Land for Ephraim and Manasseh

16 This is the ·land [allotment] the ·tribe [L sons; descendants] of Joseph received. It started at the Jordan River near Jericho and continued to the ·waters [springs] of Jericho, just east of the city. The border went up from Jericho to the ·mountains [hill country] of Bethel [C located northwest of Jersusalem]. Then it continued from Bethel ·(also called Luz) [or to Luz] ·to [crossing over to] the Arkite border at Ataroth. From there it went west to the ·border [L territory] of the Japhletites and continued to the area of the Lower Beth Horon. Then it went to Gezer and ended at the sea.

So Manasseh and Ephraim, sons of Joseph, received their ·land [inheritance].

This is the land that was given to the ·family groups [clans] of Ephraim: Their border [L of their inheritance] started at Ataroth Addar in the east, went to Upper Beth Horon, and then to the sea. From Micmethath [L on the north] it turned eastward toward Taanath Shiloh and ·continued eastward [or passing by it on the east] to Janoah. Then it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and to Naarah. It continued until it touched Jericho and stopped at the Jordan River. The border went from Tappuah west to Kanah ·Ravine [Valley; or Brook] and ended at the sea. This is all the ·land [inheritance] that was given to each ·family group [clan] in the tribe of the Ephraimites. ·Many of the towns were actually within Manasseh’s borders, but the people of Ephraim got those towns and their villages [L …and the cities set apart for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities and their villages]. 10 The Ephraimites could not ·force the Canaanites to leave [drive out the Canaanites living in] Gezer, so the Canaanites still live among the Ephraimites today, but they became ·slaves [forced laborers] of the Ephraimites.

17 Then land was ·given [allotted] to the tribe of Manasseh, Joseph’s ·first son [firstborn; Gen. 41:51]. Manasseh’s ·first son [firstborn] was Makir [Gen. 50:23], the ·father of Gilead [or ancestor of the Gileadites]. ·Makir was a great soldier [or His descendants were great solders], so the lands of Gilead and Bashan were given to his family. ·Land [An allotment] was also given to the other ·family groups of Manasseh [L sons/descendants of Manasseh, by their clans]—[L the sons/descendants of] Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were ·all the other sons [the male descendants] of Manasseh son of Joseph.

Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, who was the son of Gilead, who was the son of Makir, who was the son of Manasseh. Zelophehad had no sons, but he had five daughters, named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They ·went to [presented themselves before] Eleazar the priest [14:1; 19:51; 21:1] and to Joshua son of Nun and all the leaders. They said, “The Lord told Moses to give us land ·like the men received [L among/or along with our brothers; Num. 26:33; 27:1–7].” So ·Eleazar [or Joshua; L he] obeyed the Lord and gave the daughters ·some land [an inheritance], ·just like [or among] the brothers of their father. So the tribe of Manasseh had ten sections of land ·west of the Jordan River and two more sections, [L in addition to] Gilead and Bashan [12:3–4], on the east side of the Jordan River. The daughters of Manasseh received ·land just as the sons did [L an inheritance among/along with his sons]. Gilead was given to the rest of the ·families [sons; descendants] of Manasseh.

The ·lands [border] of Manasseh ·were in the area between Asher and [L ran from Asher to] Micmethath, ·near [or east of] Shechem. The border went south to the ·En Tappuah area [L inhabitants of En Tappuah], which belonged to Manasseh, except for the town of Tappuah. It was along the border of Manasseh’s land and belonged to the ·sons [people; tribe] of Ephraim. The border of Manasseh continued south to Kanah ·Ravine [Valley; or Brook]. The cities in this area of Manasseh belonged to Ephraim. Manasseh’s border was on the north side of the ravine and went to the sea. 10 The land to the south belonged to Ephraim, and the land to the north belonged to Manasseh. The ·Mediterranean Sea [L sea] was the western border. The border touched Asher’s land on the north and Issachar’s land on the east.

11 In the areas of Issachar and Asher, the people of Manasseh ·owned [included; had] these towns: Beth ·Shan [or Shean] and its small towns; Ibleam and its small towns; the people who lived in Dor and its small towns; the people in ·Naphoth Dor [or Dor, that is, Naphoth; L Dor…the third is Naphoth] and its small towns; the people who lived in Taanach and its small towns; the people in Megiddo and its small towns. 12 ·Manasseh [L The sons/descendants of Manasseh] was not able to defeat those cities, so the Canaanites ·continued [persisted; were determined] to live there. 13 When the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] grew strong, they forced the Canaanites to work for them, although they did not ·force them to leave the land [drive them out completely; Judg. 1:27–28].

14 The ·people from the tribes [sons/descendants] of Joseph said to Joshua, “You gave ·us [L me] only one ·area of land [L portion as an inheritance], but ·we are many [L I am a great] people. Why did you give us only one part of all the land the Lord gave his people?”

15 And Joshua answered them, “If you have too many people, go up to the forest and ·make a place [clear out land] for yourselves to live there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaites. The ·mountain [hill] country of Ephraim is too small for you.”

16 The ·people [L sons/descendants] of Joseph said, “It is true. The ·mountain [hill] country of Ephraim is not enough for us, but the Canaanites who live in the valley have ·strong armies [L iron chariots], both in Beth Shan and all the small towns in that area, and in the Valley of Jezreel.”

17 Then Joshua said to the ·people [L house] of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh, “There are many of you, and you have great power. You should be given more than one ·share of land [allotment]. 18 You also will have the ·mountain [hill] country. It is a forest, but you can ·cut down the trees and make it a good place to live [L clear it and possess its farthest border]. You will own all of it because you will ·force the Canaanites to leave the land [drive out the Canaanites] even though they have ·powerful weapons [L iron chariots] and are strong.”

Psalm 148

The World Should Praise the Lord

148 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the ·skies [heavens].
    Praise him ·high above the earth [in the heights].
Praise him, all you ·angels [messengers].
    Praise him, all ·you armies of heaven [his hosts; C the angelic army].
Praise him, sun and moon.
    Praise him, all you ·shining stars [L stars of light].
Praise him, ·highest heavens [L heaven of heavens]
    and you waters above the ·sky [heavens].
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·they were created by his command [L he commands and they were created; Gen. 1].
He ·put them in place [L made them stand] forever and ever;
    he made a ·law [statute; requirement; ordinance] that will never ·change [pass].

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you large sea ·animals [monsters; C like Leviathan; 74:12–17; 104:26; Gen. 1:21; Job 3:8; 41; Is. 27:1] and all the ·oceans [deeps],
·lightning [L fire] and hail, snow and ·mist [cloud; or smoke],
    and stormy winds that ·obey him [L do his word],
mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    crawling animals and birds,
11 kings of the earth and all ·nations [peoples],
    princes and all ·rulers [judges] of the earth,
12 young men and women,
    old people and ·children [youth].

13 Praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·he [L his name] alone is ·great [exalted].
    ·He is more wonderful than [L His splendor is over] heaven and earth.
14 God has ·given his people a king [exalted/raised a horn over his people; C an animal’s horn symbolizes power].
    He should be praised by all ·who belong to him [his saints/loyal ones];
he should be praised by the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], the people ·closest to his heart [L nearest to him].

Praise the Lord!

Jeremiah 8

“‘The Lord says: At that time they will ·remove [L bring out] from their tombs the bones of Judah’s kings and ·officers [princes], priests and prophets, and the ·people [inhabitants] of Jerusalem. The bones will be spread on the ground under the sun, moon, and ·stars [L the hosts of heaven] that the people loved and served and went after and searched for and ·worshiped [bowed down to]. No one will gather up the bones and bury them. So they will be like dung on the ground. ·I will force the people of Judah to leave their homes and their land. Those of this evil family who are not dead will wish they were [L Death will be preferred to life by all the remnant of those who remain from this evil clan in all the places where I have driven them], says the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts].’

Sin and Punishment

“Say to them [C the people of Judah]: ‘This is what the Lord says:

When people fall down, don’t they get up again?
    And when someone goes the wrong way, doesn’t he turn back?
Why, then, have the people of Jerusalem gone the wrong way
    and not turned back?
They ·believe their own lies [persisted in deceit/treachery]
    and refuse to turn back.
I have ·listened to them very carefully [paid attention and listened],
    but they do not say what is ·right [honest].
They do not ·feel sorry about their wicked ways [L repent of evil],
    saying, “What have I done?”
Each person ·goes his own way [runs his course],
    like a horse ·charging [plunging] into a battle.
Even the storks in the ·sky [heavens]
    know ·the right times to do things [their appointed times].
The ·doves [turtledoves], ·swifts [or swallows], and ·thrushes [or cranes]
    ·know [observe] when it is time to ·migrate [return].
But my people don’t know
    ·what the Lord wants them to do [L the ordinances/judgments of the Lord].

“‘·You keep saying [L How can you say…?], “We are wise,
    ·because we have the teachings of the Lord [L and the teachings/laws/instructions of the Lord are with us].”
But actually, ·those who explain the Scriptures
    have written lies with their pens [L the false pens of the scribes have made it a lie].
These wise teachers ·refused to listen to [L rejected] the word of the Lord,
    so ·they are not really wise at all [L what wisdom is in them?].
They will be ·ashamed [humiliated].
    They will be ·shocked [stunned; astonished] and trapped.
10 So I will give their wives to other men
    and their fields to ·new owners [or conquerors].
Everyone, from the least important to the greatest,
    is greedy for ·money [unjust gain].
Even the prophets and priests
    all ·tell lies [act falsely; are deceptive; 6:13].
11 They tried to heal my people’s ·serious injuries [fracture]
    as if they were small wounds.
They said, “·It’s all right, it’s all right [L Peace, peace].”
    But ·really, it is not all right [L there is no peace; 6:14].
12 They should be ashamed of the ·terrible way they act [abominations they do],
    but they are not ashamed at all.
    They don’t even know how to blush [C about their sins].
So they will fall, along with ·everyone else [L those who fall].
    They will ·be thrown to the ground [stumble] ·when [L at the time] I punish them, says the Lord [6:15].

13 “‘I will ·take away their crops [L gather them; or bring an end to them], says the Lord.
    There will be no grapes on the vine
and no figs on the fig tree.
    Even the leaves will dry up.
I will take away what I gave them.’”

14 “Why are we just sitting here?
    Let’s ·get [gather] together!
We have sinned against the Lord,
    so he has given us poisoned water to drink.
Come, let’s ·run [L go] to the ·strong, walled [fortified] cities.
    The Lord our God has ·decided that we must die [doomed us],
    so let’s ·die [meet our doom] there.
15 We hoped to have peace,
    but ·nothing good has come [L there is none].
We hoped for a time when he would heal us,
    but only terror has come.
16 From the land of Dan [C in the far north of Israel, the direction from which the Babylonians attacked],
    the snorting of its [C the enemy’s] horses is heard.
    The ·ground [earth] shakes from the neighing of their ·large horses [stallions].
They have come and ·destroyed [L consumed]
    the land and everything in it,
    the city and all ·who live there [its inhabitants].”

17 “Look! I am sending poisonous snakes [C to attack you].
    These ·snakes [vipers] cannot be charmed,
    and they will bite you,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Sadness

18 God, ·you are my comfort when I am very sad [L my cheerfulness is gone; grief has come on me]
    and ·when I am afraid [L my heart is sick].
19 Listen to the ·sound [L cry of distress] of ·my people [L the daughter of my people].
    They cry from a faraway land:
    “Isn’t the Lord still in ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple]?
    Isn’t ·Jerusalem’s [L its] king still there?”

But God says, “Why did the people make me angry ·by worshiping idols [L with their images],
useless foreign idols?”

20 And the people say, “Harvest time is over;
    summer has ended,
and we have not been ·saved [rescued].”

21 Because my people are ·crushed [broken; fractured], I am ·crushed [broken; fractured].
    I ·cry loudly [mourn; lament; wail] and ·am afraid for them [L horror has seized me].
22 Isn’t there balm [C the resin of the storax tree used as medicine] in the land of Gilead [C southern section of the Transjordan region]?
    Isn’t there a doctor there?
    So why ·aren’t the hurts of my people healed [L is there no new skin on the wound of the daughter of my people]?

Matthew 22

A Story About a Wedding Feast(A)

22 Jesus again used ·stories [parables] to teach them. He said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding ·feast [banquet] for his son. When the ·feast [banquet] was ready, the king sent his servants to ·tell [inform; call] the people who had been invited, but they refused to come.

“Then the king sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited that my ·feast [banquet] is ready. I have killed my best ·bulls [or oxen] and [L fattened] calves for the dinner, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding ·feast [banquet].’

“But the people ·refused to listen [paid no attention] to the servants and ·left to do other things [went their own way]. One went to ·work in his field [his field/farm], and another went to his business. ·Some of the other people [or The rest] grabbed the servants, ·beat [mistreated; insulted] them, and killed them. The king was furious and sent his army to ·kill [destroy] the murderers and burn their city [C probably an allusion to the destruction of Jerusalam in ad 70].

“After that, the king said to his servants, ‘The wedding ·feast [banquet] is ready. I invited those people, but they ·were not worthy [do not deserve] to come. So go to the ·street corners [crossroads; or main roads] and invite everyone you find to come to my ·feast [banquet].’ 10 So the servants went into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and ·bad [evil]. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 [L But] When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man who was not dressed ·for a wedding [in wedding clothes]. 12 The king said, ‘Friend, how were you allowed to come in here? You are not dressed for a wedding.’ But the man ·said nothing [was speechless/silent]. 13 So the king told some servants, ‘Tie this man’s hands and feet. Throw him out into the ·darkness [darkness outside; or outermost darkness], where ·people will cry and grind their teeth with pain [L there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth; C symbols of agony and torment].’

14 “·Yes [L For], many are ·invited [called], but only a few are chosen.”

Is It Right to Pay Taxes or Not?(B)

15 Then the Pharisees left that place and ·made plans [plotted] to ·trap [catch] Jesus in ·saying something wrong [his words]. 16 They sent some of their own ·followers [disciples] and some people from the group called Herodians [C a political group that supported king Herod and his family]. They said, “Teacher, we know that you are ·an honest man [true; sincere] and that you teach ·the truth [with sincerity/honesty] about God’s way. You are not ·afraid of [L concerned about] what other people think about you, because you ·pay no attention to who they are [play no favorites; are impartial; aren’t swayed by appearances]. 17 So tell us what you think. Is it ·right [permissible; lawful] to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” [C Saying “yes” would anger Jews who hated Roman rule; saying “no” could result in being charged with insurrection.]

18 But knowing ·that these leaders were trying to trick him [their evil/malicious motives], Jesus said, “You hypocrites! Why are you ·trying to trap [testing] me? 19 Show me a coin used for paying the tax.” So the men ·showed him a coin [L brought him a denarius; C a Roman coin worth a day’s wages]. 20 Then Jesus asked, “Whose ·image [likeness; portrait] and ·name [inscription] are on the coin?”

21 The men answered, “Caesar’s.” [C Ironically, the religious leaders were carrying coins bearing the idolatrous image of Caesar.]

Then Jesus said to them, “·Give [T Render] to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and give to God the things that are God’s.”

22 When the men heard what Jesus said, they were amazed and left him and went away.

Some Sadducees Try to Trick Jesus(C)

23 That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and asked him a question. (Sadducees believed that people would not rise from the dead.) 24 They said, “Teacher, Moses said if a married man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and ·have children [L raise up offspring/seed] for him [Deut. 25:5]. 25 Once there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died. Since he had no ·children [offspring], his brother married the widow. 26 Then the second brother also died. The same thing happened to the third brother ·and all the other brothers [L down to the seventh]. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Since all seven men had married her, ·when people rise from the dead [L at the resurrection], whose wife will she be?”

29 Jesus answered, “You ·don’t understand [are mistaken/deceived], because you don’t know what the Scriptures say, and you don’t know about the power of God. 30 [L For] ·When people rise from the dead [L At the resurrection], they will not marry, nor will they be given to someone to marry. They will be like the angels in heaven. 31 ·Surely you have read [L Have you not read…?] what God said to you ·about rising [concerning the resurrection] from the dead. 32 God said, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob [Ex. 3:6; C God is still the God of the patriarchs, so they must have a continued existence after death].’ God is the God of the living, not the dead.”

33 When the people heard this, they were ·amazed [astounded] at Jesus’ teaching.

The Most Important Command(D)

34 When the Pharisees learned that ·the Sadducees could not argue with Jesus’ answers to them [L Jesus had silenced the Sadducees], the Pharisees met together. 35 One Pharisee, who was an expert on the law of Moses, asked Jesus this question to ·test [trap] him: 36 “Teacher, which command in the law is the ·most important [greatest]?”

37 Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind [Deut. 6:5].’ 38 This is the first and ·most important [greatest] command. 39 And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself [Lev. 19:18].’ 40 All the law and the ·writings of the prophets [L prophets] ·depend [are based; L hang] on these two commands.”

Jesus Questions the Pharisees(E)

41 While the Pharisees were together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the ·Christ [Messiah]? Whose ·son [descendant] is he?”

They answered, “The Son of David [see 2 Sam. 7:12].”

43 Then Jesus said to them, “Then why did David call him ‘Lord’? David, speaking ·by the power of the Holy Spirit [L in/by the Spirit], said,

44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit by me at my right ·side [L hand; C the place of greatest honor beside the king],
    until I put your enemies ·under your control [L beneath your feet; C meaning defeated or made subject to your authority; Ps. 110:1].”’

45 David calls ·the Christ [the Messiah; L him] ‘Lord,’ so how can ·the Christ [the Messiah; L he] be his son?”

46 ·None of the Pharisees [L No one] could answer ·Jesus’ question [a word], and after that day no one ·was brave enough [dared] to ask him any more questions.
