1 Samuel 11

11 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will be your servants.”

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, “On this condition I will make a covenant with you: that I may put out all your right eyes, and bring that shame upon all Israel.”

To whom the elders of Jabesh said, “Give us seven days respite, so that we may send messengers to all the territories of Israel. and then if no man delivers us, we will come out to you.”

Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and told this news in the hearing of the people. And all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

And behold, Saul came following the cattle out of the field. And Saul said, “What ails the people, so that they weep?” And they told him the news of the men of Jabesh.

Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard that news. And he was exceedingly angry

and took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territories of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come forth with Saul, and with Samuel, so shall his oxen be served.” And the fear of the LORD fell on the people; and they came out as one man.

And when he counted them in Bezek, the children of Israel numbered three hundred thousand men, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

Then they said to the messengers who came, “So say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow by the time the Sun is hot, you shall have help.’” And the messengers came and told it to the men of Jabesh, who were glad.

10 Therefore, the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you; and you shall do with us all that pleases you.”

11 And when the next day had come, Saul put the people in three bands. And they came in upon the army during the morning watch and killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who remained were scattered, so that not even two of them were left together.

12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, so that we may kill them.”

13 “But,” said Saul, “no man shall die this day. For today the LORD has saved Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, so that we may go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.”

15 So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king there, before the LORD in Gilgal. And they offered Peace Offerings before the LORD there. And Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced exceedingly there.

Romans 9

I say the truth in Christ. I do not lie; my conscience bearing me witness in the holy Ghost,

so that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

For I could wish myself to be accursed, to be separated from Christ, for my brothers who are my kinsmen according to the flesh,

(who are the Israelites), to whom pertains the adoption, and the glory, and the Covenants, and the giving of the Law, and the service of God, and the promises;

from whom are the Fathers, and from whom, concerning the flesh, Christ - Who is God over all, blessed forever – came. Amen.

Notwithstanding, it cannot be that the Word of God should take no effect. For not all are Israel who are of Israel.

Nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham. But: “In Isaac shall your seed be called.”

That is, those who are the children of the flesh are not the children of God. But the children of the promise are counted as the seed.

For this is a Word of Promise: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son”;

10 and not only her, but Rebecca also, when she had conceived by one, even by our Father, Isaac.

11 For before the children were born - and when they had done neither good nor evil (so that the purpose of God might remain according to election; not by works, but by Him Who calls) -

12 it was said to her: “The Elder shall serve the younger.”

13 As it is written: “I have loved Jacob and have hated Esau.”

14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Absolutely not!

15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy and will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.”

16 So then it is not in him who wills, nor in him who runs, but in God, Who shows mercy.

17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “For this same purpose I have raised you up, so that I might show My power in you; and that My Name might be declared throughout all the Earth.”

18 Therefore, He has mercy on whom He will. And whom He will, He hardens.

19 You will then say to me: “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?”

20 But who are you, O man, to contradict God? Shall the thing formed say to Him Who formed it, “Why have you made me this way”?

21 Does not indeed the potter have authority over the clay to make, from the same lump, one vessel unto honor and another unto dishonor?

22 What if God – though willing to show His wrath, and to make His power known - endured with much patience the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?

23 That in so doing, He might declare the riches of His Glory upon the vessels of mercy, which He has prepared unto Glory -

24 even we whom He has called - not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.

25 As He also says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘My people’ who were not my people; and her ‘Beloved’ who was not beloved.

26 “And it shall be in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people’. There they shall be called ‘The sons of the living God’.”

27 Also, Isaiah cries concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel were as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved.

28 “For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the Lord will make a short work upon the Earth.”

29 And as Isaiah said before: “Except that the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like Gomorrah.”

30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who did not follow righteousness, have attained righteousness, even the righteousness that is by faith;

31 but Israel, which followed the Law of righteousness, could not attain the Law of righteousness.

32 Why? Because they did not not seek it by faith, but by the works of the Law. For they have stumbled at the stumbling stone.

33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay a stumbling stone in Zion; an ensnaring rock. And everyone who believes in Him, shall not be ashamed.”

Jeremiah 48

48 Concerning Moab, thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “Woe to Nebo, for it is wasted! Kirjathaim is shamed and captured! Misgab is shamed and afraid!

“Moab shall no longer boast. In Heshbon, they have devised evil against it. Come, and let us destroy it, so that it is no longer a nation! Also, you shall be destroyed, O madmen, and the sword shall pursue you!

“There shall be a voice of crying from Horonaim, desolation and great destruction.

“Moab is destroyed. Her little ones have caused their cry to be heard.

“For at the going up of Luhith, the mourner shall go up with weeping. For in the going down of Horonaim, the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.

“Flee and save your lives! And be like the heath in the wilderness.

“For because you hast trusted in your works and in your treasures, you shall also be taken. And Chemosh shall go forth into captivity together with his priests and his princes.

“And the destroyer shall come upon all cities, and no city shall escape. The valley shall also perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD has spoken.

“Give wings to Moab, so that he may flee and get away. For his cities shall be desolate, without any to dwell in them.

10 “Cursed is the one who does the work of the LORD deceitfully. And cursed is the one who restrains his sword from blood.

11 “Moab has been at rest from his youth, and he has settled on his dregs, and has not been poured from vessel to vessel. Nor has he gone into captivity. Therefore, his taste remained in him, and his scent has not changed.

12 “Therefore, behold, the days come,” says the LORD, “that I will send to him those who shall carry him away, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.

13 “And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the House of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.

14 “How can you think ‘We are mighty and strong men of war?’

15 “Moab is destroyed, and his cities burnt up. And his chosen young men have gone down to slaughter,” says the King Whose Name is The LORD of Hosts.

16 “The destruction of Moab is ready to come, and his plague hastens quickly.

17 “All you who are around him, mourn for him. All you who know his name, say, ‘How the strong staff has broken, the beautiful rod!

18 “You, daughter who inhabits Dibon, come down from glory and sit in thirst. For the destroyer of Moab shall come upon you. He shall destroy your strongholds.

19 “You who dwell in Aroer, stand by the way and behold. Ask him who flees and who escapes, saying, ‘What has been done?’

20 “Moab is shamed, for it is destroyed. Howl and cry! Tell it in Arnon, that Moab is made waste,

21 “and judgment has come upon the plain country, upon Holon and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath,

22 “and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon the House of Diblathaim,

23 “and upon Kirjathaim, and upon Beth Gamul, and upon Beth Meon,

24 “and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.

25 “The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken,” says the LORD.

26 “Make him drunk. Because he magnified himself against the LORD, Moab shall wallow in his vomit. And he shall also be in derision.

27 “For did you not deride Israel, as though he had been found among thieves? For when you speak of him, you are moved.

28 “O you who dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rocks! And be like the dove that makes her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.

29 “We have heard the pride of Moab (He is exceedingly prideful), his stoutness and his arrogancy, his pride and the haughtiness of his heart.

30 “I know his wrath,” says the LORD, “but it shall not be so. For his bluster is not right.

31 “Therefore, I will howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab, shall mourn for the men of Kir Heres.

32 “O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for you as I wept for Jazer! Your plants have gone over the sea. They have come to the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruits, and upon your vintage.

33 “And joy and gladness have been taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab. And I have caused wine to fail from the winepress. No one shall tread with shouting. Their shouting shall not be joyous.

34 “From the cry of Heshbon to Elealeh and to Jahaz they have made their noise, from Zoar to Horonaim (as a heifer of three years old), for the waters of Nimrim shall also be wasted.

35 “Moreover, I will cause to cease in Moab,” says the LORD, “him who offers in the high places, and him who burns incense to his gods.

36 “Therefore, My Heart shall sound for Moab like a flute. And My Heart shall sound like a flute for the men of Kir Heres, because the riches that he has gotten have perished.

37 “For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped. Upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.

38 “Mourning shall be upon all the housetops of Moab, and in all its streets. For I have broken Moab like a vessel in which is no pleasure,” says the LORD.

39 “They shall howl, saying, ‘How is he destroyed? How has Moab turned the back with shame?’ So shall Moab be a derision and a fear to all those around him.”

40 For thus says the LORD: “Behold, one shall flee as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.

41 “The cities are taken, and the strongholds are won, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that time shall be as the heart of a woman in labor.

42 “And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he has set himself up against the LORD.

43 “Fear, and pit, and snare upon you, O inhabitant of Moab,” says the LORD.

44 “He who escapes from the fear shall fall in the pit. And he who gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare. For I will bring upon it, upon Moab, the year of their visitation,” says the LORD.

45 “Those who fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon, because of the force. For the fire came out of Heshbon, and a flame from Sihon, and devoured the corner of Moab, and the top of the seditious children.

46 “Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh perish! For your sons are taken captives and your daughters led into captivity!

47 “Yet I will bring back the captivity of Moab in the latter days,” says the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

Psalm 25

25 To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul.

My God, I trust in You. Let me not be confounded. Do not let my enemies rejoice over me.

So all who hope in You shall not be ashamed. Let those who transgress without cause be confounded.

Show me Your ways, O LORD, and teach me Your paths.

Lead me forth in Your truth and teach me. For You are the God of my salvation. In You do I trust, all the day.

Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies, and Your lovingkindness. For they have been forever.

Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my rebellions. But according to Your kindness remember me, for Your goodness’ sake, O LORD.

Gracious and righteous are the LORD. Therefore, He will teach sinners in the way.

Those who are meek, He will guide in judgment and teach the humble His way.

10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.

11 For Your Name’s sake, O LORD, be merciful to my iniquity. For it is great.

12 What man is he who fears the LORD? He will teach him the way he shall choose.

13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the land.

14 The secret of the LORD is revealed to those who fear Him, and His Covenant, to give them understanding.

15 My eyes are ever toward the LORD. For He will bring my feet out of the net.

16 Turn Your face to me; and have mercy upon me. For I am desolate and poor.

17 The sorrows of my heart are enlarged. Draw me out of my troubles.

18 Look upon my affliction, and my travail, and forgive all my sins.

19 Behold my enemies, for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.

20 Keep my soul and deliver me. Let me not be confounded; for I trust in You.

21 Let my uprightness and equity preserve me; for my hope is in You.

22 Deliver Israel, O God, out of all its troubles. A Psalm of David.
