47 ¶ Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh and said, My father and my brethren and their sheep and their cows and all that they have are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.
2 And of the least of his brethren he took five men and presented them unto Pharaoh.
3 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy slaves are pastors of sheep, both we and also our fathers.
4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come, for thy slaves have no pasture for their sheep, for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan; now therefore, we pray thee, let thy slaves dwell in the land of Goshen.
5 And Pharaoh spoke unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee;
6 the land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell; and if thou knowest any men of valour among them, then make them rulers over my livestock.
7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou?
9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have the days of the years of my life been and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.
10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh.
11 Thus Joseph placed his father and his brethren and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12 And Joseph nourished his father and his brethren, and all his father’s household with bread, according to their families.
13 ¶ And there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.
14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the food which they bought from him; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 And when money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph and said, Give us bread, for why should we die in thy presence for the money fails?
16 And Joseph said, Give your livestock, and I will give you for your livestock if the money has failed.
17 And they brought their livestock unto Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses and for the sheep and for the bovine livestock and for the asses, and he fed them with bread for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord how that the money is gone; my lord also has our herds of cattle; there is not nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies and our lands.
19 Why shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be slaves unto Pharaoh, and give us seed that we may live, and not die, that the land not be desolate.
20 Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for each one of the Egyptians sold his field because the famine prevailed over them; so the land became Pharaoh’s.
21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.
22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh and ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
23 Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh; behold, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.
24 And it shall come to pass in the increase that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and for food for your little ones.
25 And they said, Thou hast saved our lives; let us find grace in the sight of my lord that we might be Pharaoh’s slaves.
26 And Joseph made it a statute over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 ¶ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they had possessions therein and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the whole age of Jacob was one hundred forty-seven years.
29 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die; and he called his son Joseph and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh and deal with me in mercy and truth; do not bury me, I pray thee, in Egypt;
30 but I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.
31 And he said, Swear unto me. And he swore unto him. Then Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.
1 ¶ Forasmuch as many have attempted to set forth in order the history of those things which among us have been most certain,
2 even as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning taught us and thus were ministers of the word,
3 it seemed good also to me, after having understood all the things from the beginning with great diligence, to write them unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 that thou mightest know the security of those things in which thou hast been instructed.
5 ¶ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.
7 And they had no child because Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well advanced in years.
8 And it came to pass that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense entering into the temple of the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the time of incense.
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
16 And he shall turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee and to show thee this gospel.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb and not able to speak until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou didst not believe my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he communicated with signs and remained speechless.
23 And it came to pass that as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 ¶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth
27 to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her and said, Hail, thou that art much graced, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his words and wondered in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 Then the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt call his name Jesus.
32 He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David;
33 and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy relative Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing is impossible.
38 Then Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
13 ¶ Behold, my eyes have seen all this; my ears have heard and understood it.
2 As you know it, I know it; I am not inferior unto you.
3 But I would speak with the Almighty, and I desired to dispute with God.
4 That ye are certainly forgers of lies; ye are all physicians of no value.
5 O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be unto you instead of wisdom.
6 Hear now my dispute, and hearken to the arguments of my lips.
7 Are ye to speak iniquity for God? Are ye to speak deceitfully for him?
8 Are ye to bring honour unto him? Are ye to contend for God?
9 Would it be good for him to search you out? As one man mocks another, do ye so mock him?
10 He will reprove you severely, if in secret you give him such honour.
11 Certainly his excellency should make you afraid, and his dread should fall upon you.
12 Your memories shall be compared unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
13 ¶ Listen to me, and I will speak, and afterward let come on me what will.
14 Why shall I take my flesh in my teeth and put my life in the palm of my hand?
15 Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.
16 He also shall be my saving health; for the hypocrite shall not enter into his presence.
17 Hear diligently my reason and my declaration with your ears.
18 Behold now, if I draw near unto the judgment; I know that I shall be justified.
19 Who is he that will contend with me? For now, if I remain silent, I shall die.
20 At the least, grant me these two things; then I will not hide myself from thee:
21 withdraw thy hand from me; and let not thy dread make me afraid.
22 Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me.
23 ¶ How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.
24 Why dost thou hide thy face, and hold me for thine enemy?
25 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? Wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?
26 Why dost thou write bitter things against me and make me carry the iniquities of my youth.
27 Thou dost put my feet also in the stocks and look narrowly unto all my paths; thou dost set a print upon the heels of my feet.
28 And man, is as a rotten thing that is being consumed, as a garment that is moth eaten.
1 ¶ Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes, our brother,
2 unto the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of God which is at Corinth, to those that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
3 Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I thank my God always on your behalf for the grace of God which is given you in Christ Jesus,
5 that in every thing ye are enriched in him in all word and in all knowledge,
6 with which the testimony of the Christ was confirmed in you,
7 so that ye lack nothing in any gift, waiting for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ,
8 who shall also confirm that ye shall remain unimpeachable unto the end, in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called into the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 ¶ Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you, but that ye be perfect, joined together in the same understanding and in the same perception.
11 For it has been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by those of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 In other words, that each one of you says, I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and I of Christ.
13 Is the Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized into the name of Paul?
14 ¶ I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius,
15 lest any should say that ye were baptized into my name.
16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas; besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17 ¶ For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross {Gr. stauros – stake} of Christ should be made void.
18 For the word of the cross {Gr. stauros – stake} is foolishness to those that perish, but unto us who are saved, it is the power of God.
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the philosopher of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For in the wisdom of God, since the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save those that believe.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom,
23 but we preach Christ crucified, {Gr. Stauroo – hung on a stake} unto the Jews a stumblingblock and unto the Gentiles foolishness;
24 but unto those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 For that which is foolish of God is wiser than men, and that which is weak of God is stronger than men.
26 For look upon your vocation, brothers, that ye are not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble,
27 but rather God has chosen that which is the foolishness of the world to confound the wise, and God has chosen that which is the weakness of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
28 and that which is vile of the world and that which is despised God has chosen, and things which are not, to bring to nought the things that are,
29 that no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him ye are reborn in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
31 that, according as it is written, He that glories, let him glory in the Lord.
