Blessings of Obedience

26 ‘You shall not make for yourselves (A)idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves (B)a carved image or (C)a memorial stone, nor shall you place a (D)figured stone in your land to bow down [a]to it; for I am the Lord your God. (E)You shall keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; I am the Lord. (F)If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out, then (G)I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. (H)Indeed, your threshing season will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. So you will eat your [b]food to the full and (I)live securely in your land. (J)I shall also grant peace in the land, so that (K)you may lie down, with no one to make you afraid. (L)I shall also eliminate harmful animals from the land, and (M)no sword will pass through your land. Instead, you will chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword; (N)five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand; and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. So I will turn toward you and (O)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will (P)confirm My covenant with you. 10 And (Q)you will eat the old supply, and clear out the old because of the new. 11 (R)Moreover, I will make My [c]dwelling among you, and My soul will not [d]reject you. 12 (S)I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. 13 (T)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and (U)I broke your yoke and made you walk erect.

Penalties of Disobedience

14 (V)But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, 15 if, instead, you (W)reject My statutes, and if your soul loathes My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, but rather to (X)break My covenant, 16 I, in turn, will do this to you: I will [e]summon a (Y)sudden terror against you, consumption and fever that will make the eyes fail and the (Z)soul languish; also, (AA)you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it. 17 And I will set My face against you so that you will be defeated before your enemies; and (AB)those who hate you will rule over you, and (AC)you will flee when no one is pursuing you. 18 If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you (AD)seven times more for your sins. 19 I will also (AE)break down your pride of power; and I will make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 (AF)Your strength will be consumed uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit.

21 ‘Yet if you [f](AG)show hostility toward Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you (AH)seven times according to your sins. 22 (AI)I will also let loose among you the animals of the field, which will deprive you of your children and eliminate your cattle, and reduce your number so that (AJ)your roads become deserted.

23 (AK)And if by these things you do not learn your lesson regarding Me, but you show hostility toward Me, 24 then I in turn will (AL)show hostility toward you; and I, even I, will strike you (AM)seven times for your sins. 25 I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute (AN)vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send a (AO)plague among you, so that you will be handed over to the enemy. 26 (AP)When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread [g]in rationed amounts, so that you will (AQ)eat and not be satisfied.

27 ‘Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me, 28 then (AR)I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I for My part will punish you seven times for your sins. 29 Further, (AS)you will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 I then (AT)will destroy your high places, and cut down your (AU)incense altars, and [h]pile your [i]remains on the [j]remains of your idols, for My soul will loathe you. 31 I will turn your cities into (AV)ruins as well and make your (AW)sanctuaries desolate, and I will not (AX)smell your soothing aromas. 32 And I will make (AY)the land desolate (AZ)so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled at it. 33 You, however, I (BA)will scatter among the nations, and I will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become ruins.

34 (BB)Then the land will restore its Sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemies’ land; then the land will rest and restore its Sabbaths. 35 All the days of its desolation it will have the rest which it did not have on your Sabbaths, while you were living on it. 36 As for those among you who are left, I will also bring (BC)despair into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a scattered leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee [k]as though from the sword, and they will fall. 37 (BD)They will then stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand before your enemies. 38 Instead, (BE)you will perish among the nations, and your enemies’ land will consume you. 39 (BF)So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their wrongdoing in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the wrongdoing of their forefathers they will rot away with them.

40 ‘But (BG)if they confess their wrongdoing and the wrongdoing of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me— 41 I also was acting with hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies—(BH)or if their uncircumcised heart is humbled so that (BI)they then make amends for their wrongdoing, 42 then I will remember (BJ)My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also (BK)My covenant with Isaac, and (BL)My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. 43 (BM)For the land will be abandoned by them, and will restore its Sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making amends for their wrongdoing, [l]because they rejected My ordinances and their (BN)soul loathed My statutes. 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so (BO)loathe them as (BP)to destroy them, (BQ)breaking My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God. 45 But I will remember for them the (BR)covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, so that (BS)I might be their God. I am the Lord.’”

46 (BT)These are the statutes and ordinances and laws which the Lord established between Himself and the sons of Israel [m]through Moses on Mount Sinai.

Psalm 33

Praise to the Creator and Protector.

33 (A)Sing for joy in the Lord, you righteous ones;
Praise is (B)becoming to the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (C)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (D)harp of ten strings.
Sing to Him a (E)new song;
Play skillfully with (F)a shout of joy.
For the word of the Lord (G)is right,
And all His work is done (H)in faithfulness.
He (I)loves righteousness and justice;
The (J)earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the (K)word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And (L)by the breath of His mouth (M)all their [a]lights.
He gathers the (N)waters of the sea together [b]as a heap;
He puts the depths in storehouses.
Let (O)all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (P)stand in awe of Him.
For (Q)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it [c]stood firm.
10 The Lord (R)nullifies the plan of nations;
He frustrates the plans of peoples.
11 The (S)plan of the Lord stands forever,
The (T)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the (U)nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has (V)chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The Lord (W)looks from heaven;
He (X)sees all the sons of mankind;
14 From (Y)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (Z)fashions [d]the hearts of them all,
He who (AA)understands all their works.
16 (AB)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not rescued by great strength.
17 A (AC)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

18 Behold, (AD)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who (AE)wait for His faithfulness,
19 To (AF)rescue their soul from death
And to keep them alive (AG)in famine.
20 Our soul (AH)waits for the Lord;
He is our (AI)help and our shield.
21 For our (AJ)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your favor, Lord, be upon us,
Just as we have waited for You.

Ecclesiastes 9

People Are in the Hand of God

For I have taken all this to my heart, even to [a]examine [b]it all, that righteous people, wise people, and their deeds are (A)in the hand of God. (B)People do not know whether it will be (C)love or hatred; anything [c]awaits them.

(D)It is the same for all. There is (E)one fate for the righteous and for the wicked; for the good, for the clean and the unclean; for the person who offers a sacrifice and for the one who does not sacrifice. As the good person is, so is the sinner; the one who swears an oath is just as the one who [d]is afraid to swear an oath. This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun, that there is (F)one fate for everyone. Furthermore, (G)the hearts of the sons of mankind are full of evil, and (H)insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Afterward they go to the dead. For whoever is joined to all the living, there is hope; for better a live dog, than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die; but the dead (I)do not know anything, nor do they have a reward any longer, for their (J)memory is forgotten. Indeed their love, their hate, and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a (K)share in all that is done under the sun.

Go then, (L)eat your bread in happiness, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart; for God has already approved your works. See that your (M)clothes are white all the time, and that there is no lack of (N)oil on your head. [e]Enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your (O)futile life which He has given you under the sun, [f]all the days of your futility; for this is your (P)reward in life and in your work which you have labored under the sun.

Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, (Q)do it with all your might; for there is no (R)activity, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in (S)Sheol where you are going.

11 I again saw under the sun that the (T)race is not to the swift and the (U)battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor (V)wealth to the discerning, nor favor to the skillful; for time and (W)chance overtake them all. 12 For indeed, a person does not (X)know his time: like fish that are caught in a treacherous net and (Y)birds caught in a snare, so the sons of mankind are (Z)ensnared at an evil time when it (AA)suddenly falls on them.

13 This too I saw as wisdom under the sun, and [g]it impressed me: 14 there (AB)was a small city with few men in it, and a great king came to it, surrounded it, and constructed large siegeworks against it. 15 But there was found in it a (AC)poor wise man, and he [h]saved the city (AD)by his wisdom. Yet (AE)no one remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “(AF)Wisdom is better than strength.” But the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are [i]ignored. 17 The (AG)words of the wise heard in calm are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 (AH)Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but (AI)one sinner destroys much good.

Titus 1

Salutation

Paul, (A)a bond-servant of God and an (B)apostle of Jesus Christ, [a]for the faith of those (C)chosen of God and (D)the knowledge of the truth which is (E)according to godliness, in (F)the hope of eternal life, which God, (G)who cannot lie, (H)promised [b](I)long ages ago, but (J)at the proper time revealed His word in (K)the proclamation (L)with which I was entrusted (M)according to the commandment of (N)God our Savior;

To (O)Titus, (P)my true [c]son [d]in a (Q)common faith: (R)Grace and peace from God the Father and (S)Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

For this reason I left you in (T)Crete, that you would set in order what remains and (U)appoint (V)elders in every city as I directed you, namely, (W)if any man is beyond reproach, the (X)husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of (Y)indecent behavior or (Z)rebellion. For the [e](AA)overseer must be beyond reproach as (AB)God’s steward, not (AC)self-willed, not quick-tempered, not (AD)overindulging in wine, not [f]a bully, (AE)not greedy for money, but (AF)hospitable, (AG)loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, (AH)holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to [g]exhort in (AI)sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.

10 (AJ)For there are many (AK)rebellious people, (AL)empty talkers and deceivers, especially (AM)those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting (AN)whole families, teaching (AO)things they should not teach (AP)for the sake of [h]dishonest gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “(AQ)Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason (AR)reprimand them (AS)severely so that they may be (AT)sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish (AU)myths and (AV)commandments of men who (AW)turn away from the truth. 15 (AX)To the pure, all things are pure; but (AY)to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their (AZ)mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 (BA)They profess to know God, but by their deeds they (BB)deny Him, being (BC)detestable and (BD)disobedient and (BE)worthless (BF)for any good deed.
