1 Samuel 17

17 1 The Philistines make war against Israel. 10 Goliath defieth Israel. 17 David is sent to his brethren. 34 The strength and boldness of David. 47 The Lord saveth not by sword nor spear. 50 David killeth Goliath, and the Philistines flee.

Now the Philistines gathered their armies to battle, and came together to Sochoh which is in Judah, and pitched between Sochoh and Azekah, [a]in the coast of Dammim.

And Saul, and the men of Israel assembled and pitched in the valley [b]of Elah, and put themselves in battle array to meet the Philistines.

And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: so a valley was between them.

¶ Then came a man between them [c]both out of the tents of the Philistines, named Goliath of Gath: his height was six cubits and an hand breadth,

And had an helmet of brass upon his head, and a [d]brigandine upon him: and the weight of his brigandine was five thousand [e]shekels of brass.

And he had [f]boots of brass upon his legs, and a shield of brass upon his shoulders.

And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam: and his spear head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

And he stood, and cried against the host of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

If he be able to fight with me, and [g]kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I overcome him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

10 Also the Philistine said, I defy the host of Israel this day: give me a man, that we may fight [h]together.

11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were discouraged, and greatly afraid.

12 ¶ Now this David was the (A)son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, named Jesse, which had eight sons: and [i]this man was taken for an old man in the days of Saul.

13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to battle were Eliab the eldest, and the next Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14 So David was the least: and the three eldest went after Saul.

15 David also [j]went, but he returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.

16 And the Philistine drew near in the morning, and evening, and continued forty days.

17 And Jesse said unto David his son, [k]Take now for thy brethren an Ephah of this parched corn, and these ten cakes, and run to the host to thy brethren.

18 Also carry these ten fresh cheeses unto the captain, and look how thy brethren fare, and receive their [l]pledge.

19 (Then Saul and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.)

20 ¶ So David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took and went as Jesse had commanded him, and came within the compass of the host: and the host went out in array, and shouted in the battle.

21 For Israel and the Philistines had put themselves in array, army against army.

22 And David left the things which he bare, under the hands of the keeper of the [m]carriage, and ran into the host, and came, and asked his brethren [n]how they did.

23 And as he talked with them, behold, the man that was between the two armies, came up, (whose name was Goliath the Philistine of Gath) out of the [o]army of the Philistines, and spake [p]such words, and David heard them.

24 And all the men of Israel when they saw the man, ran away from him, and were sore afraid.

25 For every man of Israel said, Saw ye not this man that cometh up? even to revile Israel is he come up: and to him that killeth him, will the King give great riches, and will give him his (B)daughter, yea, and make his father’s house [q]free in Israel.

26 ¶ Then David spake to the men that stood with him, and said, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the [r]shame from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should revile the host of the living God?

27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, Thus shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, and Eliab was very angry with David, and said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the malice of thine heart, that thou art come down to see the battle.

29 Then David said, What have I now done? Is there not a [s]cause?

30 And he departed from him into the presence of another, and spake of the same manner, and the people answered him according to the former words.

31 ¶ And they that heard the words which David spake, rehearsed them before Saul, which caused him to be brought.

32 So David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail him, because of him: thy servant will go, and fight with this Philistine.

33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not [t]able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art a boy, and he is a man of war from his youth.

34 And David answered unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a [u]lion, and likewise a bear, and took a sheep out of the flock,

35 And I went out after him and smote him, and took it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by the beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 So thy servant slew both the lion, and the bear: therefore this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath railed on the host of the living God.

37 ¶ Moreover David said, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. Then Saul said unto David, [v]Go, and the Lord be with thee.

38 And Saul put his raiment upon David, and put an helmet of brass upon his head, and put a brigandine upon him.

39 Then girded David his sword upon his raiment, and [w]began to go: for he never proved it: and David said unto Saul, I can not go with these: for I am not accustomed. Wherefore David put them off him.

40 Then took he his [x]staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of a brook, and put them in his shepherd’s bag or scrip, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.

41 ¶ And the Philistine came and drew near unto David, and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42 Now when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but young, ruddy, and of a comely face.

43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine [y]cursed David by his gods.

44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the field.

45 ¶ Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield, but I come to thee in the Name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the host of Israel, whom thou hast railed upon.

46 This [z]day shall the Lord close thee in mine hand, and I shall smite thee, and take thine head from thee, and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth, that all the world may know that Israel hath a God,

47 And that all this assembly may know, that the Lord saveth not with sword nor with spear, (for the battle is the Lord’s) and he will give you into our hands.

48 And when the Philistine arose to come and draw near unto David, David [aa]hasted and ran to fight against the Philistine.

49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took out a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sticked in his forehead, and he fell groveling to the earth.

50 So David overcame the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him, when David had no sword in his hand.

51 Then David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of his sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. So when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

52 And the men of Israel and Judah arose, and shouted, and followed after the Philistines, until they came to the [ab]valley, and unto the gates of Ekron: and the Philistines fell down wounded by the way of Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.

53 And the children of Israel returned from pursuing the Philistines, and spoiled their tents.

54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem, and put his armor in his [ac]tent.

55 ¶ When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner the captain of his host, Abner, [ad]whose son is this young man? and Abner answered, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56 Then the King said, Inquire thou whose son this young man is.

57 And when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, then Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

Romans 15

15 1 The stronger must employ their strength to strengthen the weak. 5 By Christ’s example, 7 who received 8 not only the Jews, 10 but also the Gentiles. 15 The cause why he wrote this Epistle.

We [a]which are strong, ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to [b]please ourselves.

Therefore let every man please his neighbor in that that is [c]good to edification.

[d]For Christ also would not please himself, but as it is written, (A)The rebukes of them which rebuke thee, fell on me.

[e]For whatsoever things are written [f]aforetime, are written for our learning, that we through patience, and comfort of the [g]Scriptures might have hope.

[h]Now the God of patience and consolation give you that ye be (B)like-minded one towards another, according to Christ Jesus,

That ye with one mind, and with one mouth may praise God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also [i]received us to the glory of God.

[j]Now I say, that Jesus Christ was a minister of the [k]circumcision, for the [l]truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers.

[m]And let the Gentiles praise God, for his mercy, as it is written, (C)For this cause I will [n]confess thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy Name.

10 And again he saith, (D)Rejoice, ye Gentiles with his people.

11 And again, (E)Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud ye him all people together.

12 And again Isaiah saith, (F)There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in him shall the Gentiles trust.

13 [o]Now the God of [p]hope fill you with [q]all joy, and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the holy Ghost.

14 [r]And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that [s]ye also are full of goodness, and filled with all knowledge, and are able to admonish one another.

15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have somewhat boldly after a sort written unto you, as one that putteth you in remembrance, through the grace that is given me of God,

16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ toward the Gentiles, ministering the Gospel of God, that the [t]offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the holy Ghost.

17 [u]I have therefore whereof I may rejoice in Christ Jesus in those things which pertain to God.

18 For I dare not speak of anything, which [v]Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient in word and deed,

19 With the [w]power of signs and wonders, by the power of the spirit of God: so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have caused to abound the Gospel of Christ.

20 Yea, so I enforced myself to preach the Gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should have built on another man’s foundation.

21 But as it is written, (G)To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see him, and they that heard not, shall understand him.

22 (H)[x]Therefore also I have been oft let to come unto you:

23 But now seeing I have no more place in these quarters, and also have (I)been desirous many years agone to come unto you,

24 When I shall take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, after that I have been somewhat filled with your company.

25 But now go I to Jerusalem, to [y]minister unto the Saints.

26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia, to make a certain distribution unto the poor Saints which are at Jerusalem.

27 [z]For it hath pleased them, and their debtors are they: (J)for if the Gentiles be made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to [aa]minister unto them in carnal things.

28 When I have therefore performed this, and have [ab]sealed them this [ac]fruit, I will pass by you into Spain.

29 [ad]And I know when I come, that I shall come to you with abundance of the blessing of the Gospel of Christ.

30 Also brethren, I beseech you for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the [ae]love of the spirit, that ye would strive with me by prayers to God for me,

31 That I may be delivered from them which are disobedient in Judea, and that my service which I have to do at Jerusalem, may be accepted of the Saints,

32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.

33 Thus the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Lamentations 2

How hath the Lord [a]darkened the daughter of Zion in his wrath! and hath cast down from [b]heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his [c]footstool in the day of his wrath!

The Lord hath destroyed all the habitations of Jacob, and not spared: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah: he hath cast them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.

He hath cut off in his fierce wrath all the [d]horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his [e]right hand from before the enemy, and there was kindled in Jacob like a flame of fire, which devoured round about.

He [f]hath bent his bow like an enemy: his right hand was stretched up as an adversary, and slew all that was pleasant to the eye in the Tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his wrath like fire.

The Lord was as an enemy: he hath devoured Israel and consumed all his palaces: he hath destroyed his strongholds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah lamentation and mourning.

For he hath destroyed his Tabernacle, as a garden he hath destroyed his Congregation: the Lord hath caused the feasts and Sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his wrath, the King and the Priest.

The Lord hath forsaken his altar: he hath abhorred his Sanctuary: he hath given into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces: they have made a [g]noise in the House of the Lord, as in the day of solemnity.

The Lord hath determined to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he stretched out a line: he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart, [h]and the wall to lament: they were destroyed together.

Her gates are sunk to the ground: he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her King and her Princes are among the Gentiles: the Law is no more, neither can her Prophets [i]receive any vision from the Lord.

10 The Elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads: they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

11 Mine eyes do fail with tears: my bowels swell: my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the children and sucklings [j]swoon in the streets of the city.

12 They have said to their mothers, Where is [k]bread and drink? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, and when they [l]gave up the ghost in their mother’s bosom.

13 [m]What thing shall I take to witness for thee? What thing shall I compare to thee, O daughter Jerusalem? what shall I liken to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?

14 Thy Prophets have[n]looked out vain and foolish things for thee, and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity, but have looked out for thee false [o]prophecies, and causes of banishment.

15 All that pass by the way, clap their hands at thee: they hiss and wag their head upon the daughter Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call, The perfection of beauty, and the joy of the whole earth?

16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth, saying, Let us devour it: certainly this is the day that we looked for: we have found and seen it.

17 (A)The Lord hath done that which he had purposed: he hath fulfilled his word that he had determined of old time: he hath thrown down, and not spared: he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, and set up the horn of thine adversaries.

18 Their heart (B)cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter Zion, let tears run down like a river, day and night: take thee no rest, neither let the apple of thine eye cease.

19 Arise, cry in the night: in the beginning of the watches, pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thine hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the corners of all the streets.

20 Behold, O Lord, and consider to whom thou hast done thus: shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a [p]span long? shall the Priest and the Prophet be slain in the Sanctuary of the Lord?

21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword: thou hast slain them in the day of thy wrath: thou hast killed, and not spared.

22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my [q]terrors round about, so that in the day of the Lord’s wrath none escaped nor remained: those that I have nourished and brought up, hath mine enemy consumed.

Psalm 33

33 1 He exhorteth good men to praise God, for that he hath not only created all things, and by his providence governeth the same, but also is faithful in his promises, 10 he understandeth man’s heart, and scattereth the counsel of the wicked, 16 so that no man can be preserved by any creature or man’s strength: by they, that put their confidence in his mercy, shall be preserved from all adversities.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for it [a]becometh upright men to be thankful.

Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with viol and [b]instrument of ten strings.

Sing unto him a new song: sing cheerfully with a loud voice.

For the [c]word of the Lord is righteous, and all his [d]works are faithful.

He [e]loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He [f]gathereth the waters of the sea together as upon an heap, and layeth up the depths in his treasures.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all them that dwell in the world, fear him.

For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it [g]stood.

10 The Lord breaketh the [h]counsel of the heathen, and bringeth to nought the devices of the people.

11 The counsel of the Lord shall stand forever, and the thoughts of his heart throughout all ages.

12 Blessed is that nation, whose [i]God is the Lord: even the people that he hath chosen for his inheritance.

13 The Lord [j]looketh down from heaven, and beholdeth all the children of men.

14 From the habitation of his dwelling, he beholdeth all them that dwell in the earth.

15 He [k]fashioneth their hearts every one, and understandeth all their works.

16 The [l]King is not saved by the multitude of an host, neither is the mighty man delivered by great strength.

17 A horse is a vain help, and shall not deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, [m]the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, and upon them that trust in his mercy,

19 To deliver their souls from death, and to preserve them in famine.

20 [n]Our soul waiteth for the Lord: for he is our help and our shield.

21 Surely our heart shall rejoice in him, because we trusted in his holy Name.

22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we trusted in thee.
