Gifts Given on the Altar by the Leaders
7 Moses finished putting up the meeting tent. On that day he put oil on it and made it holy, with the things inside, the altar and all its objects. He put oil on them and made them holy. 2 Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses, brought their gifts. They were the leaders of the families, the heads of those who were numbered. 3 As gifts to the Lord they brought six covered wagons and twelve bulls, a wagon for every two of the leaders and a bull for each one. Then they gave them in front of the meeting tent. 4 The Lord said to Moses, 5 “Receive these things from them, that they may be used in the work of the meeting tent. Give them to the Levites, to each man for the work he does.” 6 So Moses took the wagons and the bulls, and gave them to the Levites. 7 He gave two wagons and four bulls to the sons of Gershon, for the work they were doing. 8 He gave four wagons and eight bulls to the sons of Merari, for the work they were doing under the leading of Ithamar the son of Aaron the religious leader. 9 But Moses did not give any to the sons of Kohath. 42 As the deer desires rivers of water, so my soul desires You, O God. 2 My soul is thirsty for God, for the living God. When will I come and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember, and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with many people and lead them to the house of God, with the voice of thankful joy, among the many happy people.
5 Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him again for His help of being near me. 6 O my God, my soul is troubled within me. So I remember You from the land of the Jordan and the tops of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. 7 Sea calls to sea at the sound of Your waterfalls. All Your waves have rolled over me. 8 The Lord will send His loving-kindness in the day. And His song will be with me in the night, a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I have sorrow because those who hate me come against me with power?” 10 As a breaking of my bones, those who hate me speak sharp words to me. All day long they say to me, “Where is your God?” 11 Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my help and my God.
Prayer to Be Kept Safe
43 Stand by me, O God, and speak in my favor against a sinful nation. Save me from the lying and sinful man. 2 For You are the God of my strength. Why have You turned away from me? Why do I have sorrow because those who hate me come against me with power?
3 Send out Your light and Your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy hill and to the places where You live. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, the God of my joy. And I will praise You with the harp, O God, my God.
5 Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him again, my help and my God.
King Solomon
5 “I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride. I have gathered my perfume with my spice. I have eaten my honey and the comb. I have drunk my wine and my milk. Eat and drink, friends. Drink much, O lovers.”
The Fourth Song
The Woman
2 “I was asleep, but my heart was awake. A voice! My love was knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one! For my head is wet from the water on the grass in the early morning. My hair is wet from the night.’ 3 I have taken off my dress. How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet. Should I get them dirty again? 4 My love put his hand through the opening, and joy filled my heart. 5 I got up to let my love in, and perfume fell from my hands. Wet perfume fell from my fingers onto the lock. 6 I opened the door to my love, but he had already gone! My heart went out to him as he spoke. I looked for him, but did not find him. I called him, but he did not answer me. 7 The watchmen of the city found me. They beat me and hurt me. The watchmen of the walls took my coat from me. 8 I tell you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if you find my loved one, you must tell him that I am weak with love.”
Women of Jerusalem
9 “What is your loved one more than another loved one, O most beautiful among women? What is your loved one more than another loved one, that you tell us to do this?”
The Woman
10 “My loved one is bright and red, the best among 10,000. 11 His head is like gold, pure gold. His hair has waves and is black as a raven. 12 His eyes are like doves beside rivers of water, washed in milk, and resting in their places. 13 His cheeks are like beds of spices, with sweet-smelling plants. His lips are like lily flowers giving off drops of perfume. 14 His hands are strong pieces of gold set with stones of much worth. His body is made of ivory set with stones of much worth. 15 His legs are pillars of clay put on bases of pure gold. He looks like Lebanon, as beautiful as the cedar trees. 16 His mouth is very sweet, everything about him is pleasing. This is my loved one and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.”
The Job of a Religious Leader
5 Every Jewish religious leader is chosen from among men. He is a helper standing between God and men. He gives gifts on the altar in worship to God from the people. He gives blood from animals for the sins of the people. 2 A Jewish religious leader is weak in many ways because he is just a man himself. He knows how to be gentle with those who know little. He knows how to help those who are doing wrong. 3 Because he is weak himself, he must give gifts to God for his own sins as well as for the sins of the people. 4 A Jewish religious leader does not choose this honor for himself. God chooses a man for this work. Aaron was chosen this way.
Christ Is Our Religious Leader Who Has Made the Way for Man to Go to God
5 It is the same way with Christ. He did not choose the honor of being a Religious Leader Who has made the way for man to go to God. Instead, God said to Christ, “You are My Son. Today I have become Your Father.” (A) 6 God says in another part of His Word, “You will be a Religious Leader forever. You will be like Melchizedek.” (B) 7 During the time Jesus lived on earth, He prayed and asked God with loud cries and tears. Jesus’ prayer was to God Who was able to save Him from death. God heard Christ because Christ honored God. 8 Even being God’s Son, He learned to obey by the things He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect, He planned and made it possible for all those who obey Him to be saved from the punishment of sin. 10 In God’s plan He was to be a Religious Leader Who made the way for man to go to God. He was like Melchizedek.
Do Not Fall Back Into Sin
11 There is much we could say about this, but it is hard to make you understand. It is because you do not want to hear well. 12 By now you should be teachers. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the first things you need to know from God’s Word. You still need milk instead of solid food. 13 Anyone who lives on milk cannot understand the teaching about being right with God. He is a baby. 14 Solid food is for full-grown men. They have learned to use their minds to tell the difference between good and bad.
