There was a man of one of the two Ramathaim Zophim, of Mount Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

And he had two wives. The name of one was Hannah and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children. But Hannah had no children.

And this man went up out of his city every year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts in Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli were, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the LORD.

And on a day when Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah, his wife, and to all her sons and daughters, portions.

But to Hannah he gave a worthy portion, for he loved Hannah and the LORD had made her barren.

And her adversary severely provoked her, trying to make her rage because the LORD had made her barren.

And so it was, as often as she went up to the House of the LORD, thus she provoked her, so that she wept and did not eat.

Then her husband, Elkanah, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart troubled? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

So Hannah rose up after they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh. And Eli the Priest sat upon a stool by one of the posts of the Temple of the LORD.

10 And she was troubled in her mind and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly.

11 Also she vowed a vow, and said, “O LORD of Hosts, if You will, look on the trouble of Your handmaid and remember me. And do not forget Your handmaid but give to Your handmaid a male child. Then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life. And no razor shall come upon his head.”

12 And as she continued praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth.

13 For Hannah spoke in her heart. Her lips only moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore, Eli thought she was drunk.

14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your drunkenness from you.”

15 Then Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

16 “Do not count your handmaid as a wicked woman, for of the abundance of my complaint and my grief I have spoken as of now.”

17 Then Eli answered, and said, “Go in peace. And the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.”

18 She said again, “Let your handmaid find grace in your sight.” So, the woman went her way and ate and no longer looked sad.

19 Then they rose up early and worshipped before the LORD and returned and came to their house, to Ramah. Now Elkanah knew Hannah, his wife. And the LORD remembered her.

20 For in process of time, Hannah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name, Samuel, saying, “Because, I have asked for him from the LORD.”

21 So, the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

22 But Hannah did not go up; for she said to her husband, “I will wait until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, so that he may appear before the LORD and stay there forever.

23 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Do what seems best to you. Wait until you have weaned him. Only, may the LORD accomplish His Word.” So, the woman waited and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

24 And when she had weaned him, she took him with her with three bullocks and an ephah of flour and a bottle of wine and brought him to the House of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child was young.

25 And they killed a bull and brought the child to Eli.

26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood with you here praying to the LORD!

27 “I prayed for this child; and the LORD has given me my desire which I asked of Him.

28 “Therefore, I also have given him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he shall be given to the LORD.” And he worshipped the LORD there.

Romans 1

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an Apostle, set apart to preach the Gospel of God

(which He had promised before by his Prophets in the Holy Scriptures);

concerning his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord (Who was made from the seed of David, according to the flesh,

and declared mightily to be the Son of God, touching the Spirit of sanctification by the resurrection from the dead);

by Whom we have received grace and Apostleship (that obedience might be given unto the faith) for His Name, among all the Gentiles,

among whom you are also called by Jesus Christ.

To all at Rome, beloved of God, called to be Saints: Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, I thank my God (through Jesus Christ) for you all, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.

For God is my witness (whom I serve in my spirit in the Gospel of His Son) that without ceasing I make mention of you,

10 always imploring in my prayers that by some means, at one time or other, I might have a prosperous journey, by the will of God, to come to you.

11 For I long to see you, that I might bestow among you some spiritual gift, that you might be strengthened.

12 That is to say that I might also be comforted with you, through our mutual faith, both yours and mine.

13 Now, my brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant of how often I have intended to come to you (but have been hindered) that I might also have some fruit among you, as I have among the other Gentiles.

14 I am debtor, both to the Greeks and to the barbarians; both to the wise and to the unwise.

15 Therefore, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the Gospel to you also who are in Rome.

16 For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. For it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes; to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

17 For by it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. As it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who withhold the truth in unrighteousness.

19 Because that which may be known of God is visible among them, for God has shown it to them.

20 For the invisible things of Him - that is, His eternal power and Godhead - are seen by the creation of the world; being perceived in His works, so that they are without excuse.

21 Because when they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were they thankful; but became vain in their thoughts. And their foolish heart was full of darkness.

22 When they professed themselves to be wise, they became fools.

23 For they turned the Glory of the incorruptible God to the likeness of the image of a corruptible man; and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and of creeping things.

24 Therefore, God also gave them up to the lusts of their hearts—unto uncleanness—to defile their own bodies among themselves.

25 They turned the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature, forsaking the Creator, Who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason, God gave them up to vile affections. For even their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature.

27 And likewise the men left the natural use of the woman and burned in their lust one toward another. And man committed indecency with man and received in themselves such recompense as was proper for their error.

28 For as they decided not to acknowledge God, so God delivered them up to a reprobate mind—to do those things which are not proper—

29 being full of all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, malice, full of envy, of murder, of strife, of deceit, maliciousness, gossips,

30 slanderers, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, unforgiving, merciless.

32 Those who, though they knew the Law of God (how that those who commit such things are worthy of death) not only do the same, but also favor those who do them.

Jeremiah 39

39 In the ninth year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, and all his army against Jerusalem. And they besieged it.

In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city was breached.

And all the princes of the king of Babel came in and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezer, Rabmag, with all the rest of the princes of the king of Babel.

And when Zedekiah, the king of Judah, saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled and went out of the city by night, through the king’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. And he went toward the wilderness.

But the Chaldean’s army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the desert of Jericho. And when they had captured him, they brought him to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, to Riblah, in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him.

Then the king of Babel killed the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. Also, the king of Babel killed all the nobles of Judah.

Moreover, he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him in chains, to carry him to Babel.

And the Chaldeans burnt the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

Then Nebuzaradan, the chief steward, carried away captive into Babel the remnant of the people who remained in the city, and those who had fled and fallen to him, with the rest of the people who remained.

10 But Nebuzaradan, the chief steward, left the poor who had nothing in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at that same time.

11 Now Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, gave orders concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan, the chief steward, saying,

12 “Take him and look after him and do him no harm. But do to him just as he shall say to you.”

13 So Nebuzaradan, the chief steward, sent Nebushasban, Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezar, Rabmag, and all the king of Babel’s princes.

14 Then they sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, so that he would carry him home. So he dwelt among the people.

15 Now the Word of the LORD came to Jeremiah while he was detained in the court of the prison, saying,

16 “Go and speak to Ebed-Melech, the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will bring My Words upon this city for misery, and not for prosperity. And they shall be accomplished before you on that day.

17 “But I will deliver you on that day,” says the LORD, “and you shall not be given into the hand of the men whom you fear.

18 “For I will surely deliver you, and you shall not fall by the sword. But your life shall be as a prize for you because you have put your trust in Me,” says the LORD.’”

Psalm 13-14

13 How long will You forget me, O LORD? Forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

How long shall I take counsel within myself, having weariness daily in my heart? How long shall my enemy be exalted above me?

Behold. Hear me, O LORD, my God. Enlighten my eyes, so that I do not sleep in death,

lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him.” And those who afflict me rejoice when I slide.

But I trust in Your mercy. My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt lovingly with me. To him who excels: A Psalm of David.

14 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They have corrupted; and done an abominable work. There is no one who does good.

The LORD looked down from Heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any who would understand, and seek God.

All have gone out of the way. They are all corrupt. There is no one who does good; no, not one.

Do not all the workers of iniquity know that they eat up my people as they eat bread? They do not call upon the LORD.

There they shall be taken with fear, because God is in the generation of the just.

You have shamed the counsel of the poor. But the LORD is his refuge.

Oh, give salvation to Israel out of Zion. When the LORD turns the captivity of His people, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad. Note that Psalm 14:5-7, which are put into the common translation (and may seem to some to be left out here) are not in the same Psalm in the Hebrew text. Rather, they are put in more fully to express the manners of the wicked. They are gathered out of Psalms 5, 10, 36, 140, and Isaiah 59. They are alleged by Saint Paul and placed together in Romans 3. A Psalm of David.
