2 Samuel 19

19 And it was told to Joab, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.”

Therefore, the victory of that day was turned into mourning for all the people. For the people heard say that day, “The king sorrows for his son.”

And the people went that day into the city, secretly, as ashamed people when they hide themselves while fleeing in battle.

So the king hid his face. And the king cried with a loud voice, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son! My son!”

Then Joab came into the house, to the king, and said, “This day you have shamed the faces of all your servants who have saved your life this day, and the lives of your sons, and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines,

“in that you love your enemies and hate your friends. For this day you have declared that you regard neither your princes nor servants. Therefore, this day I perceive that if Absalom had lived, and we all had died this day, that then it would have pleased you well.

“Now, therefore, up! Come out and speak comfortably to your servants. For I swear by the LORD, unless you come out, there will not be one man stay with you this night! And that will be worse for you than all the evil that has fallen on you from your youth until now!”

Then the king arose and sat in the gate. And they declared to all the people, saying, “Behold, the king sits in the gate!” And all the people came before the king (for Israel had fled, each man to his tent).

Then all the people were quarreling throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land for Absalom!

10 “And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle! Therefore, why are you so slow to bring the king back?”

11 But King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar, the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, and say, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, since the saying of all Israel has come to the king, to his house?

12 ‘You are my brethren. My bones and my flesh are yours. Why, then, are you the last who bring the king back?’

13 “Also, say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also if you are not captain of the army to me forever in the room of Joab!’”

14 So he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah, as of one man. Therefore, they sent to the king, saying, “Return with all your servants.”

15 So the king returned and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go meet the king and to cross over Jordan with him.

16 And Shimei, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin (who was from Bahurim) hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David,

17 and a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the House of Saul and his fifteen sons and twenty servants with him. And they went over Jordan before the king.

18 And a boat went over to carry over the king’s household, and to bring him pleasure. Then Shimei, the son of Gera, fell before the king after he had come over Jordan,

19 and said to the king, “Do not let my lord think me guilty, or remember the thing that your servant did wickedly when my lord the king departed out of Jerusalem, so that the king would take it to heart.

20 “For your servant knows that I have done amiss. Therefore, behold, I am the first this day, of all the House of Joseph, who has come to go down to meet my lord the king.”

21 But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, answered and said, “Shall not Shimei die for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”

22 And David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that this day you should be adversaries to me? Shall there any man die this day in Israel? For do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?”

23 Therefore, the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore to him.

24 And Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, came down to meet the king, and had neither washed his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes, from the time the king departed until he returned in peace.

25 And when he had come to Jerusalem, and met the king, the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”

26 And he answered, “My lord the king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said, ‘I would have my donkey saddled, to ride on it to go with the king,’ because your servant is lame.

27 “And he has accused your servant to my lord the king. But my lord the king is as an angel of God. Therefore, do your pleasure.

28 “For all my father’s House were but dead men before my lord the king, yet you sat your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right, therefore, do I still have to cry anymore to the king?”

29 And the king said to him, “Why do you speak any more of your matters? I have said, ‘You and Ziba divide the lands.’”

30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Yes. Let him take it all, seeing my lord the king has come home in peace.”

31 Then Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and went over Jordan with the king, to send him over Jordan.

32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, eighty years old. And he had provided the king with supplies while he sojourned in Mahanaim. For he was a man of very great substance.

33 And the king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will feed you with me in Jerusalem.”

34 And Barzillai said to the king, “How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

35 “I am this day eighty years old, and can I discern between good or evil? Has your servant any taste in what I eat, or in that I drink? Can I hear anymore the voice of singing men and women? Why, then, should your servant be a further burden to my lord the king?

36 “Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king. And why would the king repay me with such a reward?

37 “Please let your servant turn back again, so that I may die in my own city and be buried in the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold your servant Chimham. Let him go with my lord the king and do with him what shall please you.”

38 And the king answered, “Chimham shall go with me, and I will do with him that with which you shall be content. And whatever you shall require of me, that will I do for you.”

39 So all the people went over Jordan. And the king passed over. And the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him. And he returned to his own place.

40 Then the king went to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him. And all the people of Judah crossed over with the king, and also half the people of Israel.

41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brethren, the men of Judah, stolen you away, and have brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him over Jordan?”

42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. And why now are you angry for this matter? Have we eaten at the king’s expense? Or have we taken any bribes?”

43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and have also more right to David than you. Why then did you despise us, so that our advice would not be first had in restoring our king?” And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

2 Corinthians 12

12 Doubtless, it is not profitable for me to boast. Yet, I will now come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

More than fourteen years ago I knew a man in Christ, (whether he was in the body, I cannot tell, or out of the body, I cannot tell; God knows.) who was taken up into the third heaven.

And I knew such a man (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell; God knows).

How that he was taken up into Paradise, and heard words which cannot be spoken, which are not possible for man to utter.

Of such a man I will boast. Of myself I will not boast, except that it be of my weakness.

For though I would desire to boast, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think me above that which he sees in me, or hears of me;

and lest I should be exalted out of measure through the abundance of revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, because I should not be exalted out of measure.

For this thing I implored the Lord three times, that it might depart from me.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you. For My power is made perfect through weakness.” Therefore, rather, I will very gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

10 Therefore, I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in anguish for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

11 I have become a fool in boasting. You have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you. For in nothing was I inferior to the very chief Apostles, though I am nothing.

12 Indeed, the signs of an Apostle were worked out among you with all patience; with signs and wonders and great works.

13 For in what have you been inferior to other churches, except that I myself have not been burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong.

14 Behold, I am ready to come to you this third time. And yet I will not be burdensome to you. For I seek not what is yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the fathers, but the fathers for the children.

15 And I will most gladly spend, and will be spent, for your souls; though, the more I love you, the less I am loved.

16 But let it be that I do not burden you. Yet for as much as I was crafty, I took you with guile.

17 Did I defraud you by any of those whom I sent to you?

18 I have urged Titus to go. And with him I have sent a brother. Did Titus defraud you of anything? Have we not walked in the selfsame spirit, in the same steps?

19 Again, do you think that we defend ourselves to you? We speak before God, in Christ. But we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.

20 For I fear that when I come, I shall not find you as I would like - and that I shall not be found by you as you would like - and that there is strife, envying, wrath, rivalry, slander, gossip, pride, and discord;

21 that when I come again, my God humbles me among you. And I shall lament many of those who have sinned already and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lewdness which they have committed.

Ezekiel 26

26 And in the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the Word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, ‘Aha, the gate of the people is broken. It has turned to me. Seeing she is desolate, I shall be replenished,’

“therefore, thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I come against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea mounts up with its waves.

‘And they shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers. I will also scrape her dust from her and make her like the top of a rock.

‘You shall be for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea. For I have spoken it,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘And it shall be plunder for the nations.

‘And her daughters who are in the field shall be killed by the sword. And they shall know that I am the LORD.’”

For thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I will bring Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel upon Tyre, a king of kings from the North, with horses and with chariots and with horsemen and with a multitude of many people.

“He shall kill your daughters in the field with the sword. And he shall make a fort against you, and cast a siege mound against you, and lift up the shield against you.

“He shall set his engines of war against your walls and break down your towers with his weapons.

10 “The dust of his horses shall cover you, because of their multitude. Your walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into your gates, as into the entry of a city that is broken down.

11 “With the hooves of his horses he shall tread down all your streets. He shall kill the people by the sword; and the pillars of your strength shall fall down to the ground.

12 “And they shall rob your riches and spoil your merchandise. And they shall break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. And they shall cast your stones and your timber and your dust into the midst of the water.

13 “Thus I will cause the sound of your songs to cease; and the sound of your harps shall no longer be heard.

14 “I will lay you like the top of a rock. You shall be for a spreading of nets. You shall no longer be built. For I, the LORD, have spoken it,” says the Lord GOD.

15 Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: “Shall not the isles tremble at the sound of your fall, and at the cry of the wounded, when they shall be killed and murdered in the midst of you?

16 “Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones. They shall put away their robes, and take off their embroidered garments, and shall clothe themselves with astonishment. They shall sit upon the ground and be astonished at every moment and be amazed at you.

17 “And they shall take up a lamentation for you, and say to you, ‘O, you who was inhabited in the sea — the renowned city which was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who caused their fear to be on all who haunt them—how you are destroyed!

18 ‘Now the isles shall be astonished on the day of your fall! Yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at your departure!’”

19 For thus says the Lord GOD: “When I shall make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited, and when I shall bring the deep upon you, and great waters shall cover you.

20 “then I shall cast you down with those who descend into the pit with the people of old time and shall set you in the low parts of the Earth like the old ruins — indeed with those who go down to the pit—so that you shall not be inhabited. And I shall show My Glory in the land of the living.

21 “I will bring you to nothing, and you shall be no more. Though you be sought for, you shall never be found again,” says the Lord GOD.

Psalm 74

74 O God, why have You rejected us forever? Is Your wrath kindled against the sheep of Your pasture?

Think upon the congregation which You have possessed of old; and on the rod of Your inheritance which You have redeemed; and on this Mount Zion wherein You have dwelt.

Lift up Your feet to perpetual desolations. The enemy has broken everything in the Sanctuary.

Your adversaries roar in the midst of Your congregation and set up their banners for signs.

He who lifted the axes upon the thick trees was renowned as one who brought a thing to perfection.

But now they break down the carved work thereof with axes and hammers.

They have cast Your Sanctuary into the fire and razed it to the ground. They have defiled the dwelling place of Your Name.

They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy them altogether.” They have burnt all the synagogues of God in the land.

We do not see our signs. There has not been one Prophet, nor is there any with us who knows how long.

10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach You? Shall the enemy blaspheme Your Name forever?

11 Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? Draw it out of Your bosom and consume them!

12 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the Earth.

13 You divided the sea by Your power. You broke the heads of the dragons in the waters.

14 You broke the head of Leviathan in pieces and gave him to be food for the people in wilderness.

15 You broke up the fountain and river. You dry up mighty rivers.

16 The day is Yours and the night is Yours. You have prepared the light and the Sun.

17 You have set all the borders of the Earth. You have made Summer and Winter.

18 Remember this: the enemy has reproached the LORD and the foolish people have blasphemed Your Name.

19 Do not give the life of Your turtledove to the beast. Do not forget the Congregation of Your poor, forever.

20 Consider Your Covenant; for the dark places of the Earth are full of the habitations of the cruel.

21 O, do not let the oppressed return ashamed! Let the poor and needy praise Your Name.

22 Arise, O God! Maintain Your own cause! Remember Your daily reproach by the foolish man.

23 Do not forget the voice of Your enemies. The tumult of those who rise against You ascends continually. To him who excels: Do not destroy. A Psalm, or song, committed to Asaph
