M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Aaron Speaks for Moses
7 The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh. Your brother Aaron will be the one who speaks for you. 2 You will speak all that I tell you. Your brother Aaron will tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his land. 3 But I will make Pharaoh’s heart hard. So I will do many powerful works for the people to see in the land of Egypt. 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay My hand on Egypt. By great acts that will punish the Egyptians, I will bring out My family groups, My people, the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt. 5 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I put My hand upon Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” 6 So Moses and Aaron did what the Lord told them to do. 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Aaron’s Special Walking Stick
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by doing a powerful work,’ then you say to Aaron, ‘Take your special stick and throw it down in front of Pharaoh so that it will become a snake.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They did just as the Lord had told them. Aaron threw his stick down in front of Pharaoh and his servants and it became a snake. 11 Then Pharaoh called for his wise men and wonder-workers. They did the same thing using their secret ways. 12 For each one threw down his stick and it became a snake. But Aaron’s special stick ate their sticks. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hard. He did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.
Water Becomes Blood
14 The Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is not changed. He will not let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning when he is going out to the water. Wait for him beside the Nile River. Take in your hand the special stick that became a snake. 16 And say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, so they may worship Me in the desert. But see, you have not yet listened.” 17 So the Lord says, “By this you will know that I am the Lord. I will hit the water of the Nile with the special stick that is in my hand. And the water will be changed to blood. 18 The fish that are in the Nile will die. And the Nile will have a bad smell. The Egyptians will not be able to drink water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your special stick and put your hand out over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their pools, and all their man-made lakes of water, so they will become blood. There will be blood through all the land of Egypt, even in pots of wood and pots of stone.’”
20 Moses and Aaron did what the Lord had told them. Aaron raised the special stick and hit the water of the Nile in front of Pharaoh and his servants. And all the water in the Nile was turned into blood. 21 The
fish that were in the Nile died. And the Nile had a bad smell. So the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. The blood was through all the land of Egypt. 22 But the wonder-workers of Egypt did the same thing using their secret ways. And Pharaoh’s heart was hard. He did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said. 23 Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house, without even thinking what had happened. 24 And all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink. For they could not drink the water of the Nile. 25 Seven days passed after the Lord had hit the Nile.
Seventy Are Sent Out
10 After this the Lord chose seventy others. He sent them out two together to every city and place where He would be going later. 2 Jesus said to them, “There is much grain ready to gather. But the workmen are few. Pray then to the Lord Who is the Owner of the grain-fields that He will send workmen to gather His grain. 3 Go on your way. Listen! I send you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Take no money. Do not take a bag or shoes. Speak to no one along the way. 5 When you go into a house, say that you hope peace will come to them. 6 If a man who loves peace lives there, your good wishes will come to him. If your good wishes are not received, they will come back to you. 7 Stay in the same house. Eat and drink what they give you. The workman should have his thanks. Do not move from house to house.
8 “Whenever a city receives you, eat the things that are put before you there. 9 Heal the sick. Say to them, ‘The holy nation of God is near.’ 10 Whatever city does not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your city that is on our feet we are cleaning off against you. But understand this, the holy nation of God has come near you!’ 12 I tell you, on the day men stand before God, it will be easier for the city of Sodom than for that city.
13 “It is bad for you, city of Chorazin! It is bad for you, town of Bethsaida! For if the powerful works which were done in you had been done in the cities of Tyre and Sidon they would have turned from their sins long ago. They would have shown their sorrow by putting on clothes made from hair and would have sat in ashes. 14 It will be better for Tyre and Sidon on the day men stand before God and be told they are guilty than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, are you to be lifted up into heaven? You will be taken down to hell. 16 Whoever listens to you, listens to Me. Whoever has nothing to do with you, has nothing to do with Me. Whoever has nothing to do with Me, has nothing to do with the One Who sent Me.”
The Seventy Came Back
17 The seventy came back full of joy. They said, “Lord, even the demons obeyed us when we used Your name.” 18 Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Listen! I have given you power to walk on snakes. I have given you power over small animals with a sting of poison. I have given you power over all the power of the one who works against you. Nothing will hurt you. 20 Even so, you should not be happy because the demons obey you but be happy because your names are written in heaven.”
The Joy of the Holy Spirit
21 At this time Jesus was full of the joy of the Holy Spirit. He said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You have kept these things hidden from the wise and from those who have much learning. You have shown them to little children. Yes, Father, it was what you wanted done.
22 “Everything has been given to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son but the Father. No one knows the Father but the Son and the Son makes the Father known to those He chooses.”
23 Then He turned to His followers and said without anyone else hearing, “Happy are those who see what you see! 24 I tell you, many early preachers and kings have wanted to see the things you are seeing, but they did not see them. They have wanted to hear the things you are hearing, but they did not hear them.”
Jesus Talks to the Man Who Knew the Law
25 A man stood up who knew the Law and tried to trap Jesus. He said, “Teacher, what must I do to have life that lasts forever?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? What does the Law say?” 27 The man said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. You must love Him with all your soul. You must love Him with all your strength. You must love Him with all your mind. You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.” 28 Jesus said to him, “You have said the right thing. Do this and you will have life.” 29 The man tried to make himself look good. He asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”
The Picture-Story of the Good Samaritan
30 Jesus said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to the city of Jericho. Robbers came out after him. They took his clothes off and beat him. Then they went away, leaving him almost dead. 31 A religious leader was walking down that road and saw the man. But he went by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a man from the family group of Levi was walking down that road. When he saw the man who was hurt, he came near to him but kept on going on the other side of the road. 33 Then a man from the country of Samaria came by. He went up to the man. As he saw him, he had loving-pity on him. 34 He got down and put oil and wine on the places where he was hurt and put cloth around them. Then the man from Samaria put this man on his own donkey. He took him to a place where people stay for the night and cared for him. 35 The next day the man from Samaria was ready to leave. He gave the owner of that place two pieces of money to care for him. He said to him, ‘Take care of this man. If you use more than this, I will give it to you when I come again.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who was beaten by the robbers?” 37 The man who knew the Law said, “The one who showed loving-pity on him.” Then Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”
Mary and Martha Care for Jesus
38 As they went on their way, they came to a town where a woman named Martha lived. She cared for Jesus in her home. 39 Martha had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to all He said. 40 Martha was working hard getting the supper ready. She came to Jesus and said, “Do You see that my sister is not helping me? Tell her to help me.” 41 Jesus said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 Only a few things are important, even just one. Mary has chosen the good thing. It will not be taken away from her.”
Job Keeps On Talking
24 “Why are times for judging not set up by the All-powerful? And why do those who know Him not see these days? 2 Some take away the land-marks and take fields and animals. 3 They drive away the donkeys that belong to those who have no parents. They take the bull that belongs to a woman whose husband has died, as a promise that she will pay what she owes. 4 They push poor people off the road. All the poor of the land are made to hide themselves. 5 See, they go out like wild donkeys in the desert to look for food for their children. 6 They gather food in the fields, and gather what they can that is left from the grape-fields owned by the sinful. 7 They lie all night without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. 8 They are wet with the mountain rains and stay close to the rocks for cover. 9 Others take from the breast the child who has no father. They take the child from the poor as a promise that they will pay what they owe. 10 They make the poor go about without clothing, making them carry loads of cut grain while they are hungry. 11 Among the olive trees they make oil. They crush grapes but they are thirsty. 12 Men from the city cry inside themselves. The souls of those who are hurt cry out. Yet God does not listen to their prayer.
13 “Then there are those who turn against the light. They do not want to know its ways or stay in its paths. 14 The one who kills people gets up early in the morning. He kills the poor and those in need. And during the night he is like a robber. 15 The eye of the one who is not faithful in marriage waits for the evening, saying, ‘No one will see me.’ And he covers his face. 16 In the dark they dig into houses. They shut themselves up during the day and do not know the light. 17 For midnight is morning to them. They are not afraid of the fears of darkness.
18 “They are taken away on the top of the waters. Their part of the earth is cursed. They do not go to their grape-fields. 19 Dry weather and heat take away the water from the snow, just as the place of the dead takes away those who have sinned. 20 A mother will forget him. The worm is pleased to eat him until he is remembered no more. Sin will be broken like a tree. 21 He does wrong to the woman who cannot give birth. And he does no good for the woman whose husband has died. 22 But God by His power gives long life to the strong. They rise again, even when they had no hope of life. 23 He makes them safe and gives them strength, and His eyes are on their ways. 24 They are given honor for a little while, and then they are gone. They are brought low and gathered up as all others are. They are cut off like the heads of grain. 25 If it is not so, who can prove me a liar, and show that what I say means nothing?”
11 Follow my way of thinking as I follow Christ.
How Christian Women Should Live
2 I think you have done well because you always remember me and have followed the things I taught you. 3 I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man. The husband is the head of his wife. God is the head of Christ. 4 If any man prays or preaches with his head covered, he does not give honor to Christ. 5 Every woman who prays or preaches without her head covered does not respect her head. It is the same as if she had her hair cut off. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she might as well cut off her hair also. If a woman is ashamed to have her hair cut off, she should cover her head. 7 Man is made like God and His shining-greatness. For this reason a man should not have his head covered when he prays or preaches, but the woman respects the man. 8 Man was not made from woman. Woman was made from man, 9 and man was not made for woman. Woman was made for man. 10 For this reason a woman should have a covering on her head. This shows she respects man. This is for the angels to see also. 11 In God’s plan women need men and men need women. 12 Woman was made from man, but man is born of woman. God made all things.
13 Think this over yourselves. Does it look right for a woman to pray with no covering on her head? 14 Have we not already learned that it is a shame for a man to have long hair? 15 But a woman can be proud to have long hair. Her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 If anyone wants to argue about this, my answer is that this is what we teach, and all the churches agree with me.
How the Lord’s Supper Should Be Eaten
17 While writing about these things, let me tell you what I think. Nothing good is coming from your meeting together. 18 First of all, I hear that when you meet together in the church you are divided into groups and you argue. I almost believe this is true. 19 For there must be different groups among you. In that way, those who are right will be seen from those who are wrong. 20 When you gather together for your meetings, it is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 Each one is in a hurry to eat his own food first. He does not wait for others. In this way, one does not get enough food and drink. Others get too much and get drunk. 22 You have your own homes to eat and drink in. Or do you hate the church of God and shame those who are poor? What am I to say to you? Am I to say you are right? No! I cannot say you are right in this.
The Meaning of the Lord’s Supper
23 I have given you the teaching I received from the Lord. The night Jesus was handed over to the soldiers, He took bread. 24 When He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take this bread and eat it. This is My body which is broken for you. Do this to remember Me.”
25 In the same way after supper, He took the cup. He said, “This cup is the New Way of Worship made between God and you by My blood. Whenever you drink it, do it to remember Me.”
26 Every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup you are telling of the Lord’s death until He comes again. 27 Anyone who eats the bread or drinks from the cup, if his spirit is not right with the Lord, will be guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 This is why a man should look into his own heart and life before eating the bread and drinking from the cup. 29 Anyone who eats the bread and drinks from the cup, if his spirit is not right with the Lord, will be guilty as he eats and drinks. He does not understand the meaning of the Lord’s body. 30 This is why some of you are sick and weak, and some have died. 31 But if we would look into our own lives and see if we are guilty, then God would not have to say we are guilty. 32 When we are guilty, we are punished by the Lord so we will not be told we are guilty with the rest of the world.
33 Christian brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home. Then he will not be guilty as you meet together. I will talk about the other things when I come.
