Judges 21

21 Moreover, the men of Israel swore in Mizpah, saying, “None of us shall give his daughter to the Benjamites as a wife.”

And the people came to the House of God and stayed there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices and wept with great lamentation,

and said, “O LORD God of Israel! Why has this come to pass at this time in Israel, that this day one tribe of Israel should be missing?”

And the next day, the people rose up and made an Altar there, and offered Burnt Offerings and Peace Offerings.

Then, the children of Israel said, “Who is he among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up with the Congregation to the LORD?” For they had made a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, “Let him die the death.”

And the children of Israel were sorry for Benjamin, their brother, and said, “There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

“What shall we do about wives for those who remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them our daughters as wives?”

Also they said, “Is there any other tribe of Israel that did not come up to Mizpah to the LORD?” And behold, no one had come from Jabesh Gilead to the camp or to the Congregation.

For when the people were reviewed, behold, none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead were there.

10 Therefore, the Congregation sent twelve thousand men of the most valiant there and commanded them, saying, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, both women and children.

11 “And this is what you shall do: you shall utterly destroy all the males and all the women who have lain with men.”

12 And they found four hundred maids among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead, virgins who had known no man by lying with any male. And they brought them to the camp, to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13 Then the whole Congregation sent and spoke with the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon and called peaceably to them.

14 And Benjamin came back at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive from the women of Jabesh Gilead. But they did not have enough for them.

15 And the people were sorry for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16 Therefore, the elders of the Congregation said, “What shall we do about wives for the remnant? For the women of Benjamin have been destroyed.”

17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for those of Benjamin that escapes, so that a tribe is not destroyed out of Israel.

18 “However, we may not give them wives from our daughters.” For the children of Israel had sworn, saying, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”

19 Therefore they said, “Behold, there is a feast of the LORD every year in Shiloh (which is on the northern side of Bethel and on the eastern side of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem and to the south of Lebonah).”

20 Therefore, they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.

21 “And when you see that the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then every man come out of the vineyards and catch yourself a wife from the daughters of Shiloh and go into the land of Benjamin.

22 “And when their fathers or their brethren come to us to complain, we will say to them, ‘Have pity on them for our sakes, because we did not reserve a wife for each man in the war; and because you have not given to them before now, you have sinned.’”

23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took wives of those who danced, according to their number. They took them and went away and returned to their inheritance and repaired the cities and dwelt in them.

24 So, the children of Israel departed from there at that time, each man to his tribe and to his family. And each man went out from there to his inheritance.

25 In those days, there was no king in Israel. Every man did that which was good in his eyes.

Acts 25

25 Three days after Festus had come into the province, he went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem.

Then the High Priest and the chief of the Jews appeared before him against Paul. And they pleaded with him,

and asked (as a favor) if he would summon him to Jerusalem, so they could make an ambush and kill him along the way.

But Festus answered that Paul should be kept at Caesarea. And that he himself would go there shortly.

“Therefore, let those among you who are able come down,” he said, “And if there is any fault in the man, let them accuse him."

Now, after he had stayed among them no more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and the next day sat in the judgment seat, and commanded Paul to be brought.

And when he had come, the Jews who had come from Jerusalem, stood around him and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul (of which they could present no plain proof),

to which he answered that he had not offended in anything - either against the Law of the Jews, or against the Temple, or against Caesar.

Yet Festus, wanting to curry favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, “Will you go up to Jerusalem and be judged of these things before me there?”

10 Then Paul said, “I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you very well know.

11 “For if I have done wrong, or committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die. But if there is nothing in these things of which they accuse me, no one can deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar.”

12 Then, when Festus had spoken with the Council, he answered, “You have appealed to Caesar? To Caesar you shall go.”

13 And after some days, King Agrippa and Bernice came down to Caesarea to greet Festus.

14 And when they had stayed there many days, Festus stated Paul’s cause to the king, saying, “There is a certain man left in prison by Felix.

15 “When I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and elders of the Jews informed me of him and asked for a judgment against him.

16 “To whom I answered that it is not the custom of the Romans to deliver any man to the death before the accused has faced his accusers and has a place to defend himself concerning the crime.

17 “Therefore, when they had come here, I sat on the judgment seat the following day (without delay) and commanded the man to be brought forth.

18 “When the accusers stood up, they brought no accusation against him of such crimes as I suspected.

19 “But they had certain questions against him about their own religion, and about a certain Jesus (Who was dead, but Whom Paul affirmed to be alive).

20 “And because I was perplexed by such questions, I asked him if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and be judged there about these things.

21 “But because Paul had appealed to be put under guard until the examination of Augustus, I commanded that he be jailed until I could send him to Caesar.”

22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would also like to hear the man myself.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you shall hear him.”

23 And the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come (with great pomp) and had entered into the Common Hall with the chief captains and chief men of the city, Paul was brought forth at Festus’ commandment.

24 And Festus said, “King Agrippa, and all men who are present with us, you see this man about whom all the multitude of the Jews have petitioned me (both at Jerusalem and here) crying that he ought not to live any longer.

25 “But, I have found nothing he has done to be worthy of death. And seeing that he has appealed to Augustus, I have decided to send him.

26 “I have no certain thing to write to my lord concerning him. Therefore, I have brought him forth to you, and especially to you, King Agrippa, so that after examination, I might have something to write.

27 “For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner and not signify the charges against him.”

Jeremiah 35

35 The Word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,

“Go to the House of the Rechabites, and speak to them, and bring them into the House of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”

Then I took Jaazaniah, the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole House of the Rechabites,

and I brought them into the House of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah, the son of Shallum, the keeper of the treasure.

And I set pots full of wine and cups before the sons of the House of the Rechabites, and said to them, “Drink wine.”

But they said, “We will drink no wine. For Jonadab, the son of Rechab our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, neither you nor your sons, forever.

‘Nor shall you build house or sow seed or plant vineyard or have any of them. But you shall dwell in tents all your days, so that you may live a long time in the land where you are strangers.’

“Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, the son of Rechab our father, in all that he has charged us. And we never drink wine, neither we, our wives, our sons nor our daughters.

“Nor do we build houses for us to dwell in, nor do we have vineyard or field or seed.

10 “But we have remained in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 “But when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, came up into the land, we said, ‘Come and let us go to Jerusalem, for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and of the army of Aram.’ So we dwell in Jerusalem.”

12 Then came the Word of the LORD to Jeremiah, saying,

13 “Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Will you not receive doctrine to obey My Words,” says the LORD?

14 ‘The commandment of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons—that they should drink no wine—is surely kept. For to this day they drink none and obey their father’s commandment. Nevertheless, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you would not obey Me.

15 ‘I have also sent all My servants the Prophets to you, rising up early and sending, saying, “Turn now every man from his evil way, and amend your works, and do not go after other gods, to serve them. And you shall dwell in the land which I have given to you, and to your fathers.” But you would not incline your ear, nor obey Me.

16 ‘Surely the sons of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, have kept the commandment of their father, which he gave them. But this people has not obeyed Me.’

17 “Therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, all the misery that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they would not hear. And I have called to them, but they would not answer.’”

18 And Jeremiah said to the House of the Rechabites, “Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according to all that he has commanded you,

19 ‘therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab, the son of Rechab, shall not lack a man to stand before Me, forever.”’”

Psalm 7-8

O LORD my God, in You I put my trust. Save me from all who persecute me, and deliver me,

lest he devour my soul like a lion, and tear it in pieces, while there is no one to help.

O LORD, my God, if I have done this thing, if there is any wickedness in my hands,

if I have rewarded evil to him who had peace with me (indeed, I have delivered him without cause),

let the enemies persecute my soul and take it. Indeed, let him tread my life down upon the Earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

Arise, O LORD, in Your wrath, and lift up Yourself against the rage of my enemies. Awaken me to the judgment You have appointed.

So shall the congregation of the people surround You. For their sakes, therefore, return on High.

The LORD shall judge the people. Judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and according to my innocence in me.

Oh, let the malice of the wicked come to an end. But guide the just. For the righteous God tries the hearts and reins.

10 My defense is in God, Who preserves the upright in heart.

11 God judges the righteous, and he who denounces God, every day.

12 Unless he turns, He has sharpened His sword. He has bent His bow and made it ready.

13 He has also prepared deadly weapons. He will ordain His arrows for those who persecute.

14 Behold, he shall work with wickedness, for he has conceived mischief. But he shall bring forth a lie.

15 He has made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the pit he made.

16 His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his cruelty shall fall upon his own head.

17 I will praise the LORD according to His righteousness and will sing praise to the Name of the LORD Most High. To him who excels on Gittith: A Psalm of David.

O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the world; Who has set Your Glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouth of children and infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies; that You might cease the enemy and the avenger.

When I behold Your heavens, the works of Your fingers; the moon and the stars which You have ordained,

what is man that You are mindful of him; and the son of man that You seek him?

For You have made him a little lower than God and crowned him with glory and worship.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands. You have put all things under his feet,

all sheep and oxen; indeed, and the beasts of the field,

the birds of the air and the fish of the sea; that which passes through the paths of the seas.

O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the world! To him who excels upon Muth Labben: A Psalm of David.
