Judges 17

Micah’s Idolatry

17 There was a man from the hill country of Ephraim; his name was Micah. And he said to his mother, “The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you, and about which you also pronounced a curse in my hearing,[a] are with me; I took it.” And his mother said, “Blessed be my son by Yahweh.” He returned the eleven hundred pieces[b] of silver to his mother, and his mother thought, “I will certainly consecrate to Yahweh the pieces[c] of silver from my hand for my son to make an idol of cast metal; now then, I will return them[d] to you.” When he returned the pieces[e] of silver to his mother, his mother took two hundred pieces[f] of silver, and she gave it to the smith, and he made it into an idol of cast metal; and it was in the house of Micah. The man Micah had for himself a shrine,[g] and he made an ephod and teraphim, and he appointed one of his sons[h] who became a priest for him. In those days there was no king in Israel, and each one did what was right in his own eyes.

There was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, from the clan of Judah; he was a Levite and was dwelling as a foreigner[i] there. And the man went from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to live as a foreigner[j] wherever he could find a place. And he came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, to continue his journey. And Micah said to him, “From where do you come?” And he said to him, “I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah; I am going to dwell as a foreigner[k] wherever I can find a place.” 10 And Micah said to him, “Stay with me and be to me a father and a priest, and I will give to you ten pieces[l] of silver a year, a set of clothes, and your food.” So the Levite went with him. 11 The Levite agreed to stay with the man; and the young man became as one of his sons. 12 So Micah appointed the Levite,[m] and the young man became a priest for him; and he was in the house of Micah. 13 And Micah said, “Now I know Yahweh will make me prosperous, because the Levite has become my priest.”

Acts 21

Paul Travels on to Jerusalem

21 And it happened that after we tore ourselves away[a] from them, we put out to sea, and[b] running a straight course we came to Cos and on the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. And finding a ship that was crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and[c] put out to sea. And after we[d] sighted Cyprus and left it behind on the port side,[e] we sailed to Syria and arrived at Tyre, because the ship was to unload its[f] cargo there. And we stayed there seven days after we[g] found the disciples, who kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem. And it happened that when our days were over, we departed and[h] went on our way, while[i] all of them accompanied us, together with their[j] wives and children, as far as outside the city. And after[k] falling to our knees on the beach and[l] praying, we said farewell to one another and embarked in the ship, and they returned to their own homes.

And when[m] we had completed the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais. And after we[n] greeted the brothers, we stayed one day with them. And on the next day we departed and[o] came to Caesarea, and entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and[p] stayed with him. (Now this man had[q] four virgin daughters who prophesied.)

10 And while we[r] were staying there[s] many days, a certain prophet named[t] Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And he came to us and took Paul’s belt. Tying up his own feet and hands, he said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will deliver him[u] into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12 And when we heard these things, both we and the local residents urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul replied, “What are you doing weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus!” 14 And because[v] he would not be persuaded, we remained silent, saying, “The will of the Lord be done.”

15 So after these days we got ready and[w] went up to Jerusalem. 16 And some of the disciples from Caesarea also traveled together with us, bringing us[x] to a certain Mnason of Cyprus, a disciple of long standing,[y] with whom we were to be entertained as guests.

Paul Visits the Leaders of the Jerusalem Church

17 And when[z] we came to Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us gladly. 18 And on the next day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present. 19 And after[aa] greeting them, he began to relate[ab] one after the other[ac] the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. 20 And when[ad] they heard this,[ae] they began to glorify[af] God. And they said to him, “You see, brother, how many ten thousands there are among the Jews who have believed, and they are all zealous adherents of the law. 21 And they have been informed about you that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles the abandonment of Moses, telling them not to circumcise their[ag] children or to live according to our[ah] customs. 22 What then is to be done?[ai] Doubtless they will all hear that you have come! 23 Therefore do this that we tell you: we have[aj] four men who have taken a vow upon themselves.[ak] 24 Take these men and[al] purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses[am] so that they can shave their[an] heads, and everyone will know that the things which they had been informed about you are nothing, but you yourself also agree with observing the law. 25 But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter after[ao] deciding they should avoid food sacrificed to idols and blood and what has been strangled and sexual immorality.” 26 Then Paul took along the men on the next day, and[ap] after he[aq] had purified himself together with them, he entered into the temple courts,[ar] announcing the completion of the days of purification until the time[as] the offering would be presented on behalf of each one of them.

Paul Arrested in the Temple Courts

27 But when the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews from Asia[at] who had seen him in the temple courts[au] stirred up the whole crowd and laid hands on him, 28 shouting, “Israelite men, help! This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place! And furthermore he also brought Greeks into the temple, and has defiled this holy place!” 29 (For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, whom they thought that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30 And the whole city was stirred up, and the people came running together, and they seized Paul and[av] dragged him outside of the temple courts,[aw] and immediately the doors were shut.

31 And as they[ax] were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the military tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 He[ay] immediately took along soldiers and centurions and[az] ran down to them. And when[ba] they saw the military tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the military tribune came up and[bb] arrested him and ordered him[bc] to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what it was that he had done. 34 But some in the crowd were shouting one thing and others another, and because[bd] he was not able to find out the truth on account of the commotion, he gave orders to bring him into the barracks.[be] 35 And when he came to the steps, it happened that he had to be carried by the soldiers on account of the violence of the crowd, 36 for the crowd of people was following them,[bf] shouting, “Away with him!”

Paul Permitted to Address the Crowd

37 And as he[bg] was about to be brought into the barracks,[bh] Paul said to the military tribune, “Is it permitted for me to say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek? 38 Then you are not the Egyptian who before these days raised a revolt and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”[bi] 39 But Paul said, “I am a Jewish man from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no unimportant city. Now I ask you, allow me to speak to the people.” 40 So when[bj] he permitted him,[bk] Paul, standing there on the steps, motioned with his[bl] hand to the people. And when there[bm] was a great silence, he addressed them[bn] in the Aramaic language, saying,

Jeremiah 30-31

Israel and Judah Will Be Delivered from Their Distress

30 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,[a] “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying,[b] ‘Write for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you in a scroll. For look, days are coming,’ declares[c] Yahweh, ‘when I will restore the fortunes[d] of my people Israel and Judah,’ says Yahweh, ‘and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their ancestors[e] and they will take possession of it.’”

Now these are the words that Yahweh spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah. “For thus says Yahweh:

‘We have heard a sound of trembling,
terror, and there is no peace.
Ask please and see whether a male can bear a child.
Why do I see every strong man
with his hands on his loins like a woman giving birth?
And why are all their faces changed to paleness?
Alas! For that day is great,
    there is none like it.[f]
And it is a time of distress for Jacob,
yet from it he will be delivered.
And it will happen on that day,’ declares[g] Yahweh of hosts,
‘I will break his yoke from your neck
and your bonds I will tear to pieces.
And strangers will no longer let him work as a slave.
But they will serve Yahweh their God,
and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
10 But you must not fear, my servant Jacob,’ declares[h] Yahweh,
‘and you must not be dismayed, Israel,
for look, I am going to save you from far,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return,
and he will be at rest,
and he will be at ease,
and there will be no one who makes him[i] afraid.
11 For I am with you,’ declares[j] Yahweh, ‘to save you.
For I will make a complete destruction
of all the nations to which I scattered you,
but you I will not make a complete destruction.
And I will chastise you to the measure,
and I will not leave you entirely unpunished.’

12 For thus says Yahweh,

‘Your injury is incurable,
your wound is overcome by sickness.
13 There is no one who pleads your cause,
for your boil there is no healing for you.
14 All your lovers have forgotten you,
they do not care for you.
I have struck you with the blow of an enemy,
    the punishment of the cruel,
because of the greatness of your guilt,
    your sins are numerous.
15 Why do you cry because of your wound?
    Your pain is incurable.
Because of the greatness of your guilt—your sins are vast—
I have done these things to you.
16 Therefore[k] all those who devour you will be devoured,
and all your foes, all of them will go into captivity,
and those who plunder you will be as plunder,
and all those who plunder you I will make as plunder.
17 For I will present healing to you,
and I will heal you of your wounds,’ declares[l] Yahweh.
‘Because they have called you an outcast, saying,
“It is Zion, there is no one who cares for her.”’

18 Thus says Yahweh:

‘Look, I will restore the fortunes[m] of the tents of Jacob,
and I will have compassion on his dwellings,
and the city will be rebuilt upon its mound,
and the citadel fortress will stand on its rightful site.
19 And thanksgiving and the sound of merrymakers
    will come out from them,
and I will make them numerous,
and they will not be few.
And I will make them honored,
and they will not be lowly.
20 And their children will be as of old,
and their community will be established before me.[n]
And I will punish all their oppressors.
21     And their noble will be from them,
and their ruler will come out from their midst.
And I will bring him near and he will approach me.
For who is he that would pledge his heart to approach me?’ declares[o] Yahweh.
22 ‘And you will be to me a people,
and I will be to you God.’”
23 Look, the storm of Yahweh!
    Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest.
It will whirl upon the head of the wicked.
24 The burning anger of Yahweh[p] will not turn back until his doing,
and until his accomplishing the plans of his mind.[q]
In the last of the days you will understand it.

31 “At that time,” declares[r] Yahweh,

“I will be the God of all the clans[s] of Israel,
and they will be to me a people.”

Thus says Yahweh:

The people of the survivors of the sword found grace in the desert;[t]
Israel going to find their rest.”
From afar Yahweh appeared to me, saying,
“I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Therefore[u] I have drawn you with loyal love.
I will again build you,
and you will be built, O virgin Israel.
You will again adorn yourself with your tambourines,
and you will go forth in the dancing in a ring of the merrymakers.
You will again plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria.
The planters will plant, and they will enjoy it.[v]
For there will be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim,
‘Stand up, and let us go up to Zion, to Yahweh our God.’”

For thus says Yahweh,

“Sing for joy for Jacob with gladness,
and shout out for the head of the nations.
Proclaim, praise, and say,
‘Save, O Yahweh, your people, the remnant of Israel.’
Look, I am going to bring them from the land of the north,
and I will gather them from the remotest part of the earth.
Among them the blind, and the lame,
those who are pregnant, and those who give birth,
together, a great assembly,
    they will return here.
With weeping they will come,
    and with pleas for mercy I will bring them;
I will let them walk by streams of water in a straight path.
They will not stumble in it,
for I have become to Israel a father,
and Ephraim, he is my firstborn.”
10 Hear the word of Yahweh, O nations,
and declare in the coastlands from afar, and say,
“The scatterer of Israel will gather him,
and he will keep him as a shepherd his flock.
11 For Yahweh has ransomed Jacob,
and he has redeemed him from the hand of the person stronger[w] than he.
12 And they will come,
and they will sing for joy on the height of Zion,
and they will be radiant over the goodness of Yahweh,
over the grain, and over the wine, and over the olive oil,
and over the young ones of the flock, and over the cattle.
And their life will become like a well-watered garden,
and they will never languish again.”
13 “Then the young woman will rejoice in the dancing in a ring,
and the young men and the old men together.
And I will turn their mourning to jubilation,
    and I will comfort them,
and I will gladden them from their sorrow.
14 And I will saturate the appetite of the priests with fatness,
and my people will be satisfied with my goodness,” declares[x] Yahweh.
15 Thus says Yahweh,
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
    lamentation, the weeping of bitterness.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
she refuses to be comforted because of her children,
    for they are no more.”

16 Thus says Yahweh:

“Restrain your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,” declares[y] Yahweh,
“and they will return from the land of the enemy.
17 And there is hope for your future,” declares[z] Yahweh,
“and your children will return to their territory.
18 Indeed I heard Ephraim pitying themselves,
‘You disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
like a calf that is not trained.
Bring me back and let me return,
for you are Yahweh my God.
19 For after my turning back I repented,
and after coming to understand I struck my thigh.
I was ashamed and also humiliated,
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 Is Ephraim my dear son,
or the child of my delight?
For as often as[aa] I have earnestly spoken against him,
    I still remember him.
Therefore[ab] my bowels are turbulent for him,
surely I will have compassion on him,” declares[ac] Yahweh.
21 “Set up for yourself road markers,
    make for yourself signposts,
set your mind[ad] to the main road,
the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin of Israel,
    return to these your cities.
22 How long[ae] will you waver, O unfaithful daughter?
For Yahweh has created a new thing on the earth,
a woman, she shelters a man.”

23 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “They will again say these words[af] in the land of Judah and in its towns at my restoring their fortunes,[ag]

‘Yahweh bless you, O settlement of righteousness,
    O hill of holiness.’
24 And Judah and all of its towns together will live in it,
farmers and those who travel with the flocks.[ah]
25 For I will saturate the thirst of the weary,
and every person who languishes I will replenish.”
26 At this I awoke and looked,
and my sleep was pleasant to me.

The New Covenant

27 “Look, the days are coming,” declares[ai] Yahweh, “and I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humankind, and with the seed of animals.[aj] 28 And then[ak] as I have watched over them to pull up, and to tear down, and to annihilate, and to destroy, and to do evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares[al] Yahweh. 29 “In those days they will say no longer, ‘Parents[am] have eaten unripe fruit, and the teeth of the children are set on edge[an].’ 30 But[ao] each will die because of his iniquity, everyone[ap] who eats the unripe fruit, their teeth will be set on edge.[aq]

31 Look, the days are coming,” declares[ar] Yahweh, “and I will make[as] a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made[at] with their ancestors[au] on the day of my grasping them[av] by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them,” declares[aw] Yahweh. 33 “But this is the covenant that I will make[ax] with the house of Israel after those days,” declares[ay] Yahweh: “I will put my law in their inward parts and on their hearts[az] I will write it, and I will be to them God, and they themselves will be to me people. 34 And they will no longer teach each one his neighbor, or each one his brother, saying,[ba] ‘Know Yahweh,’ for all of them will know me, from their smallest[bb] and up to their greatest,”[bc] declares[bd] Yahweh, “for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will no longer remember.”

35 Thus says Yahweh, who gives the sun for light by day, the regulations of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea and its waves roar—Yahweh of hosts is his name. 36 “If these rules would cease from before me,”[be] declares[bf] Yahweh, “also the offspring of Israel would cease from being a nation before me[bg] forever.”[bh] 37 Thus says Yahweh, “If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, also I will reject all the offspring of Israel because of all that they have done,” declares[bi] Yahweh. 38 “Look, days are coming,” declares[bj] Yahweh, “and the city will be rebuilt for Yahweh, from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 And the measuring line[bk] will still go out immediately in front of it to the hill of Gareb, and it will turn to Goah. 40 And the whole of the valley of the corpses, and the ashes, and all the cultivated fields up to the wadi of Kidron, up to the corner of the Gate of the Horses toward the east will be holy to Yahweh. It will not be uprooted, and it will not be overthrown again forever.”[bl]

Mark 16

Jesus Is Raised

16 And when[a] the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome purchased fragrant spices so that they could go and[b] anoint him. And very early in the morning on the first day of the week they came to the tomb after[c] the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And when they[d] looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away (for it was very large). And as they[e] were going into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He has been raised, he is not here! See the place where they laid him! But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.” And they went out and[f] fled from the tomb, because trembling and amazement had seized them. And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[g]

The Shorter Ending of Mark

[[So they promptly reported all the things they had been commanded to those around Peter. And after these things, Jesus himself also sent out through them from the east even as far as the west the holy and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.]]

The Longer Ending of Mark

[[Now early on the first day of the week, after he[h] rose, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had expelled seven demons. 10 She went out and[i] announced it[j] to those who were with him while they[k] were mourning and weeping. 11 And those, when they[l] heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, refused to believe it.[m] 12 And after these things, he appeared in a different form to two of them as they[n] were walking, while they[o] were going out into the countryside. 13 And these went and[p] reported it[q] to the others, and they did not believe them. 14 And later, while[r] they were reclining at table, he appeared to the eleven. And he reprimanded their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he[s] had been raised. 15 And he said to them, “Go[t] into all the world and[u] preach the gospel to all creation. 16 The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who refuses to believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will expel demons, they will speak in new tongues, 18 they will pick up[v] snakes.[w] And if they drink any deadly poison it will never hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will get[x] well.”

19 Then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and[y] proclaimed everywhere, while[z] the Lord was working together with them[aa] and confirming the message through the accompanying signs.]]
