Genesis 47

47 Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their sheep and their cattle, and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.”

And Joseph took some of his brothers (five men) and presented them to Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your trade?” And they answered Pharaoh, “Your servants are sheepherders, both we and our fathers.”

Moreover, they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land. For your servants have no pasture for sheep, so sore is the famine in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”

Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.

“The land of Egypt is before you. Make your father and your brothers dwell in the best place of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know that there are men of activity among them, make them rulers over my cattle.”

Joseph also brought Jacob, his father, and set him before Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The whole time of my pilgrimage is a hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have the days of my life been; and I have not equaled the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimages.”

10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from the presence of Pharaoh.

11 And Joseph placed his father and his brothers and gave them possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land (in the land of Rameses), as Pharaoh had commanded.

12 And Joseph nourished his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with bread, even the young children.

13 Now, there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was exceedingly severe, causing the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan to be famished by reason of the famine.

14 And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought. And Joseph collected the money in Pharaoh’s house.

15 So, when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, then all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread! For, why should we die before you? For our money is spent.”

16 Then Joseph said, “Bring your cattle; and I will give you food for your cattle, if your money is spent.”

17 So, they brought their cattle to Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, and for the flocks of sheep, and for the herds of cattle, and for the donkeys. So, he fed them with bread for all their cattle that year.

18 But when the year had ended, they came to him the second year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that since our money is spent, and my lord has the herds of the cattle, there is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our ground.

19 “Why shall we perish in your sight, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be bound to Pharaoh. Therefore, give us seed, so that we may live and not die, and that the land does not go to waste.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. For every man sold his ground to the Egyptians because the famine was severe upon them. So, the land became Pharaoh’s.

21 And he moved the people into the cities, from one side of Egypt to the other.

22 Only the land of the Priests did he not buy. For the Priests had a daily ration from Pharaoh, and they ate their ration which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their ground.

23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Lo, here is seed for you. Therefore, sow the ground.

24 “And from the increase, you shall give one fifth to Pharaoh; and four parts shall be yours for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those of your households, and for your children to eat.”

25 Then they answered, “You have saved our lives. Let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”

26 Then Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt until this day that Pharaoh should have one fifth, excepting only the land of the Priests, which was not Pharaoh’s.

27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen. And they had their possessions therein and grew and multiplied exceedingly.

28 Moreover, Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So, the whole age of Jacob was a hundred forty-seven years.

29 Now, when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have now found grace in your sight, put your hand under my thigh now, and deal mercifully and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt.

30 “But when I shall sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he answered, “I will do as you have said.”

31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. And Israel worshipped towards the bed’s head.

Luke 1:1-38

Since many have attempted to set forth the story of those things of which we are fully persuaded

(exactly as they were delivered to us by those ministers of the Word who saw them themselves from the beginning),

it seemed good to me also - once I had carefully investigated all things from the beginning - to write to you of them from point to point, most noble Theophilus,

so that you might acknowledge the certainty of those things of which you have been instructed.

In the time of Herod, King of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the class of Abijah. And his wife was among the daughters of Aaron. And her name was Elizabeth.

Both were righteous before God and walked in all the Commandments and Ordinances of the Lord, without reproof.

And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren. And both were well-advanced in age.

And it so happened that as he executed the priest’s office before God (as per his class),

the lot fell to him to burn incense when he went into the Temple of the Lord, according to the custom of the priest’s office.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were outside in prayer while the incense was burning.

11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the Altar of Incense.

12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said to him, “Fear not, Zacharias. For your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son. And you shall call his name, John.

14 “And you shall have joy and gladness. And many shall rejoice at his birth.

15 “For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. And he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16 “And he shall turn many of the children of Israel to their Lord God.

17 “For he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Then Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is of a great age.”

19 And the angel answered, and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I am sent to speak to you, and to show you these good tidings.

20 “And behold, you shall be silent, and unable to speak, until the day that these things are done, because you did not believe my words which shall be fulfilled in their season.”

21 Now the people waited for Zacharias. And they marveled that he remained so long in the Temple.

22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them. Then, they perceived that he had seen a vision in the Temple. For he made signs to them and remained silent.

23 And it happened that when the days of his office were fulfilled, he departed to his own house.

24 And after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself for five months, saying,

25 “Thus has the Lord dealt with me, in the days on when he looked on me, to take from me my rebuke among man.”

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the House of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.

28 And the angel went in to her, and said, “Hail, you who are freely beloved. The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women.”

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and thought what kind of greeting that should be.

30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not fear, Mary. For you have found favor with God.

31 “For lo, you shall conceive in your womb, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name, Jesus.

32 “He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give to Him the throne of his father David.

33 “And He shall reign over the House of Jacob forever. And of His Kingdom shall be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, seeing I do not know man?”

35 And the angel answered, and said to her, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you. Therefore, also, that Holy Thing which shall be born by you, shall be called the Son of God.

36 “And behold, your cousin, Elizabeth. She has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is her sixth month, who was called barren.

37 “For with God shall nothing be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the servant of the Lord. May it be to me according to your word.” So, the angel departed from her.

Job 13

13 “Lo, my eye has seen all this. My ear has heard and understood it.

“I, also, know as much as you know. I am not inferior to you.

“But I will speak to the Almighty. And I desire to convince God.

“For indeed you forge lies. And all of you are physicians of no value.

“Oh, that you would hold your tongue, and it would become your wisdom.

“Now hear my correction and give ear to the arguments of my lips.

“Will you speak wickedly of God and talk deceitfully of His cause?

“Are you lifting up His Person if you strive with God?

“Is it well that He should seek you if you lie for Him, as one lies for a man?

10 “He will surely reprove you if you secretly lift up any person.

11 “Shall not His excellency make you afraid and His fear fall upon you?

12 “Your memories may be compared to ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

13 “Hold your tongues in my presence, so that I may speak and let come upon me what will.

14 “Why do I take my flesh in my teeth and put my soul in my hand?

15 “Lo, though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him. And I will prove my ways in His sight.

16 “He shall also be my salvation. For the hypocrite shall not come before Him.

17 “Hear diligently my words, and mark my talk.

18 “Behold now, I prepare myself for judgment. I know that I shall be justified.

19 “Who is he who will contend with me? For if I hold my tongue now, I die.

20 “Only, do not do these two things to me. Then will I not hide myself from You.

21 “Withdraw Your Hand from me and do not let Your fear make me afraid.

22 “Then call, and I will answer. Or let me speak, and answer me.

23 “How many are my iniquities and sins? Show me my rebellion and my sin.

24 “Why do You hide Your Face and take me for Your enemy?

25 “Will You break a leaf, driven to and fro? And will You pursue the dry stubble?

26 “For You write bitter things against me and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.

27 “You also put my feet in the stocks, look narrowly to all my paths, and imprint them with the heels of my feet.

28 “Such a one consumes like a rotten thing, as a garment that is moth-eaten.”

1 Corinthians 1

Paul, a called Apostle of Jesus Christ, through the will of God, and brother Sosthenes,

to the Church of God, which is at Corinth; to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus (Saints by calling) with all that call on the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, in every place, both theirs and ours:

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God always on your behalf for the grace of God which is given you in Jesus Christ.

That in all things you are made rich in Him in every expression and in all knowledge.

As the testimony of Jesus Christ has been confirmed in you.

So that you are not deficient in any gift, awaiting the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Who shall also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God is faithful; by Whom you are called to the fellowship of his son Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now I urge you, brothers, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak one thing, and that there be no dissensions among you. But be joined together in one mind, and in one judgment.

11 For it has been declared to me, my brothers, by those who are of the house of Chloe, that there is strife among you.

12 Now I say this: that each one of you says, “I am Paul’s”, and “I am Apollos’s”, and “I am Cephas’s” and “I am Christ’s”.

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but rather Crispus and Gaius,

15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized into my own name.

16 Now I also baptized the household of Stephanas. But I do not know whether I baptized any other besides that.

17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel (not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect).

18 For the preaching of the cross is to those who perish, foolishness. But to us who are saved, it is the power of God.

19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will cast away the understanding of the prudent.”

20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this world? Has not God made the wisdom of this world foolishness?

21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world in its own wisdom did not know God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of preaching, to save those who believe;

22 seeing also that the Jews require a sign, and the Grecians seek after wisdom.

23 But we preach Christ crucified, indeed a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Grecians.

24 But to those who are called, both of the Jews and Grecians, we preach Christ: the power of God and the wisdom of God.

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man, and the weakness of God is stronger than man.

26 For brothers, you see your calling: how that not many are wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble.

27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. And God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the mighty things.

28 And vile things of the world, and things which are despised, God has chosen, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are.

29 That no flesh should boast in His presence.

30 But you are of Him in Christ Jesus, Who, out of God, is made wisdom and righteousness to us, and sanctification, and redemption.

31 That it may be as it is written, ‘The one who boasts, let him boast in the Lord’.
