Leviticus 6

For Sins against the Lord’s People

[a]Yahweh spoke to Moses, “If any of you sin against Yahweh by failing to do your duty, if you lie to your neighbor about something you were supposed to take care of or if you lie about something stolen or seized from your neighbor, you are sinning and will be guilty. If you find something that someone lost and lie about it under oath, or commit any other sin like this, you are sinning and will be guilty. Return what you stole or seized, what you were supposed to take care of, the lost item you found, or whatever it was that you swore falsely about. Pay it back in full plus one-fifth more. Give it back to its owner on the day you bring your guilt offering. Then bring Yahweh your guilt offering, a ram that has no defects or its value in money. Bring it to the priest. So the priest will make peace with the Lord. Then you will be forgiven for whatever you did that made you guilty.”

Instructions for Taking Care of the Fire

Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Command Aaron and his sons: These are the instructions for the burnt offering that stays on the altar overnight while the altar fire is kept burning.

10 “The priest must put on his linen clothes, including his linen undergarments. Then he will remove the ashes left on the altar from the fire that consumed the burnt offering and will put them next to the altar. 11 Then he will take off these clothes and put on some others. He will take the ashes to a clean place outside the camp. 12 The fire must always be burning on the altar. It must never go out. The priest will burn wood on it every morning. He will lay the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offering. 13 The fire must always be burning on the altar. It must never go out.

The Grain Offering from the People

14 “These are the instructions for the grain offering. Aaron’s sons must bring it into Yahweh’s presence in front of the altar. 15 One of them will remove a handful of flour from the grain offering, together with the olive oil and all the incense. He will burn it on the altar as a reminder. It is a soothing aroma to Yahweh. 16 Aaron and his sons will eat the rest of it. They will eat unleavened bread in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 17 Don’t use yeast in baking the bread. I have given it to them as their share from the offerings by fire made to me. It is very holy like the offering for sin and the guilt offering. 18 Every male descendant of Aaron may eat it. It is a permanent law for generations to come regarding the offering by fire to Yahweh. Everyone who touches it will become holy.”

Special Grain Offerings from the Priests

19 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 20 “This is the offering that Aaron and his sons must bring to Yahweh on the day he is anointed—eight cups of flour. They must do this every day. He must offer half of it in the morning and half in the evening. 21 Prepare it in a frying pan with olive oil, mixing it well. Offer baked pieces of the grain offering as a soothing aroma to Yahweh. 22 Aaron’s son who is anointed to take his place as priest will prepare it. This is a permanent law of Yahweh: It must be completely burned. 23 Every grain offering made by a priest must be completely burned. It must not be eaten.”

Instructions for the Offering for Sin

24 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 25 “Tell Aaron and his sons: These are the instructions for the offering for sin. The offering for sin must be slaughtered in Yahweh’s presence in the same place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. It is very holy. 26 The priest who makes the offering for sin will eat it in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 27 Anything that touches its meat will be holy. If blood gets on someone’s clothes, he must wash them in a holy place. 28 Any piece of pottery in which the offering for sin is cooked must be broken into pieces. Any copper kettle in which the offering for sin is cooked must be scoured and rinsed with water. 29 Any male among the priests may eat the offering for sin. It is very holy. 30 Any offering for sin must not be eaten if some of the blood was brought into the holy place in the tent of meeting to make peace with the Lord. It must be burned.”

Psalm 5-6

Psalm 5

For the choir director; for flutes; a psalm by David.

Open your ears to my words, O Yahweh.
    Consider my innermost thoughts.
Pay attention to my cry for help, my Melek and my Elohim,
because I pray only to you.
In the morning, O Yahweh, hear my voice.
In the morning I lay my needs in front of you,
            and I wait.

You are not an El who takes pleasure in wickedness.
Evil will never be your guest.
Those who brag cannot stand in your sight.
    You hate all troublemakers.
You destroy those who tell lies.
Yahweh is disgusted with bloodthirsty and deceitful people.

But I will enter your house because of your great mercy.
Out of reverence for you, I will bow toward your holy temple.
O Yahweh, lead me in your righteousness because of those who spy on me.
Make your way in front of me smooth.

Nothing in their mouths is truthful.
    Destruction comes from their hearts.
        Their throats are open graves.
            They flatter with their tongues.

10 Condemn them, O Elohim.
Let their own schemes be their downfall.
Throw them out for their many crimes
because they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice.
Let them sing with joy forever.
Protect them, and let those who love your name triumph in you.
12 You bless righteous people, O Yahweh.
Like a large shield, you surround them with your favor.

Psalm 6

For the choir director; with stringed instruments, on the sheminith;[a] a psalm by David.

O Yahweh, do not punish me in your anger
or discipline me in your rage.
Have pity on me, O Yahweh, because I am weak.
Heal me, O Yahweh, because my bones shake with terror.
My soul has been deeply shaken with terror.
    But you, O Yahweh, how long . . . ?

Come back, O Yahweh.
    Rescue me.
Save me because of your mercy!
In death, no one remembers you.
In the grave, who praises you?

I am worn out from my groaning.
My eyes flood my bed every night.
I soak my couch with tears.
My eyes blur from grief.
They fail because of my enemies.

Get away from me, all you troublemakers,
because Yahweh has heard the sound of my crying.
Yahweh has heard my plea for mercy.
        Yahweh accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be put to shame and deeply shaken with terror.
In a moment they will retreat and be put to shame.

Proverbs 21

The Lord Controls Wise and Foolish People

21 The king’s heart is like streams of water.
    Both are under Yahweh’s control.
He turns them in any direction he chooses.
A person thinks everything he does is right,
    but Yahweh weighs hearts.
Doing what is right and fair
is more acceptable to Yahweh than offering a sacrifice.
A conceited look and an arrogant attitude,
which are the lamps of wicked people, are sins.

The plans of a hard-working person lead to prosperity,
but everyone who is always in a hurry ends up in poverty.
Those who gather wealth by lying are wasting time.
    They are looking for death.
The violence of wicked people will drag them away
since they refuse to do what is just.
The way of a guilty person is crooked,
but the behavior of those who are pure is moral.[a]

Better to live on a corner of a roof
than to share a home with a quarreling woman.
10 The mind of a wicked person desires evil
and has no consideration for his neighbor.
11 When a mocker is punished, a gullible person becomes wise,
and when a wise person is instructed, he gains knowledge.
12 A righteous person wisely considers the house of a wicked person.
He throws wicked people into disasters.

13 Whoever shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will call and not be answered.
14 A gift given in secret calms anger,
and a secret bribe calms great fury.
15 When justice is done, a righteous person is delighted,
    but troublemakers are terrified.
16 A person who wanders from the way of wise behavior
will rest in the assembly of the dead.

17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor.
Whoever loves wine and expensive food will not become rich.
18 Wicked people become a ransom for righteous people,
and treacherous people will take the place of decent people.
19 Better to live in a desert
than with a quarreling and angry woman.
20 Costly treasure and wealth are in the home of a wise person,
    but a fool devours them.
21 Whoever pursues righteousness and mercy
will find life, righteousness, and honor.

22 A wise man attacks a city of warriors
and pulls down the strong defenses in which they trust.
23 Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.
24 An arrogant, conceited person is called a mocker.
    His arrogance knows no limits.

25 The desire of a lazy person will kill him
because his hands refuse to work.
26 All day long he feels greedy,
but a righteous person gives and does not hold back.

27 The sacrifice of wicked people is disgusting,
especially if they bring it with evil intent.
28 A lying witness will die,
but a person who listens to advice will continue to speak.
29 A wicked person puts up a bold front,
but a decent person’s way of life is his own security.

30 No wisdom, no understanding, and no advice
    can stand up against Yahweh.
31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but the victory belongs to Yahweh.

Colossians 4

Masters, be just and fair to your slaves because you know that you also have a master in heaven.

Advice for All Christians

Keep praying. Pay attention when you offer prayers of thanksgiving. At the same time also pray for us. Pray that God will give us an opportunity to speak the word so that we may tell the mystery about Christ. It is because of this mystery that I am a prisoner. Pray that I may make this mystery as clear as possible. This is what I have to do.

Be wise in the way you act toward those who are outside the Christian faith. Make the most of your opportunities.

Everything you say should be kind and well thought out so that you know how to answer everyone.

Greetings from Paul and His Coworkers

I’m sending Tychicus to you. He is our dear brother, trustworthy deacon,[a] and partner in the Lord’s work. He will tell you everything that is happening to me. I’m sending him to you so that you may know how we are doing and so that he may encourage you. I’m sending Onesimus with him. Onesimus is from your city and is our faithful and dear brother. They will tell you about everything that’s happening here.

10 Aristarchus, who is a prisoner like me, sends greetings. So does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. You have received instructions about Mark. If he comes to you, welcome him. 11 Jesus, called Justus, also greets you. They are the only converts from the Jewish religion who are working with me for God’s kingdom. They have provided me with comfort. 12 Epaphras, a servant of Christ Yeshua from your city, greets you. He always prays intensely for you. He prays that you will continue to be mature and completely convinced of everything that God wants. 13 I assure you that he works hard for you and the people in Laodicea and Hierapolis. 14 My dear friend Luke, the physician, and Demas greet you. 15 Greet our brothers and sisters in Laodicea, especially Nympha and the church that meets in her house.

16 After you have read this letter, read it in the church at Laodicea. Make sure that you also read the letter from Laodicea.

17 Tell Archippus to complete all the work that he started as the Lord’s servant.

18 I, Paul, am writing this greeting with my own hand. Remember that I’m a prisoner. God’s good will[b] be with you.
