M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Israel at Mount Sinai
19 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt, on the same day they came into the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 When they set out from Rephidim, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness. Israel camped there before the mountain.
3 Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the children of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you up on eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will faithfully obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you will be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.
9 The Lord said to Moses, “Indeed, I am going to come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and always believe in you.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and have them wash their clothes, 11 and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai. 12 You shall set boundaries for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves so that you not go up onto the mountain or touch its border. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death. 13 No hand will touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through, whether it be beast or man. He shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.”
14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day. Do not go near your wives.”
16 So on the third day, in the morning, there was thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet. All the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was completely covered in smoke because the Lord had descended upon it in fire, and the smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him with a voice.[a]
20 The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, lest they force their way to the Lord to look, and many of them perish. 22 Let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break through against them.”
23 Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, ‘Set boundaries around the mountain, and sanctify it.’ ”
24 Then the Lord said to him, “Go, get down, and come up, you and Aaron with you, but do not let the priests and the people force their way through to come up to the Lord, lest He break through against them.”
25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)
22 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, drew near. 2 And the chief priests and scribes were seeking how to kill Jesus, for they feared the people. 3 Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. 4 He went and discussed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray Him to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6 He fully consented and searched for an opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowds.
The Preparation of the Passover(B)
7 Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came, when the Passover lamb must be killed. 8 He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat it.”
9 They said to Him, “Where will You have us prepare it?”
10 He said to them, “Now, as you enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you there. Follow him into the house which he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 He will show you a large furnished upper room. Prepare there.”
13 They went and found it as He had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
The Lord’s Supper(C)
14 When the hour had come, He and the twelve apostles with Him sat down. 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will never eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 And He took the cup and gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 Then He took the bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 In like manner, He took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood which is shed for you. 21 But see the hand of him who betrays Me is with Me at the table. 22 Indeed, the Son of Man goes as it has been determined. But woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 They began to inquire among themselves which of them it was who would do this.
The Dispute About Greatness
24 There was also rivalry among them concerning which of them was to be counted the greatest. 25 He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But you are not so. Instead, let him who is greatest among you be as the younger, and he who rules as he who serves. 27 For who is greater: he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? But I am among you as He who serves. 28 You are those who have continued with Me in My trials. 29 And I appoint to you a kingdom as My Father has appointed one to Me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Peter’s Denial Foretold
31 Then the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have repented, strengthen your brothers.”
33 He said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You to prison and to death.”
34 He said, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Purse, Bag, and Sword
35 Then He said to them, “When I sent you without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
They said, “Nothing.”
36 He said to them, “But now, let him who has a purse take it and also a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I tell you, what is written must yet be accomplished in Me, ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’[a] Indeed, what is written concerning Me has a fulfillment.”
38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer on the Mount of Olives(D)
39 According to His custom, He came out and went to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him. 40 When He came there, He said to them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose from prayer and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you fall into temptation.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus(E)
47 While He was yet speaking, a crowd came. And he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When those who were around Him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, “This is enough!” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple guard, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a rebel? 53 Daily, while I was with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!”
Peter’s Denial of Jesus(F)
54 Then they arrested Him, and led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 Then a servant girl saw him as he sat near the fire, and gazed at him, and said, “This man was with Him.”
57 But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 About an hour later another man firmly declared, “Certainly, this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” Immediately, while he was yet speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.
The Mocking and Whipping of Jesus(G)
63 The men who guarded Jesus mocked Him and whipped Him. 64 When they had blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, “Prophesy! Who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Before the Council(H)
66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him away to their council, saying, 67 “Are You the Christ? Tell us!”
He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I also question you, you will not answer Me or release Me. 69 From now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70 They all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
He said to them, “You truly say that I am.”
71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it from His own mouth.”
37 “At this also my heart trembles
and moves out of its place.
2 Hear attentively the thunder of His voice,
and the sound that goes out of His mouth.
3 He lets it loose under the whole heaven,
and His lightning unto the ends of the earth.
4 After it a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice,
and He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice;
He does great things that we cannot comprehend.
6 For He says to the snow, ‘Come on the earth,’
likewise to the gentle rain and to the heavy rain of His strength.
7 He seals up the hand of every man,
that all men may know His work.
8 Then the beasts go into dens
and remain in their places.
9 Out of the south comes the whirlwind,
and cold out of the north.
10 By the breath of God frost is given,
and the broad waters are frozen.
11 Also He loads the thick clouds with moisture;
He scatters His bright clouds,
12 and they are turned about by His guidance,
that they may do whatever He commands them
upon the face of the inhabited earth.
13 He causes it to come, whether for correction,
or for His land or for mercy.
14 “Listen to this, Job; stand still
and consider the wondrous works of God.
15 Do you know when God dispatches them
and causes the light of His cloud to shine?
16 Do you know how the clouds are balanced,
the wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
17 How your garments are warm,
when He quiets the earth by the south wind?
18 Have you, with Him, spread out the sky,
which is strong and is like a molded mirror?
19 “Teach us what we will say to Him,
for we cannot prepare our speech because of the darkness.
20 Will it be told Him that I speak?
If a man speaks, surely he will be swallowed up.
21 Now men do not see the bright light
which is in the clouds,
but the wind passes and cleanses them.
22 Fair weather comes out of the north;
with God is terrible majesty.
23 Concerning the Almighty, we cannot find Him out;
He is excellent in power, and in judgment,
and in much righteousness He will not oppress.
24 Men therefore fear Him;
He shows no partiality to those who are wise in heart.”
7 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Paul’s Joy at the Church’s Repentance
2 Accept us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, and we have defrauded no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you, for I have said before that you are in our hearts, so that we would die or live with you. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you; great is my boasting of you. I am filled with comfort, and I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.
5 For when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, and we were troubled on every side. On the outside were conflicts; on the inside were fears. 6 Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us through the coming of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, when he told us about your sincere desire, your mourning, and your zeal toward me, so that I rejoiced even more.
8 Though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I perceive that this same letter has caused you sorrow, though only for a while. 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorrowful in a godly way, that you might not suffer loss in any way through us. 10 Godly sorrow produces repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For observe this very thing, which you sorrowed in a godly way: What carefulness it produced in you, what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what intense desire, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In all things you have proven yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So though I wrote to you, I did it not because of him who had done the wrong, nor because of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might be evident to you. 13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort.
Yes, and we were exceedingly the more joyful for the sake of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. 14 So I am not ashamed if I have boasted of anything to him regarding you. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even our boasting in the presence of Titus is found to be true. 15 Now his affection abounds all the more toward you, as he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him. 16 Therefore I rejoice that I have confidence in you in everything.
