Deuteronomy 29

Renewal of the Covenant

29 These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.

Moses proclaimed to all Israel, and said to them:

You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and all his servants and to all his land— the great temptations which your eyes have seen, those signs and great wonders. Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear. I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot. You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.

When you came to this place, Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we defeated them. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and to half of the tribe of Manasseh.

Therefore, keep the words of this covenant and do them, so that you may prosper in all you do. 10 Today all of you stand before the Lord your God, the heads of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and your foreigners who are in your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water— 12 so that you should enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God is making with you today. 13 Today He will establish that you are His people and that He is your God, just as He has said to you and He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 14 It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant and this oath, 15 but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, and with him who is not here with us today 16 (for you know that we lived in the land of Egypt and how we came through the nations which you passed by, 17 and you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them); 18 lest there be among you a man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of these nations, and lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit; 19 and it happens that, when he hears the words of this covenant, he blesses himself in his heart, saying, “I shall have peace, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,” thus destroying the watered ground with the dry. 20 The Lord will not spare him; rather the anger of the Lord and His jealousy will smolder against that man. All the curses that are written in this book will rest on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. 21 The Lord will single him out for disaster out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law.

22 The generation to come, your children who will rise up after you and the foreigner who will come from a far land, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it, will say, 23 “The whole land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and wrath.” 24 All nations will say, “Why has the Lord done such to this land? What does the heatedness of this great anger mean?”

25 Then men will say, “Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods which they did not know and which He had not given to them. 27 The anger of the Lord burned against this land, bringing on it all the curses that are written in this book. 28 The Lord rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation, and threw them into another land, as it is today.”

29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may keep all the words of this law.

Psalm 119:49-72

ז Zayin

49 Remember Your word to Your servant,
    on which You have caused me to hope.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction,
    for Your word revives me.
51 The proud ones have derided me,
    yet I have not forsaken Your law.
52 I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord,
    and I have comforted myself.
53 Fury has taken hold of me because of the wicked
    who forsake Your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs
    in the house of my temporary dwelling.
55 I have remembered Your name, O Lord, in the night,
    and have kept Your law.
56 This is my blessing,
    because I have kept Your precepts.

ח Heth

57 You are my portion, O Lord;
    I have said that I would keep Your words.
58 I seek Your favor with my whole heart;
    be merciful to me according to Your word.
59 I consider my ways,
    and I turn my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I made haste, and I did not delay
    to keep Your commandments.
61 The bands of the wicked have trapped me,
    but I have not forgotten Your law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You,
    because of Your righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all who fear You,
    and of those who keep Your precepts.
64 The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy;
    teach me Your statutes.

ט Teth

65 You have been good to Your servant,
    O Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good discernment and knowledge,
    for I have believed Your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I wandered,
    but now I keep Your word.
68 You are good and do good;
    teach me Your statutes.
69 The proud have spoken lies against me,
    but I keep Your precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as thick as fat,
    but I delight in Your law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
    that I might learn Your statutes.
72 The law from Your mouth is better to me
    than thousands of gold and silver coins.

Isaiah 56

Salvation for the Nations

56 Thus says the Lord:

Preserve justice
    and do righteousness,
for My salvation is about to come
    and My righteousness to be revealed.
Blessed is the man who does this,
    and the son of man who takes hold of it,
who keeps from polluting the Sabbath
    and keeps his hand from doing any evil.

Do not let the son of the foreigner
    who has joined himself to the Lord
speak, saying,
    “The Lord has utterly separated me from His people”;
do not let the eunuch say,
    “I am only a dry tree.”

For thus says the Lord:

To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths,
    and choose the things that please Me,
    and take hold of My covenant,
to them I will give in My house and within My walls
    a memorial, and a name
    better than that of sons and of daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
    that shall not be cut off.
Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the Lord
    to serve Him,
and to love the name of the Lord,
    and to be His servants,
to everyone who keeps from polluting the Sabbath
    and takes hold of My covenant,
even them I will bring to My holy mountain
    and make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
    shall be accepted on My altar;
for My house shall be called
    a house of prayer for all people.
The Lord God
    who gathers the outcasts of Israel says,
Yet I will gather others to them
    besides those who already are gathered to him.

God Accuses the Wicked

All you beasts of the field,
    all you beasts in the forest, come to devour.
10 His watchmen are blind;
    they all are ignorant;
they all are dumb dogs,
    unable to bark;
sleepers lying down,
    who love to slumber.
11 They are greedy dogs
    which can never have enough,
and they are shepherds who cannot understand;
    they all turn to their own way,
    every one for his gain, from his territory.
12 “Come,” they say, “let us get wine,
    and let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow shall be as today,
    only more so.”

Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus(A)

Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. And He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, and then He was hungry. And the tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be turned into bread.”

But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’[a]

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, and set Him on the highest point of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written,

    ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning you,’[b]

and

    ‘In their hands they shall lift you up,
    lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.’[c]

Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’[d]

Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur, and said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me. ”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Get away from here, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’[e]

11 Then the devil left Him, and immediately angels came and ministered to Him.

The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry(B)

12 Now when Jesus heard that John was put in prison, He left for Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying:

15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
    the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles:
16 The people who sat in darkness
    saw great light.
And on those who sat in the land of the shadow of death,
    light has dawned.”[f]

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

The Calling of the First Disciples(C)

18 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, throwing a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

21 And going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. 22 They immediately left the boat and their father and followed Him.

Ministering to Great Crowds(D)

23 Jesus went throughout all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all sorts of diseases among the people. 24 His fame went throughout all Syria. And they brought to Him all sick people who were taken with various diseases and tormented with pain, those who were possessed with demons, those who had seizures, and those who had paralysis, and He healed them. 25 Great crowds followed Him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
