Locusts Come

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. For I have made his heart and the heart of his servants hard, so that I may do My powerful works among them. ² You may tell your son and your grandson how I made it very hard for the Egyptians and how I did My powerful works among them. So you may know that I am the Lord.” ³ Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They said to him, “The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says this: ‘How long will you hold your pride before Me? Let My people go, so they may worship Me. ⁴ If you will not let My people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country. ⁵ They will cover the land, so no one will be able to see the ground. They will eat what is left for you after the hail. They will eat every tree of yours that grows in the field. ⁶ They will fill your houses, and the houses of your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians. Your fathers and your grandfathers have never seen such a thing from the day they were born until this day.’” Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.

⁷ Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man bring trouble to us? Let the men go, so they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is destroyed?” ⁸ So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh. He said to them, “Go and worship the Lord your God. But who will be going?” ⁹ Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old, our sons and our daughters, and our flocks and cattle. For we must make a special supper to the Lord.” ¹⁰ Then Pharaoh said to them, “Let the Lord be with you if I ever let you go with your little ones! See, you have something bad in mind. ¹¹ No! You men go and worship the Lord. For that is what you want.” And Moses and Aaron were sent away from Pharaoh.

¹² Then the Lord said to Moses, “Put out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts to come upon the land of Egypt. They will eat every plant of the land, all that the hail has left.” ¹³ So Moses put out his special stick over the land of Egypt. And the Lord sent an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. ¹⁴ The locusts came over all the land of Egypt and they stayed on the whole country of Egypt. There were very many. There had never been so many locusts. And there would never be so many again. ¹⁵ For they covered the whole land and made it dark. They ate every plant of the land, and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt.

¹⁶ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in a hurry. He said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. ¹⁷ So now forgive my sin only this once. Pray to the Lord your God to take this death away from me.” ¹⁸ So Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. ¹⁹ And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind. It lifted the locusts and sent them into the Red Sea. Not one locust was left in all the country of Egypt. ²⁰ But the Lord made Pharaoh’s heart hard. He did not let the people of Israel go.

Darkness Covers the Land

²¹ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Put out your hand toward the sky. And there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness people will feel.” ²² So Moses put out his hand toward the sky. And there was darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. ²³ The Egyptians did not see each other. No one got up from his place for three days. But all the people of Israel had light in their homes. ²⁴ Then Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, “Go and worship the Lord. Your children may go with you also. Only let your flocks and your cattle stay.” ²⁵ But Moses said, “You must let us have gifts to give in worship and gifts for burning, so we may give them to the Lord our God. ²⁶ So our animals will go with us also. Not a foot of an animal will be left behind. For we will take some of them to use as we worship the Lord our God. And until we are there, we do not know which ones we will use in worshiping the Lord.” ²⁷ But the Lord made Pharaoh’s heart hard. He was not willing to let them go. ²⁸ Pharaoh said to Moses, “Go away from me! Make sure that you do not see my face again! For the day you see my face again, you will die!” ²⁹ Moses said, “You are right. I will never see your face again.”

Everyone Should Be Sorry for Their Sins and Turn from Them

13 At this time some people came to Jesus. They told Him that Pilate had killed some people from the country of Galilee. It was while they were giving gifts of animals on the altar in worship to God. ² Pilate put their blood together with the blood of the animals. Jesus said to them, “What about these people from Galilee? Were they worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee because they suffered these things? ³ No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die. ⁴ What about those eighteen men who were killed when the high building in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were the worst sinners living in Jerusalem? ⁵ No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die.”

The Picture-Story of the Fig Tree Which Had No Fruit

⁶ Then He told them this picture-story: “A man had a fig tree in his grape-field. He looked for fruit on it but found none. ⁷ He said to his servant, ‘See! For three years I have been coming here looking for fruit on this fig tree. I never find any. Cut it down. Why does it even waste the ground?’ ⁸ The servant said, ‘Sir! Leave it here one more year. I will dig around it and put plant food on it. ⁹ It may be that it will give fruit next year. If it does not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals on the Day of Rest

¹⁰ Jesus was teaching in one of the Jewish places of worship on the Day of Rest. ¹¹ A woman was there who had suffered for eighteen years because of a demon. She was not able to stand up straight. ¹² Jesus saw her and said, “Woman, you are now free from your trouble!” ¹³ Then He put His hand on her. At once she stood up straight and gave thanks to God.

¹⁴ The leader of the Jewish place of worship was angry because Jesus healed on the Day of Rest. The leader said to the people, “There are six days in which work should be done. Come on those days and get healed. Do not come to be healed on the Day of Rest.” ¹⁵ The Lord said to him, “You pretend to be someone you are not! Do not each of you let his cow or his donkey out and lead them to water on the Day of Rest? ¹⁶ Should not this Jewish woman be made free from this trouble on the Day of Rest? She has been chained by Satan for eighteen years.” ¹⁷ When He said this, all those who were against Him were ashamed. All the many people were glad for the great things being done by Him.

The Picture-Stories of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast ^(A)

¹⁸ Then Jesus asked, “What is the holy nation of God like? What can I use to show you? ¹⁹ It is like a mustard seed which a man took and planted in his field. It grew and became a tree. The birds of the sky stayed in its branches.” ²⁰ Again Jesus said, “What can I use to show you what the holy nation of God is like? ²¹ It is like yeast that a woman put into three pails of flour until it was all full of yeast.”

Jesus Teaches on the Way to Jerusalem

²² Jesus taught the people as He went through the cities and towns on His way to Jerusalem. ²³ Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved from the punishment of sin?” Jesus said to them, ²⁴ “Work hard to go in through the narrow door. I tell you, many will try to go in but will not be able to go in. ²⁵ The owner of the house will get up and shut the door. You who are on the outside will knock on the door and say, ‘Lord, let us in.’ Then He will say, ‘I do not know you.’ ²⁶ Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with You when You taught in our streets.’ ²⁷ But He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know you. Go away from Me. You are sinful.’

²⁸ “There will be loud crying and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the early preachers in the holy nation of God, but you will be put out. ²⁹ Those who sit at the table in the holy nation of God will come from the east and west and from the north and south. ³⁰ Listen! Some are last who will be first. Some are first who will be last.”

³¹ That same day some of the proud religious law-keepers came to Jesus. They said, “Go away from here! Herod wants to kill You.” ³² Jesus said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘See. I put out demons and heal the sick. I will do these things today and tomorrow. And the third day My work will be finished.’ ³³ But I must go on My way today and tomorrow and the day after. One who speaks for God cannot die except at Jerusalem.

Jesus Sorrows Over Jerusalem

³⁴ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the early preachers and throw stones on those sent to you. How many times I wanted to gather your children around me, as a bird gathers her young under her wings, but you would not let Me. ³⁵ See! Your house is empty. And I tell you, you will not see Me again until the time comes when you will say, ‘Great and honored is the One Who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Where Can Wisdom Be Found?

28 “For sure there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is made pure. ² Iron is taken out of the earth. And copper is melted from the rock. ³ Man looks into the deepest darkness. And he goes out to the farthest part of the earth to look for rocks in the dark places. ⁴ Men break open deep holes far from where people live, forgotten by travelers. In the holes they hang and move from side to side far from men. ⁵ As for the earth, out of it comes food. But below, it is turned up as fire. ⁶ Sapphires come from its rocks and its dust has gold. ⁷ No bird who eats meat knows that path. The falcon’s eye has not seen it. ⁸ The proud animals have not stepped on it. The strong lion has not passed over it. ⁹ Man puts his hand on the hard rock. He turns the mountains over at its base. ¹⁰ He makes a path through the rocks, and his eyes see everything of much worth. ¹¹ He stops rivers from flowing. And he brings to light what is hidden.

¹² “But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep waters say, ‘It is not in me.’ The sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ ¹⁵ Pure gold cannot be traded for it and it cannot be bought with silver. ¹⁶ It cannot be compared in worth to the gold of Ophir, onyx of much worth, or sapphire. ¹⁷ Gold or glass cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be traded for objects of fine gold. ¹⁸ There is no need to say anything about coral or crystal because wisdom cannot be paid for with rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be compared with the worth of pure gold. ²⁰ Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding? ²¹ It is hidden from the eyes of all living. It is hidden from the birds of the sky. ²² The Place That Destroys and Death say, ‘We have only heard about it with our ears.’

²³ “God understands the way to wisdom, and He knows its place. ²⁴ For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens. ²⁵ He gave weight to the wind. He decided how much water would be in the sea. ²⁶ He decided how much rain would fall, and the path for the lightning. ²⁷ Then He saw wisdom and made it known. He made it last, and found out all about it. ²⁸ And He said to man, ‘See, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. And to turn away from sin is understanding.’”

Speaking in Special Sounds Is Not the Greatest Gift

14 You should want to have this love. You should want the gifts of the Holy Spirit and most of all to be able to speak God’s Word. ² The man who speaks in special sounds speaks to God. He is not speaking to men. No one understands. He is speaking secret things through the power of the Holy Spirit. ³ The man who speaks God’s Word speaks to men. It helps them to learn and understand. It gives them comfort. ⁴ The man who speaks in special sounds receives strength. The man who speaks God’s Word gives strength to the church. ⁵ I wish all of you spoke in special sounds. But more than that, I wish all of you spoke God’s Word. The one who speaks God’s Word has a more important gift than the one who speaks in special sounds. But if he can tell what he is speaking, the church will be helped. ⁶ Christian brothers, if I come to you speaking in special sounds, what good is it to you? But if I tell you something God has shown me or something I have learned or what God’s Word says will happen in the future or teach you God’s Word, it will be for your good.

⁷ There are things on which people play music. If strange sounds are made on these, how will others know which one is played? ⁸ If a horn does not make a good sound, how will men know they are to get ready to fight? ⁹ It is the same if you speak to a person in special sounds. How will he know what you say? Your sounds will be lost in the air. ¹⁰ There are many languages in the world. All of them have meaning to the people who understand them. ¹¹ But if I do not understand the language someone uses to speak to me, the man who speaks is a stranger to me. I am a stranger to him. ¹² Since you want gifts from the Holy Spirit, ask for those that will build up the whole church. ¹³ So the man who speaks in special sounds should pray for the gift to be able to tell what they mean.

¹⁴ If I pray in special sounds, my spirit is doing the praying. My mind does not understand. ¹⁵ What should I do? I will pray with my spirit and I will pray with my mind also. I will sing with my spirit and I will sing with my mind also. ¹⁶ If you honor and give thanks to God with your spirit in sounds nobody understands, how can others honor and give thanks also if they do not know what you are saying? ¹⁷ You are honoring and giving thanks to God, but it is not helping other people.

¹⁸ I thank God that I speak in special sounds more than all of you. ¹⁹ But in a meeting of the church, it is better if I say five words that others can understand and be helped by than 10,000 words in special sounds.

²⁰ Christian brothers, do not be like children in your thinking. Be full-grown, but be like children in not knowing how to sin. ²¹ God says in the Holy Writings, “I will speak to My people. I will speak through men from other lands in other languages. Even then My people will not listen to Me.” ^{(A) 22} So then speaking in special sounds is for those who do not believe. It is not for those who believe. But speaking God’s Word is for those who believe. It is not for those who do not believe.

Church Meetings

²³ If some people who are not Christians come to your church meeting while all the people are speaking in special sounds, they will think you are crazy. ²⁴ But if a man who is not a Christian comes to your church meeting while you are all speaking God’s Word, he will understand that he is a sinner by what he hears. He will know he is guilty. ²⁵ The secrets of his heart will be brought into the open. He will get on his knees and worship God. He will say, “For sure, God is here with you!”

²⁶ What am I saying, Christian brothers? When you meet together for worship, some of you have a song to sing. Some of you want to teach and some have special words from God. Some of you speak in special sounds and some of you tell what they mean. Everything should be done to help those who are meeting together to grow strong as Christians. ²⁷ No more than two or three people should speak in special sounds. Only one should speak at a time. Someone must tell the meaning of the special sounds. ²⁸ If no one is there who can tell the meaning of the special sounds, he should not speak in the church. He should speak only to himself and to God. ²⁹ Two or three should speak God’s Word. The other people should listen and decide if they are speaking right. ³⁰ If someone sitting in the meeting gets some special word from God, the one who is speaking should stop. ³¹ All of you can speak God’s Word, but only one person at a time. In that way, all of you can learn and be helped. ³² Men who speak God’s Word are able to stop when they should. ³³ God does not want everyone speaking at the same time in church meetings. He wants peace. All the churches of God’s people worship this way.

³⁴ Women should not be allowed to speak in church meetings. They are to obey this teaching. The Law says this also. ³⁵ If they want to find out about something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is a shame for a woman to speak in a church meeting.

³⁶ Did the Word of God come from you Christians in the city of Corinth? Or are you the only people who received it? ³⁷ Some of you may think you have the gift of speaking God’s Word or some other gift from the Holy Spirit. If you do, you should know that what I am writing to you is what God has told us we must obey. ³⁸ If any man does not listen to this, have nothing to do with him.

³⁹ So then, my Christian brothers, you should want to speak God’s Word. Do not stop anyone from speaking in special sounds. ⁴⁰ All things should be done in the right way, one after the other.
