1 John 4-5

1 Having spoken somewhat touching the trying of spirits: 4 For some speak after the world, 5 and some after God. 7 He returneth to charity, 11, 19 and by the example of God he exhorteth to brotherly love.

Dearly [a]beloved, believe not every [b]spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: for many false Prophets are gone out into the world.

[c]Hereby shall ye know the Spirit of God, [d]Every spirit which confesseth that [e]Jesus Christ is come in the [f]flesh is of God.

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God: but this is the spirit of Antichrist, of whom ye have heard, how that he should come, and now already he is in this world.

[g]Little children, ye are of God, and have overcome them: for greater is he that is in you, than he that is in this world.

[h]They are of this world, therefore spake they of this world, and this world heareth them.

[i]We are of God, (A)he that knoweth God, heareth us: he that is not of God heareth us not. Hereby know we the [j]Spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

[k]Beloved, let us love one another: [l]for love cometh of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

He that loveth not, knoweth not God, [m]for God is [n]love.

(B)Herein was that love of God made manifest amongst us, because God sent that his only begotten Son into this world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is that love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be a reconciliation for our sins.

11 [o]Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

12 (C)[p]No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is [q]perfect in us.

13 Hereby know we, that we dwell in him, and he in us: because he hath given us of his Spirit.

14 [r]And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

15 Whosoever [s]confesseth that Jesus is the Son of God, in him dwelleth God, and he in God.

16 And we have known, and believed the love that God hath in us, [t]God is love, and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 [u]Herein is that love perfect in us, that we should have boldness in the day of judgment: for [v]as he is, even so are we in this world.

18 There is no [w]fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear: for fear hath painfulness: and he that feareth, is not perfect in love.

19 [x]We love him, because he loved us first.

20 [y]If any man say, I love God, and hate his brother, he is a liar: [z]for how can he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, love God whom he hath not seen?

21 (D)[aa]And this commandment have we of him, that he that loveth God, should love his brother also.

1 He showeth that brotherly love and faith are things inseparable: 10 And that there is no faith towards God, but by believing in Christ: 14 Hence proceedeth calling upon God with assurance: 16 and also that our prayers be available for our brethren.

Whosoever [ab]believeth that Jesus is that [ac]Christ, is born of God: and everyone that loveth him, which begat, loveth [ad]him also which is begotten of him.

[ae]In this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his [af]commandments.

[ag]For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: [ah]and his (E)commandments are not [ai]burdenous.

[aj]For all that is born of God, overcometh this world: [ak]and this is that victory that [al]hath overcome this world even our [am]faith.

(F)[an]Who is it that overcometh this world, but he which believeth that Jesus is that Son of God?

[ao]This is that Jesus Christ that came by water and blood: [ap]not by water only, but by water and blood: and it is that [aq]Spirit that beareth witness: for that Spirit is truth.

For there are three, which bear record in heaven, the Father, the [ar]Word, and the holy Ghost: and these three are [as]one.

And there are three, which bear record in the earth, the Spirit, and the Water and the Blood: and these three agree in one.

[at]If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for [au]this is the witness of God, which he testified of his Son.

10 (G)[av]He that believeth in that Son of God, hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God, hath made him a liar, because he believed not the record, that God witnessed of that his Son.

11 [aw]And this is that record, to wit, that God hath given unto us eternal life, and this life is in that his Son.

12 He that hath that Son, hath that life: and he that hath not that Son of God, hath not that life.

13 [ax]These things have I written unto you, that believe in the name of that Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe in the Name of that Son of God.

14 [ay]And this is that assurance that we have in him, (H)that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us.

15 And if we know that he heareth us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions, that we have desired of him.

16 [az]If any man see his brother sin a sin that is not unto death, let him [ba]ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. (I)There is a sin unto death, I say not that thou shouldest pray for it.

17 [bb]All unrighteousness is sin, but there is a sin not unto death.

18 [bc]We know that whosoever is born of God, sinneth not: but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

19 [bd]We know that we are of God, and this whole world lieth in wickedness.

20 But we know that that Son of God is (J)come, and hath given us a mind to know him, which is true, and we are in him that is true, that is, in that his Son Jesus Christ, the same is that very [be]God, and that eternal life.

21 [bf]Little children, keep yourselves from idols, Amen.
