And Hannah [a]prayed, and said, Mine heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine [b]horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is [c]enlarged over mine enemies, because I rejoice in thy salvation.

There is none holy as the Lord: yea, there is none besides thee, and there is no god like our God.

Speak [d]no more presumptuously: let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him enterprises are established.

The bow and the mighty men are broken, and the weak have girded themselves with strength.

They that were full, are hired forth for [e]bread, and the hungry are no more hired, so that the barren hath borne [f]seven: and she that had many children is feeble.

(A)The Lord killeth and maketh alive: bringeth down to the grave and raiseth up.

The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich: bringeth low, and exalteth.

(B)He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among [g]princes, and to make them inherit the seat of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the [h]Lord’s, and he hath set the world upon them.

He will keep the feet of his Saints, and the wicked shall keep silence in darkness: for in his own might shall no man be strong.

10 The Lord’s adversaries shall be destroyed, and out of heaven shall he (C)thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the world, and shall give power unto his [i]King, and exalt the horn of his Anointed.

11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house, and the child did minister unto the [j]Lord before Eli the Priest.

12 ¶ Now the sons of Eli were wicked men, and [k]knew not the Lord.

13 For the Priests’ custom toward the people was this: when any man offered sacrifice, the Priest’s [l]boy came, while the flesh was seething, and a fleshhook with three teeth in his hand,

14 And thrust it into the kettle, or into the caldron, or into the pan, or into the pot: [m]all that the fleshhook brought up, the Priest took for himself: thus they did unto all the Israelites, that came thither to Shiloh.

15 Yea, before they burnt the [n]fat, the Priest’s boy came and said unto the man that offered, Give me flesh to roast for the Priest: for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

16 And if any man said unto him, Let them burn the fat according to the [o]custom, then take as much as thine heart [p]desireth: then he would answer, No, but thou shalt give it now: and if thou wilt not, I will take it by force.

17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men [q]abhorred the offering of the Lord.

18 ¶ Now Samuel being a young child ministered before the Lord, girded with a linen (D)Ephod.

19 And his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband, to offer the yearly sacrifice.

20 And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The Lord give thee seed of this woman, for [r]the petition that she asked of the Lord: and they departed unto their place.

21 And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons, and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.

22 ¶ So Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel, and how they lay with the women that [s]assembled at the door of the Tabernacle of the Congregation.

23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for of all this people I hear evil reports of you.

24 Do no more, my sons: for it is no good report that I hear, which is, that ye make the Lord’s people to [t]trespass.

25 If one man sin against another, the Judge shall judge it: but if a man sin against the Lord, who will plead for him? Notwithstanding they obeyed not the voice of their father, because the Lord [u]would slay them.

26 ¶ (Now the child Samuel profited, and grew, and was in favor both with the Lord and also with men.)

27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did not I plainly appear unto the house of thy [v]father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?

28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my Priest, to offer upon my altar, and to burn incense, and to wear an Ephod before me, and (E)I gave unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel.

29 Wherefore have you [w]kicked against my sacrifice and mine offering, which I commanded in my Tabernacle, and honorest thy children above me, to make yourselves fat of the firstfruits of all the offerings of Israel my people?

30 Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said, that thine house, and the house of thy father should walk before me forever: but now the Lord saith, [x]It shall not be so: for them that honor me, I will honor, and they that despise me, shall be despised.

31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine [y]arm, and the arm of thy fathers house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.

32 And thou [z]shalt see thine enemy in the habitation of the Lord in all things wherewith God shall bless Israel, and there shall not be an old man in thine house forever.

33 Nevertheless, I will not destroy every one of thine from mine altar, to make thine eyes to fail, and to make thine heart sorrowful: and all the multitude of thine house shall [aa]die when they be men.

34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both.

35 And I will stir me up a [ab]faithful Priest, that shall do according to mine heart, and according to my mind: and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine Anointed forever.

36 And all that are left in thine house, shall come and [ac]bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Appoint me, I pray thee, to one of the Priest’s offices, that I may eat a morsel [of] bread.

Romans 2

1 He bringeth all before the judgment seat of God. 12 The excuse the Gentiles might pretend, 14 of ignorance, he taketh quite away. 17 He urgeth the Jews with the written Law, 23 in which they boasted. 27 And so maketh both Jew and Gentile alike.

Therefore [a]thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that condemnest: for in that thou condemnest another, thou condemnest thyself: for thou that condemnest, doest the same things.

But we [b]know that the judgment of God is according to [c]truth, against them which commit such things.

And thinkest thou this, O thou man, that condemnest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

[d]Or despisest thou the riches of his bountifulness, and patience, and long sufferance, not knowing that the bountifulness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

But thou, after thine hardness, and heart that cannot repent, (A)[e]heapest up as a treasure unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and of the declaration of the just judgment of God,

(B)[f]Who will reward every man according to his works:

That is, to them which through patience in well doing, seek [g]glory, and honor, and immortality, everlasting life:

But unto them that are contentious, and disobey the [h]truth, and obey unrighteousness, shall be [i]indignation and wrath.

Tribulation and anguish shall be upon the soul of every man that doeth evil: of the Jew first, and also of the Grecian.

10 But to every man that doeth good, shall be glory, and honor, and peace: to the Jew first, and also to the Grecian.

11 For there is [j]no respect of persons with God.

12 [k]For as many as have sinned without the Law, shall perish also without the Law: and as many as have sinned in the Law, shall be judged by the Law,

13 [l](For the hearers of the Law are not righteous before God: but the doers of the Law shall be [m]justified.

14 [n]For when the Gentiles which have [o]not the Law, do by [p]nature the things contained in the Law, they having not the Law, are a Law unto themselves,

15 Which show the effect of the Law [q]written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness and their thoughts accusing one another, or excusing.)

16 [r]At the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to [s]my Gospel.

17 [t]Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the Law, and gloriest in God,

18 And knowest his will, and [u][v]triest the things that dissent from it, in that thou art instructed by the Law:

19 And persuadest thyself that thou art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

20 An instructor of them which lack discretion, a teacher of the unlearned, which hast the [w]form of knowledge, and of the truth in the [x]law.

21 Thou therefore, which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest, A man should not steal, dost thou steal?

22 Thou that sayest, A man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, committest thou sacrilege?

23 Thou that gloriest in the Law, through breaking the Law, dishonorest thou God?

24 For the Name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, (C)as it is written.

25 [y]For circumcision verily is profitable, if thou do the Law: but if thou be a transgressor of the Law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

26 Therefore [z]if the uncircumcision keep the ordinances of the Law, shall not his [aa]uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

27 And shall not [ab]uncircumcision which is by nature (if it keep the Law) condemn thee which by the [ac]letter and circumcision art a transgressor of the Law?

28 For he is not a Jew, which is one [ad]outward: neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

29 But he is a Jew which is one within, and the circumcision is of the heart, in the [ae]spirit, not in the letter, whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Jeremiah 40

40 Jeremiah hath license to go whither he will. 6 He dwelleth with the people that remain with Gedaliah.

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord after that Nebuzaradan the chief steward had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babel.

[a]And the chief steward took Jeremiah and said unto him, The Lord thy God hath pronounced this plague upon this place.

Now the Lord hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have [b]sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

And now behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were on thine hands: if it please thee to come with me into Babel, come, and I will look well unto thee: but if it please thee not to come with me into Babel, [c]tarry still: behold, all the land is [d]before thee: whither it seemeth good, and convenient for thee to go, thither go.

For yet he was not returned: therefore he said, Return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babel hath made governor over all the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people, or go wheresoever it pleaseth thee to go. So the chief steward gave him vittles and a reward, and let him go.

Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, to [e]Mizpah, and dwelt there with him among the people that were left in the land.

Now when all the captains of the host, [f]which were in the fields, even they and their men heard, that the king of Babel had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and that he had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, that were not carried away captive to Babel,

Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even [g]Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai, the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of Maachathi, they and their men.

And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan (A)sware unto them, and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babel, and it shall be well with you:

10 As for me, Behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to [h]serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but you, gather you wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities, that ye have [i]taken.

11 Likewise when all the Jews that were in [j]Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babel had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan,

12 Even all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits, very much.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the host, that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

14 And said unto him, Knowest thou not that [k]Baalis the King of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.

15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it. Wherefore should he kill thee, that all the Jews, which are gathered unto thee, should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?

16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt [l]not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Psalm 15-16

15 1 This Psalm teacheth on what condition God did choose the Jews for his peculiar people; and wherefore he placed his Temple among them, which was to the intent that they by living uprightly and godly, might witness that they were his special and holy people.

A Psalm of David.

Lord, who shall dwell in thy Tabernacle? who shall rest in thine holy Mountain?

He that [a]walketh uprightly and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

He that slandereth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor receiveth a false report against his neighbor.

[b]In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honoreth them that fear the Lord: he that sweareth to his own hindrance and changeth not.

He that [c]giveth not his money unto usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent: he that doeth these things, [d]shall never be moved.

16 1 David prayeth to God for succor not for his works, but for his faith’s sake. 4 Protesting that he hateth all idolatry, taking God only for his comfort and felicity. 8 Who suffereth his to lack nothing.

Preserve me, O GOD: for in thee do I [f]trust.

O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my [g]well doing extendeth not to thee,

But to the Saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent: all my delight is in them.

The [h]sorrows of them, that offer to another god, shall be multiplied: [i]their offerings of blood will I not offer, neither make (A)mention of their names with my lips.

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou shalt maintain my lot.

The [j]lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places: yea, I have a fair heritage.

I will praise the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my [k]reins also teach me in the nights.

I have set the Lord always before me: for he is at my right hand: therefore I [l]shall not slide.

Wherefore [m]mine heart is glad, and my tongue rejoiceth: my flesh also doth rest in hope.

10 For thou [n]wilt not leave my soul in the grave: neither wilt thou suffer thine holy One to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy [o]presence is the fullness of joy: and at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.
