Genesis 18

18 Again the LORD appeared to him on the plain of Mamre, as he sat in his tent door in the heat of the day.

And he lifted up his eyes and looked. And lo, three men stood by him. And when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door and bowed himself to the ground.

And he said, “Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, please do not go from Your servant.

“Please let a little water be brought; and wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.

“And I will bring a morsel of bread, so that you may comfort your hearts. Afterward, you shall go your ways. For therefore have you come to your servant.” And they said, “Do even as you have said.”

Then Abraham went quickly into the tent, to Sarah, and said, “Make ready at once three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes upon the hearth.”

And Abraham ran to the beasts and took a tender and good calf and gave it to the servant, who hurried to make it ready.

And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set them before them, and stood by them under the tree. And they ate.

Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” And he answered, “Behold, in the tent.”

10 And he said, “I will certainly come again to you according to the time of life. And lo, Sarah, your wife, shall have a son.” And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and stricken in age. And Sarah was past child-bearing years.

12 Therefore, Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my lord also, shall I have pleasure?”

13 And the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I, who am old, surely bear a child?’

14 “Shall anything be hard to the LORD? At the time appointed I will return to you—according to the time of life—and Sarah shall have a son.”

15 But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh.” For she was afraid. And he said, “It is not so. For you did laugh.”

16 Afterward, the men rose up from there and looked toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to send them on their way.

17 And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do,

18 “seeing that Abraham shall indeed be a great and a mighty nation, and all the nations of the Earth shall be blessed in him?

19 “For I know him, that he will command his sons and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD: to do righteousness and judgment. So that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which He has spoken to him.”

20 Then the LORD said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is exceedingly grievous,

21 “I will go down now and see whether they have done entirely according to that cry which has come to Me. And if not, I will know.”

22 And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom. But Abraham still stood before the LORD.

23 Then Abraham drew near, and said, “Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

24 “If there are fifty righteous within the city, will you destroy (and not spare the place) because of the fifty righteous that are therein?

25 “Be it far from You from doing this thing—to slay the righteous with the wicked—and that the righteous should be even as the wicked. Be it far from You! Shall not the Judge of all the world do right?”

26 And the LORD answered, “If I shall find fifty righteous within the city of Sodom, then will I spare all the place for their sakes.”

27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Behold now, I have begun to speak to my Lord; and I am but dust and ashes.

28 “If there shall be five less than fifty righteous, will You destroy all the city for five?” And He said, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.”

29 And he spoke to Him yet again, and said, “What if there shall be found forty there?” Then He answered, “I will not do it for forty’s sake.”

30 Again he said, “Do not let my Lord now be angry at what I speak. What if thirty are found there?” Then He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 Moreover he said, “Behold now, I have begun to speak to my Lord. What if twenty are found there?” And He answered, “I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.”

32 Then he said, “Do not let my Lord now be angry, and I will speak but once more. What if ten are found there?” And He answered, “I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.”

33 And the LORD went His way when he had finished communing with Abraham. And Abraham returned to his place.

Matthew 17

17 And after six days, Jesus took Peter and James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain, alone.

And He was transfigured before them. And His face shined as the Sun. And His clothes were as white as the light.

And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him.

Then Peter answered, and said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You would, let us make three booths here; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

“While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.”

And when the disciples heard that, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.

Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, “Arise. And do not be afraid.”

And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, “Tell no one of this vision until the Son of Man has risen again from the dead.”

10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 And Jesus answered, and said to them, “Certainly Elijah must come first, and restore all things.

12 “But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him. But they have done to him whatever they would. Likewise, the Son of Man shall also suffer by them.”

13 Then the disciples perceived that He spoke to them of John Baptist.

14 And when they had come to the multitude, a certain man came to Him and fell down at His feet,

15 and said, “Master, have pity on my son. For he is lunatic and suffers greatly. For he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.

16 “And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him.”

17 Then Jesus answered, and said, “O faithless and crooked generation. How long now shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.”

18 And Jesus rebuked the demon. And he went out of him. And the child was healed at that hour.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, “Why could not we cast it out?”

20 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as much as is a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it shall move. And nothing shall be impossible to you.

21 “Nevertheless, this kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.”

22 And while they were in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

23 “And they shall kill Him. But the third day He shall rise again.” And they were very sorrowful.

24 And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter, and said, “Does not your Master pay temple taxes?

25 He said, “Yes.” And when he had come into the house, Jesus stopped him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the Earth take tribute (or temple taxes) - from their children, or from strangers?

26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Then Jesus said to him, “Then the children are free.”

27 Nevertheless, so that we should not offend them, go to the sea and cast in a hook. And take the first fish that comes up. And when you have opened its mouth, you shall find a coin. Take it, and give it to them for you and Me.

Nehemiah 7

Now after the wall had been built, and I had set up the doors and the gatekeepers and the singers, and the Levites had been appointed,

I commanded my brother, Hanani, and Hananiah, the prince of the palace in Jerusalem (for he was doubtless a faithful man and feared God above many).

And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the heat of the Sun. And while they stand guard, let them shut the doors and fasten them. And appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post and each in front of his house.”

Now, the city was large and great. But there were few people in it, and the houses were not built.

And my God put into my heart to gather the princes and the rulers and the people, to count their genealogies. And I found a book of the genealogy of those who had come up at the beginning. And in it I found:

“These are the sons of the province who came up from the captivity that was carried away (whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, had carried away). And they returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each one to his city,

62 The sons of Delaiah — the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda — were six hundred forty-two.

63 And of the priests were the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, and the sons of Barzillai, who took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite as a wife and was named after their name.

64 These sought their writing in the genealogies, but it was not found. Therefore they were cast out from the priesthood.

65 And the Tirshatha told them that they should not eat of the Most Holy until a Priest rose up with Urim and Thummim.

66 All the Congregation together was forty-two thousand, three hundred sixty,

67 besides their servants and their maids, who were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven. And they had two hundred forty-five singing men and singing women.

72 And the rest of the people gave twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand pieces of silver and sixty-seven priest’s garments.

73 And the priests and the Levites and the gatekeepers and the singers and the rest of the people and the Nethinim and all Israel dwelt in their cities. And when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

Acts 17

17 Now as they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

And Paul (as was his custom) went in and argued with them from the Scriptures for three Sabbaths,

Opening, and alleging, that Christ must have suffered and risen again from the dead; and saying, “This is Jesus Christ. Whom I preach to you.”

And some of them believed (also a great multitude of the Greeks who feared God, and not a few of the chief women) and joined with Paul and Silas.

But the Jews who did not believe - moved with envy – took some wicked fellows from the marketplace. And when they had assembled a multitude, they made a disturbance in the city. And they assaulted the house of Jason and sought to bring them out to the people.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers before the heads of the city, crying, “Those who have subverted the state of the world are here also!

“Jason has received them. And they all act against the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another King - Jesus!”

And they troubled the people and the heads of the city, when they heard these things.

Nevertheless, when they had received bail from Jason and the others, they let them go.

10 And the brothers immediately sent away Paul and Silas to Berea by night. And when they had gotten there, they entered into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 Also, these were more noble men than those at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed, and honorable Greek women, and not a few men.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica knew that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also, and moved the people.

14 And immediately the brothers sent Paul away, to go to the sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.

15 And those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens. And when they had received a commandment for Silas and Timothy to come to him at once, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, when he saw the idolatry in the city, his spirit was pricked within him.

17 Therefore he disputed daily - with the Jews in the synagogue, with the religious, and in the marketplace - with whomever he met.

18 Then some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers disputed with him. And some said, “What will this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of strange gods.” (because he preached Jesus to them, and the resurrection.)

19 And they took him, and brought him to Mars’ Hill, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

20 “For you bring some strange things to our ears. Therefore, we want to know what these things mean.”

21 For all the Athenians (and strangers who dwelt there) gave themselves to nothing else but either telling or hearing something new.

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ Hill, and said, “Men of Athens! I perceive that in all things you are very fearful of gods.

23 “For as I passed by and observed your objects of worship, I found an altar whereupon was written, ‘TO THE UNKNOWN GOD’. Him then, Whom you ignorantly worship, I proclaim to you.

24 “God - Who made the world and all things that therein are - seeing that He is Lord of Heaven and Earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

25 “Nor is He worshipped with man’s hands as though He needed anything (seeing He gives life to all, and breath, and all things).

26 “And He has made, from one blood, all nations of mankind to dwell on all the face of the Earth; and has assigned the seasons (which were pre-ordained) and the boundaries of their dwellings,

27 “so that they should seek the Lord; that perhaps they might have groped after Him and found Him. Though doubtless He is not far from each one of us.

28 “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being, as some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His family’.

29 “Therefore, since we are the family of God, we ought not to think that the Divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, sculpted by art and the invention of man.

30 “God, having overlooked these times of ignorance, now admonishes all mankind, everywhere, to repent.

31 “Because He has appointed a Day on the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man Whom He has appointed. He has given us all this assurance by raising Him from the dead.”

32 Now when they had heard of the resurrection from the dead, some mocked. And others said, “We will hear from you again about this.”

33 And so Paul departed from among them.

34 But some men joined Paul and believed. Among them were Dionysius Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
