Aaron and His Sons Set Apart for Their Work
8 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Take Aaron and his sons, and the clothing, the oil for holy use, the bull for the sin gift, the two rams and the basket of bread without yeast. 3 And gather together all the people at the door of the meeting tent.” 4 So Moses did just as the Lord told him. The people were gathered together at the door of the meeting tent. 5 Moses said to the people, “This is what the Lord has said to do.”
6 Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. 7 He dressed him with the coat, the belt, the long piece of clothing, and the linen vest. He tied the well-made rope of the linen vest, to keep his clothing in place. 8 Then he put the breast-piece on him. And he put the Urim and the Thummim into the breast-piece. 9 He put the head covering on his head. And on the front of it he put the gold plate, the holy crown, just as the Lord had told Moses.
10 Then Moses took the oil for holy use and poured it on the meeting tent and all that was in it, and made them holy. 11 He put some of it on the altar seven times. He poured this oil on the altar and all its objects, and the washing pot and its base, to make them holy. 12 And he poured some of the oil for holy use on Aaron’s head, to make him holy. 13 Then Moses had Aaron’s sons come near and dressed them with coats, belts and head coverings, just as the Lord had told Moses.
14 Moses brought the bull of the sin gift. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin gift. 15 Then Moses killed it. He took some of the blood, and put it around on the horns of the altar with his finger, to make the altar clean. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar to make it holy. 16 He took all the fat that was on the inside parts, and the part that was on the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat. And Moses burned them on the altar. 17 But the bull and its skin, its meat and its waste, he burned in the fire away from the tents, just as the Lord had told Moses.
18 Moses brought the ram of the burnt gift. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the sheep. 19 Then Moses killed it and put the blood around on the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces. And Moses burned the head, the pieces, and the fat. 21 After he had washed the inside parts and the legs with water, Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt gift for a pleasing smell. It was a gift by fire to the Lord, just as the Lord had told Moses. 22 Then Moses brought the ram, the ram for setting them apart. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 And Moses killed it, took some of its blood, and put it on the bottom of Aaron’s right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot. 24 Then he had Aaron’s sons come near. Moses put some of the blood on the bottom of their right ear, the thumb of their right hand, and the big toe of their right foot. Then Moses put the rest of the blood around on the altar. 25 He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat that was on the inside parts, the part that is on the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh. 26 From the basket of bread made without yeast that was before the Lord, he took one loaf without yeast, and one loaf of bread mixed with oil, and one piece of hard bread. And he put them on the fat parts and the right thigh. 27 He put all these on the hands of Aaron and his sons, and waved them for a wave gift before the Lord. 28 Then Moses took these things from their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt gift. It was a gift to set them apart. It was a pleasing smell, a gift by fire to the Lord. 29 Moses took the breast of the ram also. He gave it as a wave gift before the Lord. It was Moses’ part of the ram for setting Aaron and his sons apart, just as the Lord had told Moses.
30 Moses took some of the oil for holy use and some of the blood that was on the altar. He put it on Aaron and his clothing, and on his sons and their clothing. So Aaron and his clothing and his sons and their clothing were set apart.
31 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the door of the meeting tent. And eat it there with the bread which is in the basket that was set apart as an offering. Just as I said, ‘Aaron and his sons will eat it.’ 32 Burn in the fire what is left of the flesh and the bread. 33 Do not go outside the door of the meeting tent for seven days, until the time is over for you to be set apart. For it will take seven days to set you apart. 34 The Lord has told us to do what has been done today, to take away your sins. 35 Stay day and night at the door of the meeting tent for seven days. Do what the Lord has told you to do, so you will not die. For this is what I have been told.” 36 So Aaron and his sons did all that the Lord had told them to do by Moses.
Thanks to God for the Way He Judges
9 I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart. I will tell of all the great things You have done. 2 I will be glad and full of joy because of You. I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. 3 When those who hate me turn away, they fall and are lost from You. 4 For You have stood by my right actions. You sit on Your throne, and are right in how You judge. 5 You have spoken sharp words to the nations and have destroyed the sinful. You have thrown out their name forever and ever. 6 Those who fight against You are finished forever. You have destroyed their cities. They will be remembered no more. 7 But the Lord lives forever. He has set up His throne to say who is guilty or not. 8 He will punish the world by what is right. He will be fair as He rules the people.
9 The Lord also keeps safe those who suffer. He is a safe place in times of trouble. 10 Those who know Your name will put their trust in You. For You, O Lord, have never left alone those who look for You. 11 Sing praises to the Lord, Who lives in Zion! Tell all the nations what He has done! 12 For He Who punishes for the blood of another remembers them. He does not forget the cry of those who suffer. 13 Have pity on me, O Lord! See how I suffer from those who hate me, You Who have lifted me up from the gates of death, 14 that I may tell of all Your praises in the gates of the people of Zion. There I will be full of joy because You save.
15 The nations have fallen into the hole they have dug. Their own feet have been caught in the net they have hidden. 16 The Lord has made Himself known. He is fair in His Law. The sinful trap themselves by the work of their own hands. 17 The sinful, all the nations that forget God, will be turned back into the grave.
18 But those in need will not always be forgotten. The hope of the poor will not be lost forever. 19 Rise up, O Lord! Do not let man win the fight against You. Let the nations come to You and be judged. 20 Make them afraid, O Lord. Let the nations know they are only men.
23 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, think about what is in front of you. 2 Put a knife to your neck if you are a man who is given to much eating. 3 Do not desire his special foods, for they are put there for no good reason.
4 Do not work hard to be rich. Stop trying to get things for yourself. 5 When you set your eyes upon it, it is gone. For sure, riches make themselves wings like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.
6 Do not eat the bread of a man who thinks only about himself. Do not have a desire for his fine food. 7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you. 8 You will spit up the piece of food you have eaten, and waste your good words.
9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will hate the wisdom of your words.
10 Do not take away the old land-mark, or go into the fields of those without a father. 11 For the One Who saves them is strong. He will stand by them and give them help against you. 12 Open your heart to teaching, and your ears to words of much learning.
13 Do not keep from punishing the child if he needs it. If you beat him with the stick, he will not die. 14 Beat him with the stick, and save his soul from hell.
15 My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will be glad also. 16 My heart will be full of joy when your lips speak what is right.
17 Do not let your heart be jealous of sinners, but live in the fear of the Lord always. 18 For sure there is a future and your hope will not be cut off. 19 Listen, my son, and be wise. Lead your heart in the way. 20 Do not be with those who drink too much wine or eat too much meat. 21 For the man who drinks too much or eats too much will become poor, and much sleep will dress a man in torn clothes.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not hate your mother when she is old. 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom and teaching and understanding.
24 The father of one who is right with God will have much joy. He who has a wise son will be glad in him. 25 Let your father and mother be glad, and let her who gave birth to you be full of joy.
26 Give me your heart, my son. Let your eyes find joy in my ways. 27 For a woman who sells the use of her body is like a deep hole. A sinful woman is a narrow well. 28 She lies in wait as a robber, and makes many more men not faithful.
29 Who has trouble? Who has sorrow? Who is fighting? Who is complaining? Who is hurt without a reason? Who has eyes that have become red? 30 Those who stay a long time over wine. Those who go to taste mixed wine. 31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it shines in the cup, when it is smooth in going down. 32 In the end it bites like a snake. It stings like the bite of a snake with poison. 33 Your eyes will see strange things. Your mind will say the wrong things. 34 And you will be like one who lies down in the center of the sea, or like one who lies above a ship’s sail. 35 “They hit me, but I was not hurt. They beat me, but I did not know it. When will I wake up? I will look for another drink.”
2 Christian brothers, you know that my visit with you was not wasted. 2 Just before we came to you, we had been in the city of Philippi. You know how they worked against us and made us suffer. But God helped us preach the Good News to you without fear, even while many people hated us and made it hard for us. 3 You remember what we said to you was true. We had no wrong desire in teaching you. We did not try to fool you. 4 God has allowed us to be trusted with the Good News. Because of this, we preach it to please God, not man. God tests and proves our hearts. 5 You know we never used smooth-sounding words. God knows we never tried to get money from you by preaching. 6 We never looked for thanks from men, not from you or from anyone else. But because we were missionaries of Christ, we could have asked you to do much for us. 7 Instead, we were gentle when we came to you. We were like a mother caring for her children. 8 We had such a strong desire to help you that we were happy to give you the Good News. Because we loved you so much, we were ready to give you our own lives also. 9 You remember, Christian brothers, we worked night and day for our food and clothes while we preached the Good News to you. We did not want to make it hard for you. 10 You know, and so does God, how pure and right and without blame we were among you who believe. 11 As a father helps his children, you know how we wanted to help you and give you comfort. We told you with strong words 12 that you should live to please God. He is the One Who chose you to come into His holy nation and to share His shining-greatness.
13 We always thank God that when you heard the Word of God from us, you believed it. You did not receive it as from men, but you received it as the Word of God. That is what it is. It is at work in the lives of you who believe. 14 Christian brothers, you became just like the churches in the country of Judea. You had to suffer from the men in your country as those churches had to suffer from the Jews. 15 It was the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus and the early preachers. The Jews made it hard for us and made us leave. They do not please God and are working against all men. 16 They tried to keep us from preaching the Good News to the people who are not Jews. The Jews do not want them saved from the punishment of sin. The lives of the Jews are full of more sin all the time. But now God’s anger has come to them at last.
17 Christian brothers, because we have not been able to be with you, our hearts have been with you. We have wanted very much to see you. 18 We wanted to come to you. I, Paul, have tried to come to you more than once but Satan kept us from coming. 19 Who is our hope or joy or crown of happiness? It is you, when you stand before our Lord Jesus Christ when He comes again. 20 You are our pride and joy.
