Genesis 29

29 Then Jacob lifted up his feet and came into the east country.

And as he looked around, behold, there was a well in the field; and lo, three flocks of sheep lay nearby (for the flocks were watered at that well). And there was a great stone upon the well’s mouth.

And all the flocks were gathered there. And they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth and watered the sheep and put the stone back in its place upon the well’s mouth.

And Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they answered, “We are from Haran.”

Then he said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” Who said, “We know him.”

Again, he said to them, “Is he in good health?” And they answered, “He is in good health. And behold, his daughter, Rachel, comes with the sheep.”

Then he said, “Lo, it is still midday; nor is it time that the cattle should be gathered together. Water the sheep and go feed them.

But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are brought together and the stone is rolled from the well’s mouth. Then we may water the sheep.”

While he talked with them, Rachel also came with her father’s sheep (for she kept them).

10 And as soon as Jacob saw Rachel (the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother) and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, then Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth and watered the flock of Laban, his mother’s brother.

11 And Jacob kissed Rachel and lifted up his voice and wept.

12 For Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son. Then she ran and told her father.

13 And when Laban heard tell of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

14 To whom Laban said, “Well, you are my bone and my flesh.” And he stayed with him for a month.

15 For Laban said to Jacob, “Though you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall be your wages?”

16 Now Laban had two daughters, the elder called Leah and the younger called Rachel.

17 And Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and fair.

18 And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”

19 Then Laban answered, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.”

20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel. And they seemed to him but a few days, because he loved her.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, so that I may go in to her. For my term is ended.”

22 Therefore, Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast.

23 And when the evening had come, he took Leah, his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.

24 And Laban gave his maid, Zilpah, to his daughter, Leah, to be her servant.

25 But when the morning had come, behold, it was Leah. Then he said to Laban, “Why have you done this to me? Did I not serve you for Rachel? Why then have you tricked me?”

26 And Laban answered, “It is not the custom of this place to give the younger before the elder.

27 “Fulfill seven years for her, and we will also give you this for the service which you shall serve me yet seven years more.”

28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her seven years. So, he gave him Rachel, his daughter, to be his wife.

29 Laban also gave to Rachel, his daughter, Bilhah, his maid, to be her servant.

30 So, he entered into Rachel also, and also loved Rachel more than Leah, and served yet seven years more.

31 When the LORD saw that Leah was despised, He made her fruitful. But Rachel was barren.

32 And Leah conceived and bore a son; and she called his name Reuben. For she said, “Because the LORD has looked upon my tribulation; now, therefore, my husband will love me.

33 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the LORD heard that I was hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.

34 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now, at this time my husband will keep me company, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore, his name was called Levi.

35 Moreover, she conceived again and bore a son, saying, “Now I will praise the LORD!” Therefore, she called his name Judah, and stopped bearing.

Matthew 28

28 Now at the end of the Sabbath, when the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulcher.

And behold, there was a great earthquake. For the Angel of the Lord descended from Heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it.

And his face was like lightning. And his clothing white as snow.

And for fear of him, the keepers were astonished, and became as dead men.

But the angel answered, and said to the women, “Do not fear. For I know that you seek Jesus, Who was crucified.

“He is not here. For He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord was laid.

“And go, quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead. And behold, He goes before you into Galilee. There you shall see Him. Lo, I have told you.”

So they quickly departed from the sepulcher, with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus also met them, saying, “Rejoice!” And they came, and took Him by the feet, and worshipped Him.

10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid! Go, and tell My brothers, so that they would go into Galilee. And there they shall see Me.”

11 Now when they had gone, behold, some of the guards came into the city, and reported to the chief priests all the things that had been done.

12 And they gathered together with the elders, and took counsel, and gave considerable money to the soldiers,

13 saying, “Say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we slept.’

14 “And if this matter comes before the governor to be heard, we will persuade him, so that you need not worry.”

15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story is told among the Jews to this day.

16 Then the eleven disciples went into Galilee, and to a mountain where Jesus had directed them.

17 And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him. But some doubted.

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All power is given to Me, in Heaven and on Earth.

19 “Go, therefore, and disciple all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost,

20 “teaching them to observe all things, whatever I have Commanded you. And lo, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Amen.”

Esther 5

And on the third day, Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the court of the king’s palace within, in front of the king’s rooms. And the king sat upon his royal throne, in the king’s palace, opposite the gate of the house.

And when the king saw Esther the Queen standing in the court, she found favor in his sight. And the king held out the golden scepter that was in his hand. So, Esther drew near and touched the top of the scepter.

Then the king said to her, “What’s wrong, Queen Esther? And what is your request? It shall be given to you, even up to half of the kingdom.”

Then Esther said, “If it please the king, let the king and Haman come this day to the banquet that I have prepared for him.”

And the king said, “Bring Haman quickly, so that he may do as Esther has said.” So, the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

And the king said to Esther at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition, so that it may be given to you? And what is your request? It shall be performed even up to half of the kingdom.”

Then Esther answered, “My petition, and my request is:

If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to give me my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them; and I will do as the king says tomorrow.”

Then, that same day, Haman went out joyful and with a glad heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, and that he did not stand or move for him, then Haman was full of indignation at Mordecai.

10 Nevertheless, Haman controlled himself. And when he came home, he sent for his friends and Zeresh, his wife.

11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the promotions the king had given him, and how that he had set him above the princes and servants of the king.

12 Haman also said, “Even Esther the Queen let no man except me come in with the king to the banquet that she had prepared. And tomorrow she has called us to her again.

13 But all this is unsatisfying as long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

14 Then Zeresh, his wife, and all his friends said to him, “Let them make a hanging tree 75 feet high, and tomorrow ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then you shall go joyfully with the king to the banquet.” And that pleased Haman. So, he had the hanging tree made.

Acts 28

28 And when they had escaped, they learned that the isle was called Malta.

And the people of the country showed us no little kindness. For they kindled a fire and welcomed all of us, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

And when Paul had gathered a number of sticks, and laid them on the fire, a viper came out of the heat and fastened on his hand.

Now when the locals saw the wild beast hanging on his hand, they said among themselves, “This man is surely a murderer. For though he has escaped the sea, vengeance has still not allowed to live.”

But he shook off the beast (into the fire) and felt no harm.

Even so, they waited for him to become swollen, or to suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long while and seen no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

In the same region, the chief man of the isle (whose name was Publius) had an estate. He kindly received and lodged us for three days.

And so it was that the father of Publius lay sick from a fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him. And when he prayed, he laid hands on him, and healed him.

Then, when this was done, others on the isle who had diseases also came to him and were healed.

10 They also honored us greatly. And when we departed, they gave us necessary supplies.

11 Now after three months, we departed in a ship of Alexandria, (which had wintered on the isle) whose figurehead was Castor and Pollux.

12 And when we arrived at Syracuse, we stayed three days.

13 And we cast off from there and came to Rhegium. And after one day, a south wind blew. And the next day we came to Puteoli,

14 where we found brothers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so, we went toward Rome.

15 And from there (when the brothers heard about us) they came to meet us at the Market of Appius and the three taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 So when we came to Rome, the Centurion delivered the prisoners to the general captain. But Paul was allowed to dwell by himself with a soldier who guarded him.

17 And three days later, Paul called the chief of the Jews together. And when they had come, he said to them, “Men! Brothers! Though I have committed nothing against the people or Laws of the Fathers, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

18 “After they examined me, they wanted to let me go because there was no reason to put me to death.

19 “But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar (not because I had anything of which to accuse my people).

20 “For this reason, therefore, I have called for you (to see you and to speak with you): for the hope of Israel’s sake, I am bound with this chain.”

21 Then they said to him, “We neither received letters out of Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers who came showed or spoken any evil of you.

22 “But we will hear what you think. For as concerning this sect, we know that it is contradicted everywhere.”

23 And when they had arranged a day, many came to him at his lodging. And he explained to them, testifying of the Kingdom of God and persuading them of those things that concern Jesus (both out of the Law of Moses and out of the Prophets) from morning to night.

24 And some were persuaded by the things which were spoken. And some did not believe.

25 Therefore, not being in agreement among themselves, they left after Paul had spoken one word: “The Holy Ghost spoke well to our Fathers by Isaiah the Prophet,

26 “saying, ‘Go to this people, and say, “By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand, and seeing you shall see, and not perceive.

27 “For the heart of this people has grown fat. And their ears are dull of hearing. And their eyes they have closed, or else they would see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and would return so that I might heal them.”’

28 “Therefore, be it known to you that this salvation by God is sent to the Gentiles. And they shall hear it.”

29 And when he had said these things, the Jews departed, and had great disputes among themselves.

30 And Paul remained a full two years in a house he rented for himself. And he welcomed all who came in to him,

31 boldly preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, without hindrance.
