Solomon’s Officials

4 King Solomon ruled over Israel,^{(A) 2} and these were his officials:^(B)

⁷ Solomon had 12 deputies for all Israel. They provided food for the king and his household; each one made provision for one month out of the year.^{(C) 8} These were their names:

There was one deputy in the land of Judah.^[a]

Solomon’s Provisions

²⁰ Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea;^(D) they were eating, drinking, and rejoicing. ^21 [b]Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt.^(E) They offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.^(F)

²² Solomon’s provisions for one day were 150 bushels^[c] of fine flour and 300 bushels^[d] of meal, ²³ 10 fattened oxen, 20 range oxen, and 100 sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and pen-fed poultry,^{[e](G) 24} for he had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates from Tiphsah to Gaza and over all the kings west of the Euphrates. He had peace on all his surrounding borders. ²⁵ Throughout Solomon’s reign, Judah and Israel lived in safety from Dan to Beer-sheba,^(H) each man under his own vine and his own fig tree.^{(I) 26} Solomon had 40,000^[f] stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen.^{(J) 27} Each of those deputies for a month in turn provided food for King Solomon and for everyone who came to King Solomon’s table. They neglected nothing. ²⁸ Each man brought the barley and the straw for the chariot teams and the other horses^(K) to the required place according to his assignment.^[g]

Solomon’s Wisdom and Literary Gifts

²⁹ God gave Solomon wisdom, very great insight, and understanding^(L) as vast as the sand on the seashore. ³⁰ Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East,^(M) greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.^{(N) 31} He was wiser than anyone^(O)—wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite,^(P) and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, sons of Mahol.^(Q) His reputation extended to all the surrounding nations.^(R)

³² Solomon composed 3,000 proverbs,^(S) and his songs numbered 1,005.^{(T) 33} He described trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall. He also taught about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. ³⁴ People came from everywhere, sent by every king on earth who had heard of his wisdom, to listen to Solomon’s wisdom.^(U)

Hiram’s Building Materials

5 ^[h]Hiram king of Tyre^(V) sent his servants to Solomon when he heard that he had been anointed king in his father’s place,^(W) for Hiram had always been friends with David.^(X)

² Solomon sent this message to Hiram: ³ “You know my father David was not able to build a temple for the name of Yahweh his God. This was because of the warfare all around him until the Lord put his enemies under his feet.^{(Y) 4} The Lord my God has now given me rest all around; there is no enemy or crisis.^{(Z) 5} So I plan to build a temple for the name of Yahweh my God,^(AA) according to what the Lord promised my father David: ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the temple for My name.’^(AB)

⁶ “Therefore, command that cedars from Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants’ wages according to whatever you say, for you know that not a man among us knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”^(AC)

⁷ When Hiram heard Solomon’s words, he greatly rejoiced and said, “May the Lord be praised today!^(AD) He has given David a wise son to be over this great people!” ⁸ Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying, “I have heard your message; I will do everything you want regarding the cedar and cypress timber. ⁹ My servants will bring the logs down from Lebanon to the sea, and I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place you indicate. I will break them apart there, and you can take them away. You then can meet my needs by providing my household with food.”^(AE)

¹⁰ So Hiram provided Solomon with all the cedar and cypress timber he wanted, ¹¹ and Solomon provided Hiram with 100,000 bushels^[i] of wheat as food for his household and 110,000 gallons^[j] of oil from crushed olives.^(AF) Solomon did this for Hiram year after year.

¹² The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him.^(AG) There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.^(AH)

Solomon’s Work Force

¹³ Then King Solomon drafted forced laborers from all Israel;^(AI) the labor force numbered 30,000 men. ¹⁴ He sent 10,000 to Lebanon each month in shifts; one month they were in Lebanon, two months they were at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor. ¹⁵ Solomon had 70,000 porters and 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains,^{(AJ) 16} not including his 3,300^[k] deputies^(AK) in charge of the work. They ruled over the people doing the work. ¹⁷ The king commanded them to quarry large, costly stones to lay the foundation of the temple with dressed stones.^{(AL) 18} So Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders,^(AM) along with the Gebalites,^(AN) quarried the stone and prepared the timber and stone for the temple’s construction.

From Death to Life

2 And you were dead^(A) in your trespasses and sins ² in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world,^(B) according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens,^[a](C) the spirit^(D) now working in the disobedient.^{[b] 3} We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly^(E) desires, carrying out the inclinations^(F) of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath^(G) as the others were also. ⁴ But God, who is rich in mercy,^(H) because of His great love^(I) that He had for us,^{[c] 5} made us alive^(J) with the Messiah even though we were dead^(K) in trespasses. You are saved by grace! ⁶ Together with Christ Jesus He also raised us up and seated us in the heavens,^{(L) 7} so that in the coming ages^(M) He might display the immeasurable riches^(N) of His grace through His kindness^(O) to us in Christ Jesus. ⁸ For you are saved by grace^(P) through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— ⁹ not from works, so that no one can boast. ¹⁰ For we are His creation, created^(Q) in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time^(R) so that we should walk in them.

Unity in Christ

¹¹ So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,”^(S) which is done in the flesh by human hands.^{(T) 12} At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise,^(U) without hope^(V) and without God in the world. ¹³ But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood^(W) of the Messiah. ¹⁴ For He is our peace, who made both groups one^(X) and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In His flesh, ¹⁵ He made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that He might create^(Y) in Himself one^(Z) new man from the two, resulting in peace. ¹⁶ He did this so that He might reconcile both to God in one body^(AA) through the cross and put the hostility to death by it.^{[d] 17} When the Messiah came, He proclaimed the good news^(AB) of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.^{(AC) 18} For through Him we both have access^(AD) by one Spirit to the Father.^{(AE) 19} So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, ²⁰ built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,^(AF) with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. ²¹ The whole building, being put together^(AG) by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord.^{(AH) 22} You also are being built together^(AI) for God’s dwelling^(AJ) in the Spirit.

A Prophecy against Edom

35 The word of the Lord came to me: ² “Son of man, turn your face toward Mount Seir^(A) and prophesy against it. ³ Say to it: This is what the Lord God says:

⁵ “Because you maintained an ancient hatred^(C) and handed over the Israelites to the power of the sword in the time of their disaster, the time of final punishment,^{(D) 6} therefore, as I live”—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“I will destine you for bloodshed, and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you.^{(E) 7} I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go.^{(F) 8} I will fill its mountains with the slain;^(G) those slain by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines. ⁹ I will make you a perpetual desolation; your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

¹⁰ “Because you said, ‘These two nations and two lands will be mine, and we will possess them’—though the Lord was there^(H)— ¹¹ therefore, as I live”—the declaration of the Lord God—“I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them. I will make Myself known among them^[a] when I judge you. ¹² Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have heard all the blasphemies you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are desolate. They have been given to us to devour!’ ¹³ You boasted against Me^(I) with your mouth, and spoke many words against Me. I heard it Myself!

¹⁴ “This is what the Lord God says: While the whole world rejoices, I will make you a desolation. ¹⁵ Just as you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it became a desolation, so I will deal with you: you will become a desolation, Mount Seir, and so will all Edom in its entirety. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
