Romans 6-7

1 He cometh to sanctification, without which, that no man putteth on Christ’s righteousness, he proveth 4 by an argument taken of Baptism, 12 and thereupon exhorteth to holiness of life, 16 briefly making mention of the Law transgressed.

What [a]shall we say then? Shall we continue still in [b]sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.

[c]How shall we, that are [d]dead to sin, live yet therein?

[e]Know ye not, that (A)all we which have been baptized into [f]Jesus Christ, have been baptized into his death?

(B)We are buried then with him by baptism into his death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead [g]to the glory of the Father, so [h]we also should (C)walk in newness of life.

(D)[i]For if we be planted with him to the [j]similitude of his death, even so shall we [k]be to the similitude of his resurrection,

Knowing this, that our [l]old man is crucified with [m]him, that the body of [n]sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not [o]serve sin,

[p]For he that is dead, is freed from sin.

Wherefore, if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also with him,

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died [q]once to sin: but in that he liveth, he liveth to [r]God.

11 Likewise think ye also, that ye are dead to sin, but are alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 [s]Let not sin [t]reign therefore in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof:

13 Neither [u]give ye your [v]members, as [w]weapons of unrighteousness unto sin: but give yourselves unto God, as they that are alive from the dead, and give your members as weapons of righteousness unto God.

14 [x]For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the Law, but under grace.

15 [y]What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 (E)Know ye not, that to whomsoever ye give yourselves as servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey, whether it be of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 [z]But God be thanked, that ye have been the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart unto the [aa]form of the doctrine, whereunto ye were delivered.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye are made the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of man, because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have given your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity, to commit iniquity, so now give your members servants unto righteousness in holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were [ab]freed from righteousness.

21 [ac]What fruit had ye then in those things, whereof ye are now ashamed? For the [ad]end of those things is death.

22 But now being freed from sin, and made servants unto God, ye have your fruit in holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

23 [ae]For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 He declareth what it is, to be no more under the Law, 2 by an example taken of the Law of marriage, 7, 12 And lest the Law should seem faulty, 14 he proveth, that our sin is the cause, 2, 5 that the same is an occasion of death, 17 which was given us unto life. 21 He setteth out the battle between the flesh and the spirit.

Know [af]ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the Law) that the Law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

(F)For the woman which is in subjection to a man, is bound by the Law to the man, while he liveth: but if the man be dead, she is delivered from the Law of the man.

So then, if while the man liveth, she taketh another man, she shall be [ag]called an (G)adulteress: but if the man be dead, she is free from the Law, so that she is not an adulteress, though she take another man.

[ah]So ye, my brethren, are dead also to the Law by the [ai]body of Christ, that ye should be unto another, even unto him that is raised up from the dead, that we should bring forth [aj]fruit unto [ak]God.

[al]For when we [am]were in the flesh, the [an]affections of sins, which were by the [ao]law, had [ap]force in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death,

But now we are delivered from the Law, he [aq]being dead [ar]in whom we were [as]holden, that we should serve in [at]newness of Spirit, and not in the oldness of the [au]letter.

[av]What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? God forbid. Nay, I knew not sin, but by the Law: for I had not known [aw]lust, except the Law had said, (H)Thou shalt not lust.

But sin took an occasion by the commandment, and wrought in me all manner of concupiscence: for without the Law sin is [ax]dead.

[ay]For I once was alive, without the [az]law: but when the commandment [ba]came, sin revived,

10 But I [bb]died: and the same commandment which was ordained unto life, was found to be unto me unto death.

11 For sin took occasion by the commandment, and deceived me, and thereby slew me.

12 [bc]Wherefore the Law is (I)holy, and that [bd]commandment is holy, and just, and good.

13 [be]Was that then which is good, [bf]made death unto me? God forbid: but sin, that it might [bg]appear sin, wrought death in me by that which is good, that sin might be [bh]out of measure sinful by the commandment.

14 [bi]For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 [bj]For I [bk]allow not that which I do: for what I [bl]would, that do I not: but what I hate, that do I.

16 If I do then that which I would not, I consent to the Law, that it is good.

17 Now then, it is no more I, that do it, but [bm]sin that dwelleth in me.

18 [bn]For I know, that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me: but I find [bo]no means to perform that which is good,

19 For I do not the good thing, which I would, but the evil, which I would not, that do I.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but the sin that dwelleth in me.

21 [bp]I find then that when I would do good, I am thus yoked, that evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the Law of God, concerning the [bq]inner man.

23 But I see another Law in my members, rebelling against the law of my [br]mind, and leading me captive unto the law of sin, which is in my members.

24 [bs]O [bt]wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death!

25 I [bu]thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Then I [bv]myself in my mind serve the Law of God, but in my flesh the law of sin.
