Deuteronomy 16

The Passover Festival[a]

16 The month Abib is a special month for you.[b] In this month, you must eat a meal to remember the Passover. Remember what the Lord your God did for you. In that month, he brought you out of Egypt during the night. You must go to the special place that the Lord will choose for his people to worship him. There you must kill one of your animals as a sacrifice to remember the Passover. You may kill one of your cows or sheep. At this feast, eat bread that you make without any yeast. For seven days, you must eat bread that you make without yeast. You ate that kind of bread when you had much trouble in Egypt. You had to leave Egypt in a hurry that night. You must eat that bread each year. Then you will always remember the day when you left Egypt. During those seven days, no one may keep any yeast in their house. There must not be any yeast in the whole land. On the first day, you will kill your animal to eat in the evening. You must eat all the meat that same night, so that there is no meat left in the morning.

You must not kill the animal for the Passover sacrifice in any of the towns that the Lord your God gives to you. You must go to the place that he will choose as his special home. You must kill the animal there, at sunset. That was the time of day when you came out of Egypt. Cook the meat and eat it in the place that the Lord your God will choose. The next morning, you may return to your tents. For the next six days, you must eat bread that you make without yeast. On the seventh day, you must all come together to worship the Lord your God. You must not do any work on that day.

The Festival of Weeks[c]

Count seven weeks from the first day that you bring in crops of grain from your fields. 10 Then eat the Feast of Weeks to worship the Lord your God. Bring the gifts that you want to offer to him. Bring gifts that show how much he has blessed you. 11 You and your family will be happy to worship the Lord your God, at the special place that he chooses. Enjoy time together with your children, your servants and the Levites who live in your town. Also join with the foreign people who live among you, with widows, and children who have no family. Worship God happily together. 12 Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt. So be careful to obey these commands.

The Festival of Huts[d]

13 When you have prepared the grain and the grapes from your fields, eat the Feast of Huts for seven days. 14 Enjoy your feast with your children, your servants and the Levites. Join with the foreign people who live among you, and also with the widows and the children who have no family. 15 Eat this feast to worship the Lord your God at the special place that he chooses. Do it for seven days. He will bless you in everything that you do, so that you grow plenty of food. So you should all enjoy this feast!

16 Three times in every year, all your men must go to the place that the Lord your God will choose. They must go there for the Passover festival, the festival of Weeks and the festival of Huts. Each man must bring with him gifts to offer to the Lord. 17 Give to the Lord as much as you are able to. Your gifts may be large or small, as much as the Lord has blessed you.

Judges

18 Each tribe must choose judges and officers in every town that the Lord gives you. They must judge the people in a way that is fair. 19 Judges must do what is right for every person, rich or poor. They must not accept any bribes. A bribe may hide the truth even from a wise man. It can make honest people tell lies. 20 Make sure that there is justice for everyone in the land that the Lord your God is giving to you. Then the land will belong to you and you will enjoy life in it.

Do not worship other gods

21 When you build an altar to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God, do not put any Asherah pole there. 22 Do not put up any stone pillar as an idol. The Lord your God hates everything like that.[e]

Psalm 103

This is a song that David wrote.

The love of God[a]

103 I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
Everything that is in me, praise his holy name!
I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
Never forget all the good things that he has done for you!
He forgives all my sins.
He makes me well again when I am ill.
He saves me from the deep hole of death's power.
He always loves me and he is kind to me.
That is how he blesses me so much!
He gives me many good things for my life here.
So I become strong again, with the strength of a young eagle.
The Lord does what is right and fair.
He helps poor people who suffer.
He showed Moses how he works to help his people.
He showed the Israelites the great things that he could do.
The Lord is kind to people and he forgives them.
He is slow to get angry and his love always continues.
He will not always tell us that we are wrong.
He will not always continue to be angry.
10 We should receive much punishment for the bad things that we do.
But the Lord does not punish us so much.
11 For people who worship him, his faithful love is very great.
How far is the sky above the earth? His love is greater than that!
12 How far is the east from the west?
The Lord has taken our sins further away than that!
He no longer says that we are guilty.
13 As a father is kind to his children, the Lord is kind to us.
He is kind to people who worship him.
14 He knows that we are weak humans.
He remembers that he used dust to make us.
15 A person's life is like grass that quickly dies.
He is strong only for a short time, like wild flowers in a field.
16 A hot wind blows over flowers and they die!
Nobody even remembers where they were growing.
17 But the faithful love of the Lord
will always be with people who worship him.
He promises to be kind to their children's children for ever.
18 He continues to love people who obey his covenant.
Those are the people who obey his laws.
19 The Lord rules from his throne in heaven.
He rules as king over everything.
20 You who are the Lord's angels,
you strong angels who do what he tells you to do,
    praise the Lord!
21 All of you who belong to his armies in heaven,
his servants who do what he wants,
    praise the Lord!
22 Yes, everything that the Lord has made,
in all the places that he rules over,
    praise the Lord!

I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’

Isaiah 43

God redeems Israel

43 Israelites, descendants of Jacob, the Lord created you, and he made you who you are. Now he says this to you:

‘Do not be afraid,
I have rescued you to belong to me.
I have called you by your name,
    so now you are mine.
When you go through deep water,
    I will be with you.
When you cross dangerous rivers,
    you will not drown.
When you walk through fire,
    it will not burn you.
The flames will not destroy you.[a]
I am the Lord, your God,
    so I will rescue you.
I am Israel's Holy God, your Saviour.
I gave Egypt as the price to buy you back.
I gave Ethiopia and Seba to their enemies,
so that you could be free.
You are very valuable to me.
You are my special people, and I love you.
So I will give other people to their enemies,
    to keep your lives safe.
Other nations will pay the price,
    instead of you.
I am with you,
    so do not be afraid.
I will bring your descendants from the east.
I will also bring you together from the west.
I will say to people in the north,
    “Give them back!”
And I will say to people in the south,
    “Do not stop them!”
Bring my sons from places that are far away.
Bring my daughters from the ends of the earth.
Bring back everyone who belongs to me.
I created them,
so that they would bring honour to me.
I made them who they are.
    Yes, I made them!

So bring the people to me.
They have eyes, but they are blind!
They have ears, but they are deaf!
Tell the people of all nations to come together.
Did any of their gods tell us what would happen?
If anyone heard them speak the truth,
they should bring those people to this court.
Then they can tell us that they were right.
People could say, “They spoke the truth.” ’

10 The Lord says to his people,

‘You are the people who must say that I am right.
I have chosen you as my servant.
I chose you so that you may know me,
    and also believe in me.
Then you would understand that I am the true God.
There has never been any other god except me,
    and there never will be.
11 I am the Lord, I alone.
There is no other saviour, except me.
12 I promised to save you,
and I did what I said I would do.
I told everyone what I had done.
There was no foreign god among you,
    who did that for you.
So you are the people who must say
that I am the only true God.’
That is what the Lord says.
13 ‘Today and every day, I am God.
If I hold you in my hand,
nobody can take you away from my power.
When I do something,
    nobody can change it.’

14 The Lord is your Redeemer, Israel's Holy God. He says this:

‘I will send an army to attack Babylon,
so that you, my people, will be safe.
I will cause all the Babylonians to run away.
They were proud of their great ships,
but now they will use them to escape from their enemies.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy God.
I am the one who created Israel.
    I am your King.’

16 The Lord is the one who made a road through the sea for you to cross. You went on a dry path in the middle of the deep water. 17 He led the enemy's great army, with their chariots and their horses, to chase you. They all fell down and the water drowned them. Their lives finished, like the flame of a lamp that stops burning.

18 The Lord did all that for you, but now he says,

‘Forget those things that happened a long time ago.
Do not think about past events.
19 Look! Now I will do something that is new!
It is already beginning to happen.
    Surely, you can recognize it.
Yes, I will make a road through the desert.
I will make streams in the wilderness.
20 The wild animals in the desert praise me,
including the jackals and the owls.
They praise me because I put water in the desert,
    and streams in the wilderness.
I am giving water to the people that I have chosen,
so that they will not be thirsty.
21 They are the people that I made for myself,
so that they would praise me aloud.
22 But you Israelites, Jacob's descendants,
you did not call to me to help you.
You became tired of serving me.
23 You did not bring sheep to me as burnt offerings.
You did not make sacrifices to me,
to show that you respect me.
I did not make it difficult for you,
when I asked you to bring offerings to me.
When I asked you to burn incense to worship me,
that should not have made you tired.
24 You did not buy any spices
    to offer them to me.
You did not bring me the fat from your sacrifices
    to make me happy.
Instead, you have made it difficult for me,
    because of all your sins.
All the evil things that you do
have caused me to become very tired.
25 But I am the one who removes your sins
when you do not obey me.
I, the Lord, do that, because of who I am.
I do not hold your sins in my mind.
26 So let us talk together about what has happened.
Show me why you think that you are right!
27 Your first ancestor did not obey me.[b]
Your leaders and teachers turned against me.
28 So I caused the priests of your temple
    to become ashamed.
I caused enemies to destroy Israel.
I let them insult Jacob's descendants.’

Revelation 13

The wild animal from the sea

13 Then I saw a wild animal that was coming up out of the sea.[a] It had ten horns and there was a crown on each horn. The animal also had seven heads. On each head there was a bad name that insulted God. The wild animal that I saw was like a leopard. But its feet were like a bear's feet and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave his own power and great authority to the wild animal so that it could rule as king.

Someone had hurt one of the wild animal's heads with a bad wound. It seemed that it would soon die. But the wound in the animal's head had become well again. This surprised all the people who were living on the earth. As a result, they were ready to obey what the wild animal said. People worshipped the dragon because he had given his authority to the wild animal. They also worshipped the wild animal. They said, ‘Nobody is like this animal! Nobody is strong enough to fight against him!’

The wild animal received authority to rule people for 42 months. It could speak proud words and insult God. So it started to speak against God. It insulted God's name and the place where he lives, as well as the people who live there in heaven. It received power to fight a war against God's own people and to win against them. It received authority to rule over people from every nation, people from every tribe and people from every language. Nearly all the people who live on the earth will worship the wild animal. But those people whose names are in the Lamb's book of life will not worship it.[b] The Lamb wrote the names of these believers in his book from the beginning of the world. He is the Lamb that people killed as a sacrifice.

Everyone who can understand should listen carefully to these words:

10 ‘If it is right for someone's enemy to catch him, that is what will happen.
If it is right for someone's enemy to kill him with a sword, that is what will happen.’

This means that God's people must be patient and strong. They must continue to trust God.[c]

The wild animal from the land

11 Then I saw a second wild animal. This one was coming up out of the ground.[d] It had two horns like a lamb's horns. But it spoke like a dragon. 12 It worked for the first wild animal and it used the authority of the first wild animal. It made all the people on earth worship the first wild animal. That first animal was the one that someone had hurt very much. It seemed that it would soon die but it had become well again.

13 The second wild animal did great miracles. It even caused fire to come down from heaven to the earth, while people watched. 14 It used the authority of the first wild animal to do many miracles. In that way, it deceived the people who lived on the earth. It told them to make an image of the first wild animal. This was the animal that was still alive after a sword had given it a bad wound. 15 The second wild animal received power to give life to the image of the first wild animal. As a result, the image could speak. It said, ‘Anyone who refuses to worship me must die!’

16 The second wild animal also caused everyone to receive a mark. Everyone received a mark on their right hand or on the front of their head. This included important people and ordinary people, rich people and poor people, free people and slaves. 17 Nobody could buy anything unless they had this mark on them. Nor could they sell anything. This mark shows the wild animal's name or the number of its name.

18 You must think carefully so that you can understand this number. Anyone who is wise should try to understand what the wild animal's number means. It is a human number. The number is 666.
