Old/New Testament
10 “At that time Yahweh said to me, ‘Carve for yourself two tablets of stone just as the former ones, and come up the mountain to me, and you shall make for yourself an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which you smashed, and you must put them in the ark.’ 3 And so I made an ark of acacia wood,[a] and I carved two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. 4 And he wrote upon the tablets according to the first writing,[b] the ten words that Yahweh spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly, and Yahweh gave them to me. 5 And I turned, and I came down from the mountain, and I put the tablets in the ark that I had made, and they are there, just as Yahweh commanded me.
6 “And the Israelites[c] journeyed from the wells of Bene-Yaqan to Moserah; there Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar, his son, served as a priest in place of him. 7 From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land flowing with streams of water. 8 At that time Yahweh set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to stand before[d] Yahweh, to serve him and to bless the people in his name until this day. 9 Therefore there was not[e] for Levi an allotment or an inheritance along with his brothers; rather Yahweh is his inheritance just as Yahweh your God promised[f] to him.
10 And I stayed on the mountain just as during the former forty days[g] and forty nights,[h] and Yahweh listened to me also on that occasion;[i] Yahweh was not willing to destroy you. 11 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Come, continue[j] your journey before the people, [k] so that you may go and take possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors[l] to give to them.’
12 And now, Israel, what is Yahweh your God asking[m] from you, except[n] to revere Yahweh your God, to go[o] in all his ways and to love him and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul,[p] 13 to keep the commandments of Yahweh and his statutes that I am commanding you today for your own good.[q] 14 Look! For to Yahweh your God belong[r] heaven and the highest heavens,[s] the earth and all that is in it. 15 Yet[t] to your ancestors[u] Yahweh was very attached, so as to love them, and so he chose their offspring after them, namely you, from all the peoples, as it is today.[v] 16 So you shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn.[w] 17 For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who is not partial,[x] and he does not take bribes. 18 And he executes justice for the orphan and widow, and he is one who loves the alien, to give to them food and clothing. 19 And you shall love the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 20 Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear. 21 He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen. 22 With only seventy persons your ancestors[y] went down to Egypt, but now Yahweh your God has made you as the stars of the heaven with respect to multitude.[z]
11 “And you shall love Yahweh your God, and you shall keep his obligations and his statutes and his regulations and his commandments always.[aa] 2 And you shall realize today[ab] that it is not with your children who have not known and who have not seen the discipline of Yahweh your God—his greatness, his strong hand, and his outstretched arm, 3 and his signs and his deeds that he did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and to all of his land, 4 and what he did to the army of Egypt and to their horses and to their chariots, and how he made the water of the Red Sea[ac] flow over them, when they pursued after them,[ad] and so Yahweh has destroyed them, as is the case today,[ae] 5 and what he did to you in the desert until you came up to this place, 6 and what he did to Dathan and to Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth wide and swallowed them, their households and their tents, and all of the living creatures[af] that were in their possession and that were following along with them[ag] in the midst of all of Israel. 7 The fact of the matter is, your own eyes have seen[ah] all of the great deeds[ai] of Yahweh that he did.
8 “And you must keep all of the commandments[aj] that I am commanding you today,[ak] so that you may have strength and you may go and you may take possession of that land to which you are crossing[al] to take possession of it, 9 so that you may live long[am] on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,[an] to give it to them and to their offspring, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the fact is that the land that you are about to go into[ao] to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come out of,[ap] where you sow your seed and you give water by your foot, as in a vegetable garden.[aq] 11 But the land that you are about to cross into to take possession of it is a land of hills and valleys, and by the rain of the heaven it drinks water, 12 a land that Yahweh your God is caring for it; continually the eyes of Yahweh your God are on it, from the beginning of the year up to the end of the year.
13 “And it will happen that if you listen carefully to my commandments that I am commanding you today,[ar] to love Yahweh your God, and to serve him with all of your heart and with all of your soul,[as] 14 then ‘I will send the rain for your land in its season, early rain and later rain, and you will gather your grain and your wine and your olive oil. 15 And I will give vegetation in your field for your livestock, and you will eat your fill.’[at] 16 Take care[au] so that your heart is not easily deceived, and you turn away, and you serve other gods, and you bow down to them. 17 And then the anger of Yahweh will be kindled against you,[av] and he will shut up the heavens,[aw] and there shall not be rain, and so the ground will not give its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land that Yahweh is giving to you.
18 “And you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your inner self,[ax] and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be as an emblem between your eyes. 19 And you shall teach them to your children[ay] by talking about them when you sit in your house and when you travel on the road and when you lie down and when you get up. 20 And you shall write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates, 21 so that they may multiply your days and the days of your children on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors[az] to give it to them as long as heaven endures over the earth.[ba] 22 Yes, if you diligently keep all[bb] this commandment that I am commanding you to observe it, [bc] by loving Yahweh your God by walking in[bd] all his ways and by holding fast to him, 23 then Yahweh will drive out all of these nations before you,[be] and you will dispossess nations larger and more numerous than you. 24 Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, it shall be yours; your boundary shall be from the desert and Lebanon from the river, the river Euphrates, on up to the western sea.[bf] 25 No one can take a stand against you;[bg] your dread and your fear Yahweh your God will put on the surface[bh] of all the land where you tread,[bi] just as he promised[bj] to you.
26 “See, I am setting before you[bk] today[bl] a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you today,[bm] 28 and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God, but rather you turn from the way that I am commanding you today[bn] to go after other gods that you have not known.
29 “And it will happen that when Yahweh your God has brought you to the land that you are going to,[bo] to take possession of it, then[bp] you shall pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 (Are they not beyond the Jordan, toward the west,[bq] in the land of the Canaanites living in the Jordan Valley,[br] opposite Gilgal beside the terebinth[bs] of Moreh?) 31 For you are now about to cross the Jordan to go to take possession of the land that Yahweh, your God, is giving to you, and you will take possession of it and live in it, 32 and you must diligently observe[bt] all the rules and the regulations that I am setting before you[bu] today.”[bv]
Detailed Stipulations: Purity and Unity
12 “These are the rules and the regulations that you must diligently observe[bw] in the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,[bx] has given to you to take possession of it, during all the days that you are living on the land.
2 You must completely demolish all of the places there where they served their gods, that is, the nations whom you are about to dispossess, on the high mountains, and on the hills and under each leafy green tree.[by] 3 And you shall break down their altars, and you shall smash their stone pillars, and their Asherah poles you must burn with fire, and the images of their gods you shall hew down, and you shall blot out their names from that place. 4 You shall not worship Yahweh your God like this. 5 But only[bz] to the place that Yahweh your God will choose from all of your tribes to place his name there as his dwelling shall you seek, and there you shall go. 6 And you shall bring there your burnt offerings and your sacrifices and your tithes and your donations[ca] and your votive gifts and your freewill offerings and the firstling of your herd and your flock. 7 And you shall eat there before[cb] Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice in all your endeavors,[cc] you and your family in which Yahweh your God has blessed you.
8 “You must not do just as we are doing here today,[cd] each according to all that is right in his eyes.[ce] 9 For you have not come up to now to the resting place and to the inheritance that Yahweh your God is giving to you. 10 But you will cross the Jordan, and you will settle in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give rest to you from all your enemies from all around, and you will live securely, 11 and then[cf] at the place that Yahweh your God will choose, to let his name dwell there, there you shall bring all the things I am commanding you, your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and your donations,[cg] and all of the choice things, your votive gifts that you vow to Yahweh. 12 And you shall rejoice before[ch] Yahweh your God, you and your sons and your daughters and your slaves and your slave women and the Levite who is in your towns,[ci] because there is not for him a plot of ground and an inheritance with you.
13 “Take care for yourself so that you do not offer your burnt offerings at just any place that you happen to see, 14 but only[cj] at the place that Yahweh will choose among one of your tribes; there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all the things that I am commanding you.
15 “But whenever you desire[ck] you may slaughter, and you may eat meat according to the blessing of Yahweh your God that he has given to you in all of your towns;[cl] the unclean and the clean may eat it just as they would the gazelle and as the deer. 16 Only the blood you must not eat, but on the ground you must pour it like water. 17 You are not allowed to eat in your towns[cm] the tithe of your grain and your wine and your olive oil and the firstborn of your herd and your flock and all of your votive gifts that you vowed and your freewill offering and your donations.[cn] 18 But only before[co] Yahweh your God you shall eat it, at the place that Yahweh your God will choose,[cp] you and your son and your daughter and your slave and your slave woman and the Levite who is in your towns,[cq] and you must rejoice before[cr] your God in all your undertakings.[cs] 19 Take care[ct] so that you do not neglect the Levite all of your days on your land.
20 “When Yahweh your God enlarges your territory just as he has promised[cu] to you, and you say ‘I want to eat some meat,’ because you want it,[cv] whenever you desire[cw] you may eat meat. 21 If the place that[cx] Yahweh your God will choose to put his name there is too far from you, and you slaughter any of your herd and any of your flock that Yahweh has given to you just as I have commanded you, then you may eat whenever you desire in your towns.[cy] 22 Surely just as the gazelle and the deer is eaten, so both the unclean and the clean together may eat it. 23 Only, be sure not to eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the meat. 24 You shall not eat it, but on the ground you shall pour it out like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that it will go well[cz] for you and your children after you, because then you will be doing what is[da] right in the eyes of Yahweh. 26 Only your holy objects that are yours[db] and your votive gifts you must carry and you must bring to the place that Yahweh will choose. 27 And you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood on the altar of Yahweh your God, and the blood of your sacrifices you shall pour out on the altar of Yahweh your God, but the meat you may eat. 28 Be careful to obey[dc] all these things that I am commanding you, so that it will go well[dd] for you and for your children after you forever,[de] because then you will be doing what is[df] good and right[dg] in the eyes of Yahweh your God.
29 “When Yahweh your God has cut off the nations whom you are about to go to,[dh] to dispossess them before you,[di] and you have dispossessed them, and you live in their land, 30 take care[dj] so that you are not ensnared into imitating them[dk] after their being destroyed from before you,[dl] and so that you not enquire concerning their gods, saying,[dm] ‘How did these nations serve their gods, and thus I myself[dn] want to do also.’ 31 You must not do so toward Yahweh your God, because of every detestable thing they have done for their gods Yahweh hates, for even their sons and their daughters they would burn in the fire to their gods. 32 [do] All of the things[dp] that I am commanding you, you must diligently observe;[dq] you shall not add to it, and you shall not take away from it.”
The Parable of the Tenant Farmers in the Vineyard
12 And he began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a trough for the winepress, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey. 2 And he sent a slave to the tenant farmers at the proper time, so that he could collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the tenant farmers. 3 And they seized him and[a] beat him[b] and sent him[c] away empty-handed. 4 And again he sent to them another slave, and that one they struck on the head and dishonored. 5 And he sent another, and that one they killed. And he sent[d] many others, some of whom they beat and some of whom they killed. 6 He had one more, a beloved son. Last of all he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ 8 And they seized and[e] killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What[f] will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this scripture:
‘The stone which the builders rejected,
this has become the cornerstone.[g]
11 This came about from the Lord,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”[h]
12 And they were seeking to arrest him, and they were afraid of the crowd, because they knew that he had told the parable with reference to them. And they left him and[i] went away.
Paying Taxes to Caesar
13 And they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him so that they could catch him unawares in a statement. 14 And when they[j] came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and you do not care what anyone thinks,[k] because you do not regard the opinion of people[l] but teach the way of God in truth. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” 15 But because he[m] knew their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius so that I can look at it!”[n] 16 So they brought one.[o] And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 And Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!” And they were utterly amazed at him.
A Question About Marriage and the Resurrection
18 And Sadducees—who say there is no resurrection—came up to him and began to ask[p] him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone’s brother dies and he leaves behind a wife and does not leave a child, that his brother should take the wife and father[q] descendants for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife. And when he[r] died, he did not leave descendants. 21 And the second took her, and he died without leaving descendants. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven did not leave descendants. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise, whose[s] wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife. 24 Jesus said to them, “Are you not deceived because of this, because you[t] do not know the scriptures or the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 Now concerning the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses in the passage about the bush[u] how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’?[v] 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are very much mistaken!”
