1 Samuel 14

14 Then, on a day when Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come and let us go over toward the Philistines’ garrison that is yonder, on the other side,” he did not tell his father.

And Saul waited on the border of Gibeah, under a pomegranate tree, which was in Migron. And the people who were with him were about six hundred men.

And Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, was the LORD’s Priest in Shiloh and wore an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

Now, on the road whereby Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on one side and a sharp rock on the other side. The name of one was called “Bozez” and the name of the other “Seneh”.

The one rock stretched from the North toward Michmash, and the other from the South toward Gibeah.

And Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work with us. For it is not hard for the LORD to save with many or with few.”

And he who bore his armor said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go where it pleases you. Behold, I am with you as your heart desires.”

Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we go over to those men and will show ourselves to them.

“If they say this to us: ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them.

10 “But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up. For the LORD has delivered them into our hand. And this shall be a sign to us.”

11 So they both showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “See, the Hebrews come out of the holes in which they had hidden themselves.”

12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us. For we will teach you something.” Then Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me. For the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

13 So Jonathan went up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armor bearer after him. And some fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer killed them from behind.

14 So the first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer made was about twenty men, within half an acre of land which two oxen plow.

15 And there was a fear in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Also, the garrison and those who went out to plunder were afraid. And the earth trembled, for it was stricken with fear by God.

16 Then, the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin saw. And behold, the multitude melted away as they went, being struck down.

17 Therefore, Saul said to the people who were with him, “Search, now, and see who is gone from us.” And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.

18 And Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the Ark of God here.” (for the Ark of God was, at that time, with the children of Israel)

19 And while Saul talked to the Priest, the noise that was in the camp of the Philistines spread further away and increased. Therefore, Saul said to the Priest, “Withdraw your hand.”

20 And Saul was assembled with all the people who were with him. And they came to the battle. And behold, every man’s sword was against his neighbor. There was very great confusion.

21 Moreover, the Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had come with them into all parts of the camp, they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Also, all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves on Mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines had fled, they followed after them in the battle.

23 And so, the LORD saved Israel that day. And the battle continued to Beth Aven.

24 And at that time, the men of Israel were hard-pressed that day. For Saul charged the people with an oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats food before night, so that I may be avenged of my enemies.” So, none of the people tasted sustenance.

25 And all those of the land came to a forest, where honey lay upon the ground.

26 And the people came into the forest. And behold, the honey dropped. And no man moved his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

27 But Jonathan did not hear when his father charged the people with the oath. Therefore, he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth. And his eyes were made clear.

28 Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father made the people swear, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats sustenance this day.” And the people were weary.

29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See now how my eyes are made clear because I have tasted a little of this honey.

30 “How much more if the people had eaten today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For would there not now have been a greater slaughter among the Philistines?”

31 And they had stricken the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were exceedingly faint.

32 So, the people turned to the plunder and took sheep and oxen and calves and killed them on the ground. And the people ate them with the blood.

33 Then men told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood.” And he said, “You have trespassed. Roll a great stone to me this day.”

34 Again Saul said, “Scatter yourselves among the people and ask every man to bring me his ox, and every man his sheep, and to kill them here and eat, and to not sin against the LORD in eating with the blood.” And that night, every man brought his ox in his hand and killed it there.

35 Then Saul made an Altar to the LORD. This was the first Altar that he made to the LORD.

36 And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light. And let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever you think best.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.”

37 So Saul asked of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hands of Israel?” But He did not answer him at that time.

38 And Saul said, “All you chiefs of the people, come here and know and see by whom this sin is done this day.

39 “For as the LORD lives Who saves Israel, even though it is done by Jonathan, my son, he shall die the death.” But none of the people answered him.

40 Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side; and I and Jonathan, my son, will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what you think best.”

41 Then Saul said to the LORD God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.

42 And Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan, my son.” And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. And lo, I must die.”

44 Again Saul answered, “God do so and more also, unless you die the death, Jonathan.”

45 And the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has so mightily delivered Israel? May it never be! As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground! For he has worked with God this day.” So, the people delivered Jonathan, so that he did not die.

46 Then Saul came up from the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 So Saul held the kingdom over Israel and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the children of Ammon, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. And wherever he went, he handled them as wicked men.

48 He also gathered an army and struck Amalek, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who spoiled them.

49 Now, the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Jishui, and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters: the elder was called Merab, and the younger was named Michal.

50 And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of his chief captain was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

51 And Kish was Saul’s father. And Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel.

52 And there was fierce war against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And whoever Saul viewed as a strong man, and fit for the war, he gathered to it.

Romans 12

12 Therefore, I urge you brothers, by the mercies of God, to give up your bodies - a living sacrifice; holy and acceptable to God – as your reasonable service.

And do not conform yourselves to this world. But be changed, by the renewing of your mind. So that you may test what the good and acceptable and perfect will of God is.

For I say (through the grace that is given to me) to everyone who is among you, that no one think of himself more highly than he ought. But that he judges himself soberly, according to the measure of faith God has dealt him.

For as we have many members in one body, and all members do not have the same office,

so we (being many) are one body in Christ, and each other’s members.

Seeing then that we have diverse gifts, according to the grace given to us—if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the portion of faith,

or service, let us serve, or one who teaches, in teaching,

or encouragement, in encouraging, in giving, let him do so with simplicity, in leadership, with diligence, in mercy, with cheerfulness—

love without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil, and cling to that which is good.

10 Be kindly affectionate toward one another with brotherly love. Lead one another toward honor,

11 not slothful to do service, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord,

12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing in prayer,

13 distributing to the needs of the saints, giving yourselves to the loving of strangers.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless, I say, and do not curse.

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

16 Be like-minded toward one another. Do not be high-minded; but align yourselves with the humble. Do not be wise in your own eyes.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Provide honorably in the sight of all mankind.

18 If it is possible, as much as you can, be at peace with all mankind.

19 Dearly beloved, do not avenge yourselves; but give Wrath its opportunity. For it is written, “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay”, says the Lord.

20 Therefore, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he thirsts, give him drink. For in so doing, you shall heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Be not overcome by evil. But, overcome evil with good.

Jeremiah 51

51 Thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will raise up a destroying wind against Babel, and against the inhabitants who lift up their hearts against Me.

“And I will send fanners to Babel which shall fan her and shall empty her land. For on the day of trouble, they shall be against her on every side.

“Also, to the bender who bends his bow, and to him who lifts himself up in his armor: ‘Do not spare her young men. But destroy all her army.’

“Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and those who are thrust through in her streets.

“For neither Israel nor Judah has been widowed by his God, the LORD of Hosts, though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.”

Flee out of the midst of Babel; and everyone deliver his soul! Do not be destroyed in her iniquity! For this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance. He will render to her a recompense!

Babel has been as a golden cup in the LORD’s Hand, that made all the Earth drunk. The nations have drunk her wine; therefore, the nations rage.

Babel has suddenly fallen and been destroyed. Howl for her! Bring balm for her sore, if she may be healed.

We wanted to heal Babel; but she was not healed. Forsake her and let everyone go into his own country. For her judgment has come up into Heaven and has been lifted up to the clouds.

10 The LORD has brought forth our righteousness. Come and let us declare the work of the LORD our God in Zion!

11 Make the arrows bright. Gather the shields. The LORD has raised up the spirit of the king of the Medes. For His purpose is against Babel, to destroy it, because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of His Temple.

12 Set up the standard upon the walls of Babel. Make the watch strong. Set up the watchmen. Prepare the scouts. For the LORD has both devised and done that which He spoke against the inhabitants of Babel.

13 O you who dwell upon many waters, abundant in treasures! Your end has come, the end of your covetousness!

14 The LORD of Hosts has sworn by Himself: “Surely, I will fill you with men, as with caterpillars; and they shall cry and shout against you!”

15 He has made the Earth by His power, and established the world by His wisdom, and has stretched out the sky by His discretion.

16 By His Voice He gives the multitude of waters in the sky; and He causes the clouds to ascend from the ends of the Earth. He turns lightning to rain, and brings forth the wind out of His treasures.

17 All mankind is unintentionally brutish. Every metalsmith withers before his carved image. For his molten image is falsehood; and there is no breath in it.

18 They are meaningless, the work of errors. At the time of their reckoning, they shall perish.

19 The Portion of Jacob is not like them. For He is the Maker of All Things, and the Rod of His Inheritance. The LORD of Hosts is His Name.

20 “You are My hammer, and weapons of war. For with you I will break the nations; and with you I will destroy kingdoms;

21 “And by you I will break horse and horseman; and by you I will break the chariot and its rider.

22 “By you, also, I will break man and woman; and by you I will break old and young; and by you I will break the young man and the maid.

23 “I will also break the shepherd and his flock by you. And by you I will break the farmer and his yoke of oxen; and by you I will break the dukes and princes.

24 “And I will render to Babel, and to all the inhabitants of the Chaldeans, all their evil that they have done in Zion, in your sight,” says the LORD.

25 “Behold, I come to you, O destroying mountain which destroys all the Earth,” says the LORD! “And I will stretch out My Hand upon you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain.

26 “They shall take neither a stone for a corner nor a stone for foundations. But you shall be destroyed forever,” says the LORD.

27 Set up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpets among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call up the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz against her. Appoint the prince against her. Cause horses to come up as rough locusts.

28 Prepare the nations against her, with the kings of the Medes, its dukes, and its princes, and all the land of his dominion.

29 And the land shall tremble and sorrow. For the plan of the LORD shall be performed against Babel, to make the land of Babel waste, without an inhabitant.

30 The strong men of Babel have ceased to fight. They have remained in their strongholds. Their strength has failed; they were like women. They have burnt her dwelling places. Her bars are broken.

31 A runner shall run to meet a runner, and a messenger to meet a messenger, to show the king of Babel that his city has been captured on all sides,

32 and that the passages are blocked, and the reeds burnt with fire, and the men of war frightened.

33 For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “The daughter of Babel is like a threshing floor at the time of her treading. Yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.”

34 “Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babel, has devoured me and destroyed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He swallowed me up like a dragon and filled his belly with my delicacies and has cast me out.

35 “‘The plunder of me, and that which was left of me, be upon Babel,’ the inhabitant of Zion shall say. And ‘My blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,’ Jerusalem shall say.

36 “Therefore thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will maintain your cause, and take vengeance for you. And I will dry up the sea and dry up her springs.

37 ‘And Babel shall be heaps, a dwelling place for dragons, an astonishment and a hissing, without an inhabitant.

38 ‘They shall roar together like lions, and yell as the lion’s whelps.

39 ‘In their heat I will make them feasts. And I will make them drunk, so that they may rejoice and sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake,’ says the LORD.

40 ‘I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats.

41 ‘How Sheshach has been captured! And how the glory of the whole Earth has been captured! How Babel has become an astonishment among the nations!

42 ‘The sea has come up upon Babel. She is covered with the multitude of its waves.

43 ‘Her cities are desolate. The land is dry and a wilderness, a land in which no man dwells, nor does the son of man pass by it.

44 ‘I will also visit Bel in Babel. And I will bring out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up. And the nations shall no longer run to him. And the wall of Babel shall fall.

45 ‘My people! Go out from the midst of her! And deliver every man’s soul from the fierce wrath of the LORD,

46 ‘lest your heart faint, and you fear the rumor that shall be heard in the land. The rumor shall come this year. And after that, in another year, a rumor shall come, and cruelty in the land, and ruler against ruler.

47 ‘Therefore, behold, the days come that I will bring judgment upon the images of Babel. And the whole land shall be ashamed; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

48 ‘Then the heavens and the Earth, and all that is in them, shall rejoice for Babel. For the destroyers shall come to her from the North,’ says the LORD.”

49 As Babel caused the slain of Israel to fall, so by Babel the slain of all the Earth fell.

50 You who have escaped the sword, go away! Do not stand still! Remember the LORD from far away; and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

51 We are ashamed because we have heard reproach. Shame has covered our faces, for strangers have come into the Sanctuaries of the LORD’s House.

52 “Therefore, behold, the days come,” says the LORD, “that I will visit her carved images. And the wounded shall groan throughout all her land.

53 “Even if Babel were to mount up to the heavens, and even if she were to defend her strength on high, her destroyers shall still come from Me,” says the LORD.

54 A sound of a cry from Babel, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans,

55 because the LORD has laid Babel waste and destroyed her great voice. And her waves shall roar like great waters. A sound was made by their noise

56 because the destroyer has come upon her (upon Babel) and her strong men are taken; their bows are broken. For the LORD God, Who repays, shall surely repay.

57 “And I will make her princes drunk, and her wise men, her dukes, and her nobles, and her strong men. And they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake,” says the King, Whose Name is the LORD of Hosts.

58 Thus says the LORD of Hosts: “The thick wall of Babel shall be broken, and her high gates shall be burnt with fire, and the people shall labor in vain, and the folk in the fire, for they shall be weary.”

59 The Word which Jeremiah the Prophet commanded Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah, the king of Judah into Babel, in the fourth year of his reign (and this Seraiah was a peaceable Prince):

60 So Jeremiah wrote in a Book all the evil that would come upon Babel, all these things that are written against Babel.

61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you come to Babel, and shall see and shall read all these words,

62 “then you shall say, ‘O, LORD, You have spoken against this place, to destroy it, so that none would remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it should be desolate forever!’

63 “And when you have finished reading this book, you shall bind a stone to it and cast it in the midst of Euphrates,

64 “and shall say, ‘Thus shall Babel be drowned and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her! And they shall be weary!’” Thus far are the Words of Jeremiah.

Psalm 30

30 I will magnify You, O LORD. You have exalted me and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.

O LORD, my God, I cried to You; and You have restored me.

O LORD, You have brought up my soul out of the grave. You have revived me from those who go down into the pit.

Sing praises to the LORD, His Saints, and give thanks before the remembrance of His Holiness.

For His anger endures but a while. In His favor is life. Weeping may abide at evening, but joy comes in the morning.

And in my prosperity, I said, “I shall never be moved.”

For You, LORD, from Your goodness, had made my mountain to stand strong. You hid Your face, and I was troubled.

Then I cried to You, O LORD, and prayed to my LORD.

What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit! Shall the dust give thanks to You? Or shall it declare Your Truth?

10 Hear, O LORD; and have mercy upon me. LORD, be my Helper.

11 You have turned my mourning into joy. You have loosened my sackcloth and girded me with gladness.

12 Therefore, my tongue shall praise You, and not cease. O LORD, my God, I will give thanks to You forever. To him who excels: A Psalm of David.
