2 Kings 1

Elijah and King Ahaziah of Israel

After Ahab died, Moab rebelled against Israel. During the rebellion King Ahaziah fell through a window lattice in his upstairs room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers to Ekron. He had told them, “Go ask Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, if I will recover from this injury.”

Then the angel of Yahweh said to Elijah from Tishbe, “Meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and ask them, ‘Do you seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, because you think there is no Elohim in Israel? This is what Yahweh says: You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.’” Then Elijah left.

When the messengers returned, the king asked them, “Why have you come back so soon?”

They told him that a man came to meet them and said to them, “Go back to the king who sent you. Tell him, ‘This is what Yahweh says: Do you send messengers to seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, because you think there is no Elohim in Israel? You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.’”

The king asked them, “What was the man who told you this like?”

They replied, “He was hairy and had a leather belt around his waist.”

“That’s Elijah from Tishbe,” the king answered.

The king sent an army officer with 50 men to Elijah. When the officer found Elijah sitting on top of a hill, he told Elijah, “Man of Elohim, the king says, ‘Come down.’”

10 Elijah answered the officer, “If I’m a man of Elohim, fire will come from heaven and burn up you and your 50 men.” Then fire came from heaven and burned up the officer and his 50 men.

11 The king sent another officer with 50 men to Elijah. The officer said, “Man of Elohim, this is what the king says: Come here right away!”

12 Elijah answered the officer, “If I’m a man of Elohim, fire will come from heaven and burn up you and your 50 men.” Then Elohim’s fire came from heaven and burned up the officer and his 50 men.

13 The king sent a third officer with 50 men. The officer of the third group went up the hill and knelt in front of Elijah. The officer begged him, “Man of Elohim, please treat my life and the lives of these 50 servants of yours as something precious. 14 Fire has come from heaven and burned up the first two officers and their 100 men. But treat my life as something precious.”

15 The angel of Yahweh told Elijah, “Go with him. Don’t be afraid of him.” So Elijah got up and went with him to the king. 16 Elijah told the king, “This is what Yahweh says: You sent messengers to seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron. Is this because you think there is no Elohim in Israel whose word you can seek? You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.”

17 So Ahaziah died as Yahweh had predicted through Elijah. Joram succeeded him as king because Ahaziah had no son.[a] 18 Isn’t everything else about Ahaziah—the things he did—written in the official records of the kings of Israel?

2 Thessalonians 1

Greeting

From Paul, Silas, and Timothy.

To the church at Thessalonica united with God our Father and the Lord Yeshua Christ.

Good will[a] and peace from God our Father and the Lord Yeshua Christ are yours!

Paul’s Prayer for the Thessalonians

We always have to thank God for you, brothers and sisters. It’s right to do this because your faith is showing remarkable growth and your love for each other is increasing. That’s why we brag in God’s churches about your endurance and faith in all the persecutions and suffering you are experiencing. Your suffering proves that God’s judgment is right and that you are considered worthy of his kingdom.

Certainly, it is right for God to give suffering to those who cause you to suffer. It is also right for God to give all of us relief from our suffering. He will do this when the Lord Yeshua is revealed, coming from heaven with his mighty angels in a blazing fire. He will take revenge on those who refuse to acknowledge God and on those who refuse to respond to the Good News about our Lord Yeshua. They will pay the penalty by being destroyed forever, by being separated from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious power. 10 This will happen on that day when he comes to be honored among all his holy people and admired by all who have believed in him. This includes you because you believed the testimony we gave you.

11 With this in mind, we always pray that our God will make you worthy of his call. We also pray that through his power he will help you accomplish every good desire and help you do everything your faith produces. 12 That way the name of our Lord Yeshua will be honored among you. Then, because of the good will of Yeshua Christ, our God and Lord, you will be honored by him.

Daniel 5

The Handwriting on the Wall

King Belshazzar threw a large banquet for 1,000 nobles and drank wine with them. As they were tasting the wine, Belshazzar ordered that the gold and silver utensils which his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem be brought to him. He wanted to drink from them with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.[a]

So the servants brought the gold utensils that had been taken from Elah’s temple in Jerusalem. The king, his nobles, wives, and concubines drank from them. They drank the wine and praised their gods made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, or stone.

Suddenly, the fingers of a person’s hand appeared and wrote on the plaster wall opposite the lamp stand of the royal palace. The king watched as the hand wrote. Then the king turned pale, and his thoughts frightened him. His hip joints became loose, and his knees knocked against each other.

The king screamed for the psychics, astrologers, and fortunetellers to be brought to him. He told these wise advisers of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me its meaning will be dressed in purple, wear a gold chain on his neck, and become the third-highest ruler in the kingdom.” All the king’s wise advisers came, but they couldn’t read the writing or tell the king its meaning. King Belshazzar was terrified, and his face turned pale. His nobles didn’t know what to do.

10 The discussion between the king and his nobles brought the queen herself into the banquet hall. The queen said, “Your Majesty, may you live forever! Don’t let your thoughts frighten you, and don’t turn pale. 11 There’s a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your grandfather, he was found to have insight, good judgment, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods. Your grandfather, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him head of the magicians, psychics, astrologers, and fortunetellers. 12 This Daniel (who had been renamed Belteshazzar) was found to have knowledge, judgment, and an extraordinary spirit. He has the ability to interpret dreams, solve riddles, and untangle problems. Now, call Daniel, and he will tell you what it means.”

13 So Daniel was taken to the king. The king asked him, “Are you Daniel, one of the captives that my grandfather brought from Judah? 14 I’ve heard that you have the spirit of the gods and that you have insight, good judgment, and extraordinary wisdom. 15 The wise advisers and the psychics were brought to me to read this writing and tell me its meaning. But they couldn’t tell me its meaning. 16 I have heard that you can interpret such things and untangle problems. If you can read the writing and tell me its meaning, you will be dressed in purple, wear a gold chain on your neck, and become the third-highest ruler in the kingdom.”

17 Daniel told the king, “Keep your gifts. Give your gifts and awards to someone else. I’ll still read the writing for you and tell you its meaning.

18 “Your Majesty, the Elah Illa-ah gave your grandfather Nebuchadnezzar a kingdom, might, honor, and glory. 19 People from every province, nation, and language trembled and were terrified by him, because God gave him power. Nebuchadnezzar killed whomever he wanted to kill, and he kept alive whomever he wanted to keep alive. He promoted whomever he wanted to promote, and he demoted whomever he wanted to demote. 20 But when he became so arrogant and conceited that he became overconfident, he was removed from the royal throne. His honor was taken away from him. 21 He was chased away from people, and his mind was changed into an animal’s mind. He lived with wild donkeys, ate grass like cattle, and his body became wet with dew from the sky. This happened until he realized that the Elah Illa-ah has power over human kingdoms. God puts whomever he wishes in charge of them.

22 “Belshazzar, you are one of Nebuchadnezzar’s successors. You didn’t remain humble, even though you knew all this. 23 But you made yourself greater than the Lord of heaven. You had the utensils from his temple brought to you. You, your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them. You praised your gods made of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, or stone. These gods can’t see, hear, or know anything. You didn’t honor Elah, who has power over your life and everything you do. 24 So he sent the hand to write this inscription. 25 This is what has been written: Numbered, Numbered, Weighed, and Divided. 26 This is its meaning: Numbered—Elah has numbered the days of your kingdom and will bring it to an end. 27 Weighed—you have been weighed on a scale and found to be too light. 28 Divided—your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”[b]

29 Then Belshazzar ordered that Daniel be dressed in purple and wear a gold chain on his neck. He made Daniel the third-highest ruler in the kingdom. 30 That night King Belshazzar of Babylon was killed.[c] 31 Darius the Mede took over the kingdom. He was 62 years old.

Psalm 110-111

Psalm 110

A psalm by David.

Yahweh said to my Lord,
“Sit in the highest position in heaven
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

Yahweh will extend your powerful scepter from Zion.
Rule your enemies who surround you.

Your people will volunteer when you call up your army.
Your young people will come to you in holy splendor
like dew in the early morning.[a]

Yahweh has taken an oath and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”

Adonay is at your right side.
He will crush kings on the day of his anger.
He will pass judgment on the nations
and fill them with dead bodies.
Throughout the earth he will crush their heads.
He will drink from the brook along the road.
He will hold his head high.

Psalm 111[b]

Hallelujah!

I will give thanks to Yahweh with all my heart
in the company of decent people and in the congregation.
Yahweh’s deeds are spectacular.
They should be studied by all who enjoy them.
His work is glorious and majestic.
    His righteousness continues forever.
He has made his miracles unforgettable.
    Yahweh is merciful and compassionate.
He provides food for those who fear him.
    He always remembers his promise.[c]
He has revealed the power of his works to his people
by giving them the lands of other nations as an inheritance.
His works are done with truth and justice.
All his guiding principles are trustworthy.
        They last forever and ever.
They are carried out with truth and decency.
He has sent salvation to his people.
He has ordered that his promise should continue forever.
His name is holy and terrifying.
10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom.
Good sense is shown by everyone who follows God’s guiding principles.
    His praise continues forever.
