New Testament in a Year
24 Then they summoned[a] the man who used to be blind[b] a second time and said to him, “Promise before God to tell the truth.[c] We know that this man[d] is a sinner.” 25 He replied,[e] “I do not know whether he is a sinner. I do know one thing—that although I was blind, now I can see.” 26 Then they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he cause you to see?”[f] 27 He answered,[g] “I told you already and you didn’t listen.[h] Why do you want to hear it[i] again? You people[j] don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?”
28 They[k] heaped insults[l] on him, saying,[m] “You are his disciple![n] We are disciples of Moses! 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses! We do not know where this man[o] comes from!” 30 The man replied,[p] “This is a remarkable thing,[q] that you don’t know where he comes from, and yet he caused me to see![r] 31 We know that God doesn’t listen to[s] sinners, but if anyone is devout[t] and does his will, God[u] listens to[v] him.[w] 32 Never before[x] has anyone heard of someone causing a man born blind to see.[y] 33 If this man[z] were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They replied,[aa] “You were born completely in sinfulness,[ab] and yet you presume to teach us?”[ac] So they threw him out.
The Man’s Response to Jesus
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, so he found the man[ad] and said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[ae] 36 The man[af] replied,[ag] “And who is he, sir, that[ah] I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus told him, “You have seen him; he[ai] is the one speaking with you.”[aj] 38 [He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.[ak] 39 Jesus[al] said,][am] “For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight,[an] and the ones who see may become blind.”
40 Some of the Pharisees[ao] who were with him heard this[ap] and asked him,[aq] “We are not blind too, are we?”[ar] 41 Jesus replied,[as] “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin,[at] but now because you claim that you can see,[au] your guilt[av] remains.[aw]
