Judges 13

13 But the children of Israel continued to commit wickedness in the sight of the LORD. And the LORD delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.

Then there was a man in Zorah, of the family of the Danites, named Manoah, whose wife was barren and did not bear.

And the Angel of the LORD appeared to the woman, and said to her, “Behold, now you are barren, and do not bear. But you shall conceive and bear a son.

“And now, therefore, be careful that you drink no wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing.

“For lo, you shall conceive and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head. For the child shall be a Nazirite to God, from his birth. And he shall begin to save Israel out of the hands of the Philistines.”

Then the wife came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and the appearance of him was like the appearance of the Angel of God exceedingly fearful. But I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.

“But he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And now you shall drink no wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God, from his birth to the day of his death.’”

Then Manoah prayed to the LORD, and said, “Please, my Lord, let the man of God, whom You sent, now come back to us and teach us what we shall do for the child after he is born.”

And God heard the voice of Manoah. And the Angel of God came to the wife again, as she sat in the field. But Manoah, her husband, was not with her.

10 And the wife hurried and ran and told her husband and said to him, “Behold, the man who came to me today has appeared to me!”

11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “Yes.”

12 Then Manoah said, “Now let your saying come to pass at this time. How shall the boy live and what shall be his work?”

13 And the Angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “The woman must be careful to do all that I said to her.

14 “She may eat of nothing that comes from the vine. She shall not drink wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing. Let her observe all that I have commanded her.”

15 Manoah then said to the Angel of the LORD, “Please, let us detain you until we have made a kid ready for you.”

16 And the Angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Though you make me stay, I will not eat of your bread. And if you would make a Burnt Offering, offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah did not know that it was an Angel of the LORD.

17 Again, Manoah said to the Angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that when your saying comes to pass, we may honor you?”

18 And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask my name, which is secret?”

19 Then Manoah took a kid, with a Meat Offering, and offered it upon a stone, to the LORD. And He did wonders, while Manoah and his wife looked on.

20 For when the flame came up toward Heaven from the Altar, the Angel of the LORD ascended up in the flame of the Altar. And Manoah and his wife beheld it and fell on their faces to the ground.

21 And the Angel of the LORD no longer appeared to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah knew that it was an Angel of the LORD.

22 And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God.”

23 But his wife said to him, “If the LORD wished to kill us, He would not have received a Burnt Offering, and a Meat Offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or told us such things at this time.”

24 And the wife bore a son and called his name, Samson. And the child grew; and the LORD blessed him.

25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to strengthen him in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Acts 17

17 Now as they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

And Paul (as was his custom) went in and argued with them from the Scriptures for three Sabbaths,

Opening, and alleging, that Christ must have suffered and risen again from the dead; and saying, “This is Jesus Christ. Whom I preach to you.”

And some of them believed (also a great multitude of the Greeks who feared God, and not a few of the chief women) and joined with Paul and Silas.

But the Jews who did not believe - moved with envy – took some wicked fellows from the marketplace. And when they had assembled a multitude, they made a disturbance in the city. And they assaulted the house of Jason and sought to bring them out to the people.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers before the heads of the city, crying, “Those who have subverted the state of the world are here also!

“Jason has received them. And they all act against the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another King - Jesus!”

And they troubled the people and the heads of the city, when they heard these things.

Nevertheless, when they had received bail from Jason and the others, they let them go.

10 And the brothers immediately sent away Paul and Silas to Berea by night. And when they had gotten there, they entered into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 Also, these were more noble men than those at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed, and honorable Greek women, and not a few men.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica knew that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also, and moved the people.

14 And immediately the brothers sent Paul away, to go to the sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.

15 And those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens. And when they had received a commandment for Silas and Timothy to come to him at once, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, when he saw the idolatry in the city, his spirit was pricked within him.

17 Therefore he disputed daily - with the Jews in the synagogue, with the religious, and in the marketplace - with whomever he met.

18 Then some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers disputed with him. And some said, “What will this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of strange gods.” (because he preached Jesus to them, and the resurrection.)

19 And they took him, and brought him to Mars’ Hill, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

20 “For you bring some strange things to our ears. Therefore, we want to know what these things mean.”

21 For all the Athenians (and strangers who dwelt there) gave themselves to nothing else but either telling or hearing something new.

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ Hill, and said, “Men of Athens! I perceive that in all things you are very fearful of gods.

23 “For as I passed by and observed your objects of worship, I found an altar whereupon was written, ‘TO THE UNKNOWN GOD’. Him then, Whom you ignorantly worship, I proclaim to you.

24 “God - Who made the world and all things that therein are - seeing that He is Lord of Heaven and Earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

25 “Nor is He worshipped with man’s hands as though He needed anything (seeing He gives life to all, and breath, and all things).

26 “And He has made, from one blood, all nations of mankind to dwell on all the face of the Earth; and has assigned the seasons (which were pre-ordained) and the boundaries of their dwellings,

27 “so that they should seek the Lord; that perhaps they might have groped after Him and found Him. Though doubtless He is not far from each one of us.

28 “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being, as some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His family’.

29 “Therefore, since we are the family of God, we ought not to think that the Divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, sculpted by art and the invention of man.

30 “God, having overlooked these times of ignorance, now admonishes all mankind, everywhere, to repent.

31 “Because He has appointed a Day on the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man Whom He has appointed. He has given us all this assurance by raising Him from the dead.”

32 Now when they had heard of the resurrection from the dead, some mocked. And others said, “We will hear from you again about this.”

33 And so Paul departed from among them.

34 But some men joined Paul and believed. Among them were Dionysius Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Jeremiah 26

26 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this Word from the LORD, saying,

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand in the court of the LORD’s House. And speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD’s House, all the words that I Command you to speak to them. Do not hold back a Word.

‘Perhaps they will listen, and everyone will turn from his evil way, so that I may relent from the plague which I have determined to bring upon them because of the wickedness of their works.

‘And you shall say to them, “Thus says the LORD: ‘If you will not hear Me, to walk in My Law which I have set before you,

‘and to hear the words of My servants, the Prophets, whom I sent you (both rising up early and sending), and will not obey,

‘Then I will make this House like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all nations of the Earth.’”’”

So the priests and the Prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the House of the LORD.

Now when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had Commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the Prophets and all the people took him, and said, “You shall die the death!

“Why have you prophesied in the Name of the LORD, saying, ‘This House shall be like Shiloh, and ‘This city shall be desolate without an inhabitant?’” And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the House of the LORD.

10 And when the Princes of Judah heard of these things, they came up from the king’s house into the House of the LORD and sat down in the entry of the New Gate of the LORD’s House.

11 Then spoke the priests and the Prophets to the princes and to all the people, saying, “This man is worthy to die! For he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”

12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, “The LORD has sent me to prophesy all the things that you have heard against this House and against this city.

13 “Therefore, now, amend your ways and your works and hear the Voice of the LORD your God, so that the LORD may relent from the plague that He has pronounced against you.

14 “As for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as you think good and right.

15 “But know for certain that if you put me to death, you shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and upon its inhabitants. For truly the LORD has sent me to you, to speak all these words in your ears.”

16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the Prophets, “This man is not worthy to die! For he has spoken to us in the Name of the LORD our God!”

17 Then some of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,

18 “Micah the Morashite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, “Thus says the LORD of Hosts: ‘Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall be a heap, and the mountain of the House shall be as the high places of the forest.’

19 “Did Hezekiah, king of Judah, and all Judah, put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and pray before the LORD? And did not the LORD relent from the plague that he had pronounced against them? But we procure great evil against our souls.”

20 And there was also a man who prophesied in the Name of the LORD: Urijah, the son of Shemaiah, of Kirjath Jearim; who prophesied against this city and against this land, according to all the words of Jeremiah.

21 Now when Jehoiakim the king, with all his men of power and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to kill him. But when Urijah heard it, he was afraid and fled, and went into Egypt.

22 Then Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt — Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain with him — into Egypt.

23 And they fetched Urijah out of Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the children of the people.

24 But the hand of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, was with Jeremiah, so that they would not give him into the hand of the people, to put him to death.

Mark 12

12 And He began to speak to them in parables, “A certain man planted a vineyard, and surrounded it with a hedge, and dug a pit for the winepress, and built a tower on it, and leased it to farmers, and went into a strange country.

“And at the right time, he sent a servant to them, so that he might receive word about the fruit of the vineyard.

“But they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

“And again he sent another servant to them. And they cast stones at him, and struck his head, and sent him away shamefully-handled.

“And again he sent another. And him they killed - and many others - beating some and killing some.

“He still had one son, his dear beloved. Lastly, he also sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But the farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him. And the inheritance shall be ours.’

“So they took him and killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.

“What shall then the Lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy these farmers and give the vineyard to others.

10 “Have you not read so much as this Scripture, ‘The stone which the builders refused, has become the cornerstone.

11 “‘This was done by the Lord. And it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12 Then they planned to take Him. But they feared the people. For they perceived that He spoke that parable against them. Therefore, they left Him alone and went their way.

13 And they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him, that they might catch Him in His words.

14 And when they came, they said to Him, “Master, we know that You are true, and do not care what anyone says. For You do not consider the person of man but teach the way of God truly. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

15 “Should we give it, or should we not give it?” But He knew their hypocrisy, and said to them, “Why do you tempt me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it.”

16 So they brought it, and He said to them, “Whose image and superscription is this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”

17 Then Jesus answered, and said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God, those that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him.

18 Then the Sadducees came to Him (who say there is no resurrection). And they asked Him, saying,

19 “Master, Moses wrote to us, ‘If any man’s brother dies and leaves his wife, and leaves no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.’

20 “There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife. And when he died, he left no heir.

21 “Then the second took her and died, leaving no heir, and the third likewise.

22 “So these seven had her and left no heir. Last of all the wife died also.

23 “In the resurrection then, when they shall rise again, whose wife shall she be? For seven had her as their wife.”

24 Then Jesus answered, and said to them, “Are you not therefore deceived, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?

25 “For when they shall rise again from the dead, neither men nor wives marry, but are as the angels which are in Heaven.

26 “And as for the dead, they shall rise again. Have you not read in the book of Moses how, in the bush, God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’

27 “God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly deceived.”

28 Then came one of the scribes who had heard them disputing together. And perceiving that he had answered them well, he asked him, “Which is the first Commandment of all?

29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the Commandments is, ‘Hear, Israel, The Lord our God is the only Lord.

30 “‘You shall therefore love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first Commandment.

31 “And the second is similar; that is, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other Commandment greater than these.”

32 Then that scribe said to Him, “Well, Master, you have said the truth; that there is one God, and that there is none but He,

33 “And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 Then when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask Him any question after that.

35 And Jesus answered and said (teaching in the Temple), “How can the scribes say that Christ is the Son of David?

36 “For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.

37 “Then David himself called him Lord. By what means is He then his son?” And many people heard Him gladly.

38 Moreover He said to them in His doctrine, “Beware of the scribes, who love to go around in long robes and love greetings in the markets,

39 “and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the first rooms at feasts.

40 “They devour widows’ houses, even under a color of long prayers. These shall receive the greater damnation.”

41 And as Jesus sat near the treasury, He saw how much money the people cast into the treasury. And many of the rich men cast in much.

42 And there came a certain poor widow. And she threw in two lepta (which make a kodrantes).

43 Then He called His disciples to Him, and said to them, “Truly I say to you, that this poor widow has cast more in than all those who have cast into the treasury.

44 “For they all cast in out of their excess. But she, out of her poverty, cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
