Genesis 20

20 Afterward, Abraham departed from there toward the south country and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur and sojourned in Gerar.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” Then Abimelech, King of Gerar, sent for and took Sarah.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are indeed dead, because of the woman which you have taken; for she is a man’s wife.”

Notwithstanding, Abimelech had not yet come near her. And he said, “Lord, will you kill even the righteous nation?

“Did not he say to me, ‘She is my sister?’ Yes, and she herself said, ‘He is my brother’. With an upright mind, and innocent hands I have done this.”

And God said to him by a dream, “Indeed, I know that you did this with an upright mind. And I also restrained you, so that you should not sin against Me. Therefore, I did not allow you to touch her.

“Now then, restore the man’s wife to him. For he is a Prophet; and he shall pray for you, so that you may live. But if you do not restore her, be sure that you shall die the death, you and all that you have.”

Then Abimelech, rising up early in the morning, called all his servants and told all these things to them; and the men were very afraid.

Afterward, Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I offended you, that you have brought this great sin on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that ought not to be done.”

10 So Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you have done this thing?”

11 Then Abraham answered, “Because I thought, ‘Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will kill me for my wife’s sake.’

12 “Yet in truth she is my sister. For she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she is my wife.

13 “Now when God caused me to wander out of my father’s house, I said then to her, ‘This is your kindness that you shall show to me in all places where we come: Say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

14 Then Abimelech took sheep and cattle, and men servants, and women servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him.

15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you. Dwell where it pleases you.”

16 Likewise to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, he is the veil of your eyes to all that are with you, and to all others.” And she was thus rebuked.

17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his women servants. And they bore children.

18 For the LORD had shut up every womb of the House of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Matthew 19

19 And it happened that when Jesus had finished these sayings, He departed from Galilee, and came into the region of Judea beyond Jordan.

And great multitudes followed Him. And He healed them there.

Then the Pharisees came to Him, tempting Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife upon every occasion?”

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He Who made them at the beginning, made them male and female;

“and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave father and mother, and cling to his wife. And those who were two, shall be one flesh?’

“Therefore, they are no more two, but one flesh. Therefore, do not let man separate that which God has coupled together.”

They said to Him, “Why, then, did Moses command to give a Bill of Divorcement, and to send her away?”

He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart, Moses allowed you to divorce your wives. But from the beginning it was not so.

“Therefore, I say to you that whoever shall divorce his wife and marry another, unless it is for promiscuity, commits adultery. And whoever marries a divorcee ́, commits adultery.”

10 His disciples said to Him, “If it is so between man and wife, it is not good to marry.”

11 But He said to them, “All men cannot receive this thing. Only those to whom it is given.

12 “For there are some eunuchs who were so born from their mother’s belly. And there are some eunuchs who are gelded by men. And there be some eunuchs who have gelded themselves for the Kingdom of Heaven. The one who is able to receive this, let him receive it.”

13 Then little children were brought to Him, so that He could put hands on them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus said, “Allow the little children! And do not forbid them to come to Me! For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

15 And when He had put His hands on them, He departed from there.

16 And behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Master, what good thing shall I do, so that I may have eternal life?

17 And He said to him, “Why did you call me good? There is no one good, but One, even God. But if you wish to enter into Life, keep the Commandments.”

18 He said to Him, “Which?” And Jesus said, “These: ‘You shall not kill’. ‘You shall not commit adultery’. ‘You shall not steal’. ‘You shall not bear false witness’.

19 “‘Honor your father and mother’. And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’.”

20 The young man said to Him, “I have observed all these things from my youth. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go. Sell what you have and give it to the poor. And you shall have treasure in Heaven. And come and follow Me.”

22 And when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful. For he had great possessions.

23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you that a rich man shall not easily enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

24 “And again I say to you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.”

25 And when His disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

26 And Jesus looked at them, and said to them, “With man this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.”

27 Then Peter answered, and said to Him, “Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed You. What, therefore, shall we have?”

28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that when the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His Majesty, you who followed Me in the new birth shall also sit upon twelve thrones, and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 “And whoever shall forsake houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My Name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold more, and shall inherit everlasting life.

30 “But many that are first, shall be last. And the last shall be first.

Nehemiah 9

On the twenty-fourth day of this month, the children of Israel were assembled, with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them.

And those who were of the seed of Israel were separated from all the strangers. And they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.

And they stood up in their place and read in the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for one fourth of the day. And they confessed and worshipped the LORD their God four times.

Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Chenani stood up upon the stairs of the Levites and cried with a loud voice to the LORD their God.

And the Levites (Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah) said, “Stand up and praise the LORD your God forever and ever! And let them praise Your glorious Name, O God, which excels above all thanksgiving and praise!

“You are LORD alone! You have made heaven, and the Heaven of all heavens, with all their host, the Earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that are in them! And You preserve them all! And the host of Heaven worships You!

“You are, O LORD, the God Who has chosen Abram, and brought him out of Ur in Chaldeans, and made his name Abraham,

“and found his heart faithful before You, and made a Covenant with him, to give to his seed the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites, and have performed Your words because You are just!

“You have also considered the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry by the Red Sea,

10 “and showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land! For You knew that they dealt proudly against them! Therefore, You made Yourself a Name, as it is this day!

11 “For You broke up the Sea before them; and they went through the midst of the Sea on dry land! And You have cast those who pursued into the bottoms, as a stone in the mighty waters,

12 “and led them in the day with a pillar of a cloud, and in the night with a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way that they went!

13 “You also came down upon Mount Sinai and spoke to them from Heaven, and gave them right Judgments, and true Laws, Ordinances and good Commandments,

14 “and declared to them Your holy Sabbath, and commanded them Precepts and Ordinances and Laws, by the hand of Moses Your servant,

15 “and gave them bread from Heaven for their hunger and brought forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst and promised them that they would go in and take possession of the land which You had lifted up Your Hand to give them!

16 “But they and our fathers behaved proudly and hardened their neck, so that they did not listen to Your Commandments,

17 “but refused to obey and would not remember Your marvelous works that You had done for them, but hardened their necks and had in their heads to return to their bondage by their rebellion! But You, O God of Mercies, gracious and full of compassion, of long-suffering, and of great mercy, still did not forsake them!

18 “Moreover, when they made themselves a molten calf (and said, ‘This is your God Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt’) and committed great blasphemies—

19 “because of Your great mercies—You still did not forsake them in the wilderness! The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day to lead the way, nor did the pillar of fire by night to show them light and the way by which they should go!

20 “You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst!

21 “You also fed them for forty years in the wilderness! They lacked nothing! Their clothes did not grow old, and their feet did not swell!

22 “And You gave them kingdoms and people and scattered them into corners! So, they possessed the land of Sihon and the land of the king of Heshbon and the land of Og, king of Bashan!

23 “And You multiplied their children like the stars of the heaven and brought them into the land of which You had spoken to their fathers, so that they would go and possess it!

24 “So, the children went in and possessed the land! And You subdued the inhabitants of the land before them, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings and the people of the land, so that they might do with them what they would!

25 “And they took their strong cities and the fat land and possessed houses full of all goods, cisterns dug out, vineyards and olives and trees for food in abundance. And they ate and were filled and became fat and lived in pleasure through Your great goodness!

26 “Yet they were disobedient and rebelled against You and cast Your Law behind their backs and killed Your Prophets who protested among them to turn them to You! And they committed great blasphemies!

27 “Therefore, You delivered them into the hand of their enemies who troubled them! Still, in the time of their affliction, when they cried to You, You heard them from Heaven! And through Your great mercies, You gave them saviors, who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries!

28 “But when they had rest, they returned to do evil before You! Therefore, You left them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them! Yet, when they returned and cried to You, You heard them from Heaven and delivered them according to Your great mercies, many times,

29 “and testified among them, so that You might bring them back to Your Law! But they behaved proudly and did not listen to Your Commandments, but sinned against Your Judgments (which a man should do and live in them) and pulled away the shoulder and were stiff-necked and would not hear!

30 “Yet, You put up with them for many years, and testified among them by Your Spirit, by the hand of Your Prophets, but they would not hear! Therefore, You gave them into the hand of the people of the lands!

31 “Yet, because of Your great mercies, You have not consumed them or forsaken them! For You are a gracious and merciful God!

32 “Now therefore our God, You, great God, mighty and terrible, Who keeps covenant and mercy, do not let all the affliction that has come to us seem little before You, to our kings, to our princes, to our priests, to our Prophets, to our fathers and to all Your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day!

33 “Surely, You are just in all that has come upon us! For You have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly!

34 “And our kings and our princes, our priests and our fathers, have neither done Your Law nor regarded Your Commandments nor Your Testimonies with which You have testified among them!

35 “And they have not served You in their kingdom, and in Your great goodness that You showed to them, and in the large and fat land which You set before them and have not turned back from their evil works!

36 “Behold, we are servants this day! And the land that You gave to our fathers, to eat its fruit and its goodness, behold, we are servants in it!

37 “And it yields much fruit to the kings whom You have set over us, because of our sins! And they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure! And we are in great affliction!

38 “Now because of all this, we make a sure covenant and write it! And our princes, our Levites and our priests seal it!”

Acts 19

19 And it so happened (while Apollos was at Corinth) that Paul, when he passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found some disciples,

and said to them, “Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” And they said to him, “We have not even heard whether there is a Holy Ghost.”

And he said to them, “Into what were you baptized then?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

Then Paul said, “Truly, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in Him Who should come after him; that is, in Christ Jesus.”

And when they heard it, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus.

So Paul laid his hands upon them, and the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spoke the tongues, and prophesied.

And there were, in all, about twelve men.

Moreover, he went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for three months, disputing and persuading in things concerning the Kingdom of God.

But when some were hardened and disobeyed, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he left them; and separated the disciples, and disputed daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

10 And this was done for two years. So that all those who dwelt in Asia heard the Word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

11 And God wrought no small miracles by the hands of Paul,

12 So that kerchiefs (or handkerchiefs) were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them. And the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then exorcists took in hand some of the vagabond Jews to name the Name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We command you by Jesus, Whom Paul preaches!”

14 And there were about seven sons of Sceva (a Jewish chief priest) who did this.

15 And the evil spirit answered, and said, “Jesus I acknowledge! And Paul I know! But who are you?”

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was, ran at them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house, naked and wounded.

17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks who dwelt at Ephesus. And fear came upon them all. And the Name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 And many who believed came and confessed and declared their works.

19 Also, many of those who used curious arts brought their books and burned them before all. And they priced them at fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 So the Word of God grew mightily, and prevailed.

21 Now when these things were completed, Paul purposed by the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia, and to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”

22 So he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia. But he remained in Asia for a while.

23 And about that time there arose no small trouble about the Way.

24 For a certain man named Demetrius (a silversmith who made silver shrines of Diana) brought great gains to the craftsmen.

25 He called them together, along with workmen of similar things, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this trade we have wealth.

26 “Moreover, you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that things which are made with hands are not Gods.

27 “So that not only is our trade in danger of disrepute, but also the shrine of the great goddess Diana may be despised, causing her magnificence (which all Asia and the world worships) to be destroyed!”

28 Now when they heard it, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

29 And the whole city was full of confusion. And having caught Gaius and Aristarchus (men of Macedonia, and Paul’s companions on his journey), they rushed into the theatre with one mind.

30 And when Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples did not allow him.

31 Then, some of the rulers of Asia who were his friends sent word to him, begging him not to show himself in the theatre.

32 Therefore some cried one thing, and some another. For the assembly was out of order, and most of them did not know why they had come together.

33 And they brought Alexander out, the Jews thrusting him forward. Alexander then beckoned with his hand, wanting to make a defense to the people.

34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, they all began chanting for almost two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

35 Then the town clerk, after he had silenced the people, said, “Men of Ephesus, what man does not know that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which came down from heaven?

36 “Seeing, then, that these things are indisputable, you should calm down, and do nothing rashly.

37 “For you have brought these men here who have committed neither sacrilege nor blasphemy of your goddess.

38 “Therefore, if indeed Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the law is open. And there are proconsuls. Let them accuse one another.

39 “But, if you inquire about other matters, that shall be settled in a lawful assembly.

40 “For we are also in danger of being accused of sedition today, because there is no reason we may give for this riotous multitude.”

41 And after he had said this, he let the assembly depart.
