Version
2 Samuel 1

After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites and had been in Ziklag for two days,

behold, on the third day, a man came from out of Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and earth upon his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the earth and prostrated himself.

Then David said to him, “Where have you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”

And David said to him, “What has been done? Please tell me.” Then he said that the people had fled from the battle and many of the people were overthrown and dead, and also that Saul and Jonathan, his son, were dead.

And David said to the young man who told it to him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan, his son, are dead?”

Then the young man who told him answered, “As I came to Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear. And lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

“And when he looked back, he saw me and called me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’

“And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

“Then said he to me, ‘Please come upon me and kill me! For anguish has come upon me because my life is still whole in me.’

10 “So, I came upon him and killed him. And because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen, I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, as did all the men who were with him.

12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening, for Saul and for Jonathan, his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the House of Israel, because they had been killed with the sword.

13 Afterward, David said to the young man who told it to him, “Where are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.”

14 And David said to him, “How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the anointed of the LORD?”

15 Then David called one of his young men, and said, “Go near and fall upon him.” And he struck him, so that he died.

16 Then said David to him, “Your blood is upon your own head. For your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the LORD’s anointed.’”

17 Then David mourned with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan, his son.

18 Also, he told them to teach the children of Judah to shoot, as it is written in the book of Jasher:

19 “O noble Israel! He is killed upon your high places! How the mighty are overthrown!

20 “Do not tell it in Gath, or publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 “You, mountains of Gilboa. upon you is neither dew nor rain nor fields of offerings. For there the shield of the mighty has been cast down, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

22 “The bow of Jonathan never turned back, nor did the sword of Saul return empty from the blood of the slain, and from the fat of the mighty.

23 “Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. And in their deaths, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

24 “You daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with pleasures, and hung ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25 “How were the mighty slain in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, you were killed in your high places.

26 “Woe is me for you, my brother Jonathan! Very kind have you been to me. Your love for me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women. How the mighty are overthrown, and the weapons of war destroyed!”

1 Corinthians 12

12 Now, concerning spiritual things, brothers, I would not have you ignorant.

You know that you were Gentiles, and were carried away to the dumb idols, as you were led.

Therefore, I declare to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed. Also, no one can say that Jesus is the Lord, except by the Holy Ghost.

Now, there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are diversities of services, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but God is the same Who works all in all.

Yet the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each, for the profit of all.

For by the Spirit, the Word of wisdom is given to one; and to another, the Word of knowledge, by the same Spirit;

and to another, faith, by the same Spirit; and to another, the gifts of healing, by the same Spirit;

10 and to another, the operations of miracles; and to another, prophecy; and to another, the discerning of spirits; and to another, diversities of tongues; and to another, the interpretation of tongues.

11 Yet, in all these things works one and the same Spirit, distributing to everyone personally, as He will.

12 For as the body is one yet has many members—and all the members of the body, though they be many, are one body—even so is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, whether slave or free - and have all been made to drink of one Spirit.

14 For the body is also not one member, but many.

15 If the foot would say, ‘Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body’, is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear would say, ‘Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body’, is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where then the hearing? And if the whole were hearing, where then the smelling?

18 But now, God has placed the members, every one of them in the body, at His own pleasure.

19 For if they were all one member, where is the body?

20 But indeed, there are now many members, yet one body.

21 Now the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you.’ Nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’

22 Yea, but it is much rather those members of the body which seem to be weaker which are necessary.

23 And upon those members of the body which we think most dishonorable, we place more honor. And those of us who are indecent are more presentable.

24 For the presentable of us have no need. But God has blended the body together, and has given more honor to that which lacked,

25 lest there should be any division in the body. So that the members should have the same care one for another.

26 Therefore, if one member suffers, all suffer with it. If one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and particular members.

28 And God has ordained some in the Church: first Apostles, second Prophets, third teachers, then those who do miracles, after that, the gifts of healing, helping, administration, kinds of tongues.

29 Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all teachers?

30 Are all doers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

31 But desire the better gifts. And still I will show you a more excellent way.

Ezekiel 10

10 And as I looked, behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the Cherubim, there appeared something like a sapphire stone upon them, having the likeness of a throne.

And He spoke to the man clothed in linen, and said: “Go in between the wheels, under the Cherub, and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the Cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he went as I watched.

Now as the Cherubim stood upon the right side of the house, the man went in, and the cloud filled the inner court.

Then the Glory of the LORD went up from the Cherub, and stood over the door of the house. And the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the LORD’s Glory.

And the sound of the Cherubim’ wings was heard as far as the outer court, like the Voice of the Almighty God, when He speaks.

And when He had Commanded the man clothed with linen, saying: “Take fire from between the wheels, from between the Cherubim,” then He went in and stood beside the wheel.

And one Cherub stretched forth his hand from between the Cherubim, to the fire that was between the Cherubim, and took from it and put it into the hands of him who was clothed in linen, who took it and went out.

And there appeared in the Cherubim, the likeness of a man’s hand under their wings.

And when I looked up, behold, four wheels were beside the Cherubim, one wheel by one Cherub and another wheel by another Cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was as the color of a chrysolite stone.

10 And their appearance (there were four of the same) was as if one wheel had been in another wheel.

11 When they went forth, they went upon their four sides. And they did not turn as they went but went only in their original direction. They did not turn as they went.

12 And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes, all around, in the same four wheels.

13 And they cried to these wheels within my hearing, “O wheel!”

14 And every beast had four faces. The first face was the face of a Cherub. And the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15 And the Cherubim were lifted up. This is the beast that I saw at the river Chebar.

16 And when the Cherubim moved, the wheels went beside them. And when the Cherubim lifted up their wings to mount up from the Earth, the same wheels also did not turn from beside them.

17 When the Cherubim stood still, the wheels stood still. And when one was lifted up, the other also lifted themselves up. For the spirit of the beast was in them.

18 Then the Glory of the LORD departed from above the door of the house, and stood upon the Cherubim.

19 And the Cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the Earth in my sight. When they went out, the wheels were also beside them. And everyone stood at the entry of the gate of the LORD’s House, at the east side, and the Glory of the God of Israel was upon them on high.

20 This is the beast that I saw under the God of Israel, by the river Chebar. And I knew that they were the Cherubim.

21 Each one had four faces, and each one four wings, and the likeness of man’s hands under their wings,

22 and the likeness of their faces the same as the faces which I saw by the river Chebar. The appearance of the Cherubim was the same. They each went straight forward.

Psalm 49

49 Hear this, all you people! Give ear, all you who dwell in the world,

low as well as high, both rich and poor!

My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart is of knowledge.

I will incline my ear to a parable and utter my high saying upon the harp.

Why should I fear in the evil days, when the iniquity at my heels shall surround me?

They trust in their goods and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.

Yet a man can by no means redeem his brother. He cannot give his ransom to God,

(so precious is the redemption of their souls, and ceases forever)

so that he may yet live forever and not see the grave.

10 For he sees that wise men die; and also that the ignorant and foolish perish and leave their riches for others.

11 They think their houses and their habitations shall continue forever, from generation to generation. And they call their lands by their names.

12 But man shall not continue in honor. He is like the beasts that die.

13 This is the way of those who utter foolishness. Their posterity delights in their talk. Selah.

14 Like sheep they lie in the grave. Death devours them. And the righteous shall have domination over them in the morning. For their beauty shall be consumed, from their house to grave.

15 But God shall deliver my soul from the power of the grave; for He will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his House is increased.

17 For he shall take nothing away when he dies, nor shall his pomp descend after him.

18 For while he lived, he rejoiced over himself (and men will praise you when you make much of yourself).

19 He shall enter into the generation of his fathers. They shall not live forever.

20 An honored man who does not understand; he is like beasts that perish. A Psalm of Asaph.
