and obey him[c]

95 Come now! Let us sing together to worship the Lord!
We will shout aloud
to praise God, the strong Rock who makes us safe!
Let us come near to God
    and thank him![d]
Let us sing songs to praise him,
    because we are so happy!
Yes, the Lord is the great God.
He is the great king who rules over all gods.
The deepest places of the earth are in his hand.
The highest mountains belong to him.
The seas are his,
    because he made them.
He also made the dry land,
    with his own hands.
Come now! Let us bend down to worship him!
Let us bend our knees in front of the Lord.
He is the one who made us.
He is our God.
He takes care of us,
like a shepherd takes care of his sheep.[e]
As his sheep, he gives us what we need.

Today, you must listen to him
    and obey him.
He says, ‘Do not refuse to obey me,
like my people did at Meribah.
They also did that one day at Massah,
    in the desert.
Your ancestors tested me there,
to see if I would punish them.
But they had already seen the great things
that I had done for them!
10 So I was angry with those people
all the time for 40 years.
I said, “These people love to go the wrong way.
They refuse to follow my ways.”
11 I was very angry and I promised,
“They will never come into my place of rest.” ’[f]

Sing a new song![g]

96 Sing a new song to praise the Lord!
All the world,
    sing to praise the Lord!
Sing to praise the Lord's great name!
Every day, tell people the message
    that he has rescued us.
Tell the other nations that he is very great.
Tell all of them
about the great things that he has done.
Yes, the Lord is great!
Everyone should praise him as he deserves.
People should respect him with fear,
    more than all other gods.
All the other nations' gods are useless idols.
But the Lord made the heavens.
We see that he is a very great king.
His holy home is full of his power and his beauty.
You people of other nations,
recognize that the Lord is great and powerful.
Agree that the Lord's name is great.
Bring a gift to offer to him in his temple.
Worship the Lord,
    who is beautiful and holy.
Everyone on earth must shake with fear in front of him.
10 Tell all the nations,
    ‘The Lord rules as King!’
He has fixed the world in its place,
so that nothing can shake it.
He will judge all the people of the world fairly.
11 The earth and the sky
    should be happy!
The sea and everything in it
    should shout aloud!
12 The fields and all their crops should shout with joy!
Then all the trees in the forests will also sing
    because they are so happy!
13 They will sing to praise the Lord,
for he will come to judge the earth.
He is a fair judge.
He will judge all the people of the world with his truth.

Romans 15:14-33

Paul's reason for writing this letter

14 My Christian friends, I myself am completely sure that you are always good. You know everything about God's message, so that you are able to teach one another what is right. 15 I know that is true, but I still needed to write this letter to you. I have written to you strongly, so that you would remember certain things. Because God is kind, he has chosen me to serve him in this way. 16 I am a servant of Christ Jesus among the Gentiles. I tell people God's good news. I work like a priest so that God will accept the Gentiles. I offer them to God. The Holy Spirit has made them clean and so God accepts them.

17 So I can be proud about my work. I can serve God well because I belong to Christ Jesus. 18 But I will only speak about the work that Christ has made me able to do. I have lived among the Gentiles and I have spoken God's message to them. They have obeyed God as a result of Christ's work through me. 19 God's Holy Spirit used his power to do many miracles. He caused many great and powerful things to happen. As a result, I have told the whole good news about Christ to many people. I have told it while I travelled all the way from Jerusalem to Illyricum.[a]

20 I want to go to places where nobody has ever told people about Christ before. I want to tell the good news to people in those places. That is what I have always wanted to do. I do not want to work in a place where someone else has already started to teach God's message. 21 This is written in the Bible about God's Messiah:

‘Those people that nobody ever told them about him will now see.
Those people who have never heard about him will now understand.’[b]

Paul hopes to visit Rome

22 That is why, many times, I have not had a chance to visit you. 23 For many years I have been waiting for the chance to come. But now I have finished my work in these places here. 24 So I hope to visit you while I am travelling to Spain. I will stay with you in Rome for a short time. I will really enjoy having some time together with you there. Then you can help me to continue my journey.

25 But now, I am ready to go to Jerusalem to help God's people there. 26 Some of them are poor, and the Christians in Macedonia and Achaia wanted to help them. So they got some money to send to those people. 27 The Christians in Macedonia and Achaia were happy to share what they had.[c] But really, they have a duty to help the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem. It is the Jews who shared good things from God to help the Gentiles in their spirits. So now the Gentiles ought to help the Jewish Christians with things that they need for their bodies.

28 So I must take their gift safely to the Christians in Jerusalem. When I have finished that job, I will come to visit you. Then I will continue my journey to Spain. 29 When I visit you, I know that Christ will bless us very much while we are together.

30 My Christian friends, please pray for me as I do this difficult work. Together we belong to our Lord Jesus Christ. God's Spirit has given us love for each other. So I ask you to help me and to pray with me. 31 Pray that God will keep me safe from those people in Judea who have refused to believe in Jesus. Pray also that God's people at Jerusalem will happily accept the gift that I am taking to them.[d]

32 If God agrees, I will then be able to come to you, and we will be happy together. I will enjoy having some rest while I stay there with you. 33 I pray that God will give you peace in your minds. I pray that he will be with all of you and help you. Amen.
