15 3 Saul is commanded to slay Amalek. 9 He spareth Agag, and the best things. 19 Samuel reproveth him. 28 Saul is rejected of the Lord, and his Kingdom given to another. 33 Samuel heweth Agag in pieces.
1 Afterward Samuel said unto Saul, (A)The Lord sent me to anoint thee King over his people, over Israel: now therefore [a]obey the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember what Amalek did to Israel, (B)how they laid wait for them in the way, as they came up from Egypt.
3 Now therefore go, and smite Amalek, and destroy ye all that pertaineth unto them, and have no compassion on them, but [b]slay both man and woman, both infant and suckling, both ox, and sheep, both camel, and ass.
4 ¶ And Saul assembled the people, and [c]numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and [d]set watch at the river.
6 And Saul said unto the [e]Kenites, Go, depart, and get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye showed [f]mercy to all the children of Israel, when they came up from Egypt: and the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 So Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah, as thou comest to Shur, that is before Egypt,
8 And took Agag the King of the Amalekites alive, and destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the better sheep, and the oxen, and the fat beasts, and the lambs, and all that was good, and they would not destroy them; but everything that was vile and nought worth, that they destroyed.
10 ¶ Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,
11 It [g]repenteth me that I have made Saul King; for he is turned from me, and hath not performed my commandments. And Samuel was moved, and cried unto the Lord all night.
12 And when Samuel arose early to meet Saul in the morning, one told Samuel, saying, Saul is gone to Carmel; and behold, he hath made him there a place, from whence he returned, and departed, and is gone down to Gilgal.
13 ¶ Then Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said unto him. Blessed be thou of the Lord, I have fulfilled the [h]commandment of the Lord.
14 But Samuel said, What meaneth then the bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul answered, They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, to sacrifice them unto the Lord thy God, and the remnant have we destroyed.
16 Again Samuel said to Saul, Let me tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17 Then Samuel said, When thou wast [i]little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? for the Lord anointed thee King over Israel.
18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and destroy those sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them, until thou destroy them.
19 Now wherefore hast thou not obeyed the voice of the Lord, but hast turned to the prey, and hast done wickedly in the sight of the Lord?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, [j]I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep, and oxen, and the chiefest of the things which should have been destroyed, to offer unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as when the voice of the Lord is obeyed? behold, (C)to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken is better than the fat of rams.
23 For [k]rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and transgression is wickedness and idolatry. Because thou hast cast away the word of the Lord, therefore he hath cast away thee from being king.
24 Then Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the Commandment of the Lord, and thy words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25 Now therefore I pray thee, take away my [l]sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord.
26 But Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast cast away the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath cast away thee, that thou shalt not be King over Israel.
27 And as Samuel turned himself to go away, he caught the lap of his coat, and it rent.
28 Then Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to thy [m]neighbor, that is better than thou.
29 For indeed the [n]strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man that he should repent.
30 Then he said, I have sinned: but honor me, I pray thee, before the Elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.
31 ¶ So Samuel turned again, and followed Saul: and Saul worshipped the Lord.
32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites: and Agag came unto him [o]pleasantly, and Agag said, Truly the [p]bitterness of death is passed.
33 And Samuel said, (D)As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among other women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 ¶ So Samuel departed to [q]Ramah, and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35 And Samuel came no more to [r]see Saul until the day of his death: but Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord [s]repented that he made Saul King over Israel.
13 1 He willeth that we submit ourselves to Magistrates: 8 To love our neighbor: 13 To love uprightly, 14 and to put on Christ.
1 Let (A)[a]every [b]soul be subject unto the higher [c]powers: [d]for there is no power but of God: and the powers that be, are [e]ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, shall receive to themselves condemnation.
3 [f]For Magistrates are not to be feared for good works, but for evil. [g]Wilt thou then be without fear of the power? do well: so shalt thou have praise of the same.
4 For he is the minister of God for thy wealth: [h]but if thou do evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword for nought: for he is the minister of God to [i]take vengeance on him that doeth evil.
5 [j]Wherefore ye must be subject, not because of wrath only, but [k]also for conscience sake.
6 [l]For, for this cause ye pay also tribute: for they are God’s ministers, applying themselves for the same thing.
7 (B)Give to all men therefore their duty: tribute, to whom ye owe tribute: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom [m]fear: honor, to whom ye owe [n]honor.
8 [o]Owe nothing to any man, but to love one another: [p]for he that loveth another, hath fulfilled the [q]Law.
9 For this, (C)Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is [r]briefly comprehended in this saying, even in this, (D)Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
10 Love doeth not evil to his neighbor: therefore is love the (E)fulfilling of the Law.
11 [s]And that, considering the season, that it is now time that we should arise from sleep: for now is our salvation nearer, than when we believed it.
12 The night is past, and the day is [t]at hand, let us therefore cast away the works [u]of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light,
13 So that we walk honestly, as in the day: not in (F)gluttony, and drunkenness, neither in chambering and wantonness, nor in strife and envying.
14 (G)But [v]put ye on the Lord JESUS CHRIST, and take no thought for the flesh, to fulfill the lust of it.
52 4 Jerusalem is taken. 10 Zedekiah’s sons are killed before his face, and his eyes put out. 13 The city is burned. 31 Jehoiachin is brought forth of prison, and fed like a king.
1 Zedekiah (A)was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem, and his mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
2 And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
3 [a]Doubtless because the wrath of the Lord was against Jerusalem and Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence, therefore Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babel.
4 (B)But in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month the tenth day of the month came Nebuchadnezzar King of Babel, he and all his host against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of the king Zedekiah.
6 Now in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no more bread for the people of the land.
7 Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went out of the city by night, by the [b]way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the King’s garden: (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about) and they went by the way of the wilderness.
8 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and took Zedekiah in the desert of Jericho, and all the host was scattered from him.
9 Then they took the King and carried him up unto the king of Babel to Riblah in the land of Hamath, [c]where he gave judgment upon him.
10 And the king of Babel slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.
11 Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and the king of Babel bound him in chains, and carried him to Babel, and put him in prison till the day of his death.
12 Now in the fifth month in the [d]tenth day of the month (which was the nineteenth year of the king Nebuchadnezzar King of Babel) came Nebuzaradan chief steward which [e]stood before the king of Babel in Jerusalem,
13 And burnt the House of the Lord, and the King’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the great houses burnt he with fire.
14 And all the army of the Chaldeans that were with the chief steward, brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about.
15 Then Nebuzaradan the chief steward carried away captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the city, and those that were fled, and fallen to the King of Babel, with the rest of the multitude.
16 But Nebuzaradan the chief steward left certain of the poor of the land, to dress the vines, and to till the land.
17 Also the [f]pillars of brass that were in the House of the Lord, and the bases, and the brazen Sea, that was in the House of the Lord, the Chaldeans brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babel.
18 The pots also and the [g]besoms, and the instruments of music, and the basins, and the incense dishes, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away.
19 And the bowls, and the ashpans, and the basins, and the pots, and the candlesticks, and the incense dishes, and the cups, and all that was of gold, and that was of silver, took the chief steward away,
20 With the two pillars, one Sea, and twelve brazen bulls, that were under the bases, which King Solomon had made in the House of the Lord: the brass of all these vessels was without [h]weight.
21 And concerning the pillars, the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits, and a thread of twelve cubits did compass it, and the thickness thereof was four fingers: it was hollow.
22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it, and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with network, and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about, all of brass: the second pillar also, and the pomegranates were like unto these.
23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side: and all the pomegranates upon the network were an [i]hundred round about.
24 And the chief steward took Seraiah the chief Priest, and Zephaniah [j]the second Priest, and the three keepers of the door.
25 He took also out of the city an Eunuch, which had the oversight of the men of war, and [k]seven men that were in the King’s presence, which were found in the city, and Sopher captain of the host, who mustered the people of the land, and threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.
26 Nebuzaradan the chief steward took them, and brought them to the King of Babel to Riblah.
27 And the king of Babel smote them, and slew them in Riblah, in the land of Hamath: thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land.
28 ¶ This is the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar carried away captive, in the [l]seventh year, even three thousand Jews, and three and twenty.
29 In the [m]eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar, he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty and two [n]persons.
30 In the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan the chief steward carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred forty and five persons: all the persons were four thousand and six hundred.
31 And in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin King of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, Evil-Merodach king of Babel, in the first year of his reign, [o]lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him out of prison,
32 And spake kindly unto him, and set his throne above the throne of the Kings, that were with him in Babel,
33 And changed his prison [p]garments, and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life.
34 His portion was a [q]continual portion given him of the king of Babel, every day a certain, all the days of his life until he died.
31 1 David delivered from some great danger, first rehearseth what meditation he had by the power of faith, when death was before his eyes, his enemy being ready to take him. 15 Then he affirmeth that the favor of God is always ready to those that fear him. 20 Finally he exhorteth all the faithful to trust in God and to love him, because he preserveth and strengtheneth them, as they may see by his example.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David.
1 In (A)thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: let me never be confounded: deliver me in thy [a]righteousness.
2 Bow down thine ear to me: make haste to deliver me: be unto me a strong rock, and an house of defense to save me.
3 For thou art my rock and my fortress: therefore for thy Name’s sake direct me and guide me.
4 Draw me out of the [b]net, that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.
5 Into thine [c]hand I commend my spirit: for thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
6 I have hated them that give themselves to deceitful vanities: for I [d]trust in the Lord.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast seen my trouble: thou hast known my soul in adversities,
8 And thou hast not shut me up in the hand of the enemy, but hast set my feet at [e]large.
9 Have mercy upon me, O Lord: for I am in trouble: mine [f]eye, my soul and my belly are consumed with grief.
10 For my life is wasted with heaviness, and my years with mourning: my strength faileth for my pain, and my bones are consumed.
11 I was a [g]reproach among all mine enemies, but specially among my neighbors: and a fear to mine acquaintance, [h]who seeing me in the street, fled from me.
12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the railing of [i]great men: fear was on every side, while they conspired together against me, and consulted to take my life.
14 But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, [j]Thou art my God.
15 My [k]times are in thine hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and save me through thy mercy.
17 Let me not be confounded, O Lord: for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be put to confusion, and to [l]silence in the grave.
18 Let the lying lips be made dumb, which cruelly, proudly, and spitefully speak against the righteous.
19 How great is thy goodness, which thou [m]hast laid up for them that fear thee! and done to them that trust in thee, even before the sons of men!
20 Thou dost hide them [n][o]privily in thy presence from the pride of men: thou keepest them secretly in thy Tabernacle from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the Lord: for he hath showed his marvelous kindness toward me in a [p]strong city.
22 Though I said in mine [q]haste, I am cast out of thy sight, yet thou heardest the voice of my prayer, when I cried unto thee.
23 Love ye the Lord all his [r]Saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and rewardeth abundantly the proud doer.
24 All ye that trust in the Lord, be [s]strong, and he shall establish your heart.
