2 Chronicles 26

King Uzziah of Judah(A)

26 All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was 16 years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. Uzziah rebuilt Elath and returned it to Judah after King Amaziah lay down in death with his ancestors. Uzziah was 16 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 52 years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jecoliah from Jerusalem. He did what Yahweh considered right, as his father Amaziah had done. He dedicated his life to serving Elohim in the days of Zechariah, who taught him to fear Elohim. As long as he dedicated his life to serving Yahweh, Elohim gave him success.

Uzziah went to wage war against the Philistines. He tore down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod. He built cities near Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines. Elohim helped him when he attacked the Philistines, the Arabs who lived in Gur Baal, and the Meunites. The Ammonites paid taxes to Uzziah, and his fame spread to the border of Egypt because he became very powerful. Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at Corner Wall, Valley Gate, and the Angle, and he reinforced them. 10 He built towers in the desert. He dug many cisterns because he had a lot of herds in the foothills and the plains. He had farmers and vineyard workers in the mountains and the fertile fields because he loved the soil.

11 Uzziah had an army of professional soldiers. They were ready to go to war in their companies based on the number organized by the scribe Jeiel and the officer Maaseiah. They were commanded by Hananiah, one of the king’s officials. 12 The total number of family heads among these warriors was 2,600. 13 Under them was an army of 307,500 soldiers. They were a powerful force that could support the king against the enemy. 14 For the entire army Uzziah prepared shields, spears, helmets, armor, bows, and stones for slings. 15 In Jerusalem he made machines designed by inventive people. The machines were placed on the towers and corners to shoot arrows and hurl large stones.

King Uzziah Is Cursed with a Skin Disease(B)

Uzziah’s fame spread far and wide because he had strong support until he became powerful. 16 But when he became powerful, his pride destroyed him. He was unfaithful to Yahweh his Elohim. He went into Yahweh’s temple to burn incense on the incense altar. 17 The priest Azariah went in after him with 80 of Yahweh’s courageous priests. 18 They opposed King Uzziah. They said to him, “Uzziah, you have no right to burn incense as an offering to Yahweh. That right belongs to the priests, Aaron’s descendants, who have been given the holy task of burning incense. Get out of the holy place because you have been unfaithful. Yahweh Elohim will not honor you for this.”

19 Uzziah, who held an incense burner in his hand, became angry. While he was angry with the priests, a skin disease broke out on his forehead. This happened in front of the priests in Yahweh’s temple as Uzziah was at the incense altar. 20 When the chief priest Azariah and all the priests turned toward him, a skin disease was on his forehead. They rushed him away. Uzziah was in a hurry to get out because Yahweh had inflicted him with the disease.

21 King Uzziah had a skin disease until the day he died. Since he had a skin disease, he lived in a separate house and was barred from Yahweh’s temple. His son Jotham was in charge of the royal palace and governed the country.

22 Everything else about Uzziah, from beginning to end, is recorded by the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz. 23 Uzziah lay down in death with his ancestors and was buried with them in a field containing tombs that belonged to the kings. People said, “He had a skin disease.” His son Jotham succeeded him as king.

Revelation 13

The Beast from the Sea

13 I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns, seven heads, and ten crowns on its horns. There were insulting names on its heads. The beast that I saw was like a leopard. Its feet were like bear’s feet. Its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. The serpent gave its power, kingdom, and far-reaching authority to the beast. One of the beast’s heads looked like it had a fatal wound, but its fatal wound was healed.

All the people of the world were amazed and followed the beast. They worshiped the serpent because it had given authority to the beast. They also worshiped the beast and said, “Who is like the beast? Who can fight a war with it?” The beast was allowed to speak arrogant and insulting things. It was given authority to act for 42 months. It opened its mouth to insult God, to insult his name and his tent—those who are living in heaven. It was allowed to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. Everyone living on earth will worship it, everyone whose name is not written in the Book of Life. That book belongs to the lamb who was slaughtered before the creation of the world.

If anyone has ears, let him listen:

10 If anyone is taken prisoner, he must go to prison.
If anyone is killed with a sword, with a sword he must be killed.

In this situation God’s holy people need endurance and confidence.

The Beast from the Earth

11 I saw another beast come from the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb. It talked like a serpent. 12 The second beast uses all the authority of the first beast in its presence. The second beast makes the earth and those living on it worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. 13 The second beast performs spectacular signs. It even makes fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people. 14 It deceives those living on earth with the signs that it is allowed to do in front of the first beast. It tells those living on earth to make a statue for the beast who was wounded by a sword and yet lived.

15 The second beast was allowed to put breath into the statue of the first beast. Then the statue of the first beast could talk and put to death whoever would not worship it. 16 The second beast forces all people—important and unimportant people, rich and poor people, free people and slaves—to be branded on their right hands or on their foreheads. 17 It does this so that no one may buy or sell unless he has the brand, which is the beast’s name or the number of its name.

18 In this situation wisdom is needed. Let the person who has insight figure out the number of the beast, because it is a human number.[a] The beast’s number is 666.

Zechariah 9

The Lord Protects His House

This is the divine revelation.

The word of Yahweh is against the land of Hadrach
    and will rest on Damascus
and also Hamath, which borders on it,
and Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.
(The eyes of humanity and of all the tribes of Israel are on Yahweh.)[a]

Tyre built itself a fortress.
It piled up silver like dust
and gold like mud in the streets.
Adonay will take away its possessions.
He will throw its wealth into the sea
        and burn the city down.
Ashkelon will see this and be afraid.
Gaza will also be in great pain,
also Ekron, because its hope will fade.
            Gaza will lose its king.
Ashkelon will no longer be lived in.
A mixed race will live in Ashdod,
and I will cut off the Philistines’ arrogance.
I will remove the blood from their mouths
and the disgusting things from between their teeth.
Then only a few of them will be left for our Elohim
            like a tribe in Judah,
and Ekron will be like a Jebusite.
I will camp in front of my house
as a guard against those who come and go.
No oppressors will pass through them,
because I have seen it with my own eyes.[b]

The Lord Sends His King

Rejoice with all your heart, people of Zion!
Shout in triumph, people of Jerusalem!
Look! Your Melek is coming to you:
    He is righteous and victorious.
He is humble and rides on a donkey,
on a colt, a young pack animal.
10 He[c] will make sure there are no chariots in Ephraim
    or war horses in Jerusalem.
There will be no battle bows.
He will announce peace to the nations.
He will rule from sea to sea
and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.

11 I will set your captives free from the waterless pit
because of the blood that sealed my promise[d] to you.
12 Return to your fortress, you captives who have hope.
Today I tell you that I will return to you double blessings.
13 I will bend Judah as my bow
and draw my bow with Ephraim as its arrow.
I will stir up your people, Zion, against your people, Greece,
and I will use you like a warrior’s sword.

14 Yahweh will appear over them,
and his arrow will go out like lightning.
Adonay Yahweh will blow the ram’s horn
and will march in the storms from the south.
15 Yahweh Tsebaoth will defend them.
They will destroy and trample the stones used in slings.
They will drink and shout as if they were drunk.
They will be filled like a sacrificial bowl
used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.
16 On that day Yahweh their Elohim will rescue them
as the flock of his people.
They will certainly sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.
17 They will be beautiful and lovely.[e]
Young men will prosper on grain,
and young women will prosper on new wine.

John 12

Mary Prepares Jesus’ Body for the Tomb(A)

12 Six days before Passover, Yeshua arrived in Bethany. Lazarus, whom Yeshua had brought back to life, lived there. Dinner was prepared for Yeshua in Bethany. Martha served the dinner, and Lazarus was one of the people eating with Yeshua.

Mary took a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard and poured it on Yeshua’s feet. Then she dried his feet with her hair. The fragrance of the perfume filled the house.

One of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray him, asked, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for a high price and the money given to the poor?” (Judas didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and carried the contributions.) Yeshua said to Judas, “Leave her alone! She has done this to prepare me for the day I will be placed in a tomb. You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me with you.”

A large crowd of Jews found out that Yeshua was in Bethany. So they went there not only to see Yeshua but also to see Lazarus, whom Yeshua had brought back to life. 10 The chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too. 11 Lazarus was the reason why many people were leaving the Jews and believing in Yeshua.

The King Comes to Jerusalem(B)

12 On the next day the large crowd that had come to the Passover festival heard that Yeshua was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took palm branches and went to meet him. They were shouting,

“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord,
        the king of Israel!”

14 Yeshua obtained a donkey and sat on it, as Scripture says:

15 “Don’t be afraid, people of Zion!
    Your king is coming.
He is riding on a donkey’s colt.”

16 At first Yeshua’s disciples didn’t know what these prophecies meant. However, when Yeshua was glorified, the disciples remembered that these prophecies had been written about him. The disciples remembered that they had taken part in fulfilling the prophecies.

17 The people who had been with Yeshua when he called Lazarus from the tomb and brought him back to life reported what they had seen. 18 Because the crowd heard that Yeshua had performed this miracle, they came to meet him.

19 The Pharisees said to each other, “This is getting us nowhere. Look! The whole world is following him!”

Some Greeks Ask to See Jesus

20 Some Greeks were among those who came to worship during the Passover festival. 21 They went to Philip (who was from Bethsaida in Galilee) and told him, “Sir, we would like to meet Yeshua.” 22 Philip told Andrew, and they told Yeshua.

23 Yeshua replied to them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I can guarantee this truth: A single grain of wheat doesn’t produce anything unless it is planted in the ground and dies. If it dies, it will produce a lot of grain. 25 Those who love their lives will destroy them, and those who hate their lives in this world will guard them for everlasting life. 26 Those who serve me must follow me. My servants will be with me wherever I will be. If people serve me, the Father will honor them.

27 “I am too deeply troubled now to know how to express my feelings. Should I say, ‘Father, save me from this time of suffering’? No! I came for this time of suffering. 28 Father, give glory to your name.”

A voice from heaven said, “I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again.”

29 The crowd standing there heard the voice and said that it had thundered. Others in the crowd said that an angel had talked to him. 30 Yeshua replied, “That voice wasn’t for my benefit but for yours.

31 “This world is being judged now. The ruler of this world will be thrown out now. 32 When I have been lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people toward me.” 33 By saying this, he indicated how he was going to die.

34 The crowd responded to him, “We have heard from the Scriptures that the Messiah will remain here forever. So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up from the earth’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Yeshua answered the crowd, “The light will still be with you for a little while. Walk while you have light so that darkness won’t defeat you. Those who walk in the dark don’t know where they’re going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light so that you will become people whose lives show the light.”

After Yeshua had said this, he was concealed as he left. 37 Although they had seen Yeshua perform so many miracles, they wouldn’t believe in him. 38 In this way the words of the prophet Isaiah came true:

“Lord, who has believed our message?
To whom has the Lord’s power been revealed?”

39 So the people couldn’t believe because, as Isaiah also said,

40 “God blinded them
    and made them close-minded
so that their eyes don’t see
            and their minds don’t understand.
And they never turn to me for healing!”

41 Isaiah said this because he had seen Yeshua’s glory and had spoken about him.

42 Many rulers believed in Yeshua. However, they wouldn’t admit it publicly because the Pharisees would have thrown them out of the synagogue. 43 They were more concerned about what people thought of them than about what God thought of them.

44 Then Yeshua said loudly, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me. 45 Whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. 46 I am the light that has come into the world so that everyone who believes in me will not live in the dark. 47 If anyone hears my words and doesn’t follow them, I don’t condemn them. I didn’t come to condemn the world but to save the world. 48 Those who reject me by not accepting what I say have a judge appointed for them. The words that I have spoken will judge them on the last day. 49 I have not spoken on my own. Instead, the Father who sent me told me what I should say and how I should say it. 50 I know that what he commands is eternal life. Whatever I say is what the Father told me to say.”
