2 Kings 11-12

Athaliah Queen of Judah

11 (A)When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she rose and destroyed all the royal [a]offspring. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, (B)took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and placed him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. So he was hidden with her in the house of the Lord six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

(C)Now in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of hundreds of (D)the Carites and of the [b]guard, and brought them to him in the house of the Lord. Then he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord, and showed them the king’s son. He commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: (E)one third of you, who come in on the sabbath and keep watch over the king’s house (one third also shall be at the gate Sur, and one third at the gate behind the [c]guards), [d]shall keep watch over the house for defense. Two parts of you, even all who go out on the sabbath, shall also keep watch over the house of the Lord for the king. Then you shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And (F)be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

So the captains of hundreds (G)did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the sabbath, with those who were to go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 (H)The priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the Lord. 11 The [e]guards stood each with his weapons in his hand, from the right [f]side of the house to the left [g]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king. 12 Then he brought the king’s son out and (I)put the crown on him and gave him (J)the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “(K)Long live the king!”

13 (L)When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people in the house of the Lord. 14 She looked and behold, the king was standing (M)by the pillar, according to the custom, with the captains and the [h]trumpeters beside the king; and (N)all the people of the land rejoiced and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah (O)tore her clothes and cried, “(P)Treason! Treason!” 15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds who were appointed over the army and said to them, “Bring her out [i]between the ranks, and whoever follows her put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of the Lord.” 16 So they [j]seized her, and when she arrived at the horses’ entrance of the king’s house, she was (Q)put to death there.

17 Then (R)Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, that they would be the Lord’s people, also (S)between the king and the people. 18 All the people of the land went to (T)the house of Baal, and tore it down; (U)his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and (V)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed [k]officers over the house of the Lord. 19 He took the captains of hundreds and the (W)Carites and the [l]guards and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of (X)the gate of the [m]guards to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 So (Y)all the people of the land rejoiced and the city was quiet. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword at the king’s house.

21 [n](Z)Jehoash was seven years old when he became king.

Joash (Jehoash) Reigns over Judah

12 In the seventh year of Jehu, (AA)Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. Jehoash did right in the sight of the Lord all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. Only (AB)the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

The Temple to Be Repaired

Then Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the sacred things (AC)which is brought into the house of the Lord, in current money, both (AD)the money of each man’s assessment and all the money [o]which any man’s heart prompts him to bring into the house of the Lord, let the priests take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance; and they shall repair the [p]damages of the house wherever any damage may be found.”

But it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash (AE)the priests had not repaired the damages of the house. Then King Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the other priests and said to them, “Why do you not repair the damages of the house? Now therefore take no more money from your acquaintances, but pay it for the damages of the house.” So the priests agreed that they would take no more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the house.

But (AF)Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid and put it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money which was brought into the house of the Lord. 10 When they saw that there was much money in the chest, (AG)the king’s scribe and the high priest came up and tied it in bags and counted the money which was found in the house of the Lord. 11 They gave the money which was weighed out into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they [q]paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord; 12 and (AH)to the masons and the stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the damages to the house of the Lord, and for all that was [r]laid out for the house to repair it. 13 But (AI)there were not made for the house of the Lord (AJ)silver cups, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver from the money which was brought into the house of the Lord; 14 for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it they repaired the house of the Lord. 15 Moreover, (AK)they did not require an accounting from the men into whose hand they gave the money to pay to those who did the work, for they dealt faithfully. 16 The (AL)money from the guilt offerings and (AM)the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord; (AN)it was for the priests.

17 Then (AO)Hazael king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it, and (AP)Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. 18 (AQ)Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and (AR)his own sacred things and all the gold that was found among the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then he went away from Jerusalem.

Joash (Jehoash) Succeeded by Amaziah in Judah

19 Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 20 (AS)His servants arose and made a conspiracy and (AT)struck down Joash at (AU)the house of Millo as he was going down to Silla. 21 For Jozacar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of (AV)Shomer, his servants, struck him and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and (AW)Amaziah his son became king in his place.

2 Timothy 2

Be Strong

You therefore, my [a](A)son, (B)be strong in the grace that is in (C)Christ Jesus. The things (D)which you have heard from me in the presence of (E)many witnesses, (F)entrust these to (G)faithful men who will be (H)able to teach others also. (I)Suffer hardship with me, as a good (J)soldier of (K)Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service (L)entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Also if anyone (M)competes as an athlete, he [b]does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. (N)The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, (O)risen from the dead, (P)descendant of David, (Q)according to my gospel, [c]for which I (R)suffer hardship even to (S)imprisonment as a (T)criminal; but (U)the word of God (V)is not imprisoned. 10 For this reason (W)I endure all things for (X)the sake of those who are chosen, (Y)so that they also may obtain the (Z)salvation which is in (AA)Christ Jesus and with it (AB)eternal glory. 11 (AC)It is a trustworthy statement:

For (AD)if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, (AE)we will also reign with Him;
If we [d](AF)deny Him, He also will deny us;
13 If we are faithless, (AG)He remains faithful, for (AH)He cannot deny Himself.

An Unashamed Workman

14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly (AI)charge them in the presence of God not to (AJ)wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to (AK)present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling (AL)the word of truth. 16 But (AM)avoid (AN)worldly and empty chatter, for [e]it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their [f]talk will spread like [g]gangrene. Among them are (AO)Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that (AP)the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset (AQ)the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the (AR)firm foundation of God stands, having this (AS)seal, “(AT)The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “(AU)Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”

20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and (AV)some to honor and some to dishonor. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from (AW)these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, (AX)prepared for every good work. 22 Now (AY)flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, (AZ)faith, love and peace, with those who (BA)call on the Lord (BB)from a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant (BC)speculations, knowing that they (BD)produce [h]quarrels. 24 (BE)The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, (BF)able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 (BG)with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, (BH)if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to (BI)the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (BJ)the snare of the devil, having been (BK)held captive [i]by him to do his will.

Hosea 3-4

Hosea’s Second Symbolic Marriage

Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a [a]woman who is loved by her [b]husband, yet an adulteress, even (A)as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin (B)cakes.” So I (C)bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a [c]half of barley. Then I said to her, “You shall (D)stay with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a [d]man; so I will also be toward you.” For the sons of Israel will remain for many days (E)without king or prince, (F)without sacrifice or sacred (G)pillar and without (H)ephod or [e](I)household idols. Afterward the sons of Israel will (J)return and seek the Lord their God and (K)David their king; and (L)they will come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness in the last days.

God’s Controversy with Israel

(M)Listen to the word of the Lord, O sons of Israel,
For the Lord has a (N)case against the inhabitants of the land,
Because there is (O)no [f]faithfulness or [g]kindness
Or (P)knowledge of God in the land.
There is (Q)swearing, (R)deception, (S)murder, (T)stealing and (U)adultery.
They employ violence, so that (V)bloodshed [h]follows bloodshed.
Therefore the land (W)mourns,
And everyone who lives in it languishes
Along with the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky,
And also the fish of the sea [i]disappear.

Yet let no one [j](X)find fault, and let none offer reproof;
For your people are like those who (Y)contend with the priest.
So you will (Z)stumble by day,
And the prophet also will stumble with you by night;
And I will destroy your (AA)mother.
(AB)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have (AC)rejected knowledge,
I also will (AD)reject you from being My priest.
Since you have (AE)forgotten the (AF)law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

The more they (AG)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;
I will (AH)change their glory into shame.
They (AI)feed on the [k]sin of My people
And (AJ)direct their desire toward their iniquity.
And it will be, like people, (AK)like priest;
So I will (AL)punish them for their ways
And repay them for their deeds.
10 (AM)They will eat, but not have enough;
They will (AN)play the harlot, but not increase,
Because they have [l](AO)stopped giving heed to the Lord.

11 Harlotry, (AP)wine and new wine take away the [m]understanding.
12 My people (AQ)consult their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand informs them;
For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
And they have played the harlot, departing [n]from their God.
13 They offer sacrifices on the (AR)tops of the mountains
And [o](AS)burn incense on the hills,
(AT)Under oak, poplar and terebinth,
Because their shade is pleasant.
Therefore your daughters play the harlot
And your [p]brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot
Or your [q]brides when they commit adultery,
For the men themselves go apart with harlots
And offer sacrifices with (AU)temple prostitutes;
So the people without understanding are [r]ruined.

15 Though you, Israel, play the harlot,
Do not let Judah become guilty;
Also do not go to (AV)Gilgal,
Or go up to Beth-aven
(AW)And take the oath:
“As the Lord lives!”
16 Since Israel is (AX)stubborn
Like a stubborn heifer,
[s]Can the Lord now (AY)pasture them
Like a lamb in a large field?
17 Ephraim is joined to (AZ)idols;
(BA)Let him alone.
18 Their liquor gone,
They play the harlot continually;
(BB)Their [t]rulers dearly love shame.
19 (BC)The wind wraps them in its wings,
And they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Psalm 119:121-144

Ayin.

121 I have (A)done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be (B)surety for Your servant for good;
Do not let the arrogant (C)oppress me.
123 My (D)eyes fail with longing for Your salvation
And for Your righteous [a]word.
124 Deal with Your servant (E)according to Your lovingkindness
And (F)teach me Your statutes.
125 (G)I am Your servant; (H)give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for the Lord to (I)act,
For they have broken Your law.
127 Therefore I (J)love Your commandments
Above gold, yes, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I esteem right all Your (K)precepts concerning everything,
I (L)hate every false way.

Pe.

129 Your testimonies are (M)wonderful;
Therefore my soul (N)observes them.
130 The (O)unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives (P)understanding to the simple.
131 I (Q)opened my mouth wide and (R)panted,
For I (S)longed for Your commandments.
132 (T)Turn to me and be gracious to me,
After Your manner [b]with those who love Your name.
133 Establish my (U)footsteps in Your [c]word,
And do not let any iniquity (V)have dominion over me.
134 (W)Redeem me from the oppression of man,
That I may keep Your precepts.
135 (X)Make Your face shine upon Your servant,
And (Y)teach me Your statutes.
136 My eyes [d]shed (Z)streams of water,
Because they (AA)do not keep Your law.

Tsadhe.

137 (AB)Righteous are You, O Lord,
And upright are Your judgments.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in (AC)righteousness
And exceeding (AD)faithfulness.
139 My (AE)zeal has [e]consumed me,
Because my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
140 Your [f](AF)word is very [g]pure,
Therefore Your servant (AG)loves it.
141 I am small and (AH)despised,
Yet I do not (AI)forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And (AJ)Your law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [h]come upon me,
Yet Your commandments are my (AK)delight.
144 Your (AL)testimonies are righteous forever;
(AM)Give me understanding that I may live.
