2 Kings 19

Jerusalem Will Be Saved(A)

19 When King Hezekiah heard the message, he tore his clothes [C a sign of mourning or distress] and put on ·rough cloth [sackcloth; burlap; C also a sign of mourning]. Then he went into the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. Hezekiah sent Eliakim, the ·palace [L king’s house] manager, and Shebna, the royal secretary, and the ·older [or elders of the] priests to Isaiah. They were all wearing ·rough cloth [sackcloth; burlap] when they came to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. They told Isaiah, “This is what Hezekiah says: Today is a day of ·sorrow [distress; trouble] and ·punishment [insults, rebuke] and ·disgrace [rejection], as when a child ·should [is ready to] be born, but the mother is not strong enough to give birth to it. The king of Assyria sent his field commander to ·make fun of [defy; ridicule; insult] the living God. Maybe the Lord your God will hear what the commander said and will ·punish [rebuke] him for it. So pray for the ·few of us who are left alive [remnant that is left].”

When Hezekiah’s ·officers [officials] came to Isaiah, he said to them, “Tell your ·master [lord] this: ·The Lord says [T Thus says the Lord], ‘Don’t be afraid of what you have heard. Don’t be frightened by the words the servants of the king of Assyria have ·spoken [used to blaspheme] against me. Listen! I am going to put a spirit in the king of Assyria. He will hear a ·report [rumor; message] that will make him return to his own country, and I will cause him to ·die [L fall] by the sword there.’”

The field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish. When he went back, he found the king fighting against the city of Libnah.

The king received a report that Tirhakah, the Cushite king of ·Egypt [L Cush; C present-day Ethiopia], was coming to attack him. When the king of Assyria heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Tell Hezekiah king of Judah: Don’t be ·fooled [deceived; deluded] by the god you trust. Don’t believe him when he says Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria. 11 You ·have heard [know] what the kings of Assyria have done. They have completely defeated every country, so do ·not [L you…?] think you will be ·saved [rescued; T delivered]. 12 Did the gods of those ·people [nations] ·save [rescue; T deliver] them? My ·ancestors [fathers] destroyed them, defeating the cities of Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and the people of Eden living in Tel Assar. 13 Where are the kings of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the kings of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?”

Hezekiah Prays to the Lord

14 ·When [After] Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. He spread the letter out before the Lord 15 and prayed ·to [before] the Lord: “Lord, God of Israel, whose throne is ·between [above] the ·gold creatures with wings [L cherubim; Ex. 37:7], ·only you [you alone] are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth. 16 ·Hear [L Extend/Incline your ear], Lord, and listen. Open your eyes, Lord, and see. Listen to the words Sennacherib has said to ·insult [defy; ridicule; mock] the living God. 17 It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have ·destroyed [devastated; laid waste to] these ·countries [nations] and their lands. 18 They have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire, ·but [for] they were not gods at all but only wood and rock statues that people made. So the kings have destroyed them. 19 Now, Lord our God, ·save [rescue; T deliver] us from the king’s ·power [L hand] so that all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you, Lord, ·are the only [alone are] God.”

God Answers Hezekiah

20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah that said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria. 21 This is ·what [L the word] the Lord has said against Sennacherib:

‘The ·people of Jerusalem [L virgin daughter of Zion]
    ·hate you [despises] and ·make fun of [mocks; scorns] you.
The ·people [L daughter] of Jerusalem
    ·laugh at you [L tosses her head] ·as you run away [as you flee; or behind your back].
22 ·You have insulted me and spoken against me [Whom have you defied/ridiculed/mocked?];
    ·you have raised your voice against me [Against whom have you raised your voice…].
·You have a proud look on your face [and arrogantly lifted your eyes/gaze?]!
    Against the Holy One of Israel!
23 You have sent your messengers to ·insult [defy; ridicule; mock] the Lord.
    You have said, “With my many chariots
I have gone to the tops of the mountains,
    to the ·highest [or remotest] mountains of Lebanon.
I have cut down its tallest cedars
    and its best ·pine [cypress] trees.
I have gone to its farthest places
    and to its ·best [densest] forests.
24 I have dug wells in foreign ·countries [lands]
    and drunk water there.
By the soles of my feet,
    I have ·dried [stopped] up all the rivers of Egypt.”

25 “‘King of Assyria, ·surely you have [L have you not…?] heard.
    Long ago I, the Lord, ·planned [determined; ordained] these things.
·Long ago [In ancient times/days of old] I ·designed them [planned it],
    and now I have ·made them happen [brought them to pass].
I allowed you to turn those ·strong, walled [fortified] cities
    into piles of ·rocks [rubble; ruins].
26 The people in those cities were ·weak [powerless; drained of strength];
    they were ·frightened [dismayed] and ·put to shame [confused; confounded].
They were like grass in the field,
    like tender, young ·grass [shoots],
like grass on the housetop
    that is ·burned [scorched] by the wind before it can grow.

27 “‘I know ·when you rest [when you stand or sit; or where you are],
    when you come and go,
    and how you ·rage [rave] against me.
28 Because you ·rage [rave] against me,
    and because I have heard your ·proud [arrogant] words,
I will put my hook in your nose
    and my bit in your mouth.
Then I will ·force you to leave my country [turn you back; make you retreat]
    the ·same way [road] you came.’

29 “Then the Lord said, ‘Hezekiah, I will give you this sign:

This year you will eat the grain that grows ·wild [L of itself],
    and the second year you will eat what ·grows [springs] from that.
But in the third year, ·plant grain [sow] and ·harvest it [reap].
    Plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30 ·Some of the people in [A remnant of] the ·family [L house] of Judah
    will ·escape [survive].
·Like plants that take root [They will put down roots below],
    ·they will grow strong and have many children [and will bear fruit above].
31 A ·few people will come out of Jerusalem alive [remnant will spread out from Jerusalem];
    ·a few from Mount Zion will live [and survivors out from Mount Zion].
The ·strong love [zeal] of the Lord All-Powerful
    will ·make this happen [accomplish this].’

32 “So this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:

‘He will not enter this city
    or even shoot an arrow here.
He will not fight against it with shields
    or build a ramp to ·attack the city walls [lay siege to it].
33 He will ·return to his country [retreat] the same ·way [road] he came,
    and he will not enter this city,’
    says the Lord.
34 ‘I will defend and ·save [rescue; T deliver] this city
    for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.’”

The Angel of Death(B)

35 That night the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord went out and killed one hundred eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up early the next morning, they saw all the dead bodies. 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria left and went back to Nineveh and stayed there.

37 One day as Sennacherib was worshiping in the ·temple [L house] of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with a sword. Then they escaped to the land of Ararat. So Sennacherib’s son Esarhaddon became king of Assyria.

Hebrews 1

God Spoke Through His Son

·In the past [Long ago] God spoke to our ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] through the prophets ·many times [or in a fragmentary/partial way; L in many parts] and in many different ways. But now in these last days God has spoken to us through ·his Son [or a son; 1:3]. God has ·chosen [appointed] his Son to ·own [be heir/inheritor of] all things, and through him he made the ·world [universe; ages; C comprising both space and time; John 1:3]. The Son ·reflects [or radiates; shines forth] the glory of God [John 1:14] and ·shows exactly what God is like [L is the exact representation/imprint/stamp of his being/essence/nature]. He ·holds everything together [sustains/upholds all things] with his powerful word. When the Son ·made people clean from their [L provided purification/cleansing for] sins [9:14], he sat down at the right ·side [L hand; C the most honored position beside a king; Ps. 110:1] of ·God, the Great One in heaven [L the Majesty/Preeminence in the highest places; C a Jewish way to avoid saying the divine name of God]. The Son became much ·greater [superior; better] than the angels, ·and [or just as; in the same way that] ·God gave him [L he inherited] a name [C either “Son” (v. 5), or referring to his nature or reputation] that is ·much greater than [far superior to] theirs.

This is because God never said to any of the angels,

“You are my Son.
    Today I have ·become your Father [T begotten you; Ps. 2:7; see Heb. 5:5; Acts 13:33].”

·Nor did God say of any angel [L And again],

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son [2 Sam. 7:14].”

And [L again] when God brings ·his firstborn Son [L the firstborn; Rom. 8:29] into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him [Ps. 97:7 (in the Greek version of the OT); C similar words are found in the Greek version of Deut. 32:43 and in a Hebrew copy among the Dead Sea Scrolls].”

This is what God said about the angels:

“·God makes his angels become like winds [or God makes winds into his messengers].
    He makes ·his servants become like flames of fire [or flames of fire to be his servants; Ps. 104:4].”

But God said this about his Son:

“·God, your throne [L Your throne, O God; ] will last forever and ever.
    You will rule your kingdom with ·fairness [L a just/righteous scepter; C a scepter symbolizes royal authority].
You love ·right [righteousness] and hate ·evil [wickedness; lawlessness],
    so ·God [L God, your God,] has ·chosen [L anointed] you ·from among your friends [or above your peers; above anyone else];
    he has ·set you apart with much joy [L anointed you with the oil of joy/rejoicing; Ps. 45:6–7].”

10 God also says,

“Lord, in the beginning you ·made [L laid the foundations of] the earth,
    and your hands made the ·skies [heavens].
11 They will be destroyed, but you ·will remain [continue; C forever].
    They will all wear out like ·clothes [a garment].
12 You will ·fold them [roll them up] like a ·coat [robe].
    And, like ·clothes [a garment], you will change them.
But you ·never change [are the same; 13:8],
    and your ·life [L years] will never ·end [fail; run out; Ps. 102:25–27].”

13 And God never said this to an angel:

“Sit by me at my right ·side [hand; v. 3]
    until I put your enemies ·under your control [L as a footstool under your feet; Ps. 110:1].”

14 ·All the angels are [L Are they not…?] ·spirits who serve God [or ministering spirits] and are sent to ·help [serve] those who will ·receive [L inherit] salvation.

Hosea 12

12 ·What Israel does is as useless as chasing [L Ephraim feeds on] the wind;
    he chases the east wind all day [Eccl. 1:14, 17; 2:11, 17, 26].
They ·tell more and more lies
    and do more and more violence [multiply lies and violence].
They make ·agreements [a covenant/treaty] with Assyria,
    and they send ·a gift of olive oil [L oil] to Egypt [C as tribute or to gain support].
The Lord also has ·some things [a case/lawsuit; or a dispute; 4:1] against Judah.
    He will punish ·Israel [L Jacob] for what they have done;
    he will ·give [repay] them ·what they deserve [according to their deeds].
·Their ancestor Jacob [L He] ·held on to his brother’s heel [or struggled with/supplanted his brother]
    ·while the two of them were being born [L in the womb; Gen. 25:19–26].
·When he grew to be a man [L In his strength/manhood],
    he ·wrestled [struggled] with God.
When Jacob ·wrestled [struggled] with the angel and ·won [prevailed],
    he ·cried [wept] and ·asked for his blessing [pleaded for/sought his favor; Gen. 32:22–32].
Later, ·God met with him [he found him] at Bethel
    and spoke with him there [Gen. 35:1].
It was the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts];
    the Lord is his ·great [memorial; memorable] name.
You must return to your God;
    ·love him, do what is just [or act with love and justice],
    and always ·trust in him as [wait for] your God.
The merchants use dishonest scales;
    they like to ·cheat people [oppress].
·Israel [L Ephraim; 4:17] said, “I am rich! I ·am someone with power [have made my fortune]!”
    ·All their money will do them no good
because of the sins they have done [or “With all the wealth I’ve gained, no one can accuse me of sin”; C either self-vindication (continuing the quotation), or the prophet’s pronouncement of guilt].

“But I am the Lord your God,
    ·who brought you [or ever since you came] out of Egypt.
I will make you live in tents again
    as you used to do on ·worship days [the appointed festivals; C the feast of tabernacles, which commemorated the wilderness wanderings].
10 I spoke to the prophets
    and gave them many visions;
through them, I ·taught my lessons [spoke in parables; or spoke oracles of doom] to you.”

11 ·The people of Gilead are evil [or Is Gilead wicked? or In Gilead there was idolatry],
    they ·are worth nothing [are worthless; or will come to nothing].
·People [or Do they…?] sacrifice bulls at Gilgal [4:15].
    But their altars will become like piles of stone
    in a plowed field.
12 ·Your ancestor Jacob [L Jacob] fled to ·northwest Mesopotamia [L Aram; Gen. 28:5]
    where he ·worked [served; C his uncle Laban] to get a wife [C Rachel (and Leah); Gen. 29:20, 28];
    he tended sheep to pay for her.
13 Later the Lord used a prophet [C Moses; Deut. 18:15]
    to bring ·Jacob’s descendants [L Israel] out of Egypt;
he used a prophet
    to ·take care of [tend; preserve; guard] the Israelites.
14 But ·the Israelites [L Ephraim; 4:17] ·made the Lord angry [bitterly provoked the Lord];
    So the Lord ·will make them pay for the blood they have shed [L leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed]
    and for the ·disgraceful things they have done [or contempt they have shown].

Psalm 135-136

The Lord Saves, Idols Do Not

135 Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord;
    praise him, you servants of the Lord,
you who stand in the Lord’s ·Temple [L house]
    and in the ·Temple courtyards [L courtyards of the house of our God].
Praise the Lord, because the Lord is good;
    ·sing praises [make a psalm] to him, because it is pleasant.

The Lord has chosen the people of Jacob for himself;
    he has chosen the people of Israel ·for his very own [as his special possession/treasure; Ex. 19:5–6; Deut. 7:6; 14:2; Mal. 3:17].
I know that the Lord is great.
    Our Lord is greater than all the gods.
The Lord does what he pleases,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and the deep oceans.
He brings the clouds from the ends of the earth.
    He ·sends [L makes] the lightning with the rain.
He brings out the wind from his storehouses [Job 38:22–23].

He ·destroyed [L struck] the firstborn sons in Egypt
    the firstborn of both people and animals [Ex. 12].
He ·did [L sent] many signs and ·miracles [wonders] in Egypt
    against ·the king [L Pharaoh] and all his servants [L the plagues; Ex. 7–12].
10 He ·defeated [L struck] many nations
    and killed ·powerful [strong] kings:
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
    Og king of Bashan [Num. 21:21–35],
    and all the kings of Canaan [Num. 21:1–3; Josh. 1–12].
12 Then he gave their land as a ·gift [L inheritance],
    a ·gift [L inheritance] to his people, the Israelites [Josh. 13–24].

13 Lord, your name is everlasting;
    Lord, you will be remembered forever.
14 The Lord ·defends [vindicates] his people
    and ·has mercy on [shows grace to] his servants.

15 The idols of other nations are made of silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but they cannot speak.
    They have eyes, but they cannot see.
17 They have ears, but they cannot hear.
    They have no breath in their mouths.
18 People who make idols will be like them,
    and so will those who ·trust [have confidence in] them [115:4–8; Is. 44:9–20; 46:6–7; Jer. 10:1–9; Hab. 2:18–19].

19 ·Family [L House] of Israel, ·praise [bless] the Lord.
    ·Family [L House] of Aaron [C the priests], ·praise [bless] the Lord.
20 ·Family [L House] of Levi [C assistants to the priests], ·praise [bless] the Lord.
    You who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] should ·praise [bless] him.
21 You ·people of [L who live in] Jerusalem, ·praise [bless] the Lord on Mount Zion [C the location of the Temple].
    Praise the Lord!

    His ·love [loyalty] continues forever.
17 He ·defeated [L struck] great kings.
    His ·love [loyalty] continues forever.
18 He killed ·powerful [mighty] kings.

26 ·Give thanks to [Praise] the God of heaven.
His ·love [loyalty] continues forever.
