Psalm 107-109

God takes care of his people[a]

107 Thank the Lord because he is good.
His faithful love for his people continues for ever.
Everyone that the Lord has rescued
    should tell others.
Tell them how he has rescued you
    from the enemy's power.
He brought his people from foreign countries.
He brought them together from the east and the west,
from the north, and from the south.[b]

Some of them travelled through the wilderness
on a road that went nowhere.
They did not find any city to live in.
They were hungry and thirsty.
They were very weak and nearly dead.
Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
He led them along a straight road,
to arrive at a city where they could live.
So God's people should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
He gives drink to people who are thirsty.
He gives plenty of good things to hungry people.

10 Some people sat in a completely dark place.
Iron chains held them as prisoners,
    and they were very sad.
11 They had refused to obey God's commands.
They did not accept the teaching of the Most High God.
12 Because of that, God caused them to become weak
    from very hard work.
When they fell down,
nobody would help them to stand up.
13 Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
14 He took them out of the completely dark place.
He broke away the chains that held them.
15 So they should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
16 He broke bronze gates into pieces
and he cut through iron bars.[c]

17 Some people became fools
    and they turned against God.
They had trouble and pain
    because of their sins.
18 They did not want to eat any food,
    so they nearly died.
19 Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
20 He sent his word to them
and he made them well again.
He rescued them from the deep hole of death.
21 So they should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
22 They should offer sacrifices to thank God.
They should sing aloud
to tell about what he has done.

23 Some people were traders
who travelled far across the sea in ships.
24 They saw the great things that the Lord did,
even in the middle of the deep seas.
25 He would command a storm to come,
so that the wind caused big waves to rise up.
26 The waves threw the ships up high in the air,
    then dropped them deep down.
The danger made the sailors afraid,
and they thought that they would die.
27 Like drunk people, they could not stand or walk properly.
They did not know what to do!
28 Because of their trouble,
they called to the Lord for help.
He rescued them from their troubles.
29 He caused the storm to stop,
so that the waves became quiet.
30 The sailors were happy when it became quiet.
God led them safely to the port,
    where they wanted to go.
31 So they should thank the Lord
    because of his faithful love.
They should thank him for the great things
    that he does for people.
32 They should praise the Lord
    when they meet together.
They should praise him
at the meeting of their leaders.

33-34 In places where people are wicked,
God makes the streams and rivers become dry,
so that the land becomes a desert.
He makes good land
    become a salty wilderness.
35 But for his people, he changes deserts
    to become pools of water.
He makes springs of water in dry land.
36 He lets hungry people live there safely.
They can build a city for themselves.
37 They plant crops in their fields,
and they plant vines to grow grapes.
They have plenty of food to eat.
38 He blesses them,
so that they have many children.
Their animals also grow in number.
39 But they may become weak and few in number,
because of cruel enemies who give them trouble.
40 Then God causes the enemy's leaders to become ashamed.
He makes them travel on roads that go nowhere.
41 But for people who are poor and weak,
he rescues them from their trouble.
He gives them many children,
so that they have big families.
42 Good people see what God has done,
    and it makes them happy.
Wicked people have nothing to say!

43 Wise people should think about these things.
They should understand the Lord's faithful love for his people.

This psalm is a song that David wrote.

A prayer for help[d]

108 God, I have decided to trust you always.
I will sing songs to praise you,
    with all that I am.
I will pick up my harp and my lyre.
I will make music as the sun rises!
Lord, I will thank you in front of all the people.
I will sing to praise you,
    so that all nations hear.
Your faithful love is great.
It is higher than the skies.
Your truth reaches beyond the clouds.
God, show how great you are,
    high above the sky!
Let everybody on the earth see your glory.
Use your power to rescue us!
    Answer our prayers!
Then the people that you love will be safe.
God has spoken from his holy place![e]
He has promised:
‘I will show my power!
I will make Shechem into separate pieces.
    I will measure Succoth Valley.
Gilead belongs to me,
    and so does Manasseh.
Ephraim is like my helmet for war.
Judah has the authority of my royal sceptre.[f]
But Moab is the place where I wash my hands.
Edom is my servant.
I can throw my shoes at him!
I will shout aloud,
because I have won against the Philistines.’[g]

10 Who will lead me into the strong city?
Who will take me to fight and win against Edom?[h]
11 God, have you really turned against us?
Will you not lead our armies into battle?
12 Help us to fight against our enemies,
because help from men is useless!
13 With God's help, we will win!
He will beat down our enemies for us.

David wrote this psalm for the music leader.

A prayer for help in trouble[i]

109 You are the God that I praise.
    Let me hear you speak!
Wicked people are saying bad things against me.
They are telling lies about me.
They are all round me,
    and they say cruel things.
I have done nothing against them,
    but they still attack me.
I have loved them,
    but they still accuse me.
I will continue to pray for them.[j]
I have been kind to them,
but they do bad things to me in return.
I have loved them,
but they hate me in return.

Find an evil man to judge my enemy!
Put somebody at his right side to accuse him!
When they judge him,
    show that he is guilty.
Show that even his prayers are a sin.
Make his life very short!
Let somebody else do the job which he did.
May he soon die,
so that his children have no father,
and his wife has no husband.
10 Cause his children to have no home,
so that they go from place to place,
and ask people to give them food.
11 May the people who lent money to my enemy,
take away everything that belonged to him.
Let strangers take everything
that he worked hard to get for himself.
12 Do not let anyone be kind to him.
Do not let anyone help his children,
even when they have no father.
13 Remove all the descendants in his family.
When his children die,
may nobody remember his family any more!
14 Lord, please remember his ancestors sins.
Please do not forgive his mother's sins.
15 Lord, never forget his family's sins.
May nobody on earth remember his family's name.
16 My enemy was never kind to anyone.
He was cruel to poor, weak, and helpless people.
He even caused them to die,
17 He loved to curse people.
Now may those curses happen to him!
He never asked God to bless other people,
so nobody will ask God to bless him!
18 He always cursed others,
as he always put on clothes.
So those curses have become like his food and drink.
May they go deep inside him,
like olive oil that goes into his bones.
19 Then curses will truly be his clothes.
They will be like the belt that he wears every day.

20 Yes, Lord, please punish all my enemies like that,
because they say evil things to accuse me!
21 You, Almighty Lord, must help me!
Show that your name is great.
Rescue me,
because your faithful love is good.
22 I am weak and helpless.
My heart beats fast inside me.
23 I will soon be gone,
like a shadow that disappears in the evening.
I am like an insect
    that the wind blows away.
24 I am so hungry that my knees shake.
I am so thin that my bones show.
25 My enemies laugh at me!
When they see me,
they shake their heads at me.
26 Lord my God, please help me!
Please rescue me,
    because of your faithful love.
27 Lord, cause my enemies to know
that you are the one who has rescued me.
28 They may curse me,
    but you will bless me.
When they attack me,
    they will become ashamed.
But I will be very happy,
    as your servant.
29 Shame will come on my enemies.
It will cover them like a coat.

30 I will thank the Lord with a loud voice!
I will praise him,
in front of a big crowd of people.
31 He stands beside poor people,
and he is ready to help them.
When cruel people accuse a weak person,
the Lord saves that person's life.
So I will praise the Lord.

1 Corinthians 4

Church leaders

This is how you should think about us, who are leaders in the church. We are Christ's servants. God has also given a special job to us. We must explain his message to people so that they understand it. Anyone who has that kind of job must do what his master wants. That is the important thing.

So what you think about me does not matter to me. What you decide, or what any human authority decides, is not important. I do not even try to decide about myself. I am sure in my own mind that I have not done anything wrong. But that does not make me right. Only the Lord himself can judge me. So you should not decide about things before the time is right. Wait until the Lord comes again. He will show everything clearly. He will show the bad things that people have done secretly. He will show the secret purpose of people's thoughts. Then God will praise each person in a way that is right for them.

My Christian friends, I want to help you to understand these things. That is why I have used Apollos and myself as examples. You should learn from us what this means: ‘Obey what is written in the Bible.’ None of you should be proud of one leader and not respect another leader. Do not think that any of you are better than anyone else. You received from God everything that you have. So you have no reason to be proud of what you have. It is all a gift!

You already have everything that you need, do you? You think that you are very rich already! You are ready to rule as kings. You no longer need us to help you. I think it would be good if you had really become kings. Then we could also rule together with you! This is what I think: as apostles, God has put us last of everyone. People see us like we are prisoners at the end of the line. They are taking us to die in a public place. Everybody in the world has come to look at us, both people and angels.

10 We have become like fools so that we can serve Christ. But you think that you are wise because you belong to Christ. We seem like weak people, but you seem to be strong! People respect you but they insult us!

11 Until now, we continue to be hungry and thirsty. Our clothes have become old. Sometimes people hit us for no reason. We do not have our own homes. 12 We work hard, so that we become very tired. When people insult us, we ask God to bless them. When people give us trouble, we are patient and brave. 13 When people say bad things against us, we answer with kind words. We have become like dirty things that people throw away. That is still true, even today.

14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed. You are like my own children that I love. So I want to teach you what is right. 15 When I told the good news about Jesus Christ to you, I became like a father for you. You may have ten thousand teachers to help you understand the message about Christ. But I am the only person who is like a father for you. 16 That is why I want you to copy my example. 17 To help you to do that, I have sent Timothy to visit you. He is like a son to me, and I love him very much. He continues to serve the Lord well. He will help you to remember how I live as a Christian. I teach the same things to all groups of Christians everywhere.

18 Some people among you have become proud. They think that I will never come back to warn them. 19 But I will come to visit you again soon, if the Lord wants me to. Then I will find out what these proud people are really like. It is not just the words that they say. I will find out if they have the power of God. 20 When people serve God as their king, they have God's power. They do not just speak proud words. 21 I will come and I will find out what is really true. So you must choose. Will I need to be angry and punish you? Or will I speak kind words to show that I love you? Which do you want me to do?
