Moses’ Last Words to Israel

33 Moses the man of God prayed before his death that good would come to the people of Israel. He said, “The Lord came from Sinai. He came upon us from Seir. He shined from Mount Paran. He came among 10,000 holy ones. He came with fire at His right hand. Yes, He loves His people. All Your holy ones are in Your hand. They followed in Your steps. They receive Your Word. Moses gave us the Law, which belongs to the people of Jacob. The Lord was King in Jeshurun, when the leaders of the people were gathered, all the families of Israel together.

“May Reuben live and not die. Do not let his men be few.”

About Judah he said, “O Lord, hear the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people. He fought for them with his hands. Give him help against those who fight against him.”

About Levi he said, “Let Your Thummim and Your Urim belong to Your man of God. You proved him at Massah, and at the waters of Meribah. He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not think of them.’ He kept himself apart from his brothers, and his own children. Yes, they obeyed Your Word and kept Your agreement. 10 They will teach Your Laws to Jacob. They will teach Your Laws to Israel. They will put special perfume before You, and whole burnt gifts on Your altar. 11 O Lord, give him good things. Receive the work of his hands. Crush those who go against him and those who hate him, so they may not get up again.”

12 About Benjamin he said, “May the one the Lord loves live by Him and be safe. The Lord covers him all the day long. And he lives between His shoulders.”

13 About Joseph he said, “May the Lord bring good to his land, with the best gifts from heaven above, with water on the grass in the early morning, and from the deep waters below, 14 with the best things from the sun, and the best foods of the months. 15 May the Lord bring good to his land with the best things of the old mountains, and the best things of the hills that last forever, 16 with the best things of the earth and all that is in it, and the favor of Him Who lived in the bush. Let these gifts come upon the head of Joseph, upon the crown of the head of the one who is ruler among his brothers. 17 His great power is like the first-born of his bull. His horns are like the horns of the wild bull. With them he will push all the nations to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 About Zebulun he said, “Be full of joy, Zebulun, in your going out. Be full of joy, Issachar, in your tents. 19 They will call the people to the mountain. There they will give gifts that are right with God. For they will take out the riches of the seas and the hidden riches of the sand.”

20 About Gad he said, “Happy is the one who gives much land to Gad! He lies down like a lion, and tears the arm and the crown of the head. 21 He chose the best part for himself, for that was the ruler’s share. He came with the leaders of the people. He did what the Lord wanted him to do. And he obeyed His Law with Israel.”

22 About Dan he said, “Dan is a young lion, that jumps out from Bashan.”

23 About Naphtali he said, “O Naphtali, filled with favor, and full of the good things of the Lord, take the sea and the south for your own.”

24 About Asher he said, “May Asher be given more than the other sons. May he be favored by his brothers. Let him put his foot in oil. 25 Your locks will be iron and brass. And your strength will last like your days.

26 “There is none like the God of Jeshurun. He comes through the heavens to help you, through the sky in His great power. 27 The God Who lives forever is your safe place. His arms are always under you. He drove away from in front of you those who hate you, and said, ‘Destroy!’ 28 So Israel lives in a safe place, the well of Jacob is safe, in a land of grain and new wine. Rain falls from His heavens. 29 Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a nation saved by the Lord! He is the battle-covering Who helps you. He is the sword of your great power. So those who hate you will be afraid in front of you. And you will walk upon their high places.”

The Death of Moses

34 Now Moses went up from the valleys of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, beside Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the sea in the west, the Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your children.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not go there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, as the Word of the Lord said. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, beside Beth-peor. But no man knows where he is buried to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. But his eyes were not weak, and his strength had not left him. The children of Israel cried for Moses in the valley of Moab for thirty days. Then the days of crying and sorrow for Moses came to an end.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel listened to him and did what the Lord had told Moses. 10 There has never been another man who speaks for God in Israel like Moses. The Lord knew him face to face. 11 There has never been another like him who has done all the powerful works the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land. 12 There has never been another who has shown all the great power and all the great fear which Moses did for all Israel to see.

Psalm 119:145-176

145 I cried with all my heart. Answer me, O Lord! I will keep Your Law. 146 I cried to You. Save me, and I will keep Your Word. 147 I rise before the morning comes and cry for help. I have put my hope in Your Word. 148 My eyes wait for the night hours, so I may think about Your Word. 149 Hear my voice because of Your loving-kindness. O Lord, give me new life again because of Your Law. 150 Those who follow sinful ways come near. But they are far from Your Law. 151 You are near, O Lord. And all of Your Word is truth. 152 I learned from Your Law long ago that You made it to last forever.

153 Look upon my suffering and take me from it. For I do not forget Your Law. 154 Stand by me and set me free. Give me life again because of Your Word. 155 Your saving help is far from the sinful, for they do not look to Your Law. 156 Your loving-kindness is great, O Lord. Give me life again because of Your Law. 157 There are many who hate me and make it hard for me. Yet I do not turn from Your Law. 158 I look with hate on those who cannot be trusted, because they do not keep Your Word. 159 Think about how I love Your Law. Give me life again, O Lord, because of Your loving-kindness. 160 All of Your Word is truth, and every one of Your laws, which are always right, will last forever.

161 Rulers make it hard for me for no reason, but my heart honors Your Words with fear. 162 I am made happy by Your Word, like one who finds great riches. 163 I hate what is false, but I love Your Law. 164 I praise You seven times a day, because Your Law is right. 165 Those who love Your Law have great peace, and nothing will cause them to be hurt in their spirit. 166 I hope for Your saving power, O Lord, and I follow Your Word. 167 I obey Your Law, for I love it very much. 168 I obey Your Word and Laws, for You know all my ways.

169 Let my cry come to You, O Lord. Give me understanding because of Your Word. 170 Let my prayer come to You. Help me because of Your Word. 171 May praise come from my lips, for You teach me Your Law. 172 May my tongue sing about Your Word, for all of Your Word is right and good. 173 May Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen Your Law. 174 I have much desire for Your saving power, O Lord. Your Law is my joy. 175 Let me live so I may praise You, and let Your Law help me. 176 I have gone from the way like a lost sheep. Look for Your servant, for I do not forget Your Word.

Isaiah 60

60 “Rise up and shine, for your light has come. The shining-greatness of the Lord has risen upon you. For see, darkness will cover the earth. Much darkness will cover the people. But the Lord will rise upon you, and His shining-greatness will be seen upon you. Nations will come to your light. And kings will see the shining-greatness of the Lord on you.

“Lift up your eyes and look around you, and see. They all gather together. They come to you. Your sons will come from far away, and your daughters will be carried in the arms. Then you will see and shine with joy. Your heart will be glad and full of joy, because the riches of the sea will be turned to you. And the riches of the nations will come to you. Many camels will cover your land, the young camels of Midian and Ephah. All those from Sheba will come. They will bring gold and special perfume, and will carry good news of the praises of the Lord. All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you. The male sheep of Nebaioth will be ready for your need. They will be received on My altar. And I will make My house beautiful. Who are these who fly like a cloud, and like doves to their windows? For sure the islands will wait for Me. And the ships of Tarshish will come first, to bring your sons from far away, and their silver and gold with them. They will come because of the name of the Lord your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, for He has brought great honor to you.

10 “People from strange lands will build up your walls, and their kings will help you. For I destroyed you in My anger, but in My favor I have had loving-pity on you. 11 Your gates will always be open. They will not be closed day or night, so that men may bring the riches of the nations to you with the kings leading the way. 12 For the nation which does not serve you will be destroyed. Those nations will all be destroyed. 13 The beauty of Lebanon will come to you. The juniper, the box tree and the cypress will be brought to make My holy place beautiful. I will make the place of My feet a beautiful place. 14 The sons of those who made it hard for you will come bowing to you. All those who hated you will bow down at your feet. And they will call you the City of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “You have been left and hated, with no one passing through. But I will make you a pride forever, a joy for all your children’s children. 16 You will drink the milk of nations. You will drink from the breast of kings. Then you will know that I, the Lord, am the One Who saves you, and the One Who bought you and made you free, the Powerful One of Jacob. 17 Instead of brass, I will bring gold. Instead of iron, I will bring silver. Instead of wood, I will bring brass. And instead of stones, I will bring iron. I will make peace your leader, and what is right and good will be your boss. 18 Fighting will not be heard again in your land. Nothing within your land will be destroyed. You will call your walls Saving Power and your gates Praise. 19 No more will the sun be your light during the day, and the moon during the night. But the Lord will be your light forever and your God will be your shining-greatness. 20 Your sun will set no more, and your moon will not become less. For the Lord will be your light forever and ever, and the days of your sorrow will end. 21 Then all your people will be right with God. They will have the land forever. They are the branch I planted, the work of My hands, that I may be honored. 22 The smallest one will become a family of a thousand. And the least one will become a powerful nation. I, the Lord, will make it happen in its time.”

Matthew 8

The Healing of a Man with a Bad Skin Disease (A)

Jesus came down from the mountain. Many people followed Him. A man with a bad skin disease came and got down before Him and worshiped Him. He said, “Lord, if You will, You can heal me!” Then Jesus put His hand on him and said, “I will. You are healed!” At once the man was healed. Jesus said to him, “Go now, but tell no one. Let the religious leader see you. Give the gift in worship that Moses told you to give. This will show them you have been healed.” (B)

Healing of the Captain’s Servant (C)

Jesus came to the city of Capernaum. A captain of the army came to Him. He asked for help, saying, “Lord, my servant is sick in bed. He is not able to move his body. He is in much pain.” Jesus said to the captain, “I will come and heal him.” The captain said, “Lord, I am not good enough for You to come to my house. Only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. I am a man who works for someone else and I have men working under me. I say to this man, ‘Go!’ and he goes. I say to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, He was surprised and wondered about it. He said to those who followed Him, “For sure, I tell you, I have not found so much faith in the Jewish nation. 11 I say to you, many people will come from the east and from the west. They will sit down with Abraham and with Isaac and with Jacob in the holy nation of heaven. 12 But those who should have belonged to the holy nation of heaven will be thrown out into outer darkness, where there will be crying and grinding of teeth.” 13 Jesus said to the captain, “Go your way. It is done for you even as you had faith to believe.” The servant was healed at that time.

Peter’s Mother-In-Law Healed (D)

14 Jesus came to Peter’s house. He saw Peter’s wife’s mother in bed. She was very sick. 15 He touched her hand and the sickness left her. She got up and cared for Jesus.

Many People Are Healed (E)

16 That evening they brought to Jesus many people who had demons in them. The demons were put out when Jesus spoke to them. All the sick people were healed. 17 It happened as the early preacher Isaiah said it would happen. He said, “He took on Himself our sickness and carried away our diseases.” (F)

Testing Some Followers (G)

18 Jesus saw many people and told them to go to the other side of the lake. 19 A teacher of the Law came to Jesus. He said, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes. Birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”

21 Another of His followers said to Him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” 22 Jesus said to him, “Follow Me. Let the people who are dead bury their own dead.”

The Wind and Waves Obey Jesus (H)

23 Jesus got into a boat. His followers followed Him. 24 At once a bad storm came over the lake. The waves were covering the boat. Jesus was sleeping. 25 His followers went to Him and called, “Help us, Lord, or we will die!” 26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then He stood up. He spoke sharp words to the wind and the waves. Then the wind stopped blowing. 27 Then men were surprised and wondered about it. They said, “What kind of a man is He? Even the winds and the waves obey Him.”

Demons Ask Jesus to Let Them Live in Pigs (I)

28 Jesus came to the other side of the lake into the country of the Gadarenes. Two men came to Him from among the graves. They had demons in them and were very wild men. They were so bad that no one would go near them. 29 They called out, saying, “What do You want of us, You Son of God? Have You come here to make us suffer before it is our time to suffer?”

30 A long way from there many pigs were eating. 31 The demons begged Jesus, saying, “If You put us out, send us into the pigs.” 32 Jesus said to the demons, “Go!” They came out of the men and went into the pigs. At once the pigs ran down the mountain side. They fell into the water and died.

33 The men who cared for the pigs ran fast into the city and told everything. They told what happened to the men who had the demons. 34 Every person in the city came to meet Jesus. When they saw Jesus, they asked Him to leave their country.
