1 Samuel 21-22

21 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the Priest. And Ahimelech was afraid upon meeting David, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

And David said to Ahimelech the Priest, “The king has commanded me a certain thing, and has said to me, ‘Let no man know where I send you, and what I have commanded you, and that I have appointed my servants to such and such places.’

“Now, therefore, if you have anything on hand, give me five cakes of bread or whatever there is present.”

And the Priest answered David, and said, “There is no common bread on hand, but here is hallowed bread, if the young men have kept themselves, at least from women.”

David then answered the Priest, and said to him, “Certainly women have been separated from us for these two or three days since I came out. And the vessels of the young men were holy, though the road was profane. And how much more, then, shall the vessel be sanctified this day?”

So the Priest gave him hallowed bread. For there was no bread there, except the showbread that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread there on the day that it was taken away.

And there was on the same day, one of the servants of Saul, abiding before the LORD, named Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen.

And David said to Ahimelech, “Is there not here under your hand a spear or a sword? For I have neither brought my sword nor my harness with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

And the Priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that for yourself, take it. For there is nothing else except that here.” And David said, “There is nothing like it. Give it to me.”

10 And David arose and fled the same day from the presence of Saul and went to Achish, the king of Gath.

11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing to him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has killed his thousand, and David his ten thousand?’”

12 And David considered these words and was very afraid of Achish, the king of Gath.

13 And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scratched on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Lo, you see the man is beside himself. Why have you brought him to me?

15 “Have I need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? Shall he come into my house?”

22 Therefore, David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brethren and all his father’s House heard it, they went down there to him.

And there, all men who were troubled gathered to him, and all men who were in debt, and all those whose souls were embittered. And he was their prince. And there were about four hundred men with him.

And David went there to Mizpah in Moab, and said to the king of Moab, “Please, let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.”

And he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

And the Prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Depart and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed and came into the forest of Hereth.

And Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered. And Saul remained in Gibeah, under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand. And all his servants stood around him.

And Saul said to his servants who stood around him, “Hear now, sons of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains over thousands and captains over hundreds,

“so that all of you have conspired against me? And there is not one who tells me that my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse? And there is not one of you who is sorry for me or tells me that my son has stirred up my servant to lie in wait against me, as it is this day?”

Then Doeg the Edomite (who was appointed over the servants of Saul) answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse when he came to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub,

10 “who asked counsel of the LORD for him and gave him provisions. And he also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the Priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s House (the priests who were in Nob). And they all came to the king.

12 And Saul said, “Hear now, you son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “I am here, my lord.”

13 Then Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him provision, and a sword, and have asked counsel of God for him, so that he could rise against me and lie in wait, as it is this day?”

14 And Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who is so faithful among all your servants as David (being also the king’s son-in-law) and goes at your commandment and is honorable in your House?

15 “Have I this day first begun to ask counsel of God for him? Far be it from me. Do not let the king impute anything to his servant or to all the House of my father. For your servant knew nothing of all this, neither less nor more.”

16 Then the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s House!”

17 And the king said to the sergeants who stood around him, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because their hand is also with David and because they knew when he fled and did not tell me!” But the servants of the king would not move their hands to fall upon the priests of the LORD.

18 Then the king said to Doeg, “Turn yourselves and fall upon the priests!” And Doeg the Edomite turned and ran upon the priests and that same day killed eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod.

19 He also struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword, both man and woman, child and suckling, ox and donkey and sheep with the edge of the sword.

20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub (whose name was Abiathar) escaped and fled after David.

21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the LORD’s priests.

22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew it the same day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would tell Saul. I am the cause of the death of all the people of your father’s House.

23 “Stay with me. Do not fear. For he who seeks my life shall also seek your life. For you shall be safe with me.”

1 Corinthians 3

And I could not speak to you, brothers, as to spiritual men, but as to carnal, as to infants in Christ.

I gave you milk to drink, and not solid food. For you were not yet able to bear it, nor are you able even now.

For you are still fleshly, since there is among you envying and strife and divisions. Are you not still carnal, and walking as man?

For when one says, ‘I am Paul’s’, and another, ‘I am Apollos’s’, are you not carnal?

Who is Paul then? And who is Apollos, but the ministers, by whom you believed, and as the Lord gave to every man?

I have planted, Apollos watered. But God gave the increase.

So then, neither is he who plants anything, nor he who waters. But God gives the increase.

And he who plants, and he who waters, are one. And everyone shall receive his wages, according to his labor.

For we together are God’s laborers. You are God’s fellow workers, and God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God given to me, as a skillful master builder, I have laid the foundation. And another builds on that. But, let everyone take heed how he builds upon it.

11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid; which is Jesus Christ.

12 And if anyone builds gold, silver, precious stones, timber, hay, or stubble upon this foundation,

13 everyone’s work shall be made apparent. For the Day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by the fire. And the fire shall test everyone’s work, of what sort it is.

14 If anyone’s work that he has built upon abides, he shall receive wages.

15 If anyone’s work burns, he shall suffer loss. But he himself shall be saved, although still, as it were, by fire.

16 Do you not know that you are the Temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

17 If anyone destroys the Temple of God, God shall destroy him. For the Temple of God is holy, which you are.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this world, let him be a fool, that he may be wise.

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness’.

20 And again, ‘The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are useless’.

21 Therefore, let no one boast in man. For all things are yours,

22 whether it be Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death - whether things present, or things to come - all are yours,

23 and you Christ’s, and Christ God’s.

Ezekiel 1

It happened at that time, in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month (as I was among the captives by the river Chebar) that the heavens were opened; and I saw visions of God.

On the fifth day of the month (which was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity),

the Word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar, where the Hand of the LORD was upon him.

And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the North, a great cloud and a fire wrapped about it. And a brightness surrounded it. And in the midst of it, in the midst of the fire, the likeness of amber came out.

Also out of its midst came the likeness of four beasts. And this was their form: they had the appearance of a man.

And each one had four faces. And each one had four wings.

And their feet were straight feet. And the sole of their feet was like the soles of a calf’s foot. And they sparkled like the appearance of bright bronze.

And the hands of a man came out from under their wings, in the four parts of them. And those four had their faces and their wings.

They were joined, by their wings, to one another. When they went forth, they did not return. Each one went straight forward.

10 And the likeness of their faces was as the face of a man. And those four had the face of a lion on the right side. And those four had the face of a bull on the left side. Those four also had the face of an eagle.

11 Thus were their faces. But their wings were spread out above. Two of each one were joined to each other and two covered their bodies.

12 And each one went straight forward. They went wherever their spirit led them. They did not return when they went forth.

13 As for the likeness of the beasts, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps running among the beasts. And the fire had a brightness. And the fire went out of the lightning.

14 And the beasts ran and returned, like lightning.

15 Now, as I beheld the beasts, behold, a wheel appeared upon the earth by the beasts, having four faces.

16 The appearance of the wheels and their workings was like chrysolite. And those four had one form, and their appearance and their workings as a wheel inside another wheel.

17 When they moved, they moved in one of four directions. They did not turn when they moved.

18 As for their rims, they were so high that they were terrifying to behold. And their rims were full of eyes, around all four of them.

19 And when the beasts moved, the wheels went with them. And when the beasts were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

20 Wherever their spirit led them, they went, and there the spirit of the wheels led them; and the wheels were lifted up with them. For the spirit of the beasts was in the wheels.

21 When the beasts moved, they moved. And when they stood still, they stood still. And when they were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up with them. For the spirit of the beasts was in the wheels.

22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the beasts was wonderful, like crystal, spread out over their heads.

23 And under the firmament their wings were straight, one toward another. Each one had two which covered them, and each one had two which covered their bodies.

24 And when they went forth, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the Voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an army. When they stood, they let down their wings.

25 And when they stood and had let down their wings, there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads.

26 And above the firmament that was over their heads, was the appearance of a throne, like a Sapphire stone. And upon the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man above upon it.

27 And I saw the likeness of amber, and the likeness of fire, all around and within it, from his loins upward, as well as from his loins downward. I saw a likeness of fire and brightness all around it.

28 As the likeness of the rainbow that is in the clouds on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the light all around.

29 This was the appearance of the likeness of the Glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face. And I heard the Voice of One Who spoke.

Psalm 37

37 Do not fret because of wicked men, nor be envious of evildoers.

For they shall soon be cut down like grass and shall wither as the green herb.

Trust in the LORD and do good. Dwell in the land, and you shall assuredly be fed.

And delight yourself in the LORD; and He shall give you your heart’s desire.

Commit your way to the LORD, and trust in Him; and He shall make it so.

And He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noon day.

Wait patiently upon the LORD, and hope in Him. Do not fret over him who prospers in his way, nor over the man who executes wicked schemes.

Cease from anger and abandon wrath. Do not fret. It leads only to evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off; and those who wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the land.

10 Therefore, yet a little while and the wicked shall not appear; and you shall look for his place and he shall not be found.

11 But meek men shall possess the Earth and shall have their delight in the multitude of peace.

12 The wicked practices against the just and gnashes his teeth against him.

13 The LORD shall laugh him to scorn; for He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn their sword and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy and to slay such as are of upright conversation.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart; and their bows shall be broken.

16 A small thing to the just man is better than great riches to the wicked and mighty.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken; but the LORD upholds the just men.

18 The LORD knows the days of upright men; and their inheritance shall be perpetual.

19 They shall not be confounded in the perilous time; and in the days of famine they shall have enough.

20 But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the LORD shall be consumed as the fat of lambs. With the smoke, they shall vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows and does not pay again. But the righteous is merciful and gives.

22 For such as are blessed shall inherit the land. And those who are cursed by Him shall be cut off.

23 The paths of man are directed by the LORD; for He loves his way.

24 Though he falls, he shall not be cast off; for the LORD upholds his hand.

25 I have been young and am old. Yet I never saw the righteous forsaken, nor His seed begging bread.

26 He is ever merciful and lends, and His seed enjoys the blessing.

27 Flee from evil and do good, and dwell forever.

28 For the LORD loves judgment and does not forsake His saints. They shall be preserved forevermore. But the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous men shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous will speak of wisdom; and his tongue will talk of judgment.

31 The Law of his God is in his heart; his steps shall not slide.

32 The wicked watched the righteous and sought to kill him.

33 The LORD will not leave him in His hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the LORD and keep His way; and He shall exalt you, so that you shall inherit the land. When the wicked men shall perish, you shall see.

35 I have seen the wicked strong and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36 Yet he passed away; and lo, he was gone. And I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the upright man and behold the just; for the end of that man is peace.

38 But their transgressors shall be destroyed together. The end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous men shall be from the LORD. He shall be their strength in the time of trouble.

40 For the LORD shall help them and deliver them. He shall deliver them from the wicked, and shall save them, because they trust in Him. A Psalm of David, for remembrance.
