Judah and Tamar
38 At that time Judah left his brothers and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shua, and he took her and had relations with her. 3 She conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. 5 She again conceived and bore a son and called his name Shelah. He was at Kezib when she bore him.
6 Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord killed him.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Go have relations with your brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up descendants for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the descendant would not be his, so when he had relations with his brother’s wife, he let his semen go on the ground, so that he would not give a descendant to his brother. 10 What he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.
11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow at your father’s house until Shelah my son grows up.” For he thought, “He may die also, just as his brothers did.” So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.
12 As time went on, the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died. After Judah was consoled, he went up to his sheepshearers in Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 It was told to Tamar, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 She took off her widow’s clothing, covered herself with a veil, wrapped herself up, and sat in an open place, which is by the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as his wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face. 16 He turned to her by the road and said, “Come now, let me have relations with you” (for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law).
And she said, “What will you give me, so that you may have relations with me?”
17 And he said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.”
And she said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”
18 And he said, “What pledge should I give you?”
And she said, “Your signet, your bracelets, and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and had relations with her, and she conceived by him. 19 She arose and went away, and taking off her veil, she put on her widow’s clothing.
20 Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he could not find her. 21 Then he asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was at Enaim by the road?”
And they said, “There was no prostitute in this place.”
22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no cult prostitute in this place.”
23 Judah replied, “Let her keep them for herself, or we shall be laughed at. I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.”
24 After about three months, it was told Judah, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has turned to prostitution, and what is more, as a result of prostitution she is pregnant.”
Then Judah said, “Bring her forth, and let her be burned!”
25 When she was brought forth, she sent word to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong am I with child.” And she said, “Please identify whose these are—the signet and bracelet and staff.”
26 Judah recognized them and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” He did not have relations with her again.
27 When it was time for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb. 28 While she was giving birth, one put out his hand, and the midwife took and tied on his hand a scarlet thread, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 But as he drew back his hand, his brother came out. Then she said, “How have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez. 30 Afterward his brother came out, the one that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
The Feeding of the Four Thousand(A)
8 In those days, the crowds being very great with nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have now been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from afar.”
4 His disciples answered, “Where can one get bread to feed these men here in the wilderness?”
5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
They said, “Seven.”
6 He commanded the people to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, He broke them and gave them to His disciples to serve. And they served the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And blessing them, He commanded that these also be served them. 8 So they ate and were filled. And they collected seven baskets of the broken pieces that were left. 9 There were about four thousand who had eaten, and He sent them away. 10 He immediately entered a boat with His disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
The Demand for a Sign(B)
11 The Pharisees came up and began to debate with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven to test Him. 12 He sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” 13 Then He left them and, entering the boat again, departed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod(C)
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread and did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15 He warned them, “Take heed. Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”
16 They reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Being aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why do you reason that you have no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts still hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear?[a] And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”
They said to Him, “Twelve.”
20 “And the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”
They said, “Seven.”
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
The Healing of a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 He came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Him and entreated Him to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. When He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see men as trees, walking.”
25 Then again He put His hands on his eyes and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26 He sent him home away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell it to anyone in the town.”
Peter’s Declaration About Jesus(D)
27 Jesus and His disciples went out into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. On the way He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”
28 They answered, “John the Baptist, but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered Him, “You are the Christ.”
30 He warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection(E)
31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said this openly. And Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him.
33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
34 When He had called the people to Him, with His disciples, He said to them, “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it. But whoever would lose his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whoever therefore is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Eliphaz Speaks: Job Has Sinned
4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2 “If one attempts a word with you, will you be impatient?
But who can keep from speaking?
3 Surely you have instructed many,
and you have strengthened the weak hands.
4 Your words have raised up him who was falling,
and you have fortified the feeble knees.
5 But now it comes upon you, and you are weary;
it reaches even you, and you are terrified.
6 Is not your reverence your confidence?
And the integrity of your ways your hope?
7 “Remember now, who being innocent ever perished?
Or where were the upright ever wiped out?
8 Just like I have seen, those who plow iniquity
and sow trouble, reap the same.
9 By the breath of God they perish,
and by the blast of His anger they are destroyed.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion,
and the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey,
and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 “Now a word was brought to me secretly,
and my ear received a whisper of it.
13 Amid disquieting thoughts from night visions,
when deep sleep falls on mortals,
14 terror and trembling came to me,
which made all my bones shake.
15 A breath of wind was passing before my face,
and the hair on my body was standing up.
16 It stood still,
but I could not recognize its appearance;
a form was in front of my eyes,
there was stillness, then I heard a voice saying:
17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?
18 He does not trust in His servants,
and He charges His angels with error;
19 Even more, those who dwell in houses of clay,
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed before the moth.
20 They are broken in pieces from morning to evening;
they perish forever without anyone regarding it.
21 Are not their tent ropes plucked up,
so they die, even without wisdom?’
Life in the Spirit
8 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and concerning sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace, 7 for the carnal mind is hostile toward God, for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can it be, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you.
12 Therefore, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if through the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. 15 For you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear. But you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified with Him.
The Glory That Is to Be
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us. 19 The eager expectation of the creation waits for the appearance of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
22 We know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves while eagerly waiting for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For we are saved through hope, but hope that is seen is not hope, for why does a man still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26 Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
28 We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.
The Love of God
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes, who is risen, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.”[a]
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, 39 neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
