32 ¶ And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host; and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

¶ And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau: Thy slave Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now;

and I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menslaves, and womenslaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cows and the camels, into two bands

and said, If Esau comes to the one company and smites it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said unto me, Return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee.

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which thou hast showed unto thy slave; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan and now I am become two bands.

11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him lest he come and smite me and the mother with the children.

12 And thou hast said, I will surely do thee good and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 ¶ And he lodged there that same night and took of that which came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother:

14 two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred sheep and twenty rams,

15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his slaves, every drove by themselves and said unto his slaves, Pass before me and put a space between drove and drove.

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau, my brother, meets thee and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou? And where goest thou? And for whom are these before thee?

18 Then thou shalt say, They are thy slave Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau; and, behold, also he is behind us.

19 And so commanded he the second and the third and all that followed those droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau when ye find him.

20 And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.

21 So the present went over before him, and he lodged that night in the company.

22 And he rose up that night and took his two wives and his two womenservants and his eleven sons and passed over the ford Jabbok.

23 And he took them and sent them over the brook and sent over all that he had.

24 ¶ And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.

25 And when the man saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was disjointed as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me.

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And he said, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29 And Jacob asked him and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Why dost thou ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face, and my soul was saved.

31 And as he passed over Penuel, the sun rose upon him, and he limped upon his thigh.

32 Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

Mark 3

¶ And he entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand.

And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day, that they might accuse him.

So he said unto the man who had the withered hand, Stand forth.

And he said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days or to do evil? to save the person or to kill them? But they were silent.

And looking round about on them with anger, being grieved for the blindness of their hearts, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out and his hand was restored whole as the other.

And as the Pharisees went forth, they took counsel with the Herodians against him, to kill him.

But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea

and from Jerusalem and from Idumaea and from beyond Jordan. And those who dwell around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing what great things he did, came unto him.

And he spoke to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

10 For he had healed many, insomuch that as many as had plagues pressed upon him to touch him.

11 And the unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him and cried out, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

13 ¶ And he went up to the mountain and called unto himself whom he would, and they came unto him.

14 And he established twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach

15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out devils:

16 Simon, whom he gave the name Peter;

17 and James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, whom he surnamed them Boanerges, which is The sons of thunder;

18 and Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alphaeus and Thaddaeus and Simon the Canaanite

19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him; and they came home.

20 And the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

21 And when his friends and family heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him; for they said, He is beside himself.

22 ¶ But the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said that he had Beelzebub and that by the prince of the devils he cast out devils.

23 And he called them unto him and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot remain.

25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot remain.

26 And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot remain, but has an end.

27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house.

28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men and whatever blasphemies with which they shall blaspheme,

29 but whosoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit shall never have forgiveness but is obligated to eternal judgment,

30 because they said, He has an unclean spirit.

31 ¶ There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.

32 The multitude was sitting all around him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brothers and sisters seek thee without.

33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother or my brethren?

34 And looking round about on those who sat about him, he said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

35 For whosoever doeth the will of God, the same is my brother and my sister and my mother.

Esther 8

¶ On that same day King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the Jews’ enemy, unto Esther, the queen. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was unto her.

And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

¶ And Esther spoke yet again before the king and fell down at his feet and besought him with tears to put away the evil of Haman, the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.

Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. So Esther arose and stood before the king,

And said, If it pleases the king and if I have found grace in his sight and if the thing is right before the king and if I am good in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces.

For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? How can I endure to see the destruction of my nation?

Then King Ahasuerus said unto Esther, the queen, and to Mordecai, the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him upon the gallows because he extended his hand against the Jews.

Write ye also for the Jews, as it pleases you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s ring may not be revoked.

Then the king’s scribes were called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the twenty-third day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews and to the lieutenants and the captains and the princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, unto each province according to the writing thereof, and unto each people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.

10 And he wrote in King Ahasuerus’s name and sealed it with the king’s ring and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, mules that were born of mares,

11 that the king granted power to the Jews who were in all the cities to gather themselves together and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish any army of the people or province that would assault them, and even their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,

12 upon the same day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

13 The copy of the writing which was to be given as law in each province was published unto all people and said that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves of their enemies.

14 So the posts rode upon mules, they went out on mules, being hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the law was given at Shushan, the palace.

15 ¶ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white and with a great crown of gold and with a mantel of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.

16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honour.

17 And in each province and in each city wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a banquet and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

Romans 3

¶ What advantage then has the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

Much in every way: first, certainly, that the oracles of God have been entrusted unto them.

For what if some of them did not believe? Shall their unbelief have made the truth of God without effect?

No, in no wise: for God is true, and every man a liar; as it is written, That thou might be justified in thy words and might overcome when thou dost judge.

And if our iniquity commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Shall for this reason God be unjust who sends punishment? (I speak as a man.)

No, in no wise: for then how shall God judge the world?

For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto his glory, why even so am I also judged as a sinner?

And why not say (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? The condemnation of whom is just.

What then? Are we better than they? No, in no wise; for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin;

10 as it is written, There is no one righteous, no, not one;

11 there is no one that understands; there is no one that seeks after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way; they are together become unprofitable; there is no one that does good, no, not one.

13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips,

14 whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness;

15 their feet are swift to shed blood;

16 destruction and misery are in their ways,

17 and the way of peace they have not known;

18 there is no fear of God before their eyes.

19 ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

20 For by the deeds of the law, no flesh shall be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now, without the law, the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets:

22 the righteousness, that is, of God by the faith of Jesus, the Christ, for all and upon all those that believe in him, for there is no difference;

23 for all have sinned and are made destitute of the glory of God,

24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus, the Christ,

25 whom God purposed for reconciliation through faith in his blood for the manifestation of his righteousness, for the remission of sins that are past, by the patience of God,

26 manifesting in this time his righteousness that he only be the just one and the justifier of him that is of the faith of Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? No, but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore, we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also,

30 seeing it is one God who shall justify the circumcision by faith and the uncircumcision by faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? No, in no wise; to the contrary, we establish the law.
