15 But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a kid, saying, “I will go in to my wife, into the chamber.” But her father would not allow him to go in.
2 And her father said, “I thought that you had hated her; therefore, I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? Please take her instead of the other.’
3 Then Samson said to them, “Now I am blameless regarding the Philistines, if I do them displeasure.”
4 And Samson went out and took three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned them tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst, between two tails.
5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he sent them out into the standing grain of the Philistines and burnt up both the ricks and the standing grain, with the vineyards and olives.
6 Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife and given her to his companion.” Then the Philistines came up and burnt her and her father with fire.
7 And Samson said to them, “Though you have done this, I will still be avenged of you; and then I will cease.”
8 So he struck them, hip and thigh, with a mighty plague. Then he went and dwelt in the top of the rock, Etam.
9 Then the Philistines came up and camped in Judah and were spread out in Lehi.
10 And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up to us? And they answered, “We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.”
11 Then, three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock, Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? Why, then, have you done this to us?” And he answered them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
12 Again they said to him, “We have come to bind you and to deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not fall upon me yourselves.”
13 And they answered him, saying, “No. We will bind you and deliver you into their hand, but we will not kill you.” And they bound him with two new ropes and brought him from the rock.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted at him. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him; and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire. For the bands loosed from his hands.
15 And he found a new jawbone of a donkey and put forth his hands and caught it and killed a thousand men with it.
16 Then Samson said, “With the jaw of a donkey, are heaps upon heaps! With the jaw of a donkey, I have killed a thousand men!”
17 And when he had stopped speaking, he cast away the jawbone from his hand, and called that place, Ramath Lehi.
18 And he was very thirsty, and called on the LORD, and said, “You have given this great deliverance into the hand of your servant. And now shall I die for thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”
19 Then God broke the cheek tooth that was in the jaw; and water came out from there. And when he had drunk, his spirit returned, and he was revived. Therefore, its name is called, En Hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.
20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines for twenty years.
19 And it so happened (while Apollos was at Corinth) that Paul, when he passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found some disciples,
2 and said to them, “Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” And they said to him, “We have not even heard whether there is a Holy Ghost.”
3 And he said to them, “Into what were you baptized then?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then Paul said, “Truly, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in Him Who should come after him; that is, in Christ Jesus.”
5 And when they heard it, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus.
6 So Paul laid his hands upon them, and the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spoke the tongues, and prophesied.
7 And there were, in all, about twelve men.
8 Moreover, he went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for three months, disputing and persuading in things concerning the Kingdom of God.
9 But when some were hardened and disobeyed, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he left them; and separated the disciples, and disputed daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10 And this was done for two years. So that all those who dwelt in Asia heard the Word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11 And God wrought no small miracles by the hands of Paul,
12 So that kerchiefs (or handkerchiefs) were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them. And the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then exorcists took in hand some of the vagabond Jews to name the Name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We command you by Jesus, Whom Paul preaches!”
14 And there were about seven sons of Sceva (a Jewish chief priest) who did this.
15 And the evil spirit answered, and said, “Jesus I acknowledge! And Paul I know! But who are you?”
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was, ran at them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house, naked and wounded.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks who dwelt at Ephesus. And fear came upon them all. And the Name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many who believed came and confessed and declared their works.
19 Also, many of those who used curious arts brought their books and burned them before all. And they priced them at fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 So the Word of God grew mightily, and prevailed.
21 Now when these things were completed, Paul purposed by the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia, and to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
22 So he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia. But he remained in Asia for a while.
23 And about that time there arose no small trouble about the Way.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius (a silversmith who made silver shrines of Diana) brought great gains to the craftsmen.
25 He called them together, along with workmen of similar things, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this trade we have wealth.
26 “Moreover, you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that things which are made with hands are not Gods.
27 “So that not only is our trade in danger of disrepute, but also the shrine of the great goddess Diana may be despised, causing her magnificence (which all Asia and the world worships) to be destroyed!”
28 Now when they heard it, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
29 And the whole city was full of confusion. And having caught Gaius and Aristarchus (men of Macedonia, and Paul’s companions on his journey), they rushed into the theatre with one mind.
30 And when Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples did not allow him.
31 Then, some of the rulers of Asia who were his friends sent word to him, begging him not to show himself in the theatre.
32 Therefore some cried one thing, and some another. For the assembly was out of order, and most of them did not know why they had come together.
33 And they brought Alexander out, the Jews thrusting him forward. Alexander then beckoned with his hand, wanting to make a defense to the people.
34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, they all began chanting for almost two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
35 Then the town clerk, after he had silenced the people, said, “Men of Ephesus, what man does not know that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which came down from heaven?
36 “Seeing, then, that these things are indisputable, you should calm down, and do nothing rashly.
37 “For you have brought these men here who have committed neither sacrilege nor blasphemy of your goddess.
38 “Therefore, if indeed Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the law is open. And there are proconsuls. Let them accuse one another.
39 “But, if you inquire about other matters, that shall be settled in a lawful assembly.
40 “For we are also in danger of being accused of sedition today, because there is no reason we may give for this riotous multitude.”
41 And after he had said this, he let the assembly depart.
28 And that same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah, the son of Azur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the House of the LORD, in the presence of the priests, and of all the people, and said,
2 “Thus speaks the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babel.
3 ‘Within two years’ time, I will bring into this place all the vessels of the LORD’s House which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, took away from this place and carried into Babel.
4 ‘And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all those who were carried away captive from Judah, and went into Babel,’ says the LORD. ‘For I will break the yoke of the king of Babel.’”
5 Then the Prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah — in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people who stood in the House of the LORD —
6 the Prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! The LORD so do! The LORD confirm your words which you have prophesied, to restore the vessels of the LORD’s House, and all that was carried captive from Babel, into this place.
7 “But hear now this Word that I will speak in your ears, and in the ears of all the people.
8 “The Prophets who have been before me, and before you, in time past, prophesied against many countries, and against great kingdoms, of war and of plagues and of pestilence.
9 “The Prophet who prophesies of peace, when the Word of the Prophet shall come to pass, it shall be known of that Prophet that the LORD has truly sent him.”
10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from the Prophet Jeremiah’s neck and broke it.
11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Even so, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, from the neck of all nations within the span of two years.’” And the Prophet Jeremiah went his way.
12 Then the Word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the Prophet, (after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from the neck of the Prophet Jeremiah) saying:
13 “Go and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: “You have broken the yokes of wood, but I have made yokes of iron from them.”
14 ‘For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, so that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel. For they shall serve him. And I have also given him the beasts of the field.”’”
15 Then the Prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Hear now, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you! But you make this people trust in a lie!
16 “Therefore, thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will cast you from the Earth. This year, you shall die, because you have spoken rebelliously against the LORD.’”
17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year, in the seventh month.
14 And two days before the Feast of the Passover, and of Unleavened Bread, the chief priests and scribes sought how they might take Jesus secretly, and put Him to death.
2 “But,” they said, “Not on the feast day, or else there may be unrest among the people.”
3 And when He was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at table, there came a woman with a box of ointment (of spikenard, very costly). And she broke the box and poured it on His head.
4 Therefore some whispered angrily among themselves, and said, “To what end is this waste of ointment?
5 “For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denari, and the money given to the poor.” And they murmured against her.
6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble yourselves with her? She has done a good work for Me.
7 “For you have the poor with you always. And when you will you may do them good. But Me you shall not have always.
8 “She has done what she could. She came beforehand to anoint My body for the burying.
9 “Truly I say to you, wherever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done, shall be spoken of in remembrance of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, to betray Him to them.
11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised that they would give him money. Therefore, he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.
12 Now the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, His disciples said to Him, “Where will You have us go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”
13 Then He sent forth two of His disciples, and said to them, “Go into the city, and there a man shall meet you bearing a pitcher of water. Follow him.
14 “And wherever he goes in, say to the good man of the house, ‘The Master says, “Where is the lodging where I shall eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
15 “And he will show you an upper chamber, which is large, trimmed and prepared. Make it ready for us there.”
16 So His disciples went forth, and came to the city, and found all as He had said to them, and made ready the Passover.
17 And in the evening, He came with the twelve.
18 And as they sat at table and ate, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, that one of you who eats with Me shall betray Me.”
19 Then they began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another, “Is it I?”
20 And He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve who dips with Me in the platter.
21 “Truly the Son of Man goes His way, as it is written of Him. But woe be to that man, by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It had been good for that man if he had never been born.”
22 And as they ate, Jesus took the bread. And when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take. Eat. This is My body.”
23 Also, He took the cup. And when He had given thanks, He gave it to them. And they all drank of it.
24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many.
25 “Truly I say to you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine until that day that I drink it new, in the Kingdom of God.”
26 And when they had sung a Psalm, they went out to the mount of Olives.
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you shall desert Me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’
28 “But after I am risen, I will go into Galilee before you.”
29 And Peter said to Him, “Although all men should desert You, yet would not I!”
30 Then Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, this day, even this night, before the cock crows twice, you shall deny Me three times.”
31 But he said more earnestly, “If I should die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said they all.
32 Afterward, they came into a place named Gethsemane. Then He said to His disciples, “Sit here, till I have prayed.”
33 And He took with him Peter, and James, and John. And He began to be troubled and in great heaviness.
34 And He said to them, “My soul is very heavy, even to the death. Wait here, and watch.”
35 So He went forward a little, and fell down on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible that hour might pass from Him.
36 And He said, “Abba, Father. All things are possible for You. Take away this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not that I will, but that You will, be done.”
37 Then He came, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon! Asleep? Could you not watch one hour!?
38 “Watch. And pray. So that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is ready, but the flesh is weak.”
39 And again He went away, and prayed, and spoke the same words.
40 And He returned and found them asleep again. For their eyes were heavy, nor did they know what they should answer Him.
41 And He came the third time and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
42 “Rise up! Let us go! Lo, he who betrays Me is here!”
43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, came Judas (who was one of the twelve) and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs from the chief priests and scribes and elders.
44 And he who betrayed Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whoever I shall kiss, it is He. Take Him and lead Him away safely.”
45 And as soon as he had come, he went immediately to Him, and said, “Hail, Master,” and kissed Him.
46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him.
47 And one of them who stood by drew out a sword and struck a servant of the High Priest and cut off his ear.
48 And Jesus answered and said to them, “You’ve come out as against a thief, with swords and with clubs, to take Me.
49 “I was with you daily, teaching in the Temple, and you did not take Me. But this is done so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.”
50 Then they all deserted Him and fled.
51 And a certain young man followed Him, clothed in linen upon his bare body. And they seized him.
52 But he left his linen cloth and fled from them naked.
53 So they led Jesus away to the High Priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together to Him.
54 And Peter followed Him at a distance, even into the hall of the High Priest, and sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put Him to death but found none.
56 For many bore false witness against Him. But their testimonies did not agree.
57 Then some of them arose and bore false witness against Him, saying,
58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with hands. And within three days I will build another, made without hands.’”
59 But their testimonies did not agree.
60 Then the High Priest stood up amongst them and asked Jesus, saying, “Answer You nothing? Why should these bear witness against You?”
61 But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again, the High Priest asked Him and said to Him, “Are you the Christ; the Son of the Blessed?”
62 And Jesus said, “I am He. And you shall see the Son of Man sit at the right hand of power, coming in the clouds of Heaven.”
63 Then the High Priest tore his clothes, and said, “What have we anymore need of witnesses?!
64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think!?” And they all condemned Him to be worthy of death.
65 And some began to spit at Him, and to cover His face, and to beat Him with fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the sergeants slapped Him.
66 And as Peter was beneath in the hall, one of the maids of the High Priest came.
67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and said, “You were also with Jesus of Nazareth.”
68 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him. Nor do I understand what you say.” Then he went out onto the porch. And the cock crew.
69 Then another maid saw him and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.”
70 But he denied it again. And soon after, those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them! For you are of Galilee! And your speech is similar!”
71 And he began to curse, and swear, saying, “I do not know this Man of Whom you speak!”
72 Then the cock crew the second time. And Peter remembered the Word that Jesus had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows twice, you shall deny Me three times.’ And feeling the weight of that, he wept.
