Leviticus 17

The people must not eat blood

17 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell this to Aaron and his sons and all the people. The Lord has given all these rules. If a person sacrifices a bull, a sheep or a goat in the fields, that is a sin. Or if a person sacrifices it in the camp, that is a sin. The animal is an offering to the Lord. The person should bring it to the door of the tabernacle. He should offer it to the Lord there. The person who offers a sacrifice anywhere else has sinned. He has sacrificed an animal in the wrong way. He must leave the camp. This rule will stop the people giving sacrifices to the Lord in the fields. They must bring their gifts to the priest. They will be friendship offerings to the Lord. The priest will be at the door of the Tent of Meeting. He must shake the blood of the animal on the Lord's altar. That altar is at the door of the Tent of Meeting. The priest must burn the fat. The smell of it while it is burning will give the Lord pleasure. The people give sacrifices in the fields to worship idols that seem like goats. They must never do this again. This rule is for now and for all time.

If an Israelite gives a sacrifice or a burnt offering he must offer it at the Tent of Meeting's door. A foreigner may live among you. If he gives a sacrifice he must offer it at the Tent of Meeting's door. If they did not offer it to the Lord at the Tent of Meeting's door, they are sinning. You must send them away from the camp.

10 An Israelite or a foreigner who lives among you must not eat blood. And they must not drink it. If somebody does, God will turn away from him. He will take that person away from his people. 11 The blood of an animal gives it life. You must put the blood on the altar. God has given the blood to you to atone for your sins. It makes your life right again, because of the blood. 12 For this reason, Israel's people must not eat blood. And the people who are travelling with them must not eat blood.[a]

13 A person may catch an animal or a bird that is clean to eat. If he does, he must pour its blood on the ground. He must cover the blood with some earth. 14 The animal's life is in its blood. That is why no Israelite should eat any animal's blood. You must send any person that eats blood away from your people.

15 An Israelite or a foreign person may find a dead animal. If he eats it, he must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. Then he will become clean. A person might find an animal or a bird that a wild animal has killed. He must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. 16 If that person does not wash his clothes and his body, it is his own mistake.’[b]

Psalm 20-21

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We trust God to help us[a]

20 May the Lord answer you
when you are in trouble and you call to him for help.
May Israel's great God keep you safe.
He will send help to you from his holy place,
    from his temple in Zion.
He will remember the gifts that you have offered to him.
He will accept your burnt offerings
Selah
May God give to you
all the things that you really want.
He will help you to do everything that you want to do.
Then we will be happy and we will shout aloud
when you win against your enemies.
We will wave our flags to praise our God.
Yes, I pray that the Lord will do for you
everything that you ask him to do.

Now I know that the Lord will save
the king that he has chosen.
God will agree to help him from his holy place in heaven.
God will use his great power to make his king safe.
Some people hope that their chariots will keep them safe.
Other people trust their horses to save them.
But we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Those people will fall down,
and they will not get up again.
But we will get up and stand again,
    and we will be strong.
Lord, help the king to win against his enemies!
Please answer us when we ask you for help.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We thank God for his help[b]

21 Lord, the king is happy,
because you help him with your great strength.
You have helped him to win against his enemies,
    so he is very happy.[c]
You have given to him all the things
    that he really wanted.
When he asked for them,
you have not refused to give them to him.
Selah.
You came to him,
and you blessed him with many good things:
You put a crown on his head.
It was made from the best gold.
He asked you to keep his life safe,
and you gave to him a long life.
His descendants will continue for ever.
People praise him,
because you have helped him to win against his enemies.
You have caused him to rule as a great king.
You will continue to bless him for ever.
Because you are very near to him,
    he is very happy.
The king trusts in the Lord.
Because of the Most High God's faithful love,
    the king will never fail.

You will use your strong power
to take hold of your enemies.[d]
You will catch everybody that hates you.
When you come out to fight against them,
you will destroy them like a hot fire.
The Lord destroys them,
because you are angry with them.
10 You will remove your enemies' children from the earth.
They will no longer have any descendants.
11 They decided to hurt you.
They thought how they would do that.
But they could not do anything bad against you.
12 No! You shoot your arrows at them,
so that they turn round and they run away!

13 Get up, Lord, and show your strength!
We will sing to praise you
    because you have great power.

Proverbs 31

Good advice to a king

31 These are the words that King Lemuel's mother said to him. It is an important message:[a]

Be careful, my dear son. God answered my prayers when I gave birth to you. Please listen carefully!

Do not chase after women and lose your strength. Women like that have destroyed kings.

Listen, Lemuel. Kings should not drink lots of wine. They should not want strong drink. When kings drink alcohol, they forget to obey the law. They take away justice for helpless people.

Give strong drink to people who are dying. Give wine to people who are very upset. Then they can forget how poor they are, or how sad they are.

Speak on behalf of people who cannot speak for themselves. Help helpless people to receive justice. Speak clearly to help them. Judge people in a way that is fair and right. Help poor and helpless people to receive justice.

A poem about a good wife[b]

10 How difficult it is to find a wife who is truly wise! She is worth much more than valuable jewels.
11 Her husband trusts her to help him. He will have everything that he needs.
12 She does good things for him every day of her life. She never tries to hurt him.
13 She is happy to work with her own hands to make clothes with wool and linen.
14 She brings special food from far away, like a ship that travels across the sea.
15 She gets up while it is still night and she prepares food for her family. She also gives some to her female servants.
16 She looks carefully at a field, and she decides to buy it. She uses her own money to plant a vineyard.
17 She is strong and she always works hard.
18 She knows how to make money as she buys and sells things. Even at night, she is still working.
19 She knows how to make cloth.
20 She gives money to poor and helpless people.
21 All her family have warm clothes to wear. She is not afraid when cold weather comes.
22 She makes beautiful cloths to cover the beds. Her own clothes are made with valuable linen and purple cloth.
23 People in the city respect her husband. He meets with the other leaders at the city's gate.
24 She uses linen to make clothes and she sells them. She makes belts to sell to the traders.
25 She shows her strength and people respect her. She is not afraid of what will happen in the future.
26 When she speaks, she says wise words. She is kind as she teaches people what is right.
27 She always works hard and she takes care of her family.
28 Her children all agree to thank her. Her husband also praises her.
29 He says, ‘Many women are wise and they work well, but you are better than all of them.’
30 A woman may seem to be beautiful, but that can deceive people. Her body will not be beautiful for ever.
But a woman who respects the Lord with fear will receive honour.
31 Praise her for everything that she has done.
Everyone in the city should know about her, and they should praise her as she deserves.

1 Timothy 2

Christians should pray for all people

So then, this is what I want to ask you first. Please pray for all people. Ask God to supply what they need. Ask God to help them. Thank God for what he does for everyone. Pray in that way for kings and for all rulers and people who have authority. Pray for God to help them, so that we may live our lives without trouble or danger. Then we can live in a good way that respects God and other people. It is good that we should pray like that. It makes God, our Saviour, happy. He wants to save all people. He wants everyone to know his message about what is true.

There is only one God. There is also only one person who brings God and people together. That person is Christ Jesus, who became a man himself. He died as a sacrifice on behalf of all people, to pay the debt of their sins. He died at the proper time for God to show his purpose clearly. God chose me as his apostle, to tell this same message to people. I am telling you what is true. I am not telling lies! Yes, he sent me to teach his true message to the Gentiles, so that they would believe in him.

So then, in every place where you meet together, I want the men to pray. The men who lift up their hands and pray must be those who live good lives. They must not be people who are angry or who quarrel with others.

Christian women should also live in a good way

I also want the women to dress themselves properly in a way that is right. They should not bring shame on themselves. What makes a woman beautiful? It is not the special way that she prepares her hair. It is not the gold things or jewels that she wears. It is not her expensive clothes. 10 Christian women should not dress themselves like that. Instead, their lives should show that they do good things. They say that they want to please God, so that is the proper way for them to live.

11 When you meet together, a woman should learn quietly. She must respect the leaders who teach in the church. 12 I do not let a woman teach men. I do not let a woman have authority over men. Instead, she should listen quietly. 13 I say this because God made Adam first.[a] Then he made Eve. 14 It was Eve, not Adam, who believed the lies that Satan told her. Because she believed Satan completely, she did what God had said was wrong.[b]

15 But even as women give birth to children, God will save them. They must continue to trust God and to love other people. They must live in a way that shows they belong to God. They must think carefully about how they live. Then God will save them.
