Deuteronomy 30

30 “And then when all of these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you[a] and you call them to mind[b] among the nations there where Yahweh your God has scattered you, and you return to Yahweh and you listen to his voice according to all that I am commanding you today,[c] both you and your children,[d] with all your heart and with all your inner self,[e] and Yahweh your God will restore your fortunes, and he will have compassion upon you, and he will again gather you together[f] from all the peoples where Yahweh your God scattered you there.

Even if you are outcasts[g] at the end of the heavens, even from there Yahweh your God shall gather you, and from there he shall bring you back.[h] And Yahweh your God will bring you to the land that your ancestors[i] had taken possession of,[j] and he will make you successful, and he will make you more numerous than your ancestors.[k]

“And Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring to love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your inner self[l] so that you may live.[m] And Yahweh your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you,[n] on those who harassed you.[o] And you will again listen[p] to the voice of Yahweh, and you will do all his commandments that I am commanding you today.[q] And Yahweh your God will make you prosperous in all your undertakings,[r] and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground abundantly,[s] for Yahweh will again rejoice[t] over you, just as he rejoiced over your ancestors.[u] 10 He will do this if you listen to[v] the voice of Yahweh your God by keeping his commandment and his statutes written in the scroll of this law and if you return to Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your inner self.[w]

11 “For this commandment that I am commanding you today[x] is not too wonderful for you,[y] and it is not too far from you. 12 It is not in the heavens so that you might say,[z] ‘Who will go up for us to the heavens and get it for us and cause us to hear it, so that we may do it?’ 13 And it is not beyond the sea,[aa] so that you might say,[ab] ‘Who will cross for us to the other side of the sea and take it for us and cause us to hear it, so that we may do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you, even in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may do it.[ac]

15 “See, I am setting before you[ad] today[ae] life and prosperity and death and disaster; 16 what I am commanding you today[af] is to love Yahweh your God by going[ag] in his ways and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his regulations, and then you will live, and you will become numerous, and Yahweh your God will bless you in the land where you are going.[ah] 17 However, if your heart turns aside and you do not listen and you are lured away and you bow down to other gods and you serve them, 18 I declare to you today[ai] that you will certainly perish; you will not extend your time[aj] on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to go there to take possession of it. 19 I invoke as a witness against you today[ak] the heaven and the earth: life and death I have set before you,[al] blessing and curse. So choose life, so that you may live, you and your offspring,[am] 20 by loving Yahweh your God by listening to his voice and by clinging to him, for he is your life and the length of your days in order for you to live on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,[an] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them.”

Psalm 119:73-96

Yod

73 Your hands have made me and established me;
give me understanding that I may learn your commands.
74 Those who fear you will see me and be glad,
because I hope in your word.
75 I know, O Yahweh, that your judgments are right,
and that in faithfulness you afflicted me.
76 Please let your loyal love comfort me,
according to your word[a] to your servant.
77 Let your mercies come to me, that I may live,
for your law is my delight.
78 Let the arrogant be put to shame,
because they have wronged me with lies.[b]
As for me, I will meditate on your precepts.
79 Let those who fear you turn to me,
even those who know[c] your testimonies.
80 May my heart be blameless in your statutes,
so that I may not be ashamed.

Kaph

81 My soul languishes for your salvation;
I hope in your word.
82 My eyes long for[d] your word,[e]
saying, “When will you comfort me?”
83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
84 How many are the days of your servant?
When will you execute justice against those who persecute me?
85 The arrogant have dug pits[f] for me,
which is not according to[g] your law.
86 All your commands are faithful.
They persecute me deceitfully; help me!
87 They have almost destroyed me on the earth,
but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 According to your loyal love preserve me alive,
so that I may heed the testimony from your mouth.

Lamed

89 Forever, O Yahweh,
your word is settled[h] in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness endures throughout all generations.[i]
You have established the earth and it stands.
91 By your ordinances they stand today,
for all are your servants.
92 Unless your law had been my delight,
then I would have perished in my misery.
93 I will not ever forget your precepts,
for by them you revive me.[j]
94 I am yours. Save me,
for I have sought your precepts.
95 For me the wicked lie in wait to destroy me.
I give attention to your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to every perfection;[k]
your command is very broad.

Isaiah 57

Idolatry is Adultery

57 The righteous one perishes, and there is no one who takes[a] it to heart.
    And men of faithfulness are gathered, while there is no one who understands,
for the righteous is gathered from the presence of wickedness.
    he enters into peace;
they will rest on their beds,
    walking straight ahead of him.
“But[b] you, come near here, you children of a soothsayer,
    offspring of an adulterer and she who commits fornication.
At whom do you make fun?
    At whom do you open[c] your mouth and stick out[d] your tongue?
Are you not children of transgression,
    offspring of deception,
who burn with lust among the oaks,
    under every leafy tree,
who slaughter children in the valleys,
    under the clefts of the rocks?
Your portion is among the smooth stones of the valley;
    they, they are your lot;
indeed, to them you have poured out a drink offering,
    you have brought a food offering.

Shall I relent concerning these things?

You have set your bed upon a high and lofty mountain;
    indeed, you went up there to slaughter sacrifice.
And you have set your symbol behind the door and the doorpost;
    for you depart[e] from me, and you go up;
you make your bed wide, and you make a deal with[f] them,
    you have loved their bed; you have seen their genitals.[g]
And you climbed down to the king with oil,
    and you made your perfumes numerous,
and you sent your envoys far away,[h]
    and you sent down deep[i] to Sheol.
10 You grow weary by the greatness of your way,
    but you did not say, ‘Despairing!’
You found the renewal[j] of your strength,[k]
    therefore you do not grow weak.
11 And of whom were you afraid and feared, that you deceived
    and did not remember me?
    Did you not place it on your heart?
Have I not been silent, even from long ago,
    and so you do not fear me?
12 I myself will declare your righteousness and your works,
    but[l] they will not benefit you.
13 When you cry,[m] let your collection deliver you,
    and the wind will carry all of them away;
    a breath will take them away.
But[n] he who takes refuge in me shall take possession of the land,
    and he shall inherit my holy mountain.”[o]

Peace for the Contrite

14 And one shall say, “Build up, build up! Clear the way!
    Remove the obstacles[p] from the way of my people!”

15 For thus says the high and lofty one who resides forever, and whose name is holy:

“I reside in a high and holy place,
    and with the contrite[q] and humble of spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble,
    and to revive the heart of the contrite.[r]
16 For I will not attack forever,
    and I will not be angry forever,
for the spirit will grow faint before me,
    and the breaths that I myself I have made.
17 I was angry because of his sin of gain, and I struck him;
    I hid and I was angry, but[s] he walked apostate, in the ways[t] of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, but[u] I will heal him;
    and I will lead him and give him and his mourners comfort as a recompense,
19     creating fruit of lips.
Peace, peace to the far and near,” says Yahweh, “and I will heal him.
20 But[v] the wicked are like the churning sea,
    that is not able to keep quiet,
    and its waters toss up mire and mud.
21 There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

Matthew 5

The Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes

Now when he[a] saw the crowds, he went up the mountain and after he[b] sat down, his disciples approached him. And opening his mouth he began to teach them, saying,

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the ones who mourn,
    because they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
    because they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are the ones who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    because they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
    because they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    because they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
    because they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
    because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you
    when they insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you, lying on account of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.

The Sermon on the Mount: Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, by what will it be made salty? It is good for nothing any longer except to be thrown outside and[c] trampled under foot by people. 14 You are the light of the world. A city located on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15 nor do they light a lamp and place it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines on all those in the house. 16 In the same way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

The Sermon on the Mount: The Law and the Prophets Fulfilled

17 “Do not think that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets. I have not come to destroy them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one tiny letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all takes place. 19 Therefore whoever abolishes one of the least of these commandments and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever keeps them and teaches them, this person will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter into the kingdom of heaven.

The Sermon on the Mount: Anger Toward Others

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people of old,[d] ‘Do not commit murder,’[e] and ‘whoever commits murder will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry at his brother will be subject to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Stupid fool!’[f] will be subject to the council, and whoever says, ‘Obstinate fool!’[g] will be subject to fiery hell. 23 Therefore if you present your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and first go be reconciled to your brother, and then come and[h] present your gift. 25 Settle the case quickly with your accuser[i] while you are with him on the way, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will never come out of there until you have paid back the last penny!

The Sermon on the Mount: Adultery and Lust

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[j] 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it from you! For it is better for you that one of your members be destroyed than your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it from you! For it is better for you that one of your limbs be destroyed than your whole body go into hell.

The Sermon on the Mount: Divorce

31 “And it was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[k] 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for a matter of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

The Sermon on the Mount: Taking Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the people of old,[l] ‘Do not swear falsely,[m] but fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’[n] 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, because it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet, or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. 36 And do not swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be ‘Yes, yes; no, no,’ and anything beyond these is from the evil one.[o]

The Sermon on the Mount: Retaliation

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’[p] 39 But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer, but whoever strikes you on the right cheek,[q] turn the other to him also. 40 And the one who wants to go to court with you and take your tunic, let him have[r] your outer garment also. 41 And whoever forces you to go one mile,[s] go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

The Sermon on the Mount: Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’[t] and ‘Hate your enemy.’[u] 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, because he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not the tax collectors also do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing that is remarkable? Do not the Gentiles also do the same? 48 Therefore you be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
