18 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, ² Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am Jehovah your God. ³ After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes. ⁴ Mine ordinances shall ye do, and my statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am Jehovah your God. ⁵ Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and mine ordinances; which if a man do, he shall live ^[a]in them: I am Jehovah.

⁶ None of you shall approach to any that are near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am Jehovah. ⁷ The nakedness of thy father, even the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. ⁸ The nakedness of thy father’s wife shalt thou not uncover; it is thy father’s nakedness. ⁹ The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or the daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. ¹⁰ The nakedness of thy son’s daughter, or of thy daughter’s daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness. ¹¹ The nakedness of thy father’s wife’s daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. ¹² Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s sister: she is thy father’s near kinswoman. ¹³ Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother’s sister: for she is thy mother’s near kinswoman. ¹⁴ Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt. ¹⁵ Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son’s wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. ¹⁶ Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: it is thy brother’s nakedness. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; thou shalt not take her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are near kinswomen: it is ^[b]wickedness. ¹⁸ And thou shalt not take a wife to her sister, to be a rival to her, to uncover her nakedness, besides the other in her life-time.

¹⁹ And thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is ^[c]impure by her uncleanness. ²⁰ And thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor’s wife, to defile thyself with her. ²¹ And thou shalt not give any of thy seed ^[d]to make them pass through the fire to Molech; neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am Jehovah. ²² Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. ²³ And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

²⁴ Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out from before you; ²⁵ and the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomiteth out her inhabitants. ²⁶ Ye therefore shall keep my statutes and mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the home-born, nor the stranger that sojourneth among you ²⁷ (for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land is defiled); ²⁸ that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. ²⁹ For whosoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. ³⁰ Therefore shall ye keep my charge, that ye practise not any of these abominable customs, which were practised before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am Jehovah your God.

1 The words of ^[a]the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. ² Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity. ³ What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun? ⁴ One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever. ⁵ The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth. ⁶ The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its course, and the wind returneth again to its circuits. ⁷ All the ^[b]rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again. ^8 [c]All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁹ That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. ¹⁰ Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us. ¹¹ There is no remembrance of the former generations; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter generations that are to come, among those that shall come after. ¹² I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. ¹³ And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith. ¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and ^[d]a striving after wind. ¹⁵ That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and ^[e]that which is wanting cannot be numbered. ¹⁶ I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have gotten me great wisdom ^[f]above all that were before me ^[g]in Jerusalem; yea, my heart ^[h]hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. ¹⁷ And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind. ¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

3 ^[a]Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. ² The ^[b]bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach; ^3 [c]no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money; ⁴ one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; ⁵ (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) ⁶ not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the ^[d]condemnation of the devil. ⁷ Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. ⁸ Deacons in like manner must be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; ⁹ holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. ¹⁰ And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless. ¹¹ Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. ¹² Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. ¹³ For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly; ¹⁵ but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know ^[e]how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ^[f]ground of the truth. ¹⁶ And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness;
