Deuteronomy 30

The Promise of Restoration

30 When all these things happen to you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you remember them among all the nations, where the Lord your God has driven you, then you must return to the Lord your God and obey His voice according to all that I am commanding you today, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul. Then the Lord your God will overturn your captivity and have compassion on you and will return and gather you from all the nations, where the Lord your God has scattered you. If any of you are driven out to the outmost parts of heaven, from there will the Lord your God gather you, and from there He will get you. The Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies, on them who hate you, who persecuted you. You will return and obey the voice of the Lord, and obey all His commandments which I am commanding you today. The Lord your God will make you prosper in every work of your hand, in the offspring of your body, and in the offspring of your livestock, and in the produce of your land, for good. For the Lord will once again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, by keeping His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you return to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

The Choice of Life or Death

11 This commandment which I am commanding you today is not hidden from you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up for us to heaven and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and do it?” 13 It is not beyond the sea, so that you should say, “Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and do it?” 14 But the word is very near to you, in your mouth, and in your heart, so that you may do it.

15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, and death and disaster. 16 What I am commanding you today is to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, so that you may live and multiply. Then the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away, so that you do not obey, but are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, 18 then I declare to you today that you will surely perish and that you will not prolong your days in the land which you are crossing the Jordan to go in and possess.

19 I call heaven and earth to witnesses against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.

Psalm 119:73-96

י Yodh

73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me;
    give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
74 Those who fear You will be glad when they see me,
    because I have hoped in Your word.
75 I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right,
    and that You in faithfulness have afflicted me.
76 Let Your merciful kindness comfort me,
    according to Your word to Your servant.
77 Let Your compassion come to me, that I may live,
    for Your law is my delight.
78 Let the proud be ashamed, for they have been wicked to me in falsehood,
    but I will meditate on Your precepts.
79 Let those who fear You turn to me,
    that they might know Your testimonies.
80 Let my heart be blameless in Your statutes,
    that I may not be ashamed.

כ Kaph

81 My soul longs for Your deliverance,
    but I hope in Your word.
82 My eyes are weary for Your word,
    saying, “When will You comfort me?”
83 For I have become like a wineskin dried in the smoke,
    yet I have not forgotten Your statutes.
84 How many days are given to Your servant?
    When will You provide judgment on those who persecute me?
85 The proud have dug pits for me,
    and they do not live in accordance to Your law.
86 All Your commandments are faithful;
    I am persecuted without cause; help me!
87 They have almost consumed me on the earth,
    but I have not abandoned Your precepts.
88 Revive me according to Your lovingkindness,
    that I may keep the testimony from Your mouth.

ל Lamedh

89 Forever, O Lord, Your word
    is established in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness is for all generations;
    You have established the earth, and it is firm.
91 They continue this day according to Your ordinance,
    for all are Your servants.
92 Unless Your law had been my delight,
    I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget Your precepts,
    for with them You have revived me.
94 I am Yours; deliver me,
    for I have sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked have waited to destroy me,
    but I will consider Your testimonies.
96 I have seen that all perfection has an end,
    but Your commandment is quite broad.

Isaiah 57

Israel’s Futile Idolatry

57 The righteous man perishes,
    and no man lays it to heart;
and merciful men are taken away
    while no one understands,
for the righteous man is taken away
    from the evil to come.
He shall enter into peace;
    they shall rest in their beds,
    each one walking in his uprightness.

But draw near to here, you sons of a sorceress,
    offspring of an adulterer and prostitute.
Whom do you mock?
    Against whom do you open wide your mouth
    and stick out your tongue?
Are you not children of transgression,
    offspring of falsehood,
inflaming yourselves with idols
    under every green tree,
slaying the children in the valleys
    under the clefts of the rocks?
Among the smooth stones of the stream is your portion;
    they are your lot.
Even to them you have poured out a drink offering;
    you have offered a grain offering.
    Should I relent concerning these things?
On a lofty and high mountain you have set your bed;
    even there you went up to offer sacrifice.
Behind the doors and the doorposts
    you have set up your memorial;
far removed from Me, you have uncovered yourself;
    you have enlarged your bed and made a covenant with them;
you have loved their bed,
    you have looked on their nakedness.
You went to the king with ointment,
    and increased your perfumes,
and sent your messengers far off,
    and made them go down to Sheol.
10 You were wearied by the length of your road;
    yet you did not say, “There is no hope.”
You have found renewed strength;
    therefore, you did not faint.

11 Of whom were you afraid or fearful
    when you lied
and you did not remember Me,
    nor give Me a thought?
Have I not held My peace for a long time
    so that you do not fear Me?
12 I will declare your righteousness, and your works,
    yet they shall not profit you.
13 When you cry out,
    let your collection of idols deliver you.
But the wind shall carry them all away,
    a breath shall take them away.
But he who puts his trust in Me
    shall possess the land
    and shall inherit My holy mountain.

Healing for the Contrite

14 And it shall be said,

“Build up, build up, prepare the way,
    take up every stumbling block out of the way of My people.”
15 For thus says the High and Lofty One
    who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
I dwell in the high and holy place
    and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble,
    and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
16 For I will not contend forever,
    nor will I always be angry;
for the spirit would grow faint before Me,
    and the souls whom I have made.
17 For the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry and struck him;
    I hid My face and was wrathful,
    and he went on turning away in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways but will heal him;
    I will lead him and restore comfort to him and to his mourners,
19     by creating the fruit of the lips.
Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,
    says the Lord, and I will heal him.
20 But the wicked are like the troubled
    sea when it cannot rest,
    whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
21 There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked.

Matthew 5

The Sermon on the Mount(A)

Now seeing the crowds, He went up on a mountain. And when He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

The Beatitudes(B)

And He began speaking and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
    for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
    for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
    for they shall be called the sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when men revile you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be very glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in this manner they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light(C)

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how shall it be made salty? It is from then on good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Teaching About the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one dot or one mark will pass from the law until all be fulfilled. 19 Whoever, therefore, breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will in no way enter the kingdom of heaven.

Teaching About Anger

21 “You have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not murder,’[a] and ‘Whoever murders shall be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be in danger of the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

23 “Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go on your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25 “Reconcile with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will by no means come out of there until you have paid the last penny.[b]

Teaching About Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[c] 28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. For it is profitable that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell.

Teaching About Divorce(D)

31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’[d] 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.

Teaching About Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’[e] 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these comes from the evil one.

Teaching About Revenge(E)

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’[f] 39 But I say to you, do not resist an evil person. But whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other as well. 40 And if anyone sues you in a court of law and takes away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go a mile,[g] go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who would borrow from you do not turn away.

Love for Enemies(F)

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor[h] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brothers only, what are you doing more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore be perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
