Joshua 7

1 The Lord is angry with Achan. 4 They of Ai put the Israelites to flight. 6 Joshua prayeth to the Lord. 16 Joshua inquireth out him that sinned, and stoneth him and all his.

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the [a]excommunicate thing: for (A)Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, took of the excommunicate thing: wherefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to [b]Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the East side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up, and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai,

And returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up, but let as it were two or three thousand men go up, and smite Ai, and make not all the people to labor thither, for they are few.

So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men, and they fled before the men of Ai.

And the [c]men of Ai smote of them upon a thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted away like water.

Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the Ark of the Lord, until the eventide, he, and the Elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, and to destroy us? would God we had been content to dwell on the [d]other side Jordan.

Oh Lord what shall I say, when Israel turn their backs before their enemies?

For the Canaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall compass us, and destroy our name out of the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy mighty [e]Name?

10 ¶ And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up: wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11 Israel hath sinned, and they have transgressed my covenant, which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the excommunicate thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and have put it even with their own stuff.

12 Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies: but have turned their backs before their enemies, because they be execrable: neither will I be with you anymore, except ye [f]destroy the excommunicate from among you.

13 Up therefore, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an execrable thing among you, O Israel, therefore ye cannot stand against your enemies, until ye have put the [g]execrable thing from among you.

14 In the morning therefore ye shall come according to your tribes, and the tribe which the Lord taketh, shall come according to the families: and the family which the Lord shall take, shall come by the households: and the household which the Lord shall take, shall come man by man.

15 And he that is [h]taken with the excommunicate thing, shall be burnt with fire, he, and all that he hath, because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16 ¶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes: and the tribe of Judah was taken.

17 And he brought the families of Judah, and took the family of the Zarhites, and he brought the family of the Zarhites, man by man, and Zabdi was taken.

18 And he brought his household, man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah was taken.

19 Then Joshua said unto Achan, My son, I beseech thee, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and [i]make confession unto him, and show me now what thou hast done: hide it not from me.

20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus, and thus have I done.

21 I saw among the spoil a goodly [j]Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, and I covered them, and took them: and behold, they lie hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22 ¶ Then Joshua sent messengers, which ran unto the tent, and behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23 Therefore they took them out of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them before the Lord.

24 Then Joshua took Achan the [k]son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the [l]wedge of gold, and his [m]sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and all Israel with him, brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25 And Joshua said, [n]In as much as thou hast troubled us, the Lord shall trouble thee this day: and all Israel threw stones at him, and burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

26 And they cast upon him a great heap of stones unto this day: and so the Lord turned from his fierce wrath: therefore he called the name of that place, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

Psalm 137-138

137 1 The people of God in their banishment seeing God’s true Religion decay, lived in great anguish and sorrow of heart: the which grief the Chaldeans did so little pity, 3 That they rather increased the same daily with taunts, reproaches and blasphemies against God. 7 Wherefore the Israelites desire God, first to punish the Edomites, who provoked the Babylonians against them, 8 And moved by the Spirit of God, prophesy the destruction of Babylon, where they were handled so tyrannously.

By the rivers of Babel we [a]sat, and there we wept, when we remembered Zion.

We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst [b]thereof.

Then they that led us captive, [c]required of us songs and mirth, when we had hanged up our harps, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

How shall we sing, said we, a song of the Lord in a strange land?

[d]If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget to play.

If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth: yea, if I prefer not Jerusalem to my [e]chief joy.

Remember the children of [f]Edom, O Lord, in the [g]day of Jerusalem, which said, Raze it, raze it to the foundation thereof.

O daughter of Babel, worthy to be destroyed, blessed shall he be that rewardeth thee, as thou hast served us.

[h]Blessed shall he be that taketh and dasheth thy children against the stones.

138 1 David with great courage praiseth the goodness of God toward him, the which is so great,  4 That it is known to foreign princes, who shall praise the Lord together with him. 6 And he is assured to have the like comfort of God in the time following, as he had heretofore.

A Psalm of David.

I will praise thee with my whole heart: even before the [i]gods will I praise thee.

I will worship toward thine holy [j]Temple and praise thy Name, because of thy loving-kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy Name above all things by thy word.

When I called, then thou heardest me, and hast [k]increased strength in my soul.

All the [l]kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord: for they have heard the words of thy mouth.

And they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord is great.

For the Lord is high, yet he beholdeth the lowly, but the proud he knoweth [m]afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet wilt thou revive me: thou wilt stretch forth thine hand upon the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

The Lord will [n]perform his work toward me: O Lord, thy mercy endureth forever: forsake not the works of thine hands.

Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah

1 In what time Jeremiah prophesied. 6 He acknowledgeth his imperfection, and is strengthened of the Lord. 11 The Lord showeth him the destruction of Jerusalem. 17 He commandeth him to preach his word without fear.

The [a]words of Jeremiah the son of [b]Hilkiah one of the Priests that were at [c]Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.

To whom the [d]word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon King of Judah in the thirteenth year of his reign:

And also in the days of Jehoiakim the [e]son of Josiah king of Judah unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah king of Judah, even unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth [f]month.

Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Before I [g]formed thee in the womb, I knew thee, and before thou camest out of the womb, I sanctified thee, and ordained thee to be a Prophet unto the [h]nations.

Then said I, [i]Oh, Lord God, behold, I cannot speak, for I am a child.

But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee, shalt thou speak.

Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

Then the Lord stretched out his hand, and [j]touched my mouth, and the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

10 Behold, this day have I set thee over the [k]nations, and over the kingdoms, to pluck up, and to root out, and to destroy, and throw down, to build, and to plant.

11 After this the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a [l]rod of almond tree.

12 Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast seen aright: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

13 Again the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething [m]pot looking out of the North.

14 Then said the Lord unto me, Out of the [n]North shall a plague be spread upon all the inhabitants of the land.

15 For lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the North, saith the Lord, and they shall come, and everyone shall set his throne in the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and on all the walls thereof round about, and in all the cities of Judah.

16 And I will declare unto them my [o]judgments touching all the wickedness of them that have forsaken me, and have burnt incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

17 Thou therefore truss up thy loins, and arise and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not afraid of their faces, lest I [p]destroy thee before them.

18 For I, behold, I this day have made thee a defenced city, and an [q]iron pillar and walls of brass against the whole land, against the Kings of Judah, and against the Princes thereof, against the Priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

19 For they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

Matthew 15

15 3 The commandments and traditions of men. 12 Offences. 13 The plant which is rooted up. 14 Blind leading the blind. 18 The heart. 22 The woman of Canaan. 26 The children’s bread: whelps. 28 Faith. 32 4,000 men fed. 36 Thanksgiving.

Then [a]came to Jesus the Scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

(A) Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the Elders? for they [b]wash not their hands when they eat bread.

[c]But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

(B)For God hath commanded, saying, [d]Honor thy father and mother: (C)and he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

But ye say, [e]Whosoever shall say to father or mother, By the gift that is offered by me, thou mayest have profit,

Though he honor not his father, or his mother, shall be free: thus have ye made the commandment of God of no [f]authority by your tradition.

[g]O hypocrites, Isaiah prophesied well of you, saying,

(D)This people draweth near unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with the lips, but their heart is far off from me.

But in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines, men’s precepts.

10 [h]Then he called the multitude unto him, and said to them, Hear and understand.

11 (E)That which goeth into the mouth, defileth not the man, but that which cometh out of the mouth that defileth the man.

12 ¶ Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Perceivest thou not, that the Pharisees are offended in hearing this saying?

13 But he answered and said, (F)Every plant which mine heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

14 Let them alone, they be the (G)blind leaders of the blind: and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

15 (H)Then answered Peter, and said to him, Declare unto us this parable.

16 Then said Jesus, Are ye yet without understanding?

17 Perceive ye not yet, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth, come from the heart, and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart (I)come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, slanders.

20 These are the things which defile the man: but to eat with unwashed hands, defileth not the man.

21 (J)And Jesus went thence, and departed into the [i]coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And behold, a woman a [j]Canaanite came out of the same coasts, and cried, saying unto him, Have mercy on me, O Lord, the son of David: my daughter is miserably vexed with a devil.

23 [k]But he answered her not a word. Then came to him his disciples, and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth after us.

24 But he answered, and said, I am not sent, but unto the (K)lost sheep of the [l]house of Israel.

25 Yet she came, and worshipped him, saying, Lord help me.

26 And he answered, and said, It is not good to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to whelps.

27 But she said, Truth, Lord: yet indeed the whelps eat of the crumbs, which fall from their master’s table.

28 Then Jesus answered, and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it to thee, as thou desirest. And her daughter was made whole at that hour.

29 [m]So Jesus (L)went away from thence, and came near unto the sea of Galilee, and went up in a mountain and sat down there.

30 And great multitudes came unto him, (M)having with them, halt, blind, dumb, [n]maimed, and many others, and cast them down, at Jesus’ feet, and he healed them.

31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, to see the dumb speak, the maimed whole, the halt to go, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 (N)[o]Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on this multitude, because they have [p]continued with me already three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not let them depart fasting, lest they faint in the way.

33 And his disciples said unto him, Whence should we get so much bread in the wilderness, as should suffice so great a multitude!

34 And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

35 Then he commandeth the multitude [q]to sit down on the ground.

36 And took the seven loaves, and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37 And they did all eat, and were sufficed, and they took up of the fragments that remained, seven [r]baskets full.

38 And they that had eaten, were four thousand men, beside women, and little children.

39 Then Jesus sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the parts of Magdala.
