33 ¶ And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, Esau came and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah and unto Rachel and unto the two handmaids.
2 And he put the handmaids and their children in front, and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last.
3 And he passed over in front of them and bowed himself to the ground seven times until he came near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
5 ¶ And he lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children whom God hath graciously given thy slave.
6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 And Leah also with her children came near and bowed themselves; and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they also bowed themselves.
8 And he said, What meanest thou by all these droves which I met? And he said, To find grace in the sight of my lord.
9 And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep what thou hast unto thyself.
10 And Jacob said, No, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present from my hand, that for this I have seen thy face as though I had seen the face of God; and do me the pleasure.
11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee because God has dealt graciously with me, and all that is here is mine. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
13 And he said unto him, My lord knows that the children are tender, and the sheep and cows with young are with me; and if men should overdrive them, in one day all the sheep will die.
14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass before his slave; and I will lead on softly, according as the property that goes before me and the children are able to endure until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What for? Let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
16 ¶ So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
18 And Jacob came safe and sound to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram, and pitched his tent before the city.
19 And he bought part of the field where he had spread his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred ewes.
20 And there he erected an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel (the Strong God of Israel).
4 ¶ And he began again to teach by the sea side, and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship and sat in the sea, and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
2 And he taught them many things by parables and said unto them in his doctrine,
3 Hearken; Behold, the sower went out to sow;
4 and it came to pass as he sowed some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
5 And some fell on stony ground where it had not much earth, and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth;
6 but when the sun was up, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8 And other fell on good ground and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased and brought forth: some thirty and some sixty and some a hundred.
9 And he said unto them, He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And when he was alone, those that were close to him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but unto those that are without, all these things are done in parables,
12 that seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? How then will ye understand all the parables?
14 The sower is he who sows the word.
15 And these are those by the way side, in whom the word is sown, but when they have heard, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 And likewise these are those who are sown on stony ground, who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness
17 but have no root in themselves and are temporal; afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
18 And these are those who are sown among thorns, such as hear the word,
19 and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
20 And these are those who are sown in good ground, such as hear the word and receive it and bring forth fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.
21 ¶ And he also said unto them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel or under the bed? and not to be set in the lampstand?
22 For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested; nor secret which shall not be exposed.
23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he also said unto them, Take heed what ye hear; with the measure ye measure by, ye shall be measured by others, and unto you that hear shall more be added.
25 For he that has, to him shall be given; and he that has not, from him shall be taken even that which he has.
26 He also said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground
27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring forth and grow up, he knows not how.
28 For the earth brings forth fruit of herself: first the blade, then the ear, after that the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he puts in the sickle because the harvest is come.
30 He also said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we compare it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that are in the earth;
32 but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs and shoots out great branches, so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
33 And with many such parables he spoke the word unto them as they were able to hear it.
34 But without a parable he did not speak unto them; and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
35 ¶ And that same day, when evening was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow; and they awoke him and said unto him, Master, dost thou not care that we perish?
39 And as he arose, he rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another, Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
9 ¶ Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his law drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, it was turned to the contrary; for the Jews took dominion over those that hated them.
2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt; and no one could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples.
3 And all the princes of the provinces and the lieutenants and the captains and officers of the king helped the Jews because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
4 For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword and slaughter and destruction and did what they would unto those that hated them.
6 And in Shushan, the palace, the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.
7 Then they also slew Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,
8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,
9 Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vajezatha,
10 the ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedatha; the enemy of the Jews, they slew, but on the spoil they did not lay their hand.
11 On the same day the number of those that were slain in Shushan, the palace, was brought before the king.
12 And the king said unto Esther, the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan, the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Now what is thy petition, and it shall be granted thee? What is thy request further, and it shall be done?
13 Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows. {Heb. stake}
14 And the king commanded it to be so done; and it was given as law at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.
15 And the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the spoil they did not lay their hand.
16 And the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces also gathered themselves together and stood for their lives and had rest from their enemies and slew of their foes seventy-five thousand, but they did not lay their hands on the spoil,
17 on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same they rested and made it a day of banquet and gladness.
18 But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested and made it a day of banquet and gladness.
19 Therefore, the Jews of the villages that dwelt in the unwalled towns made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and banquet and a good day and of sending portions one to another.
20 ¶ And Mordecai wrote these things and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far,
21 to establish this among them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,
22 as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy and from mourning into a good day, that they should make them days of banquet and joy and of sending portions one to another and gifts to the poor.
23 And the Jews accepting this began to do as Mordecai had written unto them.
24 Because Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them and to destroy them,
25 but when she came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26 Therefore, they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore, for all the words of this letter and of that which they had seen concerning this matter and which had come unto them,
27 the Jews ordained and took upon them and upon their seed and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing and according to their appointed time each year,
28 and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.
29 Then Esther, the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai, the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.
30 And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
31 to confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai, the Jew, and Esther, the queen, had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the words of the fastings and their cry.
32 And the commandment of Esther confirmed these words of Purim, and it was written in the book.
10 ¶ And King Ahasuerus laid tribute upon the land and upon the isles of the sea.
2 And all the acts of his power and of his might and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, unto which the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
3 For Mordecai, the Jew, was next unto King Ahasuerus and great among the Jews and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace unto all his seed.
4 ¶ What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, has found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he has reason to glory in himself, but not before God.
3 For what does the scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 But unto him that works, the reward is not reckoned as grace, but as debt.
5 But to him that does not work, but believes in him that justifies the ungodly, the faith is counted as righteousness.
6 Even as David also describes the blessedness of the man unto whom God doth attribute righteousness without works,
7 saying, Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute sin.
9 ¶ Is this blessedness, therefore, only upon the circumcision or also upon the uncircumcision? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the circumcision as a sign, as a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had, yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all the uncircumcised believers, that it might be counted unto them also as righteousness,
12 that he be the father of the circumcision: not only to those who are of the circumcision, but also unto those who walk in the steps of the faith that was in our father Abraham before he was circumcised.
13 For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, faith is in vain, and the promise annulled,
15 because the law works wrath; for where there is no law, there is no rebellion either.
16 Therefore by faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to that which is of the law, but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
17 ¶ as it is written, As a father of many Gentiles have I placed thee before God, whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which are not as those that are.
18 Who believed to wait against all hope, that he might become the father of many Gentiles, according to that which had been spoken unto him, So shall thy seed be.
19 And he did not weaken in faith: he considered not his own body now dead when he was about one hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb;
20 he doubted not the promise of God, with unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 being fully persuaded that he was also powerful to do all that he had promised;
22 therefore, his faith was also attributed unto him as righteousness.
23 ¶ Now it is not written for his sake alone that it was so reckoned to him,
24 but for us also to whom it shall be so reckoned, that is, to those that believe in him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25 who was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification.
