Chapter 15

Then Moses and the Israelites sang(A) this song to the Lord:[a]

I will sing to the Lord, for he is gloriously triumphant;
    horse and chariot he has cast into the sea.
My strength and my refuge is the Lord,
    and he has become my savior.(B)
This is my God, I praise him;
    the God of my father, I extol him.
The Lord is a warrior,
    Lord is his name!
Pharaoh’s chariots and army he hurled into the sea;
    the elite of his officers were drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
The flood waters covered them,
    they sank into the depths like a stone.(C)
Your right hand, O Lord, magnificent in power,
    your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.
In your great majesty you overthrew your adversaries;
    you loosed your wrath to consume them like stubble.
At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up,
    the flowing waters stood like a mound,
    the flood waters foamed in the midst of the sea.
The enemy boasted, “I will pursue and overtake them;
    I will divide the spoils and have my fill of them;
    I will draw my sword; my hand will despoil them!”
10 When you blew with your breath, the sea covered them;
    like lead they sank in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like you among the gods, O Lord?
    Who is like you, magnificent among the holy ones?
Awe-inspiring in deeds of renown, worker of wonders,
12     when you stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them!
13 In your love[c] you led the people you redeemed;
    in your strength you guided them to your holy dwelling.
14 The peoples heard and quaked;
    anguish gripped the dwellers in Philistia.
15 Then were the chieftains of Edom dismayed,
    the nobles of Moab seized by trembling;
All the inhabitants of Canaan melted away;
16     (D)terror and dread fell upon them.
By the might of your arm they became silent like stone,
    while your people, Lord, passed over,
    while the people whom you created passed over.[d]
17 You brought them in, you planted them
    on the mountain that is your own—
The place you made the base of your throne, Lord,
    the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.
18 May the Lord reign forever and ever!

19 When Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen entered the sea, the Lord made the waters of the sea flow back upon them, though the Israelites walked on dry land through the midst of the sea.(E) 20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, while all the women went out after her with tambourines, dancing; 21 and she responded[e] to them:

Sing to the Lord, for he is gloriously triumphant;
    horse and chariot he has cast into the sea.(F)

V. The Journey in the Wilderness to Sinai

At Marah and Elim. 22 (G)Then Moses led Israel forward from the Red Sea,[f] and they marched out to the wilderness of Shur. After traveling for three days through the wilderness without finding water, 23 they arrived at Marah, where they could not drink its water, because it was too bitter. Hence this place was called Marah. 24 As the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 he cried out to the Lord, who pointed out to him a piece of wood. When he threw it into the water, the water became fresh.(H)

It was here that God, in making statutes and ordinances for them, put them to the test. 26 He said: If you listen closely to the voice of the Lord, your God, and do what is right in his eyes: if you heed his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will not afflict you with any of the diseases with which I afflicted the Egyptians;(I) for I, the Lord, am your healer.

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.(J)

Luke 18

Chapter 18

The Parable of the Persistent Widow. [a]Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.(A) He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, [b](B)because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’” The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else.(C) 10 “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’(D) 13 But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’(E) 14 I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”(F)

Saying on Children and the Kingdom. 15 [c]People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them,[d] and when the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.(G) 16 Jesus, however, called the children to himself and said, “Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”(H)

The Rich Official. 18 (I)An official asked him this question, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(J) 19 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’”(K) 21 And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth.” 22 [e](L)When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich.

On Riches and Renunciation. 24 Jesus looked at him [now sad] and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 And he said, “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God.”(M) 28 Then Peter said, “We have given up our possessions and followed you.” 29 (N)He said to them, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 who will not receive [back] an overabundant return in this present age and eternal life in the age to come.”

The Third Prediction of the Passion.(O) 31 [f]Then he took the Twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem and everything written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.[g] 32 (P)He will be handed over to the Gentiles and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon; 33 and after they have scourged him they will kill him, but on the third day he will rise.” 34 But they understood nothing of this; the word remained hidden from them and they failed to comprehend what he said.(Q)

The Healing of the Blind Beggar.(R) 35 Now as he approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, 36 and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 (S)He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David,[h] have pity on me!” 39 The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!” 40 Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.”(T) 42 Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.”(U) 43 He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.

Job 33

Chapter 33

Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse;
    listen to all my words.
Behold, now I open my mouth;
    my tongue and voice form words.
I will state directly what is in my mind,
    my lips shall speak knowledge clearly;
For the spirit of God made me,
    the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.(A)
If you are able, refute me;
    draw up your arguments and take your stand.
Look, I am like you before God,
    I too was pinched from clay.[a](B)
Therefore fear of me should not dismay you,
    nor should I weigh heavily upon you.
But you have said in my hearing,
    as I listened to the sound of your words:
“I am clean, without transgression;
    I am innocent, there is no guilt in me.(C)
10 Yet he invents pretexts against me
    and counts me as an enemy.[b](D)
11 He puts my feet in the stocks,
    watches all my paths!”(E)
12 In this you are not just, let me tell you;
    for God is greater than mortals.
13 Why, then, do you make complaint against him
    that he gives no reply to their words?(F)
14 For God does speak, once,
    even twice, though you do not see it:[c]
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,
    when deep sleep falls upon mortals
    as they slumber in their beds.
16 It is then he opens their ears
    and with a warning, terrifies them,
17 By turning mortals from acting
    and keeping pride away from a man,
18 He holds his soul from the pit,
    his life from passing to the grave.
19 Or he is chastened on a bed of pain,
    suffering continually in his bones,
20 So that to his appetite food is repulsive,
    his throat rejects the choicest nourishment.(G)
21 His flesh is wasted, it cannot be seen;
    bones, once invisible, appear;
22 His soul draws near to the pit,
    his life to the place of the dead.
23 If then there be a divine messenger,[d]
    a mediator, one out of a thousand,
    to show him what is right,
24 He will take pity on him and say,
    “Deliver him from going down to the pit;
    I have found him a ransom.”
25 Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy’s;
    he shall be again as in the days of his youth.
26 He shall pray and God will favor him;
    he shall see God’s face with rejoicing;(H)
    for he restores a person’s righteousness.
27 He shall sing before all and say,
    “I sinned and did wrong,
    yet I was not punished accordingly.
28 He delivered me from passing to the pit,
    and my life sees light.”
29 See, all these things God does,
    two, even three times, for a man,
30 Bringing back his soul from the pit
    to the light, in the light of the living.
31 Be attentive, Job, listen to me!
    Be silent and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, then answer me.
    Speak out! I should like to see you justified.
33 If not, then you listen to me;
    be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.

2 Corinthians 3

Chapter 3

[a](A)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You are our letter,[b] written on our hearts, known and read by all, [c](B)shown to be a letter of Christ administered by us, written not in ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets that are hearts of flesh.

[d]Such confidence we have through Christ toward God. Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification comes from God,(C) who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit;(D) for the letter brings death, but the Spirit gives life.[e]

Contrast with the Old Covenant. [f]Now if the ministry of death,[g] carved in letters on stone, was so glorious that the Israelites could not look intently at the face of Moses because of its glory that was going to fade,(E) how much more[h] will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in glory. 10 Indeed, what was endowed with glory has come to have no glory in this respect because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was going to fade was glorious, how much more will what endures be glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope,[i] we act very boldly 13 and not like Moses,[j] who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites could not look intently at the cessation of what was fading. 14 Rather, their thoughts were rendered dull, for to this present day[k] the same veil remains unlifted when they read the old covenant, because through Christ it is taken away. 15 To this day, in fact, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts,(F) 16 but whenever a person turns to the Lord the veil is removed.(G) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,[l] and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 [m]All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.(H)
