Genesis 48

48 Again, after this, one said to Joseph, “Lo, your father is sick.” Then, he took his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, with him.

Also, one told Jacob, and said, “Behold, your son, Joseph, has come to you.” And Israel gathered his strength and sat upon the bed.

Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz, in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

“and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful, and will multiply you, and will make a great number of people from you and will give this land to your seed after you, for an everlasting possession.’

“And now, your two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim (who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt) shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

“But your lineage which you have begotten after them shall be yours. They shall be called after the names of their brothers in their inheritance.

“Now, when I came from Padan, Rachel died beside me on the way (in the land of Canaan, when there was but a half day’s journey left to Ephrath). And I buried her there, on the way to Ephrath.” The same is Bethlehem.

Then Israel beheld Joseph’s sons and said, “Whose are these?”

And Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons whom God has given me here.” Then he said, “Please bring them to me, so that I may bless them.”

10 (For the eyes of Israel were dim from age, so that he could not see well.) Then he caused them to come to him. And he kissed them and embraced them.

11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I had not thought I would see your face. Yet, lo, God has also shown me your seed.”

12 And Joseph took them away from his knees and did reverence down to the ground.

13 Then Joseph took them both (Ephraim in his right hand, toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh in his left hand, toward Israel’s right hand). So, he brought them to him.

14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head (who was the younger) and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head (directing his hands intentionally, for Manasseh was the elder).

15 Also, he blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before Whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked—the God Who has fed me all my life long, until this day—bless you.

16 “The Angel, who has delivered me from all evil, bless the children; and let my name be named upon them, and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, so that they may grow as fish into a multitude in the midst of the Earth.”

17 But when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. And he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.

18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father. For this is the eldest. Put your right hand upon his head.”

19 But his father refused, and said, “I know well, my son. I know well. He shall also be a people; and he shall likewise be great. But his younger brother shall be greater than he; and his seed shall be full of nations.”

20 So, he blessed them that day, and said, “In you, Israel shall bless and say, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.” And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I die. And God shall be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.

22 “Moreover, I have given to you one portion more than your brothers, which I got out of the hand of the Amorite, by my sword and by my bow.”

Luke 1:39-80

39 And Mary arose in those days and quickly went into the hill country, to a city of Judah,

40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

41 And it happened that, as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby sprang in her belly. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.

42 And she cried with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, because the fruit of your womb is blessed!

43 “And how can it be that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 “For lo, as soon as I heard the voice of your greeting in my ears, the baby in my belly sprang for joy!

45 “And blessed is she who believed. For those things shall be completed, which were told her from the Lord.

46 Then Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.

47 “And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

48 “For He has looked on the poor degree of His servant. For behold, from now on all ages shall call me blessed.

49 “Because He Who is mighty has done great things for me, and Holy is His Name.

50 “And His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear Him.

51 “He Who showed strength with His arm, He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52 “He has put down the mighty from their seats and exalted those of low degree.

53 “He has filled the hungry with good things and sent away the rich empty.

54 “He has upheld Israel, His servant, to be mindful of His mercy,

55 “(as He has spoken to our fathers – that is, to Abraham and his seed) forever.”

56 And Mary stayed with her about three months. After which, she returned to her own house.

57 Now, Elizabeth’s time came for her to be delivered. And she brought forth a Son.

58 And her neighbors and cousins heard tell how the Lord had showed His great mercy upon her. And they rejoiced with her.

59 And it was so that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the baby. And they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60 But his mother answered, and said, “Not so. But he shall be called John.”

61 And they said to her, “There is no one in your family that is named with this name.”

62 Then they made signs to his father, asking how he would like him called.

63 So he asked for writing tablets, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” And they all marveled.

64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue. And he spoke and praised God.

65 Then fear came on all those who lived near them. And all these words were spread throughout all the hill country of Judea.

66 And all those who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child shall this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 Then his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people!

69 “And He has raised up the Horn of Salvation unto us, in the House of His servant David,

70 “as He spoke by the mouth of His Holy Prophets. Who were, since the world began, saying,

71 ‘deliverance from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us.’

72 “So that He might show mercy towards our fathers, and remember His Holy Covenant -

73 “the oath, which He swore to our father, Abraham -

74 “that he would grant to us. So that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, should serve him without fear

75 “all the days of our life, in holiness and righteousness before him.

76 “And you, child, shall be called the Prophet of the Most High. For you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

77 “to give knowledge of salvation to His people, by the remission of their sins

78 “through the tender mercy of our God (whereby the Dayspring from on high has visited us),

79 “to give light to those who sit in darkness (and in the shadow of death), and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit. And he was in the wilderness until the day came that he should show himself to Israel.

Job 14

14 “Man, who is born of woman, is of few days and full of trouble.

“He shoots forth as a flower and is cut down. He also vanishes as a shadow, and does not continue.

“Yet, You open Your Eyes upon such a one and cause me to enter into judgment with You.

“Who can bring a clean thing out of filthiness? There is not one.

“Are not his days determined, the number of his months with You? You have appointed his boundaries, which he cannot pass.

“Turn from him, so that he may rest, until his day is accepted as a hireling’s.

“For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will still sprout. And its branches will not cease.

“Though the root of it grows old in the earth, and its stump is dead in the ground,

“by the scent of water it will bud and bring forth branches like a plant.

10 “But man is sick and dies. And man perishes. And where is he?

11 “As the waters pass from the sea, and as the flood decays and dries up,

12 “so man sleeps and does not rise. He shall not wake again, or be raised from his sleep, until the heavens are no more.

13 “Oh that You would hide me in the grave and keep me secret until Your wrath were past, would set a time for me and remember me!

14 “If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, until my relief comes.

15 “You shall call me, and I will answer You. You love the work of Your own Hands.

16 “But now, You number my steps. Do You not watch over my sins?

17 “My iniquity is sealed up in a bag. And You add to my wickedness.

18 “And surely as the mountain falls and comes to nothing, and as the rock is removed from its place,

19 “as the water breaks the stones, You overflow the things which grow in the dust of the earth. So You destroy the hope of man.

20 “You always prevail against him, so that he passes away. He changes his face when You cast him away.

21 “And he does not know if his sons shall be honorable. Nor shall he understand concerning them, whether they shall be of low degree.

22 “But while his flesh is upon him, he shall be sorrowful. And while his soul is in him, it shall mourn.”

1 Corinthians 2

And I, brothers, when I came to you, came not with excellency of words, or of wisdom, showing to you the testimony of God.

For I determined not to know anything among you, except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

And I was among you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

Neither my word nor my preaching was in the enticing speech of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.

So that your faith would not be in the wisdom of man, but in the power of God.

Rather, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, which come to nothing,

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, having been hidden, which God predetermined to our glory before the world,

and which none of the princes of this world have known. For had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.

But as it is written, ‘The things which neither eye has seen, nor ear has heard, nor have come into man’s heart, are those which God has prepared for those who love Him.’

10 But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.

11 For what man knows the things of a man, except the spirit of a man, which is in him? So also, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit, Who is from God, that we might know the things that are given to us from God,

13 of which things we also speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but those which the Holy Ghost teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.

14 But the natural man does not perceive the things of the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he who is spiritual, discerns all things. Yet, he himself is judged by no one.

16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he might instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
